Training Heights Nigeria has expanded its operations into Canada, marking a significant milestone in the company’s growth and its commitment to equipping professionals with globally relevant skills for today’s competitive job market.

The expansion comes with the launch of a specialised Information and Cybersecurity NIST CSF Training and Certification programme designed to help newcomers and aspiring professionals build competencies that align with the needs of Canadian employers. The initiative reflects the increasing demand for cybersecurity, governance, risk and compliance professionals across Canada’s technology and business sectors.

The programme, which runs across four Saturdays in July, is structured to provide participants with practical and industry-focused knowledge in cybersecurity, information security governance, risk management and compliance frameworks. It also offers live instructor-led training, beginner-friendly learning modules, certificate of completion opportunities and one month of live project experience aimed at strengthening participants’ practical readiness for the job market.

According to the programme outline, participants will receive training on cybersecurity and IT governance, risk and compliance foundations, Information Security Management Systems (ISMS), internet security concepts, risk assessment and treatment planning, security controls, governance frameworks and practical implementation workshops. The curriculum also covers globally recognised standards and frameworks including ISO/IEC 27001, NIST Cybersecurity Framework 2.0, CIS Controls Version 8 and CMMC 2.0.

Speaking on the expansion, General Manager of Training Heights, Muyiwa Olubajo, described the move as a strategic step towards empowering professionals with skills that are directly relevant to the realities of the Canadian labour market.

“Canada presents enormous opportunities for skilled professionals, but many newcomers struggle because they do not fully understand the expectations of the market. Our goal is to bridge that gap by providing practical, industry-aligned training that helps participants build confidence, gain relevant knowledge and position themselves competitively,” Olubajo said.

He noted that the programme was deliberately designed to go beyond theoretical learning by exposing participants to practical workshops, governance frameworks and real-world cybersecurity scenarios.

“We are not just offering training; we are creating pathways to career readiness. Participants will gain exposure to globally recognised frameworks and practical implementation processes that employers value. We want them to leave the programme with knowledge they can immediately apply in professional environments,” he stated.

As cybersecurity threats continue to evolve globally, organisations are placing greater emphasis on information security, risk management and regulatory compliance. This has created growing demand for professionals with expertise in governance, risk and compliance functions, particularly those with knowledge of internationally recognised cybersecurity frameworks.

Training Heights said the programme will also focus on career readiness by providing participants with guidance on professional positioning, interview preparation, governance and compliance documentation, and strategies for navigating employment opportunities within Canada’s technology and cybersecurity sectors.

Olubajo said the organisation’s vision extends beyond training delivery and is focused on long-term professional development and workforce empowerment.

“At Training Heights, our mission is to empower professionals to reach new heights. This expansion into Canada represents more than a new location for us; it is an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the success of professionals seeking to build sustainable careers in a highly competitive environment,” he said.

He added that the company intends to continue developing programmes that respond to emerging industry needs while maintaining a strong focus on practical learning, professional growth and global standards.

The Canadian launch represents a new chapter for Training Heights as it seeks to leverage its experience in professional capacity building to support individuals looking to advance their careers in cybersecurity, information security governance, risk management and related fields. Through its latest initiative, the organisation aims to strengthen workforce readiness while helping professionals acquire skills that remain increasingly important in a rapidly evolving digital economy.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on Friday, commissioned new and upgraded health infrastructure across all six geopolitical zones of the country, marking the largest single-day commissioning of federal health investments in Nigeria’s history.

The events form part of the nationwide commissioning programme marking the third anniversary of his administration.

The President inaugurated the newly completed Bola Tinubu Specialist Complex at the Federal Medical Centre, Jabi, Abuja—a two-storey facility purpose-built for integrated specialist and VIP healthcare. It comprises eight consulting rooms, twin theatre suites, dedicated Ophthalmology and Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) departments, a fully equipped laboratory, a pharmacy, nine VIP wards, four general wards, and a Private and VIP Clinic.

At the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare headquarters, the President also flagged off the National Emergency Medical Service and Ambulance System (NEMSAS) Emergency Response Fleet — the largest single-day deployment of emergency medical transport in the country’s history.

The fleet comprises 145 tricycle ambulances, six boat ambulances, and 79 brand-new emergency ambulances for federal tertiary hospitals, along with 45 laptops, 20 printers, and 320 mobile phones to support the digital coordination platform. The fleet will operate under the SAVEMAMA programme to deliver emergency obstetric and newborn care services to underserved communities, including riverine, rural, and hard-to-reach areas.

The President later flagged off a fleet of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered ambulances for all 73 federal tertiary health facilities in the country at a ceremony held along the Lekki-Epe Expressway in Lagos. Delivered under the Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative and empanelled by NEMSAS, the CNG ambulances will significantly lower fuel costs for federal tertiary facilities, reduce emissions and strengthen the referral architecture linking secondary and tertiary hospitals.

In the North-West, three state Polio Emergency Operations Centres (PEOCs) — in Katsina, Kano and Sokoto — were commissioned. Originally established in 2013 with support from the Gates Foundation and managed since inception by eHealth Africa, the three Centres have been expanded, renovated and re-equipped to strengthen each state’s coordination of immunisation, disease surveillance and outbreak response. The Kano PEOC is housed at the Muhammad Abdullahi Wase Specialist Hospital, Nassarawa, the Katsina PEOC at the SPHCDA premises, Murtala Muhammed Way, and the Sokoto PEOC at the Epidemiology Unit of the Specialist Hospital, Sultan Abubakar Road.

Also in Kano, the President commissioned the newly constructed Gadon Kaya Primary Health Centre in the Gwale Local Government Area. The facility was built under the Immunisation Plus and Malaria Progress by Accelerating Coverage and Transforming Services (IMPACT) Project. This World Bank-supported intervention has revitalised nearly 3,000 primary health centres across the country over the last two years. In the South-South, the Aboh Primary Health Centre in the Ndokwa East Local Government Area of Delta State was also commissioned under the same IMPACT programme.

The President further commissioned three tertiary hospital projects: the new two-storey Laboratory Complex at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital, Akwa Ibom State — housing 16 dedicated laboratories, seminar rooms, a library, call rooms and staff offices; the new Administrative Complex at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Ituku-Ozalla, Enugu State — inaugurated through a hybrid virtual ceremony; and the new Pharmacy Quality Control Laboratory at the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Shika, Zaria, Kaduna State — which provides regulatory-grade quality assurance for every medicine entering the hospital, operating through Microbiology, Chemistry and Instrumentation units in full compliance with British Pharmacopoeia and United States.

My fellow compatriots,

Three years ago, you entrusted me with the sacred responsibility of leading our beloved nation at a defining moment in our history. I accepted that responsibility, fully aware of the magnitude of the challenges before us, but also deeply confident in the resilience and potential of the Nigerian people.

Today, on the occasion of the third anniversary of our administration, I speak to you not only as your President but also as a fellow citizen who understands the sacrifices many families have made in recent years and shares your hopes for a better Nigeria.

When this administration assumed office, our nation faced profound economic and structural difficulties. Mounting fiscal pressures, unsustainable fuel subsidies, declining revenues, exchange-rate distortions, rising debt-servicing costs, insecurity in several parts of the country, energy supply constraints, and declining public confidence in institutions all threatened our progress.

At the height of the subsidy regime, Nigeria was spending as much as ₦18.4 billion daily to sustain petrol subsidies—over ₦4 trillion in 2022 alone—resources that could have been invested in roads, healthcare, education, housing, and critical infrastructure. Multiple exchange rate windows and forex arbitrage created massive distortions, with Nigeria losing more than ₦8 trillion over three years to rent-seeking and speculative practices.

The situation demanded urgent and courageous action. Difficult but necessary decisions had to be taken to stabilise the economy and prevent a deeper national crisis. The easy choices would have been politically convenient. But leadership demands courage, especially when the right decisions are difficult.

Had we refused to act, our nation would have drifted toward fiscal breakdown, worsening poverty, and severe economic uncertainty. Together, we chose reform over ruin and decisiveness over hesitation. We chose long-term national recovery over short-term comfort.

These decisions came with sacrifice. The rising cost of living triggered by our measures placed enormous pressure on families, workers, and businesses. Young people searching for jobs felt discouraged. Many questioned whether these difficult decisions would lead to a better future.

I remain deeply conscious of those sacrifices, and I assure you: your sacrifice has not been in vain. And today, I can say with confidence that Nigeria has stabilised and is moving forward again. Across the country, visible progress is taking shape.

VISIBLE PROGRESS AND ECONOMIC GROWTH

Our economy is now more competitive and better positioned for sustainable growth than it was in 2023. Public finances are improving. States and local governments have greater resources to invest in their people. Investor confidence is growing. The stock market is booming, with the All Share Index rising from 53,000 and market capitalisation of N30 Trillion in 2023 to a record All Share Index of 250,000 and market capitalisation of N160 Trillion this year. Companies are declaring record profits and dividends.

Critical infrastructure projects are advancing at an unprecedented scale. Over 2,700 kilometres of highways and major roads are under construction, reconstruction, or rehabilitation, including the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, the Sokoto-Badagry Super Highway, the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano Road, the East-West Road, and many rural access roads. Significant sections are already completed or nearing completion, improving transportation, reducing travel time, boosting regional trade, and creating thousands of jobs.

Rail modernisation projects are ongoing to improve connectivity, logistics, and economic integration across the federation.

In the oil and gas sector, the reforms we instituted have attracted billions of dollars in fresh investment from the international oil companies that had shunned our country. The $5 billion NLNG Train 7 project is nearing completion to boost LNG production capacity, exports, and dividends.

Domestic gas utilisation is expanding. Local refining capacity has improved our energy security. With large-scale domestic and modular refineries operational, Nigeria is reducing its dependence on imported petroleum products and conserving foreign exchange.

For years, the power sector suffered from debt, underinvestment, and uncertainty, which weakened generation capacity and limited growth. Today, we are confronting those challenges directly.

Our administration is clearing legacy obligations, expanding transmission infrastructure, investing in renewable energy, and strengthening the national grid because no modern economy can grow in darkness. When power improves, businesses expand, industries grow, jobs are created, and families prosper.

We are determined to power Nigeria into a new era of industrial growth and economic opportunity.

EMPOWERING NIGERIANS: AGRICULTURE, EDUCATION, AND HOUSING

Agricultural interventions have supported millions of farmers by improving seedlings, fertilisers, mechanisation, and irrigation and by expanding access to finance and markets. We are opening new agricultural corridors to create jobs, strengthen supply chains, and reduce pressure on household incomes.

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund has provided over 1.5 million students with access to higher education, disbursing more than ₦282 billion to ensure that no willing student is denied access due to financial hardship.

Our Renewed Hope Housing Programme, along with that of the Federal Housing Authority (FHA), is delivering over 10,000 housing units across 14 states and the FCT, creating over 300,000 jobs and expanding access to affordable housing. Major Renewed Hope Cities in Abuja, Lagos, and Kano are progressing steadily. Our consumer credit initiative, CREDICORP, is opening up new economic opportunities for workers and families.

In healthcare, thousands of primary healthcare centres are being revitalised, while health insurance coverage is expanding for vulnerable Nigerians.

DEEPENING TELECOMS ACCESS AND INVESTMENT

We also took decisive action to stabilise the telecommunications sector, which remains one of the most important drivers of modern economic growth.

After years of severe operational pressures and declining investment, confidence is gradually returning to the sector. Telecom operators are expanding networks, investing in infrastructure, recruiting Nigerian talent, and widening digital access across the country.

A connected Nigeria is a more competitive Nigeria. Digital infrastructure is now essential to commerce, education, innovation, and national productivity.

YOUTH, TECHNOLOGY AND DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION

To our young people, I want you to know this nation believes in you. You are not a problem to be managed. You are the engine of Nigeria’s future. Across technology, manufacturing, creative industries, agriculture, sports, and entrepreneurship, we are expanding opportunities for you to compete and succeed. We are investing in digital skills, technical education, innovation, student financing, and enterprise support because the future must be driven by Nigerian talent, creativity, and productivity.

SECURITY AND NATIONAL UNITY

Security remains central to our national mission and to the creation of a virile and prosperous society. Our Armed Forces and security agencies have intensified operations against terrorists, bandits, kidnappers, oil thieves, and criminal networks. While challenges remain, many communities and highways are becoming safer and more economically active. We continue investing in intelligence, surveillance, logistics, technology, and inter-agency coordination. We are improving the capabilities of our armed forces and security agencies, and reclaiming the authority of the Nigerian state wherever criminality threatens peace and order. While we continue to confront the challenges head-on, progress is being made. I want to assure you that this government will not relent until every Nigerian can live, work, travel, and dream in safety.

My fellow Nigerians,

A nation develops when its people can see and touch progress. From highways under construction to rail modernisation and expanded energy investments, our goal remains clear: to build a Nigeria that works for Nigerians.

We have not solved every problem, and we are not yet where we want to be. But the foundation for recovery has been laid. The task before us now is clear: we must ensure that the benefits of reform are felt more directly in the daily lives of ordinary Nigerians.

We shall achieve this task by continuing to ensure that food prices, which have largely come down from their peak in 2023/2024, remain low.

We are also working to reduce transportation costs as operators of commercial trucks, buses, and taxis convert their petrol engines to CNG and switch to electric vehicles. We have also set our sights on creating more opportunities for decent work and enabling enterprise expansion.

A CALL TO NATIONAL PURPOSE

The journey of national renewal is not completed in a single year or a single administration’s tenure. Nations rise when their people remain united in purpose, disciplined in effort, and hopeful about the future.

We must choose hope over despair, unity over division, and nation-building over narrow interests.

But true security and prosperity require that every Nigerian feel included and valued. Nigeria belongs to all of us—no region, faith, or group should feel marginalised or forgotten. Our diversity is a source of strength. Whether Christian or Muslim, North or South, urban or rural, we rise or fall together as one nation under God.

To our youth, workers, entrepreneurs, farmers, professionals, security personnel, students, and diaspora: your sacrifices sustain our nation, and they will not be in vain. To the international community and investors: Nigeria remains committed to democratic stability, economic reform, responsible governance, and mutually beneficial partnerships.

My fellow Nigerians,

History teaches us that great nations are not built in comfort. They are built through sacrifice, resilience, courage, and collective purpose.

Ours is a nation of extraordinary people. We survived civil war and rebuilt.

We overcame dictatorship and restored democracy. We endured hardship and remain bearers of hope. The Nigerian spirit remains strong and unbroken.

Today, the world is watching our country again, not as a nation defined by its difficulties, but as a nation determined to rise. Across agriculture, infrastructure, power, technology, manufacturing, and industry, the signs of recovery are becoming clearer. Confidence is returning. Productivity is improving. Opportunity is expanding.

LOOKING FORWARD

The work ahead is enormous, but I remain optimistic because I believe deeply in this country and in you, the Nigerian people.

I ask you to keep faith with Nigeria. Let us reject cynicism and division. Let us move forward together, united in purpose, disciplined in effort, compassionate toward one another, and confident in the greatness that lies ahead.

My fellow Nigerians, history tests nations before it elevates them. Nigeria is passing through such a test. But I believe with all my heart that we shall emerge stronger, fairer, more united, and more prosperous than ever before.

Let us continue this journey together. Let us build a Nigeria that is secure, prosperous, inclusive, and respected worldwide. Let us continue to believe in the promise of our nation.

May God bless you all.

May God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The Presidency has called for legal action against social media personality Martins Vincent Otse, widely known as VDM, following the circulation of an alleged fake audio recording linked to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Presidential spokesperson and Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, condemned the spread of the recording on social media, describing it as a dangerous misuse of digital platforms.

Reacting through a post on X, Onanuga insisted that the influencer should be held accountable for allegedly sharing misleading content connected to the President.

According to him, “VDM must face the full weight of the law for distributing a fake audio of President Tinubu. This is a serious abuse of social media.”

The controversy began after an audio clip surfaced online, with claims that the voice belonged to President Tinubu. However, several social media users have questioned the authenticity of the recording.

One X user, identified as Aneex, dismissed the clip as fabricated propaganda and accused VDM of taking advantage of public emotions to spread unverified information.

The incident has since triggered heated reactions online, with many Nigerians debating the credibility of the audio and raising concerns about the increasing spread of false information across social media platforms.

Blessing Fubara, younger brother of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, has officially declared his intention to run for governor under the platform of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC).

Speaking ahead of the party’s governorship primary, Blessing Fubara described himself as a capable and energetic leader prepared to restore peace, economic growth, and stability in Rivers State.

He lamented the political and economic challenges facing the state, saying Rivers people had lost major opportunities, investments, and their sense of pride in recent years. According to him, the state is currently in a difficult condition that requires urgent rebuilding and unity among all political and ethnic groups.

Fubara stressed that Rivers people should not allow themselves to be treated as a conquered people, insisting that the state deserves better leadership and governance.

The governorship aspirant also reaffirmed his commitment to preserving the state’s zoning arrangement. He maintained that the Rivers South-East Senatorial District should be allowed to complete its constitutionally accepted eight-year leadership tenure.

In a major promise to voters, Blessing Fubara pledged to serve only one four-year term if elected governor, saying his mission is to deliver prosperity, development, and lasting peace within that period.

He further argued that elections should not be determined by financial strength alone, claiming that popular support remains his greatest advantage. He urged supporters across the 23 local government areas of the state to mobilise massively for the NDC during the upcoming primary election.

Fubara also appealed to another aspirant in the race, whom he referred to as his “elder brother,” to step down in support of what he described as a people-driven movement aimed at protecting the state’s political balance and stability.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has emerged winner of the presidential primary election of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, ahead of the 2027 general election.

Official results announced by the party’s electoral committee show that Atiku Abubakar polled a total of 1,846,370 votes to defeat his closest challengers in a contest that has already sparked controversy within the party.

Former Minister and businessman, Hayatu-deen secured 177,120 votes, while former Rivers State Governor who also served as fMinister of Transportation in formwr president Buhari’s administration, Rotimi Amaechi polled 504,117 votes.

According to figures released by the party, the ADC has a total registered membership of 3,113,599, while total votes cast in the exercise stood at 2,527,977.

The outcome of the primary, however, has deepened tensions within the opposition party, as both Rotimi Amaechi and Hayatu-deen had earlier rejected the process, alleging widespread electoral irregularities and violations during the conduct of the exercise.

The aggrieved aspirants accused the party leadership of failing to guarantee a level playing field, raising concerns over transparency, vote collation procedures, and internal democratic standards.

Despite the protests, party officials insist the exercise was credible and reflected the will of ADC members across the country.

Atiku Abubakar’s emergence is expected to reshape opposition politics ahead of 2027, especially as conversations intensify over coalition building, realignments, and efforts by opposition figures to challenge the ruling APC in the next presidential election.

The crisis rocking the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has taking a more interesting turn as a faction of the party on Sunday picked Dumebi Kachikwu as its presidential candidate.

The faction, led by its newly elected National Chairman, Alhaji Abdulkadir Mohammed Bashir, picked Kachikwu as its candidate during a special National Convention in Abuja.

The gathering came barely hours ahead of the Senator David Mark-led ADC presidential primary election on Monday. Although the party is still grappling with a leadership tussle in court, the Mark-led ADC is recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

However, in his acceptance speech, Kachikwu pledged to lead an issue-based campaign focused on national unity, economic recovery, and inclusive governance ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Kachikwu said Nigeria was at a critical stage and needed courageous leadership to tackle insecurity, economic hardship, unemployment, and social division.

He thanked party leaders, delegates, and supporters for the confidence reposed in him, describing his emergence as a call to service and national sacrifice.

“For too long, politics has benefited only a few while the majority of Nigerians continue to suffer. That must change,” he stated.

Kachikwu said the ADC remained committed to rebuilding public trust and restoring hope through policies driven by merit, competence, and patriotism rather than ethnicity or political favouritism.

He stressed that elections should be contests of ideas and practical solutions, not campaigns built on division, identity politics, or empty promises.

Kachikwu challenged political actors to clearly present their economic blueprints, including plans for production, job creation, industrial growth, and sustainable development.

He also advocated greater inclusion of women and young people in governance, noting that no modern society could develop while excluding key segments of its population from decision-making.

He maintained that public officials must rely on the same healthcare, education, and social services used by ordinary citizens to promote accountability and improve service delivery.

The newly elected National Chairman, Alhaji Abdulkadir Mohammed Bashir, also called for unity and strict adherence to the party’s constitution and Nigeria’s laws amid the party’s internal crisis.

Bashir said the crisis stemmed from attempts by some individuals to dominate leadership contrary to democratic principles, stressing that no individual is bigger than the party.

He praised Kachikwu’s conduct during the crisis, saying the candidate had refused to escalate tensions and had shown honesty and intellectual capacity.

Bashir pledged to reposition the ADC into a stronger political platform and urged aggrieved members to return, noting that the party remained committed to providing strong opposition.

He concluded that the ADC belonged to millions of Nigerians seeking justice, fairness, opportunity, and good governance, and that the movement was bigger than any individual.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has said he was not surprised by the decision of Siminalayi Fubara to withdraw from the APC governorship primary in Rivers State.

Fubara had pulled out of the race a day before the primary election, explaining that his decision was made in the interest of peace, unity, and stability in the state.

Following the primary held on May 21, Kingsley Chinda, who is considered an ally of Wike, emerged as the APC governorship candidate.

Speaking during the inspection of ongoing projects in Abuja on Monday, Wike praised Chinda’s experience in both legislative and executive roles, saying he possesses the capacity to govern Rivers State effectively.

Reacting to Fubara’s withdrawal, Wike stated that the governor was never expected to contest in the first place because an agreement had already been reached. According to him, the understanding was that impeachment efforts against Fubara would be halted, while the governor would not pursue a second-term ambition.

The political crisis between Wike and Fubara has lingered for months, with tensions escalating to impeachment attempts led by lawmakers loyal to the former Rivers governor.

Wike had previously declared that he would oppose Fubara’s re-election bid, accusing the governor of breaching the peace deal brokered by President Bola Tinubu.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has placed the country on heightened alert over the risk of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) entering Nigeria amid rising infections in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Uganda.

In an emergency preparedness update released over the weekend, NCDC Director-General, Dr. Jide Idris, said no confirmed Ebola case linked to the regional outbreak had been detected in Nigeria. However, he noted that nationwide preventive measures had already been activated to guard against a possible outbreak.

The agency explained that increasing cases in the DRC and Uganda, alongside growing international travel and cross-border movement, had heightened Nigeria’s vulnerability. According to the NCDC, delayed identification of symptoms often mistaken for illnesses such as Lassa fever or malaria also increases the country’s risk exposure.

To strengthen preparedness, the agency said the National Emergency Operations Centre had been placed on alert, while the National Incident Management System was activated to coordinate a rapid national response if needed. Surveillance activities have also been intensified at airports, border communities, transport hubs and health facilities to improve early detection of suspected infections.

Rapid Response Teams and epidemiologists across the country have reportedly been placed on standby for immediate deployment, while hospitals have received infection prevention tools and refresher training on Ebola case identification, triage and safety procedures.

The NCDC further stated that states had been instructed to designate isolation and treatment facilities, review emergency bed capacity, strengthen ambulance and referral systems, and ensure adequate medical supplies. Laboratories across the country, especially those near international entry points, have also been placed on alert for rapid testing.

As part of public awareness efforts, the agency said it had launched campaigns to counter misinformation and educate Nigerians on Ebola prevention, urging citizens to maintain hand hygiene, avoid contact with body fluids of sick persons and report unusual illnesses promptly.

The agency reassured Nigerians that Ebola is not airborne and stressed that no confirmed case has been recorded in the country.

Meanwhile, the Lagos State Government said it had heightened disease surveillance following reports of over 177 deaths linked to nearly 700 suspected Ebola cases in parts of Central and East Africa.

Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Akin Abayomi, stated that no Ebola case had been detected in the state, adding that authorities had activated an emergency response framework strengthened after the country’s 2014 Ebola experience.

He disclosed that surveillance teams, emergency response systems and laboratory facilities remained on standby, while health screening had been intensified for flights arriving from affected regions, alongside stronger monitoring at seaports and land borders.

Residents experiencing symptoms after contact with travellers from affected areas were advised to seek immediate medical attention and contact emergency health lines.

The Lagos State Government has revealed that no fewer than 10,634 people were arrested within the past year for various environmental offences as authorities intensified efforts to improve sanitation and maintain order across the state.

The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, made the disclosure during the 2026 Ministerial Press Briefing held at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre in Alausa, according to a statement issued by the ministry’s Director of Public Affairs, Kunle Adeshina.

Wahab explained that 5,715 individuals were arrested for crossing highways illegally, while 3,886 others were apprehended for offences such as street trading, environmental pollution, and cart pushing. He added that 102 persons were arrested for open defecation, while 931 offenders were prosecuted for waste management violations.

According to the commissioner, the enforcement campaign forms part of the government’s drive to create a cleaner, healthier, and flood-resilient Lagos in line with the THEMES Plus Agenda of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

He noted that enforcement agencies also removed illegal traders and squatters from different parts of the state while issuing environmental abatement notices to offenders.

Wahab further highlighted achievements in waste management and sustainability, stating that the government signed 12 new partnerships to strengthen environmental sustainability and boost its waste-to-wealth programme.

He also disclosed that the Ikosi Waste-to-Energy Biodigester Plant at the Ketu Fruit Market had been commissioned to convert organic waste into electricity, cooking gas, and fertiliser. According to him, the facility processes 0.5 tonnes of organic waste daily, generating 30kWh of electricity and reducing carbon emissions significantly.

The commissioner added that Lagos continued enforcing its ban on Styrofoam and single-use plastics, noting that over 137,530kg of PET plastics had been recovered through recycling initiatives.

On climate action, Wahab said Lagos retained its ranking as Nigeria’s leading state in climate governance for the second consecutive year and successfully hosted the 2025 Lagos International Climate Change Summit focused on coastal resilience and blue economy opportunities.

He also revealed that more than 100 air quality monitoring sensors had been installed across the state, while cleaner fish-smoking technology was introduced in Makoko to reduce harmful smoke emissions.

Speaking on flood control efforts, the commissioner stated that the ministry cleaned and maintained 76 kilometres of primary drainage channels and 178 kilometres of secondary channels, alongside emergency flood control operations in vulnerable communities.

Wahab said the progress recorded in sanitation, climate action, drainage maintenance, and waste management reflects the commitment of the Sanwo-Olu administration to improving the living conditions of Lagos residents.
