After further thought, I was a bit disappointed that I didn’t post more links. So with this post I want to offer a few more of my favorites links. This collection includes all kinds of sites including tutorials, blogs, roundups, reference sites, graphics links, and more. They also cover a wide range of skill levels so there should be something for everyone. Some are old, some are new, but all have been helpful to me in the past so I offer them in the hopes that they might help another. Even if someone only finds one new site or idea from this post, I’ll be glad to have helped.

<div style="width:315px; float:left" HTML, CSS, & design links
Blogs I frequent:
<a target=_blank" href="http://css-tricks.com/">css-tricks.com
<a target=_blank" href="http://scriptandstyle.com/">scriptandstyle.com
<a target=_blank" href="http://buildinternet.com/">buildinternet.com
<a target=_blank" href="http://speckyboy.com/">speckyboy.com
<a target=_blank" href="http://www.smashingmagazine.com/">smashingmagazine.com
<a target=_blank" href="http://cssglobe.com/news.asp">cssglobe.com
<a target=_blank" href="http://sixrevisions.com/">sixrevisions.com
<a target=_blank" href="http://www.noupe.com/">noupe.comk
<a target=_blank" href="http://design-newz.com/">design-newz.com
<a target=_blank" href="http://www.underconsideration.com/brandnew/">underconsideration.com
<a target=_blank" href="http://sharebrain.info/">sharebrain.info
<a target=_blank" href="http://www.instantshift.com/">instantshift.com
<a target=_blank" href="http://line25.com/">line25.com
<a target=_blank" href="http://webdesignledger.com/">webdesignledger.com
<a target=_blank" href="http://www.alistapart.com/">alistapart.com

General design:
<a target=_blank" href="http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2009/10/05/mastering-css-coding-getting-started/">Mastering CSS
<a target=_blank" href="http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2009/09/02/backgrounds-in-css-everything-you-need-to-know/">CSS Backgrounds
<a target=_blank" href="http://reference.sitepoint.com/css">Sitepoint reference
<a target=_blank" href="http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2009/08/17/taming-advanced-css-selectors/">Advanced CSS selectors
<a target=_blank" href="http://www.tutorial9.net/web-tutorials/quick-easy-css-development-with-firebug/">Firebug – I am not a big fan of styling tables, but with DataTables and jQuery UI themes this is a piece of cake. I will show you how you can make a beautiful table in just a few minutes. First you will need to download DataTables. Unzip the download and grab the DataTables.js and jquery.js files and put them in your public_html folder or htdocs folder for the site you want to implement DataTables on. Then we want to include those two files in the head of our HTML document as seen below.

<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/strict.dtd">

You can download all the pre-made themes using this link jquery-ui-themes-1.7.2.0.zip. Now lets unzip the downloaded themes zip file and grab the images folder, the jquery-ui.css file, and the ui.theme.css file from the theme you want to use and copy these to your public_html folder or htdocs folder. Then we want to include the jquery-ui.css file and the ui.theme.css file in the head of our HTML document as seen below.

<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/strict.dtd">

	</head>

Make sure you include the jquery-ui.css file and the ui.theme.css file before the main css file for your site. This will enable you to be able to override the styling of the jquery-ui.css file and the ui.theme.css file without modifying them allowing you to easily switch themes in the future. Now all we have to do is implement the script to add DataTables to our table.

<script type="text/javascript">

        $("#users").dataTable({"bJQueryUI": true});
    })
</script>

The above code implements DataTables on the table and the bJQueryUI option adds all the necessary classes to our table to work with the jQuery UI CSS framework.Next we need to specify a width for DataTables wrapper. DataTables automatically adds a wrapper with the id from the table and wrapper prefixed with an underscore as you can see below.

/* Wrapper created by DataTables */
#users_wrapper {
	width: 400px;
}

You should now have a table that looks similar to this depending on what theme you choose. (I used the vader theme for this demo)

Now we just need to add some styling to position the elements added by DataTables. They add ids to all the elements for easy styling. You can inspect the elements you want to position with FireBug to get the ids, or refer to the styling documentation on the DataTables website.In the main stylesheet for our site lets add the following.

/* Show # of entries element created by DataTables */

For many professionals, it’s a valuable tool that we must wield with precision on a daily basis. For others, it’s simply a way to check their bank account or find a goofy YouTube video to share with the family. Most have no idea just how much they might be missing, or even that they can be at risk of losing sensitive data like bank and credit card information. This post is intended mostly for the average Joe who might use his computer a few hours a week. I make a living with my web browser (as do many other millions), but this isn’t the case for many out there. This is meant to help them understand just how complex the web browser world is and why it’s important to stay current.

Their are two major issues that comprise most of the browser woes. First, there are plenty of different browsers out there to choose from (Internet Explorer, FireFox, Opera, Safari, Ice Weasel, etc.). And while having multiple choices is always a nice thing, the problem is that everyone of these browsers was created by different companies, with different programmers, so each browser has it’s own way of interpreting each web page it displays. Sadly, because of this, it’s not uncommon for bugs and glitches to occur. When they do pop up, they can most often be squashed by a simple software update or patch. In a perfect world, every web browser would be updated regularly and we would all be up to date and bug free. Sadly, this is not the case, and this leads us to our second biggest browser headache. There are far too many folks out there who are still using outdated browsers, some almost a decade old. For instance, one of the worst offenders in the Web world is the (still) popular Microsoft Internet Explorer 6. It was released in 2001 yet still holds a decent size market share in the browser world. The average American might not realize that his outdated browser is leaving him wide open for major security issues, or that upgrading will help to speed up his entire web surfing experience. Upgrading will also insure that the web pages he visits look their best. As I mentioned previously, some older browsers either get things wrong or can’t handle them at all, so keeping up to date will make sure you’re not missing anything.

So, what can you do? Well, first off, no matter what particular flavor of browser you choose (FireFox, Chrome, IE), just make sure it’s up to date. Then when installing, make sure you choose to keep automatic updates turned on (or at least manually update it often). This will make sure that you are always up to date and that your browser is kept as fast and secure as possible. It will also insure that every website you visit will look and function just as the designers and developers intended.

Here’s a few download links for some popular browsers: FireFox Internet Explorer 8 Google Chrome

How to help your Web Designer/Developer help you

Web Design

tips

Web Development

The hardest part of any project is bringing all of the involved parties together, getting them all on the same page and properly setting everyone’s expectations. If your web designer/developer knows exactly what your expectations are from the start, the faster and better he can meet them. This is accomplished with a bit of homework, ideally before even talking to any design firm. We’ve compiled a few tips to help you make your experience a bit smoother and also deliver a better end result.

1) Be prepared: Before starting any project, a client should take the time to prepare as much information as possible and build a requirements document. This is a detailed outline of what will be accomplished with the website/application and what is required. You should also list any features or must-have items you want to include, once again, with as much detail as possible. When drawing up this document, pretend you will be submitting it to a complete stranger. Would they be able to only read this document and fully understand what you’re trying to accomplish? It might sound like a lot of work to some but it will only help to save time and headaches both when asking for a quote and when the project actually begins. You’ll never hear a designer or developer complain about having too much information. This also relates to out next point…

2) Be specific: No one knows your business better than you. And because of this, you can’t assume that you’re web designer has the same understanding of your company as you. Being open and offering as much information as possible will help the designer deliver the best product possible. Email is a common communication tool in this business, so when replying, try to be as descriptive as possible. This will help to prevent mis-understandings and will also save time because it will help prevent follow-up clarification emails. This makes the entire design/development process much more efficient and faster.

3) Be open to ideas: Sometimes the best ideas and intentions just won’t translate right onto the web. A good designer/developer should have the confidence and knowledge to tell a customer when they think something isn’t a good idea. A good designer/developer should also be able to suggest a better way to accomplish the same task, so make sure you’re open to ideas and suggestions.

4) Be available: In this business, the two biggest challenges are information and communication. Throughout the project, the client will constantly be asked to provide approval or further clarification of something. If a client fails to respond in a timely fashion, this can quickly take it’s toll on a projects time line. Sadly, this is a very common problem in this industry. It is commonly preferred to do most communication through email for both accountability and reference. Most firms have multiple clients so it’s much easier to reference an email while working on a particular project. With this in mind, it is recommend that the client should try to check their email more often then normal, just to prevent any delays and keep the process moving along nicely.

My "must check" bookmark list

Web Design

CSS

Design

Frontend

Graphic Design

jQuery

XHTML

So I’ll admit it, I’m a bookmark-aholic. I have a folder of “must check” bookmarks that I visit either on a daily or at least weekly basis. Most of them center around front-end web design or design in general and feature great information and resources from some of the greatest design minds on the planet. I use them for keeping up with trends, learning new skills, inspiration, and reference. My bookmarks are one of my most important tools and I wanted to share my “must check” list for others to use.

General Front End Design:
sixrevisions.com/ css-tricks.com/ sharebrain.info/ smashingmagazine.com/ instantshift.com/ webdesignledger.com/ sohtanaka.com/ webresourcesdepot.com/ webdesignerdepot.com/ olliekav.com/ woork.blogspot.com/ blog.spoongraphics.co.uk/ noupe.com/ colorburned.com/ v7n.com/ abduzeedo.com/ blog.themeforest.net/

Tutorials:
nettuts.com/ tutorial9.net/
jQuery & Development
jqueryfordesigners.com/ webappers.com/
Graphic Design & Misc.
underconsideration.com freshbump.com/ ilovetypography.com/ mindnever.com/art/
Social/News:
designfloat.com/
<div style="clear: left";>

A New Blogining

dZero Web Design & Development

CSS

Web Design

Web Development

WordPress

XHTML

We use WordPress for a lot of our client sites and figured it was time to finally get rid of our infrequently updated clunky old blog (backend was coded by me).
