Birthdays are always exciting occasions, especially when you’re young and birthdays equated to presents. That’s why I always felt bad for those people whose birthdays fell on a holiday, such as Halloween. It just feels like you have to share the special day with another “person”. Luckily, I was not born on a holiday, but I do know a few people who were born on October 31st. If you know someone born on the scariest day of the year, help them celebrate their birthday, along with Halloween, with these unique group gift ideas.

The Deni Ice-Cream Maker

It's summer time, and what better way to spend a hot, lazy summer day than to make ice-cream in the office? If you keep up with eDivvy's blog, you will know that I reviewed the Cuisinart ice-cream maker earlier this month. Well, today, I decided to give the Deni ice-cream maker a try. Here are my observations:

Looks: The DICM (Deni ice-cream maker) is aesthetically cheaper looking than the CICM (Cuisinart ice-cream maker). The base of the DICM is made out of plastic whereas the base of the CICM is made out of stainless steel. For a price difference of $20, you decided if aesthetics is important.
Recipe book: The directions that came with the DICM is vague. "Put the mixture in the bowl and let churn for 5-30 mins." As a beginner chef, I like to know the exact time that I need to churn my ice-cream so that it will turn out edible. I prefer the recipes that came with the CICM because most of the ice-cream recipes are made without eggs.
Size: The DICM is 1/2 a quart smaller. I like the CICM's 2 quart bowl because then I can make more ice-cream per batch, which is good for a party, or a staff meeting.
Color choices: The DICM comes in blue, pink, white, silver, and green. The CICM comes in stainless steel.
Noise: The DICM makes a quiet running motor sound, whereas the CICM sounds like a jackhammer in comparison.
Extra features: The DICM has a lid that you can use to cover the bowl area as the ice-cream churns so that no particles can fall in. Another feature of the DICM is that it has an interchangeable candy-crusher top. I didn't bother using that though because you have to freeze the candy first before you can put it in the candy-crusher. I think I'll just use my rolling pin to smash the candy into pieces....good way to let out aggression too!

Overall, I liked the two ice-cream makers equally well. They both have their pros and cons. I guess I'll just have to do "eeny, meeny, miny, moe" to see which one I will keep.

You Scream, I Scream, We All Scream for Ice-Cream!!

I'm no Martha Stewart, Rachel Ray, or even a Sandra Lee, but I do like to "cook". With the summer season upon us, I decided to buy an ice-cream maker and test out my home-cooking skills. I ended up buying the Cuisinart 2-qt. Ice-Cream, Frozen Yogurt & Sorbet Maker from Costco (don't you just love their return policy?)

What the ice-cream maker came with: base, freezer bowl, mixing arm, lid, and recipe book.

For my first attempt, I just stuck to the simplest recipe: vanilla ice-cream. All you need is milk, heavy cream, sugar, and vanilla extract.

After I mixed the ingredients together, I turned the machine on, poured in the mixture, and just stood there and watched the machine do its magic for 25 minutes.

After about 20 minutes in the machine, the slush started to resemble ice-cream!

For my second attempt, I added crushed Oreo cookies to the ice-cream mixture about 5 minutes before the ice-cream was done.

Yummy Oreo ice-cream! It was a bit soft, but still delicious!

If you like firmer ice-cream, put the ice-cream in a freezer container after you take it out of the machine, and it'll look like this. Doesn't it look store bought?

Below, you will find my list of pros and cons. Keep in mind that this is all from the point-of-view of someone who spends about an hour a week in the kitchen "cooking", and spaghetti is considered a "gourmet meal".

Pros:
- Very few parts: Machines are supposed to simplify our lives, so the fewer parts, the better.
- Easy maintenance: few parts mean fewer things to wash!
- Homemade ice-cream without too much work.
- Effortless to use: just turn the knob to ON or OFF!
- Stainless steel design makes this machine look sleek!
- The plastic lid is open on the top, so you can watch as the liquid ingredients turn into creamy ice-cream. Great for curious kids!
- No need for ice or rock salt, like some of the other ice-cream makers.
- The machine came with yummy and easy-to-follow recipes.
- Hidden cord storage: the electrical cord hides underneath the base, for easier storage.
- Healthier than buying from the grocery store: after learning what ingredients and how much of each ingredient goes into making ice-cream, I will be eating less. See, the ice-cream maker is actually a diet machine!

Cons:
- Not for immediate use: the package says in 25 minutes, you can have 2 quarts of ice-cream. Well, that does not take into account the 6-22 hours it takes to freeze the freezer bowl.
- The machine is a little big and chunky: more modern technology to take up counter/cabinet space.
- No freezer space for the 2 quart freezer bowl: I've got frozen pizzas, nuggets, chicken, etc in my freezer. Where am I going to find space to store a 2 quart bowl? Luckily, the eDivvy office has a nice, big freezer.
- The mixing arm does not move; it's the freezer bowl that actually rotates. Because of this, mixing is not thorough. Ice-cream on the side and bottom turns out better than on top and in the center.
- Noisy: It's not like a revving car engine loud, but it could be an irritating sound after awhile. Definitely not for use when the kids are asleep.
- The ice-cream did not come out firm enough: it was more soft-serve/milkshake consistency than ice-cream. But if you put it in the freezer for at least 2 hours, your homemade creation will resemble ice-cream.
- A cool feature to add would be a timer on the ice-cream maker: I know you can use the microwave timer or a kitchen timer, but it would make the machine even more functional if the timer was already built in to the ice-cream maker.

Bottom line: if you have extra money to spend on an ice-cream maker, then it's worth the money. It costs the same to make your own ice-cream as buying pre-made ice-cream from the grocery store, but making your own ice-cream is a lot more fun and healthier!

* In most of the countries around the world, like USA, UK, India, Canada, China, France, Greece, Japan, and even Hong Kong, Father's Day is celebrated on the third Sunday of June.

Every year when Father's Day comes around, my mom has an anecdote that she loves to repeat, especially to me. Apparently, as a five or six year old, I used to go rummaging through my dad's sock drawer or closet every time Father's Day rolled around. I would search around and finally grab a pair of old, black socks, an ancient tie, or even clean, but previously worn underwear from the drawer. I would then happily grab the article of clothing, roll it into a tight ball, and ask for wrapping paper. Later that night when my dad returned home from work, I would impatiently present my Father's Day gift to my dad. My dad would then gush and say how thrilled he is with his "new"article of clothing. At this point of the story, my dad would then chime in and say how his favorite part was always the excited expression on my face when I was about to present the gift to him. Some people dread their birthdays, but not me. After all, age is only a number and it has nothing to do with how you feel internally. Sure, your back might start hurting if the bed is too soft, or there might be a few wrinkles around your eyes, but those are physical transformations that no one but Father Time can change. Whereas I look at turning 30 as a reason to celebrate in a grand fashion, my husband isn’t nearly as excited about his June 6th birthday as I am for him.

For those of you with someone in your life celebrating a milestone birthday, here are some birthday gift and celebration ideas I came across as I was doing research for Brian’s 30th birthday.

* This gift is actually something my husband said he wanted. A universal remote control, specifically, the Logitech Harmony One. I think I would shell out the money for it because, like millions of households across the U.S . nowadays, I have to use multiple controllers just to watch TV. Gone are the good old days when you push power on the TV remote and you can watch TV. Now you have to turn on the satellite, the speakers, and the DVD player if you want to watch a movie. Whew, and heaven forbid you should be missing a controller! This little remote can simplify the act of watching TV again. Plus, it looks cool and it’s got a touchscreen! If a piece of technology looks pretty and is useful, I’m all for it.

* Go on a cruise! This is great for someone like my husband who doesn’t want a big hoopla for his birthday, yet still want to celebrate it in a big way. It will be tough to decide between a quick getaway to Mexico , or a longer vacation to Alaska, but whatever itinerary you go on, be prepared for unlimited food at all hours of the day. What better way to spend your birthday than on a giant floating ship with unlimited quality food, a casino, pre-planned excursions and activities, all the while, being just yards from your stateroom. It’s a guaranteed perfect birthday bash.

* Take a trip to Las Vegas! Another favorite location for milestone birthdays among my friends is a weekend trip to Las Vegas. Anytime you mix friends, casinos, clubs, and alcohol together, it is bound to be a good time. For those who prefer a milder celebration, Las Vegas also offers tons of shopping and architectural sightseeing opportunities. As a seasoned vacationer to Las Vegas, I can attest that one will never be bored when visiting “Sin City”.

Haiti

I have been going to Haiti for about three years now with Child Hope International (www.childhope.org). The poverty I have seen there is pretty incomprehensible, most of the time my mind will not even let me believe that people can live like this. Water is scarce and often dirty and reused, there is expensive food, little money, deforestation, kids are forced into slavery, kidnappings, violence, buildings are not built properly and crumble with no warning, the list goes on and on.

The only reason I go is because I believe that God has put this place on my heart for a reason. The place I go to serve at is an orphanage with 50 kids, they have a boys home and a girls home. These kids came from the streets of Haiti. Many of their lives before were filled with begging and beatings. Things kids should not have to go through. A family from my church moved to Haiti and took these kids in and fed them, clothed them and taught them the Bible. The transformation has been amazing.

My wife and I recently returned from a month in Haiti. The situation there, while still desperate seemed to be improving. There seemed to be less violence, less kidnappings and I even recently heard a report that the GDP of Haiti increased by 2% last year. The electricity and internet were good enough I found that i could work for eDivvy.com from Haiti for a couple of weeks.

Then, the earthquake hit. This really changed everything. I'm sure you've heard the reports. Things are not good and it seems like the situation could easily revert back to total chaos. There really was no infrastructure there and the country is not prepared to deal with a situation like this. Miraculously, my friends in Haiti and all the children survived and there was only one broken leg in the whole group. The buildings for the orphanage were damaged and everyone is sleeping outside because of the aftershocks. There really are no words for devastation for this country.

For the past couple of years, my home phone service has gone from copper to VOIP. I first started with COX communications digital voice. In my area, wasn’t really digital , but it was still using the old copper line. I later switched over to VONAGE because of the services I was getting for virtually the same price (around $30.00 after all the taxes and government fees), then I changed from VONAGE to packet8 to take advantage of some discounts, etc.

You simply 1) activate the device by going to http://www.ooma.com/activate, 2) plug the Ooma Telo device into your internet router, 3) plug your phone into the device, 4) bam! after a bit of time for the Ooma Telo to initialize, you’re up and running and calling anywhere across the US for free!

So what’s the cost? The Ooma Telo (this is the required hub connecting your phone to Ooma’s service) retails for around $249.99. After the initial cost for the Ooma Telo, their an annual cost is $11.95. That’s $0.99 per month! Ooma absorbs this cost the first year (for government fees). That’s it. There is a premier service (http://www.ooma.com/premier/features ) that gives you additional features, but basic gets you unlimited calling through the US.

Some may ask, “What about that device called the MagicJack?” I haven’t tried that out, but that device requires that you to plug it into your computer, and your computer must be running while on the call. The Ooma doesn’t require a computer at all.

Since getting the Ooma device, I thought this would make a great birthday group gift for my dad. Using eDivvy.com, we got it this past weekend, and he was setup in about 15 minutes and he’s been so thankful for it . He was surprised about the quality. We got invited to ride along in one last week – read on…

Last week my car enthusiast friend and I had the pleasure of participating in a ride along with NASCAR race driver Scott Pruett. The ride along was organized by Lexus as a way to gauge the initial interest in Lexus’ much anticipated supercar – the LFA. Built from the ground up, the LFA boasts a 4.8L V10 engine generating 552 HP, with a 202 mph top track speed, and 3.6 second 0-60 second time. Currently only 3 exist in the world, but Lexus is taking an interest list, and isn’t planning on delivering any of the 500 units it plans on producing until 2011. Most everyone who knows me, knows that I’m definitely not a car nut, and I tend to get easily motion sick, but this private, limited ride along was definitely a treat! I’ve had the opportunity to ride in several other supercars ranging from the Ferrari 599 to Nissan’s GTR, and I have to say the Lexus LFA is definitely comfy to ride in and well planted zooming at 160 mph. It’s a great looking car, and flies like a bat out of hell, but is it worth the estimated $375,000.00 Lexus is pricing it at? We’ll see once others get to drive it and not just ride along in it.

Alright, without further adieu, below are some of the photos we were able to get at the ride along and a link to a vid of the LFA going around the track. These were taken at the California Speedway where we got to go 0 to 160 mph, down to 60-70mph around turns and curves. Also below is a bit from my car enthusiast buddy who wrote a bit about the ride-along experience and his take.

Everyone knows that the LFA has been in existence for quite some time. It has shown it’s duds around the Nurburgring with such frequency, people were starting to wonder if the car was ever going to be produced rather than being complacent “testing”.

With much anticipation, the LFA has finally emerged from its rounds at Fuji Raceway and Nurburgring. As this matte black example is undergoing heavy rotation around the North American show circuit, Lexus is careful not to have one of only three cars in existence fall into the wrong hands. This is where Scott Pruett comes into play. 3 time 24hrs of Daytona overall winner, 2 time IMSA GTO champion, Indy 500 co-rookie of the year, 3 time SCCA Trans-Am Champion, he knows how to drive to win and has the proper credentials… you get the picture. He will be my driver and show me a little LFA attitude.

A firm handshake and a solid smile later, Scott Pruett stands next to me as the Lexus provided photographer snaps away. In matte black, the color may be imposing but the car doesn’t seem to be wildly exotic yet all the Lexus sensible thoughts and design elements are in play. Maybe if the car were orange, it would seem wilder, more exotic.

I slide into the front leather seats which are very comfortable and snug. The door shuts confidently beside me. Scott proceeds to run through some of the basic controls of the car, showing the center display that has a tachometer able to slide from right to left on the Thin Film Transistor (TFT) Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) looking much like a futuristic fighter jet console. The tachometer takes on small number of display styles according to driving format (Sport, Wet, Normal) with the driver able to control the different technical information displayed.

The 4.8 liter V10 developed solely for the LFA by Toyota sounds deeper and tighter than the only V10s I’ve heard (BMW and Lamborghini). The technical specifications boasts the V10 being lighter and more compact than the Lexus 2.5 liter V6 that lies in the IS250. Does that mean I can squeeze a V10 into an IS250? I digress, the point is this compact powerhouse is able to output 552hp in a tighter overall package with greater performance benefits as opposed to the hamster flogging 204hp in the IS250.

Scott redlines the LFA somewhere north of 9000rpm, he grabs the F1 style paddle shifters on the steering wheel and the car goes into the next gear without much drama. There is little emotion and fanfare during a gear change, no abrupt lurches or drama, a simple blip and the car continues at warp speed. Downshifting is the same except the sound of this car blipping the throttle during a change to a lower gear could keep me busy for hours on end. He’s hard on the carbon ceramic brakes, my eyeballs hold onto my sockets for dear life and Scott lifts off the brakes, gives the steering wheel a 90 turn and slams his foot on the throttle. The car shoots ahead and my head presses back into the headrest.

This process occurs through ever turn. My head responds to the high g-forces during braking and acceleration all the way till the LFA comes screaming down the banked straight of the California Speedway at 163 mph. Not bad. Around the infield of the California Speedway again for the second lap and Scott makes no excuses to push the LFA hard into the turns and brakes with enough force to have the rear ceramic brakes smoking when I step out after the end of two laps.

So was this a thrill? Definitely! But this still poses the question of whether Lexus can shake the perception of an automobile manufacturer that can produce a product untouchable by horses and bulls. Will the LFA end up being a very fast and well packaged SC430 or LS430 or will this vehicle really have the proper attitude that will carry it into supercardom? I’ll eagerly await the test drive.
