We all agree that 1988 was the greatest year of Hip Hop right? Cool. Well what I’m gooing to do is post the top/greatest Hip Hop albums from each year afterwards, starting with 1989 here (Of course I’ll eventually do 1987 and before), anyway … this is my list, I tried to not be too biased, and this one does not ahve a panel of voters like the future ones will. With that being said, you need the majority of these in your collection regardless of the order they are listed. If you disagree witht he ranking let me know in the comments and on Twitter (@TweetRhymesLife) Now, Lets get to it! 25. As Nasty as They Wanna Be – 2 Live Crew Never been a fan of The 2 Live crew outside of their debut, but I have to respect their influence (For better or worse) on the genre. This album had Me so Horny and that blew up way bigger on a national level that I think it could now, besides that I defy you to name another song of the album (I knew a few of you can), but I WILL say, that the album cover is […]

Girls aint nothing but trouble The first story has Will walking down the street when he sees an attractive woman, he says hello; she identifies herself as “exotic Elaine” … I dunno maybe she was a GLOW or something, but not to be outdone he introduces himself as “The Prince” so I guess they are both strange Moving along… He basically says he raps her up and then flashed some money and she was on his tip … he basically admits to trickin off on her and that got her sewn up: “I took her over town I wined her and dined her She ask me was I horny? I said well kinda” NOTE: I’m going original version, NOT the watered down corny version they re-released after he became famous After noting she was horny, she jumped on him and started hugging and kissing her, and then unlike the kid-friendly Will Smith we all know and love he “Punched her in the chin and said “You better stop buggin” After Will […]

 <itunes:summary>Parental Discretion Iz Advised (1988)

http://eclectikrelaxation.com/Music/Parental.mp3

The first of the Posse Cuts they made, featured Dre, Ren, Cube, Eazy AND was kicked off by The D.O.C before we really knew him as The D.O.C. ... and he was still just as dope back then:

The D.O.C.

"Ain't too typical in any way, though the pro on the mic is the D.O. to the C. this is an intro
I know the DOC makes you want to take a valium So buy a bucket cause upcomin is my album"

Dr. Dre comes next with some of his best work, probably written by Cube:

"Lyrics for the adults, children have been barred and scarred from listenin to somethin so motherfuckin HARD
Dope, pumpin that's so my shit will never falter Yo it's Dre so fuck the "Mind of Minolta""

MC Ren, still underrated, slides thru with some of his Ruthless Villain lyrics

"It's like Apollo, but I'm not an amateur And I'm not givin a fuck, while I'm damagin ya
It's for the record; so Ren's lyrics is gonna spin it And if there was a trophy involved, I'll win it"

Ice Cube bats second to last, in ironically one of his last NWA songs ever:

"Drivin your ass with the flow of your tongue You hung yourself short, the after-knowledge was brung
to your attention, by the hardest motherfuckin artist that is known for lynchin any sucker in a minute
Stagger 'em all When I start flowin like Niagara Falls"

Eazy wraps up the cut, this was back when people couldn’t wait for an Eazy verse, he was truly a star:

"Foreplay; to me ain't shit When you spread 'em I'm ready, then you can get the dick
of the Eaze, if you can deal with the size But if you can't, parental discretion's advised! "

The other (and my favorite) thing about this song is after Eazy says "Advised" it is the LONGEST echo in the history of Hip Hop LOL ... it outlasts all of the music to where at the very end someone yells "Shut the fuck up!!!"

The Grand Finale (1989)

http://eclectikrelaxation.com/Music/GrandFinale.mp3

From The DOC's debut album Dr. Dre serves as the narrator or Host of the song, he doesn’t rhyme (Could be why this is the best of them all)
When Ice Cube is the FIRST to rhyme on a track, you know it must be dope!

Ice Cube:

"Picture a nigga that's raw Amplify his ass and what you see is what's on
Motherfuckers I slaughter, blow em out the water Word to me, fuck the father"

MC Ren then comes with the ruthless flow again

"The grand finale, yo, it's my turn to bust So let weak motherfuckers turn to dust
If you're weak it ain't my fault Just take a kick in the ass and get turn into a pillar of salt"

Eazy - E takes his turn, and again, he steals the show ...

"The name is Eazy for me to come off like the enforcer' Mass murder motherfuckers in a course of
An everyday situation where I would stalk by Fuck the car; I do a motherfucking walk-by"

The D.O.C finishes the song off in grand fashion

"the D.O. to the C. now on the formula It's rough; I mean it's funky enough for me
And you can have a listen after that and this and D-O-N-'T M-O-V-E wit out permission"

The Last Song (1990)

http://eclectikrelaxation.com/Music/LastSong.mp3

The Last song was on Above the Law's "Living like Hustlers" album ... it was The Last song, and featured ATL along with NWA (No DOC this time) but the song was still dope

KM.G kicks it off

"I'm ghetto raise to amaze the crowd, it's quite simple Km.G has degrees from Unity of South Central
I'm a graduate and it's all legit From the pimping, the ballin' and all that good shit"

Dr. Dre up next, he even gets the Express yourself remix beat in the background for a sec

"And if a sucker ever thinks he can get some Yo, step off; I'm kicking lyrics for the deaf and the dumb"

MC Ren comes and flips his verse a little different from the others

"Now when you see me, you're ducking and slipping, yo, then you fell Down
You fucked up and finally figured who was the cell down"

<itunes:summary>Christmas time, cannot forget about Hip Hop; Especially the Diamond and Golden Era; the contributions to the holiday is actually more than Just Christmas in Hollis LOL
I figured I'd take a moment to count down what I think to be the 10 Best Hip Hop songs of that Era

10. Run DMC - Christmas Is
(1992)

"No dough for Christmas"

Run DMC back on their Christmas thing ... not quite Christmas in Hollis, but as far as Hip Hop is Concerned, Daryl, Joe, and Jason are the end all be all.
.... hey you even get a REALLY young Vanessa and Angela

Give up the Dough for Christmas YO!

httpv://youtu.be/dX77dg5lk6c

9. Merry Muthafukin Xmas - Eazy E
(1992)

http://eclectikrelaxation.com/Music/Xmas/EazyEXmas.mp3

You get Dolomite and kids ... not sure that should ever go together by the way

"Dashin' through the snow, in a candy right top 6-4
over the hills I go, laughin' at this hoe
nuts on her chin ring ... makin' me feel right
oh what fun it is to know, that I'm gonna get this pussy tonight"

... Eric Wright at his finest LOL

Look you get Will.I.Am and Apl.De.Ap WAY before Black Eyed Peas ... that's something

8. Christmas Rappin - Kurtis Blow
(1979)

http://eclectikrelaxation.com/Music/Xmas/KurtisXmas.mp3

Look we get one of the most used samples in the 80s here "Hold it now! Wait, hold it. That's played out." Gotta love it!
A lot of people think Christmas Rhymes started (and ended) with Christmas in Hollis ... but this was the joint for quite a while
... it sounding just like The Breaks helped lol

"Toys for the boys, for the girls glad rags
And the grownups got some presents too
A new TV and a stereo
A new Seville bout as blue as the sky
The best that money couldn't buy"

httpv://youtu.be/AFtA7IHZgzw

7. Millie Pulled a Pistol on Santa - De La Soul
(1991)

Doing a song about Santa getting shot is one thing ... and not a very good thing
Doing a story about Santa getting shot by his daughter is another thing
Doing a story about Santa getting shot because he was molesting his daughter ... SHEESH!
AND making it the jam!?
De La Soul is do dope ...

"Wanted to know if I could get a loaded pistol
That ain't a problem but why would Millie need one
She said she wanted her pops Dillon to heed one
Ran some style about him pushin' on her privates
Look honey, I don't care if you kick five fits
There's no way that you can prove to me that Dill's flip
He might breathe a blunt but ya jeans he wouldn't rip"

httpv://youtu.be/luuZ8O8RY7w

6. Run DMC and The Christmas All Stars - Santa Baby
(1997)

http://eclectikrelaxation.com/Music/Xmas/RunSantaBab.mp3

Again we get Run DMC on a Christmas track ... you have to have that! Before this song I had never heard "Santa Baby" before ... I thought this was a weird original song LOL
But hey, we got
Run DMC
Ma$e
Snoop Dogg
Salt N Pepa
Onyx
Keith Murray
... that's a strong All Star lineup for any Hip Hop Posse Cut, I mean Onyx yellin at us about Christmas LOL

and Keith ...
"On December 25th I knew I wasn't getting jack
when I saw Santa Claus on the corner buying crack"

httpv://youtu.be/Aeo6azbXAiU

5. Let the Jingle Bells Rock - Sweet Tee
(1987)

http://eclectikrelaxation.com/Music/Xmas/SweetJingle.mp3

You really didn’t get many females doing Christmas Hip Hop Songs, but we DID get Sweet Tee

"How many of you can seriously say
You heard a girl rock the mic this way?
I say it with feeling, add a little passion
But I do it in a ladylike fashion
On the go, whether fast or slow
I'm a pro, so my rhymes flow
Grab a friend and have some fun here
Christmas is once a year"

Wish we could’ve gotten some Jazzy Joyce on the ones and twos but still ... rare jam

4. Dana Dane is coming to town - Dana Dane
(1987)

http://eclectikrelaxation.com/Music/Xmas/DanaComin.mp3

Dana Dane in the 80s could do zero wrong

This joint was part Delancy Street part Cinderfella ...</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>In 1985 Doug E Fresh and the Get Fresh Crew dropped the Hip Hop Classic "The Show"
(In my opinion the greatest 12" Single in Hip Hop History)

The Show
http://eclectikrelaxation.com/Music/TheShow.mp3

The song was an immediate hit, from the Inspector Gadget theme sample to the drum programing, and the voice sample "is it real" in the background ... a club, block, party, bedroom banger all around

The song basically details Doug and the GFC as they are getting ready for a show, narrated my MC Ricky D (Slick Rick) and Doug E Fresh

First, discussing wack rappers on stage whose rhymes don’t come out right ... mainly because they're biting
Doug taking too long putting on his trademark Ballys ... and the first Hip Hop mention of a Shoe horn and corns LOL
... six minutes to go they still cannot find Chill and Barry, though they finally show

Classic beat boxing

When Doug tells us the GFC origin and how he does his classic sounds, and gives us a brief look at the differences between his and The Fat Boys Human Beat Box ... then passes the mic to Slick Rick

Slick Rick gives us a tale of going downtown and running into this pretty woman on the train ... for some reason; she roared at him (You know there are some weird people in NY, especially on the train tho)
After schooling the fine young lady on the difference between The Ruler Slick Rick and Frosted Flakes, he treated the woman identified as Michelle to his rendition of the Beatles song by the same name

"Michelle, my belle.
Sont des mots qui vont très bien ensemble,
Très bien ensemble"

(Dont act like you knew what he said after 'belle' LOL)

The song wraps up with some classic beat boxing and Doug reminding everyone how fresh he and his crew are

Not to be outdone!

In 1986 a New Hip Hop Group Super nature made a return record to The Show

The Show Stoppa
http://eclectikrelaxation.com/Music/TheShowStoppaIs%20Stupid%20Fresh.mp3

Again, after the Roxanne Wars, a response record was the thing to do, this one started off with Sandy D being posed a question similar to Doug E Fresh but ... slightly ... different

"Have you ever been to jams were people just stand, they pay to come in and they don’t even dance?"
They're Souped ... they're so uncouth,
They think they're cute ..."

This is when we find out that these are the Salt n Pepa emcees and they introduce us to "The Jam" and instead of the Inspector Gadget Theme, they give us the Revenge of the Nerds theme (From the ending talent show of the first movie) ... pretty dope.

So clearly this is a response to the Show, but just in case it's not obvious enough:

"Sandy, you know we're breakin hearts you know ... it's all about money though ... But Douglass and Richard won’t like it ... so?"
... come on then lets STOP THE SHOW

So much like Roxanne Roxanne and Revenge, where the first song didn’t target anyone, the response had direct aim...

"This beat is stupid fresh, awww yeah you know it, cold dissed Doug Fresh"

They talk about Rick's Ballys, Gucci Suit and Gold Tooth from La Di Da Di and even sings to mimic The Ruler ... and the beat uses a beat box as well, they include Sally from the Valley and ends the song with dissing Rick walking away

Overall two great songs, one was a smash hit and arguably one of the greatest songs in Hip Hop History, the other wasn’t a smash but gave us an introduction to the greatest and most influential female groups in Hip Hop.

A MORE Scathing diss was done by The Symbolic Three ...
They crush Doug's looks and gear ... Rick's dancing, calls him Gay, a tinkerbell LOL
... the group didnt amount to much, but the song is notable

In compiling the list I realized there weren’t as many all female groups as I originally thought, I also realized there was so much potential and how sad it is that there are zero such groups now … oh well It’s always good to go down memory lane and acknowledge the forefathers and sisters that made Hip Hop so great, keep the music and feeling alive so … 10. He had the voice and lyrics to match … on his debut album “XL” he did 3 love song/story’s from three different angles, pursuit, in the relationship, and the breakup … it was dope. The only problem with his first album is it came out far after his first singles. Hey Love/Mythological Rappers he did with D Moet was an incredible 12″ record in 1987 //www.youtube.com/watch?v=dja-ahEodxg The Song Hey Love where he sampled Moments in Love … this was 1987 a love Hip Hop Song and that Sample was incredible, they rocked this song on the Quiet Storm on […]

... This was played throughout the album which made it even more innovative, let alone the questions:

How many feathers are on a Purdue chicken?

What does 'touche et al le pu' mean?
How many times did the Batmobile catch a flat?

LOL and shoutouts to Don Newkirk and Dante the Scrub ...

Not to be outdone, De La Soul is dead featured a comic strip and a Grade School "turn the page" beep in the interludes

Unfortunately in the 90s the majority of skits on Hip Hop albums included the emcee receiving oral sex, having sex or smoking weed; I never understood why they thought this would be entertaining to listen to (or picturing ... Hi Biggie)

Anyway, I wanted to do a list of my favorite skits from the Golden and Silver era of Hip Hop, so take a read and a listen, if you have favorites or want to comment on your memories or thoughts of these, feel free below or tweet me @TweetRhymesLife

Let's get to it!

10. The Infamous Prelude
The Infamous (1995)

http://eclectikrelaxation.com/Music/InfamousPrelude.mp3

One of the early skits (If you want to call it a skit) of the 90s that did NOT include sex or drug use ... it was a straight message (To we think we know who), it was straight up honest, pissed off P
Punching in the face for living will forever be classic

9. "Woodrow the Base Head"
Supreme Clientele (2000)

http://eclectikrelaxation.com/Music/Woodrow.mp3

People sleep on Woodrow as a skit, mentioned on the "Purple Tape" podcast me and my friends still tell Suzy to throw it out the window ... SU!

8. JD's Gaffilin
AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted (1990)

http://eclectikrelaxation.com/Music/JDGafflin.mp3

An early classic, JD tellin all yall what use to happen in the Drive thru ... with the most Cali-est of accents you were going to find at the time lol

7. Shark Biters
Only Built 4 Cuban Linx... (1995)

http://eclectikrelaxation.com/Music/SharkBiters.mp3

The Purple Tape's skits are legend, this one let us in on a beef we didn’t know existed and featured the only time a hard core rapper ever giggled on wax LOL

6. Ghost and Wallys
Only Built 4 Cuban Linx... (1995)

http://eclectikrelaxation.com/Music/Clarks.mp3

This got everyone hyped to go and dye their Wallys ... better yet, it made everyone want to go and get Wallys ... Ghost's enthusiasm over completing his master plan made everyone want to drip their joints like marble cake.

5. Torture
Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) (1993)

http://eclectikrelaxation.com/Music/Torture.mp3

Classic for all the wrong reasons, this is the most gruesome, painful skit of them all ... how they tried to outdo each other is only outdone by the sound effects that they provided; everyone can do this one by heart

4. The $20 Sack Pyramid
The Chronic (1992)

http://eclectikrelaxation.com/Music/20Sack.mp3

A Take on a classic game show (I'll also say a nod to De La's classic *Though I know it isn’t lol) The D.O.C's voice actually makes the skit even funnier

3. Chinese Restaurant
The Score (1996)

http://eclectikrelaxation.com/Music/ChineseRestaurant.mp3

The Fugees are not known for their humor, or skits ...but this one is so on point ... Hard fried chicken, Flying fists of Judah ... and who knew that's what that other part of the wing was called? Hilarious

2. Is he Dead
Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) (1993)

http://eclectikrelaxation.com/Music/IsHeDead.mp3

I don’t even know what else to call this, but it's classic. It starts off with the Killer tape, but once "Is he dead" is uttered and Ghosts' reaction!? My personal most quoted skit ever

1. Madd Rapper
Life After Death (1997)

The story starts with E Double and a girl Kim he met at a Hip Hop club … very sweaty girl. She was trying to get Erick to leave because she was ready to sex him down Knowing this, Erick rolls a blunt (In the club? I guess …) They went back to Kim’s house, who was living right judging by the crib … not only that she cooks as she offered E some BBQ Ribs Erick declines and asks for some Gin, they settle in and she plays Roni by “Mr. Bobby Brown” by the time it was really to get down to business Erick suggests she puts on James Brown This may have taken Kim by surprise as she says… “No kinky stuff, like ropes or handcuffs But when you love me please don’t be ruff” To which E Dubs responds with singing “I’ll be gentle, I’ll be very gentle, when I’m ahlovin yooooouu … when I’m lovin yoouuuuuuu” Before they could really get down to […]

"Black medallions, no gold"
When they got together on a track it was always magic, so what I wanted to do is put my top 10 best Native Tongues collaboration tracks, I tried to make sure they included more than two members or acts; read, listen, enjoy and let me know what you think in the comments or on Twitter: @TweetRhymesLife

10. Momma Gave Birth to the Soul Children

Album: All Hail the Queen
Year: 1989
Native Tongues Members: Queen Latifah, De La Soul

No secret I’m not Queen Latifah fan, she's hands down my least favorite Native tongue member ... she’s never repped the tongues like the others ever.
Queen Latifah's debut album, not the best song on the album by a long shot but its notable as one of the first cameos for De La Soul
Trugoy with the classic intro, Pos with the assist still in the daisy age ... check it out
I remember they played this song on In Living Color while the fly girls danced

http://eclectikrelaxation.com/Music/SoulChildren.mp3

9. Doin our own dang

Album: Done by the forces of nature
Year: 1989
Native Tongues Members: Jungle Brothers, De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, and Monie Love

The Tongues seemed to have a ton of fun when they were together, and this song and especially the video illustrated it
They even had Plug 3 rhyming!
Everyone came with it on the song; Monie Love might've had the best verse
This is Native Tongues at tier best ... the styles and the flow all original ... the fashion and hair in the video as well lol A+

http://youtu.be/4xlvLUKRhWw
8. "Saturdays" What your life can truly be

Album: Roller Skating Jam called Saturday's single
Year: 1991
Native Tongues Members: De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, Dres

This is NOT A Roller Skating Jam called Saturdays, this is like ... part II; a lot of people never heard this song because they had the De La Soul is Dead album and never bought the single
You had to cop the CasSingle!! lol De La and Tribe brought Dres into the mix and made a hit
This song might not be better than the "original" ...but anything with Vinia Mojica is great ... plus there's a Woody Woodpecker sample

http://eclectikrelaxation.com/Music/WhatYoLifeCanTrulyBe.mp3

7. The Promo

Album: Straight out the jungle
Year: 1988
Native Tongues Members: Jungle Brothers and Q-Tip

The Promo was the first time I ever heard Q-Tip, the Promo's 1 and 2 were great singles (Especially Promo 2 the other side had J Beez comin thru on it) this was people’s instinctive came out
This song was an ill simple hip hop JB's joint beats and rhymes
"Get it, if not you're a goner"

http://eclectikrelaxation.com/Music/The%20Promo.mp3

6. Fanatic of The B Word

Album: De La Soul is Dead
Year: 1991
Native Tongues Members: De La Soul, Jungle Brothers, Black Sheep

Another joint from the De La Soul is Dead album, the Native tongues posse cuts always a party, this one starts with a role call with Dreddy Bear
Different flows by all on this song, this was post D.A.I.S.Y age, Dres shows up and kills the dope track as well (Move over just a bit to the right of me, for I cannot see; where the booty is)
The shoutouts at the end are classic
"And you can't beat that with a baseball bat"

5. La Ménage

Album: A Wolf in sheep's clothing
Year: 1989
Native Tongues Members: black Sheep and Q-Tip

This is a different type of song for The Tongues, it's overtly sexual ... and while others have been this is more blatant LOL I mean it's called "La Ménage"
The track is crazy, one of my favorite Black Sheep songs ever
Basically this is Dres and Mista Lawnge and their sexcapade with a random lucky lady .. and Q-Tip with the wrap up (Tip plus Lawnge, plus the ho equals wet sheets)
The talking at the end is hilarious, golden showers and anal tongue darts? lol
