My friend Tomoki Ito and his partner JP Lam will be doing a soft launch opening of their new poke bowl & shave ice concept in Manoa Valley, tomorrow (Tuesday, September 25th, 2018) from 11am-3pm, so please head down there and show your support.

Using only the freshest fish from the auction purchased daily or every other day, Off the Hook Poke Market will carry some of your favorite poke standards like Ahi Limu or Spicy Ahi, but thanks to the culinary skills (and creativity) of Tomo-san, they will also feature some creative combinations that you’ve probably never seen anywhere else before.

It sounds like they will be starting with two “bowl” (plate) sizes: a mini (which is about a 1/3 lb of poke) and a regular (which is about a 1/2 pound). We were able to sample the mini and that was actually pretty filling. Once they get their rhythm down, you can expect to see them add items to their menu, like possible soups and maybe even cooked specials. Shave Ice is something they will be offering from the beginning, which will be served with all home made syrups.

If the partners look familiar to you, it’s because you’ve probably seen them many times before. Tomo-san was the former manager and operator of the Yajima-Ya Lunchwagon, and then the restaurant, and JP has a show on KIKU TV called Itadakimasu and has also toured around the country with his band The Dukes of Surf. With Tomo-san’s culinary skillset and JP’s business acumen, OHPM is sure to be a smash success.

Off the Hook Poke Market is located in beautiful Manoa valley at 2908 East Manoa Road, Honolulu, HI 96822… The former Garden Isle Cafe location in the same green building as Starbucks and Andy’s Sandwiches across Manoa Marketplace.

Check out below for their official announcement on Instagram and a video of my short interview with them below that. Hope to see you there!

We all know the iconic Rainbow Drive-In off Kapahulu (3308 Kanaina Ave., Honolulu, HI 96815). Founded by Seiju and Ayako Ifuku 57 years ago (in 1961), Rainbow’s has become a Hawaii institution for those locals and tourists alike seeking the best in local kine grindz.

Today (May 2nd, 2018), Rainbow’s has officially opened its doors to a second location on the corner of Houghtailing and N School Street in Kalihi (1339 N School Street, Honolulu, HI 96817). They are starting off with manageable hours of operation from 11am-3pm, but will increase those hours as they get through the initial bumps that every new operation goes through.

The property has its own parking lot, Makai of the (North School Street) building, but it was closed today, perhaps due to any last minute paving or setting that is still taking place. Once they open the lot, it appears as though there will be about 15 stalls or so available for patrons. From the signage, it also looks like Gyu-Kaku, Aloha Cones and KandK Kitchen (currently down the road at 1223 N School Street) will have future homes in this very building. Kalihi is getting blessed with some (more) mean eats in the near future.

Below are some shots from today’s first day of operations for Rainbow Drive-In Kalihi. Enjoy!

This is why a place like Aloha Poke Shop is a virtual gold mine for the poke lover at heart.

While the ingredients for your typical poke recipe are pretty standard (Hawaiian salt, limu, inamona, sesame oil, etc.) and limited to what one can find at the local market, the options at Aloha Poke Shop can make the imagination go wild with the possibilities.

Originally starting off as Coffee Factory, a small coffee shop in the Remington College Building in downtown Honolulu, owner Jason Miyanaga and his wife Michele introduced fresh poke and sashimi to their menu.

“We were located in a non-cooking unit so poke and sashimi was a perfect addition to our lunch menu,” says Jason. “Mark Mitsuyasu, who was a customer at the time, saw me cutting a small fillet of ahi and we starting talking. The next day he took me to the fish auction and introduced me to some of the workers. He has become one of my good friends and I have learned so much about fish and the fishing industry [thanks to him]. Priceless!”

Jason is no stranger to fish though. Spending his school breaks in Hilo, his grandpa used to take him to Suisan for ahi, Coconut Island for pualu, Keaukaha for reef fish and up the Wailoa River for mullet and Samoan crab.

After graduating from Mid-Pacific Institute, he attended the University of Hawaii at Hilo, followed by the culinary program at Kapiolani Community College.

Over time, the introduction of fresh fish to the menu was such a hit at Coffee Factory and they decided to officially rebrand themselves as Aloha Poke Shop – with partnerships with professional chef Eddie Mafnas and Kapolei High Culinary Instructor Jeff Sampson – on November 28th of last year.

With such a deep background with food, quality and care is very apparent here. Everything is made fresh to order, using the always fresh, never frozen, “boat to bowl” mantra.

“We are at the auction early in the morning to purchase top quality ahi from the local boats known to deliver the best fish,” says Jason. “Each bowl of poke is made fresh to order, never scooped from tray of poke that was made prior to ordering. If you’re looking for previously frozen tuna products that have been treated with carbon monoxide, tasteless smoke or other preservatives to mask the true quality of the fish, go elsewhere. You won’t find those products here! By purchasing local, we support Hawaii’s economy, responsible fisheries, sustainable agriculture, food security and our local community.”

And now, let’s get that imagination going! To start, there is a “Build your own Bowl” option where you pick your size (regular @ $9.95 or large @ $11.95), bedding (white rice, brown rice, sushi rice or Waipoli greens), and protein (Ahi, Salmon, Hamachi or Tofu).

This is where it gets fun. You can choose from a selection of sauces/seasonings (shoyu, Sriracha, wasabi mayo, spicy mayo, wasabi shoyu, spicy shoyu, sesame oil, unagi sauce, chili pepper water, sea salt) and toppings (green onion, white onion, cucumber, tomato, ginger, bubu arare, furikake, toasted sesame seeds, inamona, chili pepper flakes, natto, tobiko, and limu, or Ikura for $1 more)

Grab your chopsticks!

After more than 40 years of memories, today, Monday, July 31st 2017 marks the final day for Ward Warehouse’s existence since opening way back in 1975. For many of us, this is the sad end of an era. The closing of an iconic, truly “local” shopping center that quite possibly played host to our first shopping experience without our parents, first date at Spaghetti Factory (or Kincaid’s depending on your budget), and many other firsts.

For me, it hits home a little harder because I have personal friends who own/run stores like Eden in Love, Paina Cafe, The Cut, and RIX, who are being affected by this closure. Stephanie and Darrell Ching, owners of Novel-T World, were also the first to give my apparel brand VH07V its first shot at retail when they took a chance on me/it back in 2012. And lastly, thanks to the generosity of the Howard Hughes Corporation, we were able to find our “home” at Ward Village and throw our first Rice Fest event here at Ward Warehouse, after bouncing around from location to location in years prior.

My mother-in-law was able to visit one last time today and sent over some photos that made me reminisce and actually inspired me to write this blog. I wish nothing but success for the 60 or so displaced businesses as well as the future plans for The Gateway towers that will be taking its place. I just hope that the retail stores on the ground floor will give us a flashback of what Ward Warehouse was to many of us…

Per the Star-Advertiser, here are what some of the tenants will be doing post Ward Warehouse:

The line outside.

Ono Hawaiian Foods, thank you very much for serving some of the best Hawaiian Foods Hawaii has ever eaten over the last 50 plus years. You will be sorely missed and we wish your ohana the very best in your future endeavors.

If you’ve never been, or want to go back one more time, there’s still time. They are said to be closing in August. I recommend going early to avoid the line. It can get hot outside while you wait, though they restaurant does generously offer umbrellas for the waiting patrons outside. It was refreshing to see this type of hospitality.

[vc: Playing for Change]

“Hawai’i Aloha” features dozens of Hawai‘i’s top artists across many genres, and over 1,000 youth from 10 Hawaiian charter schools in one epic song. Recorded live across 27 locations, this is Hawaiiʻs most widely known song, used to close important gatherings of all sizes. It is a song of unity and Aloha ‘Aina (Aloha for one’s birthplace, land and home).

About this collaboration: Mana Maoli, a Hawaiian nonprofit, teamed up with Playing For Change and 4 Miles as part of their Mana Mele Project, which features a solar mobile studio and a Music & Multimedia Academy. Alongside the youth – on campus, in real-world settings, and in this video, is the “Mana Mele Collective” – over 200 artists, engineers, and filmmakers who donate their time and talents to mentorships, recordings, and concerts in support of these schools. We hope you enjoy watching this collaborative effort as much as we enjoyed creating it!

The next stop in our poke seeking adventure takes us to the mom and pop food specialty store appropriately called Local Cravings.

Located in the middle of Kalihi’s popular City Square Shopping Center, Local Cravings was actually a spin off of owner Jim Shigemoto’s original business, the custom T-Shirt printing shop called the T-Shirt Lab.

“We actually owned that one first,” explains Shigemoto, a Castle High grad. “The landlord knew that I was a Seafood Manager so he asked if I wanted to open up a poke shop [next door].”

Shigemoto is no stranger to the world of seafood. As a former Seafood Manager at Foodland for 15 years, he understands the importance of using fresh seafood and is adamant about never using frozen fish in his poke.

“There’s a BIG difference between fresh and frozen. Being a Seafood Manger for that long, [I know that] fresh makes a difference.”

At his shop, Shigemoto offers local favorites like Spicy Ahi, Shoyu and Limu with kukui nut, as well as Spicy Crab & Ahi, which has been catching on as of late.

Can’t decide? No worries. You can actually mix and match your favorite hot food item with your favorite poke choice, making it the ultimate “have it your way” poke bowl experience.

Building on his success, Shigemoto recently expanded his reach by opening up a second location in the form of a mobile lunch wagon. Parked at Waiahole Poi Factory out on the windward side, you can get your poke bowl fix here on the daily.

So whether it’s windward or town, hot or cold, spicy or limu, the possibilities are endless. Rest assured though that you will never find poke bowls here using previously frozen fish. Your local cravings can count on that.

Keeaumoku Seafood has long been regarded – by those in the know – as one of the ono-est places to get fresh poke by the pound. Named after its location off Keeaumoku Street, in a tiny 5 store strip mall just south of the H1, they have slowly been gaining quite a cult following as of late.

Reggie and wife Lylanie (Lanie) Tagalicod took over the business approximately 4 years ago from Kyung Cha, the owner of Kyung’s Seafood on King Street. Continuing the tradition of “fresh, never frozen” was of the utmost importance to the Tagalicods upon taking the place over.

We use large sized, sashimi grade quality on all our poke and sashimi platters. Always fresh from the auction block. Never frozen.”

With just 8 stalls, capped at 20 minutes a piece, scoring a stall here is not easy, but when the poke is this good and this reasonable, you find a way. On this occasion, we picked up an assortment of items off their regular menu including their Super Deluxe Sashimi Salad ($13.95), Ahi Belly Plate Combo ($10.95), Poke Salad ($7.99), and super popular Poke Plate ($10.95).
