Sony Ericsson to launch Bond handsets for 007 fans

Interesting news for 007 fans! Sony Ericsson will launch handsets with James Bond themes in its C920 range. It will have features of the next James Bond film, Quantum of Solace, starring Daniel Craig. It is priced for Rs 20,995 for Indian users.

Use GPRS enabled mobile phones to create websites

AKMIN TECHNOLOGIES is all set to offer millions of Indian mobile users a gift in the form of a mobile based application on our Independence Day. In India, there is a huge scope for mobile based applications as the number of mobile users is increasing day by day. Akmin would offer the services, free of cost from August 15. Users will be able to create websites even if they do not have any technical knowhow.Tasks would be
made easier with the help of its easy-to-use interface made especially for the mobile screen.

Creating a website can’t get easier and simpler than this, all because of Akmin Technologies. A year and a half ago, the company had launched a mobile website developer and it was used most by Indians and the Americans. Telecos gear up for Independence Day rollouts

Capitalising on the independence day fervour, telecom companies are gearing up to commence operations and roll out new services tomorrow.

To begin with, Datacom Solutions - a joint venture between Venugopal N Dhoot’s Videocon Industries and industrialist Mahendra Nahata’s Jumbo Techno Services - is commencing its network rollout on August 15.

The company had earlier received spectrum and was scheduled to roll out services by December 15, 2008.

D-Link, an IT company foraying into the telecom space, has chosen Independence Day for the launch of its videophone. Even though the company had announced its venture earlier, the official launch is taking place on Friday.

According to D-Link (India) Executive Chairman K R Naik, “the phone is completely made in India and is the result of our focused research on building a product that is completely Indian. The hardware, software and all the major ingredients that go into the making of a videophone are developed in the country”.

“It’s only natural we launch the product on Independence Day, rejoicing with the spirit of freedom,” Naik added.

Billionaire and industrialist BK Modi’s mobile handset-manufacturing unit Spice Corporation is launching its global operations from Singapore on Friday. The company is setting up its global headquarters in Singapore and is gearing up for listing on the global bourses.

Staffing company TeamLease Service is launching a job hotline service in 11 Indian languages on August 15. The company has also announced training programmes for people unable to find jobs.

“An unemployed of unemployable Indian is not a free Indian. This service is our Independence Day offering to India’s many labour market outsiders who have been handicapped in accessing India’s growth,” TeamLease Services chairman, Manish Sabharwal, said.

Marking the 61st Independence Day, online portal Webdunia is rolling out special features on its 9 Indian language sites. These include customised e-greeting cards and painted visuals of historic monuments.

Bharti Airtel, the leading mobile service provider, has launched an ‘Independence Day special offer’ for its pre-paid customers in Delhi and the national capital region. The company has waived off the processing charges and is providing STD services at Re 1 for a month, on recharging with Rs 1947.

In a development which may untwist a few knickers around the internet, NASA scientists have now explained just what their Phoenix robot lander has found in the soil of Mars - and what the implications are for possible discovery of life on the Red Planet.

Following news that the White House had received secret briefings in advance of any public announcement, internet speculation was rife. Some believed that life - or anyway hospitable conditions for it - had been found. Others said that no, in fact proof positive had been found that Mars could not harbour life, perhaps casting doubt on the value of President Bush's ambitious plans to send a manned mission there.

The truth is somewhat more mundane, according to NASA. Some unusual chemicals, normally seen as poisonous, have been found in the Martian soil at the lander's location. However, according to the NASA boffins, the presence of these perchlorates doesn't mean that life can't exist on Mars.

"Finding perchlorates is neither good nor bad for life, but it does make us reassess how we think about life on Mars," said Michael Hecht from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory - in charge of one of the Phoenix's main dirt-sniffing instruments.

NASA says:

Perchlorates are found naturally on Earth at such places as Chile's hyper-arid Atacama Desert. The compounds are quite stable and do not destroy organic material under normal circumstances. Some microorganisms on Earth are fueled by processes that involve perchlorates, and some plants concentrate the substance. Perchlorates are also used in rocket fuel and fireworks.

So, if we're following this correctly*, there could possibly be Martian animals with perchlorate-fuelled metabolisms, living off perchlorate-concentrating plants. Though there would be a significant risk of these creatures catching fire or exploding if upset - not unlike Terry Pratchett's Discworld dragons, in fact.

On the other hand, you do get the vibe that NASA would really rather not have found perchlorates - indeed would have infinitely preferred it if a little green man had walked up and peered into Phoenix's cameras by now.

Bharthi To Bring 3G in INDIA

NEW DELHI, INDIA: Bharti Airtel today announced that it would launch the I-phone 3G in India on August 22.

According to the company, the I-phone 3G combines all the revolutionary features of iPhone plus 3G networking that is twice as fast.

It provides built-in GPS for expanded location-based mobile services, and iPhone 2.0 software which includes support for Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync and runs hundreds of third party applications available through the new App Store, said a press release.

"iPhone has been the iconic technology revelation of this year," said Sanjay Kapoor, president of mobile services at Bharti Airtel.

"Airtel has been at the forefront of innovation and customer delight in the Indian telecom sector. Introducing iPhone 3G to India further underscores our commitment to enrich the communication experience of all Airtel users."

Lenovo netbook details revealed

Lenovo has revealed more information of its upcoming netbook models, the 10.2-inch IdeaPad S10 and 8.9-inch IdeaPad S9. Both netbooks will launch in the China market in September with availability likely in October, according to the company.

The IdeaPad S9 includes an 8GB SSD while the S10 has an 80GB hard drive. Both will feature an Intel Atom N270 processor, 1GB memory, Express Card slot, two USB ports, a 4-in-1 card reader and webcam.

Both models use the same industrial design and have a keyboard that is only 15% smaller than a traditional keyboard. Additionally, both models feature an LED backlit panel, weight around 1kg, and will be offered with either Linux or Windows XP.

The IdeaPad S9 will be priced at NT$12,900 (US$418.99) and the IdeaPad S10 will cost NT$17,900, Lenovo detailed.

Samsung has launched its new range of four Point-and-shoot cameras, which include interesting features like, high-definition output to HDTVs, HD video capture, large touch screens, and even music and video playback via iPod.

The line-up includes the TL34HD, TL9, SL310W and SL201. Among these, the TL34HD is being considered as the most advanced point-and-shoot digital camera in Samsung's history.

The TL34HD includes 14.7 megapixel camera, a 3-inch touchscreen LCD, a Schneider lens with 28mm wide-angle focus length and 3.6x optical zoom. The most attractive feature in the TL34HD, is its ability to capture HD video in 720p resolution, and port this content over to HDTV sets using the optional HDMI CEC cradle ($79.99), The cradle has its own remote and is compatible with HDTVs via HDMI connection. It's priced at $329.95 and is expected to ship in September 2008.

The next one, Samsung TL9 is 10 megapixel camera, with 2.7 inch LCD, internal 5x optical zoom, dual image stabilization and dual analogue gauges located next to the power button which displays the remaining battery life and memory capacity. It's a bit cheaper than the other models at $229.95.

Cisco introduces new products; Indian company in foreign collaboration

There have been two recent developments in the world of data centres, both with an India connection. These are India-based APW President Systems' tie-up with London-based Global DataCenter Management, and the introduction of new products and professional services under its Data Centre 3.0 portfolio by networking leader Cisco.

To all those confused about what a data centre actually is, it can basically be defined as a facility used to house computer systems and associated components, such as telecommunications and storage systems. It generally includes redundant or backup power supplies, redundant data communications connections, environmental controls (e.g., air conditioning, fire suppression), and special security devices.

The main purpose of a data centre is running the applications that handle the core business and operational data of the organization. Such systems may be proprietary and developed internally by the organization, or bought from enterprise software vendors. Such common applications are ERP and CRM systems.

Data centres are also used for off site backups. Companies may subscribe to backup services provided by a data centre.

IBM Unveils Energy Efficiency Plan

IBM has announced the launch of the second phase of Project Big Green (PBG 2.0) in India. With this, it plans to introduce new products and services in the country to help enterprises build “greener” technology infrastructures that can meet growing business requirements while realizing rapid financial benefits from such investments. Last year, IBM had launched Project Big Green and committed $1 billion globally to deliver technologies that help clients dramatically increase the level of energy efficiency in their data centers.

With Project Big Green, IBM introduced unique offerings like Scalable Modular Data Center (SMDC) in the Indian market last year. With PBG 2.0, it is looking at further building up on the success that it has created with SMDCs and help clients make their IT greener.

According to IDC's latest report titled "Assessment of Business Opportunity for Datacenter Services in India 2008", nearly 17 percent of Indian enterprises faced 'power and cooling' as a challenge in 2007; by 2009 nearly 22 percent of enterprises are expected to face the same.

To help clients address these challenges, IBM has introduced modular, energy-efficient data center designs for the Indian market to power businesses ranging from large enterprises to small organizations. The new data centers, which can reduce energy consumption by as much as 50 percent, include Portable Modular Data Center (PMDC) which provides a fully functional data center in a pod-like form with a complete physical infrastructure including power and cooling systems and remote monitoring; Enterprise Modular Data Center (EMDC) which is an enterprise class data center “shrink-wrapped” and standardized from 5,000 sq ft up to 20,000 sq ft.; High Density Zone (HDZ) which is a modular system providing incremental cooling and power capability in existing data centers that are tapped out of capacity.

“As Indian organizations eye high growth in their business, they want to be more conscious and efficient in the manner they consume and pay for energy,” said Steve Sams, Vice-President, Global Site and Facilities Services, IBM Corporation. “With the launch of the second phase of Project Big Green, clients in India will have access to some of the most advanced green technologies and services for their data centers.”

Having built and managed nearly 300,000 sq ft of data center space in the country already, IBM is confident of further increasing its marketshare with the launch of these new and innovative datacenter solutions. IBM also announced the success it has had with Indian clients since the launch of Project Big Green. The company revealed it has signed over a dozen clients for its Scalable Modular Data Centers or SMDCs since the time it was introduced in India last year. NSA looking into security concerns over Blackberry

New Delhi, July 12In a bid to find a solution to the security concerns around Blackberry services, the National Security Adviser is now supervising a discussion between National Test Research Organisation, under the Home Ministry, Department of Telecom and Canada-based Research In Motion.

The discussions are being held to find a spot on RIM’s network where the data traffic passing through Blackberry could be intercepted by security agencies.

The agencies had earlier rejected any temporary solution to the Blackberry controversy and told the Government that it must make sure that traffic originating and terminating on the device should not travel outside the country without proper monitoring.

DoT was considering deploying certain software that would allow the security agencies to snoop into Blackberry network without having to break into the service codes.

Blackberry handsets are designed by Research In Motion and uses high encryption code, making it impossible for the Indian agencies to monitor data being transmitted by users.

The DoT had earlier asked the company to set up a local server in the country which would allow the security forces to snoop into the network. However, Research In Motion said that it was not possible to give decryption codes or set up a local data centre in the country.

The DoT had earlier asked RIM to give its codes to Indian security agencies that will enable them to monitor the data being transmitted through Blackberry. The key problem was that Indian agencies do not have the required technology to monitor data that has encryption codes higher than 40 bits.

On the issue of setting up a local data centre within the country, RIM had said that Blackberry was designed to perform as a global system independent of geography. “The location of data centres and the customer’s choice of wireless network are irrelevant factors from a security perspective since end-to-end encryption is utilised,” RIM had said.

NEW DELHI: Social networking site MySpace today said it will provide integrated MySpace Mobile applications on iPhones through Apple's application stores.

The application would be available worldwide in 12 languages by the end of July 2008.

The new mobile application has been designed for the portable screen of iPhone, the company said in a statement.

A key feature of the application includes the instant photo uploading from the iPhone to a MySpace profile, it added.

Chris DeWolfe, CEO and Co-Founder of MySpace, said, "The global MySpace community will love MySpace Mobile on iPhone. With its rich features it empowers the community with complete control over their global MySpace network right from the palm of their hand."

IBM India develops new tool to mask customers' secret

IBM's India Research Laboratory has developed an advanced data protection technology to safeguard Call Centre and Information Technology Enabled Service (ITES) from leaking vital information and falling into miscreants' hands. The novel device would mask the secret data and information of clients around the world.

The technology, which has been developed by the researchers at the IBM, is a speech analytics tool that helps in providing security and privacy to the customers' confidential data, thus augments customers' satisfaction and trust on the company.

The device detects and guards private and vital information amassed from audio recordings of conversations between call centre agents and customers. The technology is a new one in itself and was being felt much needed by the BPO industry as some cases of leaking secret data in past had attacked on their credibility among markets as well as customers.

"Designed to transform data for better security and privacy, this technology, developed by IBM Research, helps to ensure effective measures to safeguard company brands and manage customer trust,” said Dr. Guruduth Banavar, Director, IBM India Research Laboratory.The conversation between agents and clients are recorded in a call centre for multiple purposes such as auditing, personnel training, and quality management. Before the invention of this “data mask technology” the secret information during interaction were leaked to the miscreants, which could misuse it.

But, the latest technology using speech analytics and metadata automatically detects the audio or screen recordings that contain sensitive information such as customers' bank account number, PAN number, credit card number, social security numbers and alike other confidential information and its unique voice and screen masking capabilities blocks that portion and thus prevents from vulnerability of data.

Although the technology can be applied in any industry for protection from leaking sensitive information, its use particularly in mushrooming outsourcing industry, say call centre, where the demand to protect customers' secret information is prime one. The latest tool will not only protect the customers' confidential data, but in turn would enhance their trust on the company resulting into the spate of customers.
