It’s the time of year in Lenexa when residents who love BBQ get their bibs ready and their mouths in position to taste the best that the Great Lenexa BBQ Battle can bring on June 21-22!

Of all of the Lenexa events this season, this is the premier one of bunch when it comes to audience participation. This is the time when residents of Dunes at City Center Apartments show up in force with family and friends to try the cuisine pit masters are going to be serving during the two-day event!

Since its relatively humble beginnings in 1982, this annual festival now brings in over 185 of the top BBQ chefs in the nation. With 240 judges happily deciding the fate of those who will be competing for top honors, the excitement is the best part of this annual competition.

The battle for top cookers will be held on 87th & Lackman Road at the Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park, and everyone is invited, included children, who will have lots of activities to keep them distracted. Besides the excellent BBQ there will be live music to entertain the crowd.

Raise Money for KC Service People in this Motorcycle Benefit Ride

Support the first responders that keep us safe at the Guns n Hoses Motorcycle Benefit Ride.

We are all a very giving people around our community here in Kansas. So it’s no surprise then that there are lots of great fundraisers in Lenexa happening all of the time. One of the best fundraisers in June raising money for KC service people is the Guns n Hoses Motorcycle Benefit Ride!

Taking place each year on the first Saturday in June, Guns n ‘Hoses Benefit Ride is an escorted motorcycle ride which brings out tons of great people.The goal is to help raise money for the strained coffers of Kansas City metro Firefighters and Police Officers and their families. The immediate need is for those in dire straits who need help right away.

Whether it is unforseen medical emergencies, health care or something along those lines, the Guns n Hoses Benefit Ride is here to help. There is food, music, vendors, a live auction, and plenty of other prizes given away here so come check it out!

Happening on Saturday, June 1 at 10:30am, Guns n Hoses Benefit Ride is taking off from the Lenexa Christian Center on 87th St Pkwy. Come out on your hog or just on foot to help out!

CrossFit Defined: CrossFit is an exercise regimen that blends strength training with cardio fitness. So you’re ready to move but not quite sure how to go about packing some of those awkward and hard to negotiate items. If you’re ready to move and have no clue how to approach moving bulky furniture and household goods, check out this list of helpful moving tips on how to make packing and moving a piece of cake.

When packing electronic equipment, check the owners manual for any suggested tips from the manufacturer.
Table lamps can be tricky. Remove the shade and and wrap in tissue paper. Box separately so the shade isn’t ripped, punctured or crushed.
Wrap big screen TVs entirely in blankets or furniture pads for protection. Use packing tape to secure the padding, and for the move itself, use lifting straps to transport the TV.
Anything as large as a piano needs the services of professional movers. Don’t take the chance of moving it yourself.
Pack computer hard drives, monitors and CPUs separately in heavy-duty boxes lined with styrofoam inserts, peanuts or bubble wrap. Remove all cords and tag each with a color coded label, so you know where it belongs.

What time of the day are you hosting your party? This will really dictate how you announce your event, what you will serve here, and how it will be done. If you’re having 3 or 4 friends over in the middle of the day, that’s different than having 15 people around dinner time. The first requires chips and snacks while the second may need you to have the event catered with a sit down flair.

Will there be alcohol at your event? If it is all adults and you are sure everyone has a way to get home, that’s one thing. But if there will be all ages, families and such, it could help to de-emphasize the alcohol.

Do you want your guests to bring anything besides themselves? It needs to be thought through before you put out an open invite to your pals.

You should also seriously consider visiting the Wayside Waifs animal shelter in nearby Kansas City. The animal shelter is not only the largest no-kill shelter in the city, but it has been protecting animals since 1944. They are also known for placing over 5,400 animals a year in loving homes.

Whether it’s just for you and your mom, or you want to bring a whole group of friends and family out, you can all tour the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art this Mother’s Day.

The tours may not really be what you are interested in. However, if it is going to be you and a larger group, then signing up for a tour block can help keep you all together and keep you all seeing the same things.

The tours of the Nerman Museum are free and are offered by amazing volunteers who dedicate their time to enriching the lives of others. On the tour, you will be taken around to about 10 different pieces, with the whole of the tour lasting about an hour.

3 Core Workouts to Do with an Exercise Ball

Forge that beach-ready body with these basic exercise ball movements.

To get your body toned and ready for the beach, pool or any other time you take off your shirt, there is probably nothing more effective than core exercises with an exercise ball. You can engage in these exercises in the privacy of your Dunes at City Center apartment, and actually set your routines at any time of day or night you like.

Although an exercise ball may appear to be quite limited as a fitness tool, its uses are actually wide ranging and truly varied. For instance, if you want to work on your core muscles and abs, then use the ball for your abdominal, upper body and lower body exercises.

If you want to work your triceps, shoulders and pecs, then use the ball to do push-ups Put your hands squarely on the ball and place your body at 45-degrees, as you balance on the tips of your toes. Lower your body and then push up from the exercise ball. This movement will work on all of your key upper body muscles (shoulders, triceps, chest), along with strengthen those pesky ab muscles.

Another core exercise is to do basic crunches. You simply use your abs to lift the shoulders and upper back off the exercise ball.
