GOSH： Please stop complaining

Just now I was having lunch at the pantry... heard these two women talking about "English"... it was actually about English accent. They complained about Indian accents. They found it hard to understand and get what the Indians are talking about.

it is true that the Indians do possess very strong accent. However, there is nothing to complain about. I used to complain on this before and I realized that I was wrong. It was not the problem of their accent. The problem lies on I had very poor listening. I could not understand the good English coming from a strong accent.

On the other hand, I really wanted to ask those two women. How about your accent? I have not heard a single English word coming out from your gentle mouth. Do you think your English is better understood than the Indian ones? I am not sure how good your English is. Hope it is great! Otherwise, you are just making yourself lose face because you cannot even speak good English, how can you comment about other's English then. If your pieces of rotten English can be understood by other native English speakers and good English speakers, it is not because you speaker better but rather the listeners can listen and understand better.

After all, in communication, accent problem does occur. The reason should not all be pushed to the speakers. The listeners should have at least 50% of the responsibility to check on their listening. If they have heard so many different accents already, how could they just simple do not understand one? I know some accents are very strong and might take a little longer to get used to and get comfortable with. Nevertheless, it is a matter of whether you want to listen or not.

I picked up (luckily, it was through. Sometimes, it doesn't)
"there is an express mail for you!", the receptionist said, "please trouble you to come down and pick it up. "

I went down!

there was this article on Fortune describing the eight signs that indicates you need to change a job.

basically they are:
"

1. You don't fit in. Your values don't match the company's. If your colleagues are "dishonest and focused on getting ahead regardless of legal or moral barriers," Bayer says, it's time to quit before an Enron-style scandal sinks the ship.

2. Your boss doesn't like you and you don't like him or her. If your boss never asks your opinion, and never wants to chat or have lunch with you, and if you disagree with her agenda and dislike her style, your days are numbered. Adds Bayer: "If you've ever done something that undermined your boss, you might as well get out now."

3. Your peers don't like you. Feeling isolated, gossiped about, and excluded from the inner workings of the organization is a very bad sign, as is feeling that you're not part of the team and wouldn't socialize with your colleagues even if they asked you.

4. You don't get assignments that demonstrate the full range of your abilities. "Watching all the good assignments go to others, while you're given the ones that play to your weaknesses or are beneath your professional level, should tell you something," says Bayer. Likewise, if it seems the boss doesn't trust your judgment, you're in trouble.

I went to dinner with a friend of mine tonight who works at one of the major internet portal companies. We talked about everything from airplanes to how hard it is to hire in Silicon Valley. One topic we touched on was how hard it is to keep up with the latest and greatest technologies coming out of the tech industry.

So many new, very cool products are launching these days that it is *really* hard to keep track of it all. I mentioned how I probably spend at least an hour or so each day just combing through various blogs, trying to keep on top of everything. So which blogs are my daily reads?

Here's a list of what appears in my RSS reader each day:

AppleInsider - that Steve Jobs just keeps on innovating
Autoblog - planes, cars, they all go fast and I can't stop reading about them
CenterNetworks - all tech news all the time
Consumerist - ok, sometimes it's really interesting to see what scam these guys have uncovered

GigaOM - Om and Mark were the first two folks to blog on meebo...ever! Om's blog has really good, deep industry insight

SocketSite - real estate in SF - it's so expensive, why even bother?

What's Web 2.0 to me?

åI think the first time I heard this term was last year while I just arrived at Silicon Valley. In fact, the hype was started way before that. I think by now the topic has been discussed about 18 months. It was 8 months after it was started that I got involved and participated in the discussion.

Back then, the concept of Web 2.0 is very blur. I could not picture and understand what’s Web 2.0. I thought I had not even experienced what Web 1.0 was about. How funny was my thought! As more and more start-up started working on it, the blurr concept became clearer and clearer. It seems to me that it is not longer a concept but indeed some technologies - the Web 2.0 technologies.

To me, Web 2.0 focuses on user engagement and experiences on the web. it is exemplifed by the visual effect of the website done by the web 2.0 companies. that’s just the appearance. There are many layers of technologies that transformed the framework, applications and features. One very good example is the emerging programing languages, like Ruby on Rails.

In my opinion, Web 2.0 technologies have gone into the stage where vast adoption will take place. Just like 7 years ago, every company and each individual wanted a website. (Maybe that’s Web 1.o). Now companies started looking at the technology innovations to help them solve their problem.

Which company will catch the wave and lead the innovation? it is very hard to tell and difficult to say. many are doing it but few are doing the right things for the companies or individual users. there are cool things everyday…. however, which cool thing will keep you cool all the time is still a question mark!

All the best to the battle… it seems a long way… and it can be short if the one appeared.

feeling lost

i felt really lost yesterday...
i went to cut my hair... instructions given to the hairdresser was not clear...
ended up in a hairstyle i dont really like.
went to buy food to cook...

ended up buying lots of snacks and ice-cream...

i wanted to cook meat....
ended up forgetting it...

wanted to clean the house thoroughly
ended up working on the surfaces only...
i felt really lost...
what i was doing... what should do!

i think it's a phase that i have to go through. things are changing.
it's weird... i guess....

oh btw, one of my classmate passed away... somebody said it's suicide and i could not believe it.

so strange!!!

Take-aways at AAMA about China

1. practical experiences working in China
- David needs some work experience in China: internship? part-time?

2. Behave like a REAL Chinese
- David has been keeping it up! keep the good job up! Friends, esp Chinese, please point out to David if he does

something stupid, k?

3. Overseas experiences are good BUT those are only assets belong to you which are not previlliges.
- David should take overseas experiences as enriching, fun, learning and happy as possible. World is never that

small!

4. Groom management team from stretch (starting company in China) [professional managers are not good to be put

above people suddenly]
- David should obtain some skills in terms of management but not to be a professinonal manager. i don think that

could be a career. sounds like VC… I’d rather join VC area to help companies… that’s more professional than

professional manager…

5. everyone knows about how much colleauges are earning in China
- so don’t try to hide it. where there is a will, there is a way. that happens all the time in China. Only the

government has done something to cover certain history up… still we could find it out. paper can never cover up

fire.

6. Work with government officials to get to know the rules, so you might be able get around them.
- really practical… believe it or not, it’s all about connections and relationships… wherever you go and

whatever you do! it is a matter of how people look at it and how much is it? hmmmmm…. think about it

7.Understand the local cultures even within China.
- this is really a good point to talk about. In a big country, the cultures are different. certainly, there are

similarities. however, the focus shall be put on Differences.

8.Build the organizational trust
- it takes a whole lot to build trust in human relationship. if you look at people as individual cells, dont you

think that the organ that the cells made up shall not build its “organic” trust? it’s a bottom-up perspective…

9. Have local management leader is really important.
- do not treat it like a branch but an ‘entity’ that operates independently and colaborate with headquarters and

other offices… example? google and youtube…

10. Plan to go back to China? Or NOT?
- David has not changed his mind not going back to China yet. I don’t think he will. However, he will face a lot of

challenges. He will face it and deal with them well.

exmaple for you

there was this company set up their office in China. A team has been recruited and built up, primarily engineers

and support people. Local management team has yet to be built. After some time, a manager was hired with 1M salary. OVernight, the engineers under the managers stopped working.

why? the engineers are the ones working and now someone is hired with so much higher salary to oversee them. they are not happy about it.

I am not sure whether I shall put down this!
I just feel that it was really something great!

I watched three movies in a roll…..

1. 300
2. Dead Silence
3. Zodiac

I like the first one the best…

2nd one is a horror movie… it was pretty good about doll story… the ending was really surprising that Jamie died… coz he screamed finally…i thought he could stand till last… apparently, something really shocking happened… it was forgivable…

3rd one is a true case and yet a mystery… it’s good to see the movie that was shot in the area nearby… however, due to the nature of the story, it is also kinda scary that it is just right around us. so… be careful when do things…

taking a step back would not lose your ego, pride or even respect. take a look at it a different way… esp looking at it positively… they people doing those bad things are just so pathetic… they cannot realize the love, the joy of being on the bright side. there is no fear in daily life of what’s goanna happen.

300 has a great story to tell… and if like all those kind a ancient scenes… fights for pride and their nation… great nationalists… great warriors and great father, husband and son

300 did not give pursian a good name out of it… i kinda doubt whether the ancient pursian did look like that or behaved like that before. i am on the bright side… though they are strong; they dont have to be the lord for everyone nearyby. what’s the point?

forming partnership and alliance is more important than killing each other. make the strong stronger…

back then, strategic thinking were always applicable.

alright…it’s time to take a nap… see you tml

hmm...hope i did not do anything bad to her...

She's really a strong women...
just migrated from china to US...
works in a restaurant with very little pay...

i respect her... as she really has a good and positive attitude towards life...

that's why... she did not stay in more comfortable chinese place... where she can live comfortably speaking chinese... she chose to challenge her...
working in a better enviroment... where customers speak english... it's a force to drive her to learn and learn and learn...

went to the restaurant she worked at. It was decent... very good environment. the manager is really very good... to be honest... superb... he's attentative and funny!
he is the person that drives the entire business.

but i sensed there was a little bit of insecurity when i left... when the hena asked about her... friends... yup... i tole her to truth that it was only my second time meeting her... and afterwards, they had a little bit of conversation... after that... i felt that her face turned to an anxious one... i was concerned that i did not bring her any trouble... i was trying to help her. gosh!!! hopefully, i was just too sensitive!!!
i will feel really bad if anything happened to her!
gosh!

I drive in California...
it's definitely a beautiful and great place...
but driving here might not be the best!
in fact, i think it's horrible...
people speed all the time...
they do not signal when making turns and changing lanes...
they assume that they are the BOSS on the road... the others are "stupid"

from my observation some time ago, i saw many people are on the phone while driving...
this is not a discrimination. but i saw a lot of female drivers on the phone all the time...
saying the women driving while phoning, the men here are not that great either...
you know what they do?
they READ while driving... it's not just once or twice..
the first time i saw it at HW92 West... on San Mateo Bridge... the guy was driving ALONE reading a BOOK at minimum 75 mph! he was driving a big SUV... gosh!

the other time, it was a Lexus owner... maroon color...
he was reading some documents while on the carpool lane... yes... ALONE... it was in the morning during the post rush hour time... about 9 plus... gosh... he was easily at 80 mph... he was also taking over other people...

yup... their driving skills might be good... but all the cars were auto-transmission... i bet they could even drive a manual car!!! ha ha....
