The Pure in Heart is excerpted from Thomas Watson’s classic work, The Beatitudes, written in 1660. In the experiential style of the Puritans, he examines in part one the nature, reasons and motives for, signs of, and how to attain heart-purity. Then in part two he wonderfully describes the blessings of the pure in heart: what it shall be like to see God! Thomas Watson was born approximately 1620, and died in 1686. Educated at Cambridge, he served as lecturer and then rector at St. Stephens in the Church of England. He was imprisoned in 1651 and ejected in 1662 for non-conformity to the Church’s erroneous practices. He continued to serve God’s people in several congregations thereafter. Watson became a well-respected Puritan preacher in his day, and a prolific author. His works include A Body of Divinity, The Lord’s Prayer, The Ten Commandments, Heaven Taken by Storm, and numerous others.

Charles Bridges (1794-1869) was one of the leaders of the evangelical movement in the Church of England in the mid-1800s. He was Vicar of Old Newton, Suffolk, from 1823 to 1849, and later of Weymouth and Hinton Martell in Dorset. Bridges is known for both literary work such as The Christian Ministry and his expositions, which include Ecclesiastes and Psalm 119 as well as Proverbs.

In the calendar of the Christian year, Easter always comes a few months after Christmas. We are told that the earliest possible date for Easter is March 22 and the latest is April 25. That means Lent (the six and a half weeks of spiritual preparation leading to Good Friday and Easter) could begin as early as February 4 or as late as March 10.

Some years Lent starts in the dead of winter.
Other years it begins closer to springtime.

It is good that Christmas and Easter are not far apart because we cannot understand one without the other. If Christmas tells us why Jesus came, then Easter tells us he fully accomplished his mission.

In between those two events we have the whole life of Christ. That’s our focus as we walk “In His Steps.” Between now and Easter we will cover many of the places Jesus visited while he was on the earth. I hope in taking this journey together, we will come to know Christ better and to love him more.

The forty-seven devotionals take us from Ash Wednesday all the way to Easter. Since the dates of Lent change each year, we have numbered the days so this devotional will fit during any Lenten season.

No one who met our Lord ever stayed the same. The same is true today. May these Lenten devotionals help us all to say, “Lord Jesus, I am ready to follow you!”
