Cláudia Melo of Diário de Notícias, as written about Tavira’s Island Regeneration project, in Algarve, on the 1st of August edition of Diário de Notícias, Portugal´s main national newspaper.

The project launched by Sociedade Polis Litoral Ria Formosa in collaboration with ParqueExpo and Tavira’s Municipality, was developed in collaboration with landscape architects Oficina dos Jardins. Construction is scheduled to start on the fall, 2011.

The project includes the infrastructure and landscape re-qualification, the re-refurbishment of all the public buildings on the island, a camping site, a new public plaza and new paths, linking the harbor to the beach.

EXTRASTUDIO is working with sustainability consultants Wee-Solutions in the development of an energy consumption management strategy, waste and water treatment, and in a self-sustained, renewable energy solution

The bar and restaurant in the Polvoeira beach, just North of Lisbon, on the Western shoreline of Portugal, is near completion. A tight and stressful schedule of site meetings started on March and is expect to end on August. Nevertheless, this stretch of sand is the most inspiring construction site we ever experienced. The wideness of the space always surprises us, either if is a misty morning, a sunny afternoon or a smooth dusk. We will never forget that the landscape is always a part of the architecture.

As we previously posted, the Portuguese Architects Association (Ordem dos Arquitectos), joined a group young architects to present their recent achievements abroad. The session was hosted last friday at the MUDE Design Museum by Cristina Veríssimo and commented by Jorge Spencer, curiously both former teachers of ours from the university.

The young and gifted João Prates Ruivo, now working in Athens, presented his winning scheme for the UPTO35 competition. Ivo Henriques and Florencia Grieco, from Barcelona, showed the awarded renovation of their own office. Nuno Valentim amazed the audience with his cirurgical design for a jesuit chapel in Oporto, that won an ENOR award.

EXTRASTUDIO was invited by Detail magazine to a workshop held June 30th and July 1st in London. Among other participating practices were Raiser Lopes from Stuttgart, Dan Pearlman from Berlin, Ramseier and Associates from Zurich, Formstelle from Munich, Atelier LEK from Rotterdam, Riegler Riewe from Graz, Liganova from Stuttgart, and Schmidhuber + Partner from Munich, that designed the German Pavilion at the Expo in Shanghai.

Sandra Hofmeister, a journalist that publishes at DAMn, Frame and Mark magazines, moderated the workshop, hosted at the Wapping project. Philips fueled the debate with new lightning technologies and commercial trends.
