How to Easily Transfer Files Across Cloud Services

2011-10-16T20:04:00.000-07:00

How to Easily Transfer Files Across Cloud Services:

Cloud storage services like Google Docs, Dropbox, Amazon S3, etc. have made it easy for you keep your important files and documents online. These services are mostly free and you can have multiple accounts on them as long as you use separate email addresses.

This leads to another problem though. When you have files spread across multiple cloud services, managing them can be challenge. You may have stored one group of files on Dropbox, the other on Google Docs while some of the older files could be hosted on your old Google Docs account that you abandoned long ago.

Would it be nice if there were an easy to way to manage / search all your online files from one place without having to download them to the computer first?

Meet Otixo – an impressive web-app that lets you access files stored across different cloud service from a central location. To get started, you associate your Dropbox, Google Docs, Picasa, Amazon S3 and other online accounts with Otixo and then you can easily move or copy files between any of your accounts via simple drag-n-drop.

Otixo supports FTP so it can also be used to directly transfer files from any FTP server to Google Docs or Amazon S3 without having to write complicated scripts. You can even add multiple accounts from the same cloud service - like your old and new Google Docs accounts – and transfer file across these accounts easily.

Otixo offers unified search to help you quickly find all your files that are otherwise spread across multiple cloud services. You can delete files, create new folders, or upload files from the desktop to any of the associated cloud services. Everything just works. [via Netted]

Boost your Wi-Fi Signal with an Empty Can of Coke

2011-10-13T04:15:00.000-07:00

Boost your Wi-Fi Signal with an Empty Can of Coke:

A piece of Aluminum foil is probably the easiest and cheapest way to boost your Wi-Fi signal.

You just need to position the foil behind the antenna of your wireless router and the curved foil will then direct the Wi-Fi signals in your preferred direction thus boosting the overall signal strength.

Other than using an Aluminum foil, as Kim Komando explains in the following video, you may also make your own Wi-Fi extender at home using an empty can of beer or soda.

The cans are obviously more sturdy than the foil and the can’s lid acts as a stand but you need to be a bit more careful while cutting the can’s body with that knife. Also make sure that the can’s inner body is completely dry before you slip it into the router’s antenna.

10 Tricks for YouTube Publishers/Uploaders

2011-10-13T04:12:00.000-07:00

10 Tricks for YouTube Publishers/Uploaders:

YouTube has become one of the most effective website that many publishers, webmasters and authors use to get more traffic to their blog or website. Thousands of online marketing professionals use YouTube as one of the main method to market their business. It hooks visitor’s attention far more quickly than text or images. However, more than 48 hours of videos are uploaded on YouTube per minute. So, how can you make your video more visible and viral?

Below are some of basic optimization steps to get more traffic and more views from YouTube:

1. Choose a catchy title – Add rich Meta title, description and keywords related to your video. Do not use random one because it will affect your video views, which is crawled by the search engines. Try to pick the keywords that will bring more traffic and leads to your website. And make sure you must include the keywords in title and description.

2. Write articles about your video – Create a brief blog post on the same topic as your video that links to your article. Make sure that you are optimizing YouTube SEO.

3. Use customized thumbnails – Create a good thumbnail that catches eyes. As you all know more than 50% of views come from related videos.

4. Encourage comments on your video – Allow visitors to comment on your video. Because the more you can work on other social activities, the more exposure you will get. If you create more buzz, users may come to your page to see what has commented.

5. Use hyperlink in the video description box – Links starting with “www.“ will not be considered as hyperlinks. So make sure to include “http:// “ in the description box. This is important if you want to drive more traffic to your website.

6. Use annotations –It is a great way to point your visitors to watch out your other videos. At the end of every YouTube video, create a text effect (call to action) like “click here for more videos” or “subscribe to my videos”. It redirects your users to another video of yours instead of leaving it.

7. Keep your videos short – If your videos are short then people will love to share them. If it is too long then it may become boring. Remove unnecessary parts by cutting either by Windows Movie Maker or built in YouTube tool.

8. Link with social networking sites – let the world know about your video. You should embed your video into social media sites like twitter, reddit and facebook.

9. Initially make your video as private, allow it to process, do all the customization and then make your video as public once it is completed. No one likes incomplete work.

10. Describe your video in details. But don’t make it as spammy.

We hope that the above steps will help you to create effective videos based on the keywords and get you more visitors on YouTube.

Money tips for college students

2011-07-18T12:29:00.000-07:00

Money tips for college students: "

Being a student these days is not always easy, especially when it comes to financces. As a student its really easy to fall behind financially. As the school year progresses it gets even harder to keep up with all the expenses. Working through university is not an easy task, and I for one never seem to break even. In the past first few years of school, I have had to take out bad credit pay day loans to help me cover all of my monthly expenses. Although not entirely proud of it, I have come to appreciate the fact that I have had the chance to take out a loan like this to help me out. Now being in my final year of school, I have come up with a system and budgeting plan that has helped me cover all of my expenses and leave me with extra money to spend, so I wanted to share my simple tips with you in the hopes that you too can find a way to stretch your money and live a comfortable student life.

A lot of students get financial aid these days, even when parent's can afford to help pay for some of their expenses. One thing that tends to occur when students get their loans is that they get excited and want to buy things for their apartments or tend to overspend without a true plan or budget. This leads me to my first tip.

Make a budget

Managing your money is one of the most important things you can do. So many students fail to plan for the semester because they are too busy with classes and work. If you are relying solely on student loans to get you through the semester, than a solid budget is going to be essential in keeping you on target. Creating a budget is very simple. Figure out what your main expenses are rent, food, gas etc, and come up with a daily or weekly amount that you can spend on those things.

Get a part time job

Extra money is always needed, no matter how busy you are if you prioritize your time well, you can squeeze in a day or two of work for some extra cash. A job will help you to pay for extras or maybe just help you make it by without a squeeze.

Avoid credit cards

Credit cards are surely the number one way to get yourself in financial trouble. Don't get a credit card unless it is completely necessary. Most times students will use credit cards for things that are unneeded and unrelated to education purposes. Not getting a credit card is probably the only way to avoid the temptation of not over spending.

Pay your bills on time

Seems pretty straight forward, but you wouldn't believe how easy it is to get side tracked and forget a due date. Organization is key here. Keep a calendar and mark all of your due dates, or even better have bills come automatically out of your account on a monthly basis.

These easy tips will surely help you through the school year if you follow them. Remember that it takes hard work and determination to take control of your life and your finances.

Amazon Silently Enters the Indian Fashion Market

2011-07-18T12:10:00.000-07:00

Amazon Silently Enters the Indian Fashion Market: "

The online market for designer brands in India could be limited but there are quite a few shopping sites - Fashion and You, Exclusively.in and 99 Labels - that have already made a mark among the brand-conscious and fashion-savvy consumer here.

Amazon, which so far limited itself to shipping books and Kindles in India, has just entered the fashion territory as well. If you are someone who prefers wearing designer labels and don't mind the premium, you can now buy your favorite international brands directly from MyHabit.com and Endless.com – both sites are owned by Amazon.

MyHabit is Amazon’s private shopping site for luxury brands and deals here typically last for 72 hours. Endless, on the other hand, is a regular shopping site, like the main Amazon.com, but purely dedicated to shoes and designer bags. You can sign-in to either of the sites using your existing Amazon account.

MyHabit charges a flat $15 fee for shipping to India while Endless offers free shipping to India if the total value of the order exceeds $100. They use Priority shipping so the delivery should take no more than 3-4 days. Import duties, if any, would have to be paid by you.

Use Yahoo! for 7 Days to Win Free Coffee for a Year

2011-05-30T10:30:00.000-07:00

Yahoo! was the most visited website on the Internet a few years ago but they’ve slipped to the third place courtesy Facebook and Google. Almost everyone has an email account with Yahoo! Mail but many don’t use it as their primary email address anymore.

Thus, in a possible bid to entice old users to check the various properties again, Yahoo! has launched a unique promotion in the U.S. where you may win a year of coffee if you are willing to sign-in to your Yahoo! account for seven consecutive days.

For every 7 consecutive days you sign-in to the Yahoo! homepage, Yahoo! Mail, or Yahoo! Mobile we’ll give you one entry to win a year of premium coffee.

To participate, all you need a valid Yahoo! email address and you should be a U.S. citizen. You can even snail mail your entries to Yahoo as mentioned in the rules book.

The big question is – will an year of free coffee be enough to pull you back to Yahoo?

Online App Turns your Pictures into Text Portraits

2011-05-30T02:45:00.000-07:00

Online App Turns your Pictures into Text Portraits: "

Textify is an impressive web based app that instantly turns a photograph into a beautiful text portrait. Simply drag an image from the desktop onto your browser and watch as the individual pixels of the image are converted into text characters.

The app, though simple, offers you a good deal of control over your text portraits. You can choose to have text from different font families, you can increase the character density to make your ‘text images’ appear more sharp or change the font-weight for getting that water-color like effect.

The best part about the app is that it uses regular HTML to render your image as a text. If you would like to grab this HTML code, disable the “Draw on Canvas” option, apply and then hit “View Source” to get the full underlying HTML that you can copy-paste into your own website.

This kind of art, though computer-generated, will still look good on one of your walls. Here are some other online and offline options for converting your photographs into text. Thank you Maria Popova for the tip.

Mobitel 4G - 96Mbps Download Speed

2011-05-28T08:48:00.000-07:00

Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel announced today(06/05/2011) that it has carried out a successful trial of LTE (Long Term Evolution) Technology achieving speeds of up to 96 Mbps. At this LTE trial Mobitel has broken the speed barrier even further to demonstrate broadband speeds of up to 96Mbps in downlink and 49Mbps in uplink using LTE technology.

The Director General of Telecommunications(TRCSL) Mr.Anusha Palpita witnesses Mobitel demonstrating 4G(LTE) technology exceeding 96Mbps data download speed and 49Mbps in upload speed 1st in south Asia at Mobitel flagship center.

Reason to this speed in LTE

The prime factor behind thise super-fast speeds demonstrated in LTE technology when compared to existing and most advanced 3G technologies is that the spectral efficiency is 4 to 5 times greater in LTE than in the most advanced 3G technologies. The use of OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) carrier modulation in LTE allows easy upward scalability for higher bandwidth requirements, coupled with MIMO technology, which effectively uses multiple antennae in both the Terminal Device (Data dongle, Tablet PC/Smart Phone etc.) and radio network to transmit and receive multiple streams of information within the same spectrum. The demonstration was carried out in the 2.6GHz frequency range, and initiatives are under way to explore operations at other spectrum bands for commercial deployment.

Send your Handwritten Notes to Google Docs with Livescribe

2011-05-25T22:44:00.000-07:00

Wouldn’t it be nice if you could write (or draw) on a piece of paper with a pen and send that handwritten note straight to the cloud – like Google Docs or Evernote – for digital archiving?

One option is that you use scan the paper as a PDF file and upload it to Google Docs but if you need a solution that’s more simple and completely automated, consider getting yourself a Livescribe pen.

Livescribe is an impressive piece of technology – it is like a regular pen with an ink cartridge but unlike any other pen, Livescribe pens record everything that you write on a notebook including the audio that you hear (like when you are in a meeting or a lecture).

Later, you can tap on your notes to replay the recording. You can connect the pen to your computer via a USB cable to transfer all your handwritten notes and the linked voice recordings to the desktop. All your handwritten notes are searchable now or you can transcribe them to digital text using the Livescribe Desktop software.

As an example, see this PDF note that Arianna Huffington wrote using a Livescribe pen.

Send your Paper Notes to Google Docs, Evernote, etc.

Livescribe today announced a new software update that will let you send your handwritten notes from paper to cloud services like Facebook, Google Docs or Evernote with a few taps.

You draw a small double-line on the paper that you want to archive, write the destination name on that line (like “Google Docs”) and the next time you connect your pen to the computer, the note will find its way to the cloud automatically.

A limitation is that the transfer is not wireless and will only happen when you connect the pen to your PC or Mac. Livescribe Pens start at $99 (the basic model has 2 GB storage) but there’s another recurring cost – it only works with a special kind of paper.

3 Extensions for Improved Browsing History Management in Chrome for Search and Sort

2011-05-25T21:28:00.000-07:00

Google Chrome provides a very simple history feature to view past visited websites. It is very easy to use and solves most of the purpose. By default, your past visits are arranged in reverse chronological order with only few sorting options. Often it becomes difficult to search for previous visited sites in history. Chrome history also lacks in some other important features like:

#1. Looking up history for a specific date.

#2. Ability to search websites between the two dates.

#3. Sorting based on URL or date.

#4. Deleting specific parts of history.

We can easily overcome these problems with the use of chrome extensions. However, be advised that since these extensions are custom made they cannot be blindly trusted. Some of them might store sites you visit locally to give you enhanced functionality. A common method to choose extension is to choose one with high number of downloads having positive comments with good rating.

Let us look three such extensions that fulfil the above criteria and are very useful in managing history in better way –

History2 : Same History Page with Added Options

History2 is a very simple to use history viewer with a host of options that lets you view web history with already defined time frames such as 2 days ago or last week and others. You can even sort your search results alphabetically or by last time visit or by number of visits.

History Calendar: Beautifully designed Multipurpose Extension

History Calendar is the best in its league but unfortunately it is not verified by Google. It gives quick information on already visited websites in a beautiful popup but this is just tip of the iceberg. The more evident use of this chrome extension is to view history for a particular date from calendar and to search history between two particular date intervals.

Recent History: A Nifty Web Browsing History Manager

Recent History is a heavily customised smart addon that gives you flexibility to view recent history with just a click of mouse and variety of options to manage better the past visited websites. The options page gives wide range of selections to choose.

The main history manager lets you view history based on the selected day of calendar. Deleting history between dates is hidden and you will have to click on the arrow next to calendar to reveal it. Similarly, the sorting options are not so evident. They can be found at top right most side of the page.

This extension does not not actually use Chrome history but it makes its own database separately. Therefore, it might be sluggish sometimes. However, this is a smart extension for improved browsing history management in Google Chrome.

Russia Won't Ban Gmail or Skype Amid Security Concerns

2011-05-25T19:04:00.000-07:00

It looks like Russia won't be banning Skype or Gmail, after all. The Kremlin was reportedly considering blocking both services, along with Hotmail, in response to a major cyberattack that crippled the country's most popular blog and an independent news site. Some within the Kremlin had believed the services posed a major threat to national security, but some critics had thought the government may have just been looking for an excuse to tighten its control over the Web -- ahead of December's parliamentary elections and next year's presidential race.

BlackBerry Bold 9900, 9930 Will Run BlackBerry OS 7

2011-05-25T19:03:00.000-07:00

RIM kicked off its BlackBerry World event in Orlando, Florida by launching the not-so-secret BlackBerry Bold 9900/9930 models, also dubbed 'Bold Touch.'

While the devices don't noticeably stray from RIM's design choices from the past decade -- they're instantly recognizable as QWERTY keyboard BlackBerrys -- the 9900 and 9300 pack some impressive guts. While the 2.8-inch VGA touchscreens won't impress many in today's world of 4-inch screens, but the devices are RIM's thinnest yet at 10.5mm."

'i3D' Demo App Shows Off Head-Tracking 3D on iOS Devices

2011-05-25T18:52:00.000-07:00

Last month, French researchers Jeremie Francone and Laurence Nigay posted a video showing off a method for using head tracking by a device's camera to simulate three-dimensional scenes for the iPad, a concept in which Apple has expressed some interest.

As noted by MacStories, a new demo app from Francone and Nigay known as i3D has appeared in the App Store, giving users the opportunity to test out the technology on their own devices.

i3D is a free universal app running on the iPad 2, iPhone 4, and fourth-generation iPod touch. It contains a sample video image displaying a bounding box as it tracks the user's head location, as well as five demos showing the simulated 3D perspective that can be generated using the tracking.
