11.11.11 // Khoda by Reza Dolatabadi — This kind of project is one of a kind… 6000 paintings combined to make a stop motion video production. The project took over 2 years to finish, and the final result is spectacular. I am blown away by artists who have the patience and perseverance to produce creations of this kind. Well done.

10.28.11 // The Messenger by Robert Perez Toledo — Getting back to our roots, that being a short that is under 2 minutes. This gem was recommended by one of the readers of this blog a couple weeks ago as, “One Incredible Minute.” And to that I will have to agree, it’s a fantastic look at the awkwardness of relationships when a guy realizes he is on the friend ladder instead of the potential ladder [ie: The Ladder Theory].

In shaping a board dedicated to her memory, he carves out the pain in his heart; then in giving the board to his pro-surfing friends to ride, he allows others help him carry the weight of the loss. A story of loss, grief, and the healing power of community.

10.8.11 // The Makeover by Elsa Brehin — As I’m preparing to be a dad… I’ve found myself hovering towards animated shorts to inspire my future child with… I came across this short and found instant affinity to the husband character, who comes home to find his normalcy gone and in it’s place a fantasy beyond his comprehension… which irritates him at first, until the reality of it all finally wins him over.

FUBAR — Short Film Friday

9.30.11 // FUBAR by Hasraf HaZ Dulull — Ok, it’s not often that you’re transported into a war zone between Cats and Dogs. Utilizing some fantastic stop motion and animation this film is as gripping as Black Hawk Down ever was… well, if you can get past the fact that dogs and cats are actually fighting with modern day technology and artillery.

Les Chiens Isoles — Short Film Friday

9.9.11 // Les chiens isolés by CRCR — Another animated short film that is not for kids, but shows a glimpse into the lives of an oil rig worker as he dips into madness from the stress and isolation of his job. Fantastic character development and plot makes this short a must watch.

9.2.11 // Deconstructing the Story by the sm evo experience — Fun short film that deconstructs a sequence of a guy meeting a girl in a record store. I love this guy character in the film, he portray’s the inner monologue really well, and the filmmakers allow us to see how each of these scenarios play out… all ending in complete failure.

Dark Side of the Lens — Short Film Friday

8.5.11 // Dark Side of the Lens by Astray Films — I absolutely love everything about this film and would continue to watch it for another 45 minutes to 90 minutes if it were longer. Why? Well, because…

I love the ocean,
waves are mesmorizing,
underwater waves are even more mesmorizing,
the ocean scares me,
and these guys play out there everyday…

Plus, I really enjoyed the voiceover/poetry/story being told over the beautiful imagery. These guys love their life and are uninterested in doing something else… Part of me wishes I could find that joy in my day to day. And then the grown-up part of me tells the idealistic part of me to, “Shut-up and pay the bills.”

3 Minutes — Short Film Friday

7.29.11 // 3 Minutes by Ross Ching — In this short, Ross puts together a fun and creative take on the chase scene… Plus every boy who has ever dreamt of filmmaking will be ecstatic with what happens in the middle of this fight scene, as Ross recreates an epic battle scene with great skill. Even in the little things, look for the reflection of the actors on the marble slabs. On a side note, it seems this short gets some of it’s inspiration from one of the great Chinese films, “Battle Royale” which has been banned in the US because of it’s violent scenes involving school children. How have I seen it? Well, my brother, @geekcouch knows how to get around those silly censoring laws, and was able to get the goods from other less Quaker countries, via Fed Ex.

Soapbox: It baffles me that porn is so easily accessible in this country, but yet the government has the power to ban films from entrance because they are “too violent.” #duplicity

Ok, sorry for the rant. Enjoy this short and keep an eye out for Ross Ching, he’s going to be directing some big things soon… I can feel it.
