StartupRiot was a blast this year and with 50 participants giving presentations there was never a dull moment. The keynotes by Andrew Warner of Mixergy and David Hauser of Grasshopper Group were enlightening and entertaining. We were also graced by a video from Ask a Ninja. Both keynotes had some inspiring words for startups and entrepreneurs. My main takeaway was that don’t always try to chase the common channels that everyone talks about whether it be for funding or for marketing. Andrew told stories of the struggles to pool enough money to get servers and keep the site up using other ways then chasing investment money, and David talked about how press releases and social networking are not always the best ways to communicate your message or talk to your customers.

Sanjay put on a spectacular event attended by a lot of people from the local SouthEast/Atlanta tech community. I didn’t realize how connected we all were until we were all in a big room together! Sometimes the Atlanta startup scene can be a little lonely and frustrating. There are pockets of bright spots in between the long hours of working on a project that you hope breaks through and this was definitely one of them.

We were very fortunate to attend as observers and enjoy the site of the Tabernacle being filled with like minded techies (I believe “dorks” is the common parlance). The event was written up by CNN Tech so I won’t bore you with particulars, but what I will do is bore you with how we’re connected to the participants. We’re happy to say in the past we’ve been involved with Pretty in My Pocket‘s Caroline Van Sickle and Nexpense‘s Jen Bonnett. Unfortunately, Sonali Parikh was no longer involved with TripLingo by the time they made it to StartupRiot but she is a good friend and was involved in getting them going at StartAtlanta. Jason Ardell, who led StartAtlanta, is also someone we’ve worked with and the fact that the #1 spot was taken by a company started 2 weeks ago at his event is outstanding.

Can’t wait for next year!

There are 3 common methods for obtaining a UDID for an iPhone/iPod/iPad:

1. Use iTunes:

Connect your device to a computer and open up iTunes.

Select your device in iTunes in the left panel under Devices.

In the first section there is an attribute named Serial Number right underneath the Software Version attribute. Click on it. The Serial Number will change to Identifier (UDID).

Using your keyboard, type in the keyboard shortcut for Copy (on a Mac: -C ; on a PC: Control-C). You don’t need to highlight anything. Now open a text file or email and type in the keyboard shortcut for Paste (on a Mac: -V ; on a PC: Control-V).

2. UDID Tool:

On your device, open the App Store app.

Search for UDID Tool and install it.

Open the app and the rest is self explanatory.

3. Xcode:

If you have Xcode installed, connect your device to your computer and open up Xcode.

If the Organizer is not already up, select the Window in the top menu bar and click on Organizer.

You should see your device listed in the left hand panel. Select your device and simply highlight and copy the Identifier attribute in the top section. Paste the ID into a text file or email.

Here is a list of tools that I find incredibly helpful for wireframing, mocking up and designing mobile apps:

1. Balsamiq – This is for simple wireframing. It’s a great product for people in the beginning stages of an app’s life cycle. Easy to use and great for non-technical users, also.

2. OmniGraffle – A step beyond Balsamiq. It’s midway between a full fledged Photoshop design and the simplicity of Balsamiq. There are many different stencil kits for designing iPhone and iPad. There are also more generic stencils for mobile design. For people familiar with tools like Visio, this is a great tool.

3. iPhone & iPad Photoshop templates – This is a link to a fantastic iPhone template for Photoshop. I highly recommend it for the final stages of designing your application. It provides all the tools you would need to create what will be cutup and used for the development stage.

4. Android Photoshop template – Here’s an Android Photoshop pack inspired by the group that created the iPhone pack above.

Update:

5. Paper! You can write on napkins or you can use these handy print designs:
Wireframe iPhone templates – http://www.interactivelogic.net/downloads/iphone-wireframe-template.pdf
Wireframe iPhone paper templates w/ notes – http://www.interactivelogic.net/downloads/iphone-wireframe-template-with-notes.pdf

6. Keynotopia – If you’re familiar with presentation programs like Keynote, PowerPoint, or OpenOffice, then you can purchase bundles for them at Keynotopia and create mockups in no time. You can even create working prototypes that can be put on actual devices using this tool. Great for designing flow and general UI.

One of the biggest advantages we’ve gained is by incorporating base.js. It’s been a major part of all of our mobile solutions.

For many of the windows we create a controller class and invoke the constructor. The controller delegates view creation and the constructor usually handles initialization of global events. So for this example, we’ll have a home window that shows a table of names. This will be opened by the app.js calls to open tabs. If you need more information on how app.js works see Appcelerator’s guide on contents and structure of a Titanium Mobile application

/*
* Download base.js and place it in a Resources/js/ folder
* Place the following code in a Resources/windows/my_window.js file
*/
Ti.include('../js/base.js');
var win = Ti.UI.currentWindow;

var MyControllerClass = Base.extend({
  names: ['A' 'B', 'C'],
  constructor:function() {
    // Add the tableview to the current window
    win.add(this.createTableView);
  },
  createTableView:function() {
    var self = this;
    var rows = [];
    for (var i=0;i < this.names.length;i++) {
      // Push the rows into the rows array
      rows.push(Ti.UI.createTableViewRow({
        title: self.names[i];
      }));
    }
    var tableview = Ti.UI.createTableView({
      data: rows
    });
    return tableview;
  }
});

var myController = new MyControllerClass();
