Metagenesix is an exhibition of new architecture from Galicia  with works from Alfredo Sirvent, Ansede Quintans Arquitectos, Arrokabe Arquitectos, Castro Ferro Arquitectos, Estudio ERBA, Estudio Nómada, Marta Somoza from the Municipality of Allariz, Óscar Pedrós, Oxíxeno Arquitectura and U.M.U Estudio. It will open September 30th at the Palácio dos Laguares, Rua Professor Sousa da Câmara 156 in Lisbon. In the day before, Alfredo Sirvent will give a lecture at the Universidade Lusófona in Campo Grande, following by a debate about the relations between galician and portuguese architecture that features EXTRASTUDIO. Just two weeks after visiting the architecture school at Universidade de Évora, we were invited by Professor Teresa Madeira to be guest juries at the final reviews of the 3rd year architecture class at ISCTE, Lisbon.

The students’ projects focused on a huge vacant plot on the interior of a block in Largo do Rato in Lisbon, an area best know by its proximity to political institutions; the Prosecutor General’s Office, the Socialist Party headquarters, renowned architecture legends: Gonçalo Byrne’s office just on the corner of the block and tough cookies Aires Mateus +Valssassina über-polemical housing project just in front.

Transforming the interior of the block into a mixed residential neighbourhood, students created a very interesting set of new visions and typologies for the area, clearly proving an incredible hard-work capacity, perseverance and talent, displayed on countless booklets, panels, drawings and models.

João Costa Ribeiro and João Ferrão visited Universidade de Évora on the past May 24th as guest critics at the Architecture Department. This 3rd year design studio is supervised by  João Rocha, PhD at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, now teaching in Évora. The students’ brief was to design a church and a sanctuary devoted to Alexandrina, a local saint of the village of Balazar, in the north of Portugal. Their models and drawings were very mature, dealing with the issue of religion and spirituality with a contemporary perspective.

Universidade de Évora dates from the 16th century, but the Architecture Department, the most recent school, is installed in an old industrial mill, recently refurbished by Inês Lobo, tuned with the “ethos” of the school.
