How to Clean a Construction Site

The construction process involves a large amount of materials and employees who are often working on a tight schedule. It’s no surprise then, that at the end of most projects the site is quite messy, full of debris, extra materials and dirt. Before the building can be considered complete, the site must be cleared of all construction materials and the building must be cleaned from top to bottom. This work is typically performed by a construction cleaning crew. Large companies may have one of these teams on staff, or they may subcontract the work out to specialty cleaning companies.

Step 1

Investigate the recycling requirements in your region. In most states, construction companies are required to recycle certain materials, including drywall, wood, metal, and even concrete. Check with your state’s recycling department to see what is required and where it should be taken.
Step 2

Check with the project team to determine if the project is working towards any LEED certifications or other green building awards. Under the LEED program, a project may be required to recycle up to 95% of construction debris. In order for the project to gain these certifications, your cleanup team must comply with LEED standards.
Step 3

Set up separate areas on the site where your employees or laborers can collect materials for disposal. For smaller jobs, use individual dumpsters. On larger projects, use plastic fencing to block off an area.
Step 4

Mark your collection areas. Create separate areas for drywall, metals, wood and any other material that is being recycled. As your employees collect these materials, they can place them in the appropriate areas.
Step 5

Rent several dumpsters to accommodate materials that can’t be recycled, including one for general debris.The average dumpster company won’t accept concrete or masonry because of the weight.
Step 6

Remove all the larger items from the site and place them in the appropriate area or dumpster. Have disposal and recycling companies pick up the materials. You will have to pay for both of these services, but you may recoup some of these costs when you recycle metals, especially copper or aluminum.
Step 7

Perform your final cleaning. This includes sweeping and mopping floors, washing mirrors and windows, and cleaning countertops and equipment. Again, keep any project LEED requirements in mind, as they could affect what kind of cleaning materials can be used. Remove window stickers by gently scraping them off, being careful to protect the glass. Finally, remove protective devices, such as cardboard and plastic covers from glass, equipment, and floors.

This is a great idea for the environment as well as our future generations, to keep the earth safe and make some of our own energy while we are at it. This author published an ehow for individuals in dire need of dumpster rentals, but finding themselves unable to afford the high costs of week long rentals and dump and returns. The author made a fabulous point by saying that if you are in a close enough neighborhood and a few of the residents are in need or want to rent a dumpster as well then share. This really seems like an idea that will work well with a lot of people. Think about it, if ten people decided to rent a $500 dumpster and use it for the allotted 10 days then have it removed from the neighborhood forever that is a one time cost for each individual of $50 and no sweat or time wasted hauling the items yourself.

Easy – this is a very common problem.

Your hauler (for a small fee, typically $5-$10/month) will supply you with a lock for the Side doors of the container. The Hauler will also install a gravity lock so that it automatically unlocks when the Dumpster is turned upside down. you should try to first write in to any websites of television stations airing shows like that. then pass out flyers and get your name out there and known to people. start with helping people close to you for free or reduced cost and just ask that they in return tell more people about your skills. also if you plan on becoming a professional organizer for someone who has a house full of stuff that you don’t know what to do with start by renting a dumpster and asking that person to help you get rid of all the clutter and excess belongings that they own, talk to a professional about it at www.dumpstersource.com

AIA billings index picked up 6 points in July

Not a big surprise that architecture and construction business activities have been steadily declining due to the bad economy. This decline in activities also translates to a decline in dumpster rentals by those construction worker and architects that the dumpster rental companies relied on so heavily.

The Architecture Billings Index (ABI), a leading economic indicator of construction activity, was up almost six points in July, after an earlier five point dip in June.

ABI reflects the approximate nine-to-twelve month lag time between architecture billings and construction spending. The American Institute of Architects (AIA) reported the July ABI rating was 43.1, up from 37.7 the previous month. This score, however, still indicates a decline in demand for design services. Scores above 50 indicate an increase in billings.

“It is always encouraging to see an uptick in our index, but there has been too much contraction in recent months to get overly optimistic about business conditions returning to levels they were at two months ago,” said Kermit Baker, AIA chief economist.

In addition to a very competitive marketplace, architects continue to report that lenders have still not yet fully opened credit lines and that the stimulus funding has so far provided limited project activity for the design community overall, Baker said.

Declining billing activity for design services means contractors will likely see less demand for construction services, including retrofits and removal of construction waste in commercial dumpsters.

Debris removal just part of college’s roofing project

All it took to get the ball rolling on an old middle school remodeling project that had constantly been put on the back burner was a single dumpster with a chute.

A stalled remodeling project on an old middle school in Minnesota is getting back on track after the college which owns the building decided bring in a dumpster and replace the roof which was in desperate need of repair.

The Northfield Middle School, which is now owned by Carleton College, was scheduled to be remodeled to house classrooms and other facilities, but the Northfield News reports that the poor economy halted the project.

But school officials declared that the roof needed to be replaced immediately to avoid damage to the building, especially portions built in the 1910.

The paper says that a number of provisions are being made to make sure dust and construction debris from the roof makes its way into the dumpster container and stays there.

According to the news provider, a commercial dumpster will be placed on the property with a chute which will take construction waste from the room. During the evening a tarp will also be placed on the dumpster to avoid construction debris from being blown around.

Carlton College says that after remodeling, the former Northfield Middle School will house a number of multiple-use classrooms along with a teaching museum and a number of art-related facilities including dance studios and multiple theaters.

The opening of the Project Green Institute in Ann Arbor, Michigan has just recently been announced. The J.S. Vig Construction website host a plethora of new green ideas and buildings from the company as well as interactive videos that explain the entire process step-by-step.

Southeast Michigan-based J.S. Vig Construction, a full-service general contractor and construction management company, announced the opening of the Project Green Institute in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

As green construction takes off as a major driver in the construction industry, the institute is offering interested parties access to education and services tied to best practices around energy efficiency, water efficiency and sustainable construction practices.

The institute will house multiple LEED accredited professionals offering evaluation and auditing of existing buildings and future projects, building retrofits and resources related to best practices including classroom training on the environmental and economic benefits.

Joseph Vig, CEO of J.S. Vig, said the company had already developed a program to guide building owners and operators through the green construction process.

“The Project Green Institute will complement this program by providing an environment where professionals can see and touch the many different elements of green construction and receive expert consultation before making a serious financial decision,” he said.

Contractors involved in green building projects and retrofits may find themselves having to make planning around the extra steps involved in disposing of construction waste to abide by green practices.

For example, contractors may need additional roll-off dumpsters in order to separate wa ste by recyclable and non-recyclable materials.

Commercial dumpster ordinance weighed in Colorado

A small town in Colorado is making it more difficult for residents to take on any serious home remodeling projects as there is a new restriction being placed on residential dumpsters and waste containers. The city council is looking to make it illegal for residence to place dumpsters on their properties without fiirst concealing it with a large enough fence.

Residents in one Colorado town may find it harder to keep a commercial dumpster on the site of a home renovation or construction project when city council members take up the issue next month.

The town of Cañon City, Colorado is looking to ban the use of large trash container and commercial dumpsters from residential areas unless they are concealed by a fence, according to the Cañon City Daily Record.

If the proposal is passed by the city council next month there will be a number of exemptions which will allow apartment buildings, mobile home parks and some other residential locations to have a commercial dumpster on site. Additionally, businesses located in non-residential zones will be exempt from the ban, according to the paper.

There is a chance that language can be placed into the proposal which would allow residents who need a construction waste container to obtain a $35 permit which would authorize the use of a refuse dumpster for up to 30 days for use during a move or remodel.

Last month the city of Longview, Texas proposed an ordinance that would require dumpsters to have screens on up to all four sides in order to hide them from view, according to the Longview News-Journal.
