Most blogs are going to fail. The blog you are writing right now is probably going to fail. Lord knows, most of the blogs that I have started have failed.

You’ve probably seen it. Watch me make money online; watch me travel the world; listen to my thoughts about how to be a better human being; look at my photos from my travels; watch me interview smart people…

It’s not because blogging is a bad way to start a business. If I were to start from scratch today, I’d start with a blog. I’d try to get my foothold in business by being a connector and publisher in a niche with a lot of demonstrated commercial potential.

The vast majority of information on the web has no relevant and trustworthy point of view for the reader. This is especially true in commercial niches. Users have to make their own conclusions. What does this information mean to me? How can I make a buying decision here? Readers are seeking taste-makers with bold points of view. Successful bloggers who take this approach to blogging will be part journalist, practitioner, researcher, author, and entrepreneur.

Winning approaches to online publishing:

Are focused on connecting people, products, and information in order to help solve a problem people care about.

Prioritize solving the problems of the marketplace over advancing his or her immediate personal interests.

Bloggers have some huge advantages over established businesses and larger publishing outlets. They aren’t tied to any particular point of view, product, or service. When they identify a better way to serve your audience’s problems, they can pivot immediately.

To contrast, here are some other popular blogging models (that can be successful as well):

The affiliate blogger. “I’ll build up a lot of traffic and around an authority site and promote products the convert well.”

The cult of personality blogger. “I’ll share my model with people so they can solve things the same way.”

Cultivating a dedicated and trusting audience is either exorbitantly expensive or impossible for companies to create for themselves. They aren’t good at reporting with integrity, pointing out items of interest with no commercial value, being quirky and interesting, and coming up with impassioned points of view on topics that mater.

“But I dont know anything about commercial problems.” I didn’t know anything about the Philippines when I started my outsourcing blog. I stepped off the plane in September 2009 and started an authority site on the topic in December 2009. I made like a journalist and asked people for the best information. When I didn’t have it, I focused on sharing my unique point of view and experiences. Joe and Justin put up their first Adsense site on the internet in early 2011. In February 2012, they are considered one of the web’s leading experts on the topic.

If I would have told you on year ago there was an opportunity to build a famous authority website on Adsense, would you have believed me?

Being an expert is about publishing the best content. That doesn’t come from 10 years of experience. That comes from getting on the phone, reaching out, driving at the hard problems in your industry, and caring relentlessly about the solving problems in your marketplace. I’d be willing to be that the majority of the people who write the content for INC magazine aren’t entrepreneurs. Do you trust them as experts? Could you do better?

It was early 2008. I had agreed to sell my company - my sole obsession of the last 10 years. The paperwork was processing.

I hated having 85 employees. It had become a little hell. I needed to get away and clear my mind
I went as far away as I could - to a hot-springs Shinto shrine on a volcano at the southern tip of Japan.

I sat silently. I steamed. I soaked. I slept to the sounds of the sea.
I could not have been more relaxed. My head was empty.

For the first time in ten years, I had nothing I needed to do. No responsibilities. No plans.
What a relief, right? Can you imagine?

I brought along the great book Seeking Wisdom, and read in my peaceful Japanese ocean-facing room.

The book was great. Charlie Munger's thoughts on behavioral finance were brilliant and contrarian. This book was inspiring all kinds of entrepreneurial ideas that I wanted to try!
When I was at CD Baby, I'd be able to play with new ideas immediately. (“What if we had a $5 sale?” “What if I could co-op card swipers?” “What if I could go multi-lingual?”) Any time I had an idea, I'd be able to test it out within days.

But now, for the first time in 10 years, since I had no company, I couldn't test out these new ideas! All I could do was read, think, and maybe write about it. Damn!

Then I realized why I need to start a new company. Not for the money. Not because I'm “bored”. But because a company is a laboratory to try your ideas. (The word “laboratory” is defined as a room for research, experimentation or analysis. I think of it as a sandbox or playpen.)

Realizing this in my peaceful hot-springs, I caught a train back to Fukuoka, and jumped into action.

I started MuckWork so I could play with crowdsourcing while helping people get their boring work done.

I re-launched MusicThoughts to experiment with a fully multi-lingual site, and lang.pro to organize this translation work.

I set up Now Now Now as the incubator/holding company and an experiment in transparency.

And all of my education-based projects (Success Stories, Documentary, and Coaching), which I'm wrapping into one bigger scope soon.

And this made me happier than doing nothing. This isn't work, it's play. It's my place to try my ideas.

We all need some time off. A change of scene and pace. Silence and solace if we're stressed. Reckless adrenaline if we're in a rut.

But for those of us who think that an eternal escape from work would be paradise, don't forget that we all need a playground, and your own company is one of the best playgrounds of all.

Why Bill Gates Is My Hero Again - Ben Yu

There are a lot of choices for tech/entrepreneurial hero these days, and broadly it seems the trending fashion is to throw out a name like Steve Jobs or Mark Zuckerberg. “Stay hungry, stay foolish” seems like the battle cry of our generation.

But I remember when things were different. I remember my childhood days where no one had ever heard of Steve Jobs and Zuckerberg hadn’t even started Facebook. There was only one real tech idol back then that was a household name. A person everyone knew – Bill Gates.

The richest man in the world. Everyone talked about Bill Gates. Everyone was going to be like Bill Gates. He was the hero and the villain of tech. He vindicated software, took down IBM, and stole Jobs’ GUI. He was the winner, and the only one.

But Bill Gates is a tired phrase in this new decade. Everyone still knows him, but no one really mentions about him. What happened to him? Why does he no longer seem relevant?

I have a simple answer to that. Bill Gates and his bosom buddy Warren Buffett are the reasonable billionaires. They eschew extremities, they’re self-deprecating and don’t hold pretenses, and they tackle the world’s problems in a moderate way that no one can really hold an issue against.

On the other hand, iconoclasts like Steve Jobs reek of contrarianism. Jobs was a real dropout. He slept on his friends’ floors and ate free meals at the local temple. He distorted reality. He was unreasonable. He was demanding. He had enemies. You did things his way. And yet, he propelled Apple to become to largest company in the world.

Same for Zuckerberg and others. They took paths that were shockingly in conflict with the norm, and succeeded. It’s slightly titillating to associate yourself with them. A bit rebellious. A bit unorthodox. It’s exciting.

Not so with Bill. He’s just the genial guy who made his billions, stepped out, and decided to dedicate his life to saving small African children from polio.

I’d been swept away with the general Zeitgeist of our time as well and forgotten about Bill Gates. But I chanced across this article Saturday, and it suddenly brought me all back again.

Yeah, Bill Gates isn’t very iconoclastic. And that’s exactly why he’s possibly one of the most right among us. Some of us are shooting for the stars, and that’s perfectly alright. Most of us will fall short, and some will succeed. We’ll idolize those few that succeed and attempt to emulate their path.

But with his life, Gates is something of a paragon role model in quite a few ways. He had his early days of vicious pioneering and money making. He made it to the top.

And then he bowed out. And that’s the principle point of admiration. He didn’t get swept away, Microsoft didn’t become his life’s sole ambition. He wanted to contribute something more meaningful to the world in the form of solving our most striking humanitarian concerns.

Most of all, he’s an incredibly reasonable person. He acknowledges his own fortune, and then uses it for good. He’s never turned his back on the things that have helped him get to where he is. He loves Harvard, he’s continued learning his entire life, and has been a huge proponent behind sparks in the system like the Khan Academy and MIT OpenCourseWare.

Really, he just does things right. There are few other people I’d rather have have his money, and I think he’s doing the right things with it. He’s not crazy. He’s not reckless. He seems like a good person at heart. He’s immensely capable. And his solutions make sense. What more could one want from a hero?

Keep up the good work, Bill Gates.
