OCLC: Diversity Fellowship Program (Metadata/Quality Control)

OCLC is currently seeking candidates for a Diversity Fellowship Program (Metadata/Quality Control) position at our Corporate Headquarters in Dublin (Columbus), Ohio.

The Fellow will work for 6 months with the contract cataloging-related services and then 6 months with quality control. This joint cooperative opportunity will provide well-rounded exposure to cataloging rules, practices, standards, processes, and challenges from both libraries’ and OCLC’s perspectives. The Fellow will be provided with overviews of OCLC services and processes, learning opportunities to develop technical skills, and will be asked to meet objectives contributing to the success of each unit.

Responsibilities:

Metadata Contract Services: The Fellow will gain experience in cataloging and collection development of diverse sets of materials that can be used in future professional growth by learning about the varying needs of libraries and material-supplier partners. The Fellow will be working along with the production cataloging staff as well as individually performing tasks such as:

· Understanding the cataloging process from beginning to end

o Performing order entry of inbound library and vendor materials

o Cataloging multiple material types for client libraries including some non-English materials; this experience will include creating and contributing new records to WorldCat and enhancing existing records per client specifications and within specified timeframes

o Performing local edits to records prepared for delivery to libraries per libraries’ specifications and requirements for their automated systems and local cataloging conventions

o Perform shelf-ready physical processing tasks in accordance with library collection specifications

· Receive training on OCLC services to complete assigned tasks and become familiar with related tools including Cataloger’s Desktop, Library of Congress ClassWeb, OCLC WebDewey, Connexion Client, and other OCLC services as applicable

· Learn about RDA (Resource Description and Access) from staff who have completed training and participated in the test phase of this new code

Quality Control: The Fellow will learn to process and correct identified sets of problem/error master records in the WorldCat database including reporting problems with Library of Congress (LC) records directly to LC. A wide variety of problems incorporating all aspects of the cataloging record will be included in this work. The Fellow will also learn the basics of NACO processing of name and series authority records and gain familiarity with the PCC (Program for Cooperative Cataloging). The Fellow will have training in processing and merging duplicate records in various formats including books, serials, scores, sound recordings, maps, and computer files. The Fellow will have the opportunity to gain a broad overview of database maintenance for the largest bibliographic database in the world. The Quality Control Section is part of OCLC’s WorldCat Quality Management Division.

Qualifications

· ALA-accredited MLS/MLIS degree (granted by July 2012)

· Have less than three years post graduate work experience

· Some familiarity with MARC, AACR2 and/or RDA, Dewey Decimal Classification or Library of Congress Classification, Library of Congress subject headings (course work would be acceptable)

· Desire to specialize in cataloging/technical services

· Fluent reading skills in a language other than English (preferred)

· Demonstrated awareness and sensitivity in issues of diversity and inclusion: strong awareness of other cultures and viewpoints, appreciation for the benefits of diversity in the workplace and library community, behavior which demonstrates the ability to work with people at all levels and from different backgrounds

· Strong organizational skills which include the ability to organize work plans and processes toward a targeted outcome

· Exceptional communication skills – written, oral, small group presentation

· Selected individual must represent historically underrepresented groups (i.e., defined in a manner consistent with the 2007 EEO-1 race/ethnicity reporting classifications)

· Note: The Fellow will be required to sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement as some of the vendor processes to which he/she will be exposed are proprietary

Salary and Benefits

· Salary will be very competitive and commensurate with experience and applicable market compensation

· The Fellow will be eligible for health & welfare benefits such as is provided to other similarly situated term-limited employees

· Relocation Assistance will be offered in the form of a lump sum distributed in two installments (50% at signing of offer and 50% after 90 days of start date). The amount of the lump sum will be determined by the distance required for relocation during the term of the fellowship

It is a part collections, and part administrative position, reporting to the Wason Curator and providing general assistance and support to the Wason Collection and the Asia Collection on a variety of levels. Maintain professional contacts with libraries and research institutions in Japan as well as the community of East Asian or Japanese collections in North America. Represent the University Library in regional and national organizations of Japanese collections.

QUALIFICATIONS

ALA accredited Master’s degree in Library or Information Science, or an equivalent combination of a relevant advanced degree and experience.
Experience providing reference services to faculty and students. Knowledge of scholarly resources for Japanese studies, reference tools, and electronic resources.
Up-to-date knowledge of library application of computer technology and knowledge of computing in the Japanese language and script.
Proficiency in communicating with Japanese libraries, institutions, publishers, vendors, and donors in both written and spoken Japanese.
Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively and collegially with a staff of diverse cultural, ethnic, and linguistic backgrounds.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Responsibilities:

Collection development and management:

• Select Japanese language monographs and serials, manage book funds, request the Japanese collection materials budget, approve gifts and exchanges, and identify titles to for off-campus storage and/or de-accessioning to accommodate incoming materials.

• Perform complex, high-level bibliographic research and maintain bibliographic files in support of collection development and access, e.g., design and execute collection evaluations in specialized subject areas or genres; screen professional review journals to identify relevant titles for purchase; develop and manages desiderata files and relations with relevant out-of-print and antiquarian dealers; provide specialized research assistance for creating access tools. Must have knowledge of both print and computer-based bibliographic research in general and specialized sources.

• Serve as liaison with Stanford Japanese Studies faculty, consult and respond to their teaching and research needs.

• Plan and write grant proposals for developing the Japanese collection.

• Evaluate and manage digital products and services which support Japanese Studies. Decide appropriate cataloging treatments and retention policies for digital products.

• Manage the gift and exchange program for Japanese materials, including correspondence with institutions and individuals; correspond with donors of endowed funds.

• Participate in fund-raising for the Japanese collection. Encourage and cultivate close relations with donors of funds and materials relating to Japanese studies.

• Collect and report on annual statistics for the Japanese collection.

• Collaborate with other librarians to ensure coverage of interdisciplinary areas that lie outside conventional subject boundaries.

Public services:

• Provide bibliographic and reference services to Stanford faculty and students as well as
Users outside of the Stanford community on topics related to Japan, provide library orientation tours and hands-on Japanese database searching sessions.

• Serve as liaison to Stanford Japanese studies faculty. Consult and respond to their
teaching and research needs, keeping them apprised of the latest resources.

• Assist visitors, including scholars, librarians, publishers as well as vendors from Japan, who visit the EAL and other Stanford library collections.

• Assist the SUL Interlibrary Department with interlibrary borrowing requests.

• Prepare reference guides that enhance access to the collections.

• Maintain and update the Japanese collection webpages.

• Participate in national and international professional associations and societies.

Required Qualifications and Demonstrated Experiences:

• MLS/MLIS from an ALA accredited program or equivalent training and experience. Knowledge and interest in academic or research libraries and the research environment in major universities. Experience in an academic or research library highly desirable.

• Expert knowledge of Japanese Studies. An advanced degree or equivalent in education, training, and/or scholarly experience in East Asian studies is required. PhD level degree or equivalent is preferred.

• Native, or functionally native, level fluency in Japanese Interagency Language Roundtable (ILR) level 5 in reading, speaking,listening and writing, or equivalent.

• Proficiency in modern spoken Japanese and has full requisite knowledge of Japanese native culture, and demonstrated fluency in Japanese to communicate with publishers, book sellers and international donors that are native speakers from Japan.

• Proficiency in communicating with Japanese libraries and institutions in both written and spoken Japanese for acquisitions, fund raising and book donations.

• Knowledge of Japanese bibliographic resources, including electronic resources. Knowledge of the commercial and non-commercial sources of materials in Japanese studies. Knowledge of scholarly resources for Japanese studies, reference tools, electronic resources, and trends in publishing industry and book trade in Japan. Experience of providing reference services to faculty and students who are native speakers in Japanese studies, including database and internet searching, and familiarity with library resources in digital formats. Demonstrated experience in a customer service oriented atmosphere responding to complex questions and problems. Must have strong public service commitment.

• High level proficiency with digital resources, web technology, e.g. drupal, web updates, experience in the management of electronic resources, effective use of current technologies, interest in staying abreast of current technologies and trends.

• Knowledge of OCLC, AACR2, LC subject headings and classifications, MARC21 formats and authority files is highly preferred.

• Successful experience in developing and managing budgets.Effectively coordinate the delegation of responsibilities.

Major Duties:

Coordinates the Division's security, preservation, and collection and space-management programs. Determines digitization project priorities through consultation with other Library managers. Develops and recommends policy encompassing the use of materials in the Division's custody, and the provision of reference and research service to meet the needs of the scholars, publishers, and other research communities.

Performs the full range of human resource management functions related to the supervised staff. Sets and clearly communicates performance expectations for staff and oversees performance management principles in accord with Library regulations, procedures and collective bargaining agreements. Provides informal feedback and periodically assesses staff on organizational performance. Resolves informal complaints and grievances and takes necessary personnel actions. Provides advice and counsel to staff and subordinate managers on work and policy matters.

Develops, conceives, plans, and implements policies and guidelines impacting a wide range of emerging, and/or critical agency programs. Interprets new legislation and/or Library strategic goals into program goals, actions, and policies. Recognized as a Library authority in planning and developing new policies and program objectives with a broad or long-range impact on the Library, as well as the subject fields under the purview of the Asian Division.

Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with various high-level managers and officials, including Members of Congress and their staffs, other legislative and executive agencies, members of the Madison Council, and other executives of major corporations, and distinguished members of the public, including scholars, to advance the mission of the Asian Division and the mission of the Library of Congress, furthering it's strategic goals.

Qualifications:

(3) Professional knowledge of one or more of the countries, languages and regions covered by the Asian Division**: Professional knowledge of the countries, languages and regions covered by the division in order to command credibility in the research and information communities, to recognize trends in research, and identify collaborative opportunities with persons from the region.

(4) Ability to Communicate in Writing: The ability to produce written products related to the responsibilities of the position, such as policies, program goals and objectives, business plans, budget documents, and performance management documents.

(5) Ability to Define and Solve Problems and Make Decisions: The ability to identify the problem or issue, and to gather, examine, and interpret information to generate effective solutions to problems and make sound decisions. The University of California at Berkeley invites applications for the position of Librarian for the Japanese Collection at the C. V. Starr East Asian Library. The Starr Library houses the largest collection of research materials in the Japanese language at any university outside Asia. Its comprehensive Japanese collection contains more than 385,000 volumes and nearly 2,000 current Japanese serial titles, as well as electronic databases and non-print materials in Japanese. The C. V.

Starr East Asian Library serves the campus community and a substantial number of off-campus users.

The Library: As the oldest and largest library in the University of California system, the University Library is internationally renowned.

Collections include more than 10 million bound volumes and about 50,000 current serial titles. Library facilities on the Berkeley campus include the Doe/Moffitt Library complex, the Bancroft Library, the C. V. Starr East Asian Library and additional libraries serving subject specialties.

The C. V. Starr East Asian Library is the second largest library of research materials in East Asian languages among all North American universities, with combined holdings of more than 1 million volumes, over 4,000 current serials, and over 70,000 pieces of microform.

This position reports to the Director of the C. V. Starr East Asian Library.

Responsibilities: The incumbent will evaluate and select Japanese language materials in all subject areas, formats, and media, including electronic; manage acquisitions funds, prepare requests for funds, and expend funds. When necessary or advantageous, the incumbent will coordinate acquisitions with Stanford University or other UC campus libraries, either through existing agreements or by exploring additional areas of cooperation. He or she will select materials for storage or withdrawal, preservation, microfilming, or digitization. The incumbent will review and redefine collection policy to meet the teaching and research needs of faculty and students, and attempt to anticipate subject areas and types of research materials that should be collected.

The incumbent will work with the Director to identify and initiate applications for grant funds to improve access to, or conservation of, the Japanese collection.

In addition to collection management, the incumbent will provide reference and consultation services for scholars and students in Japanese studies. He or she will respond to individual queries and conduct bibliographic instruction as requested, serving as library liaison for faculty and students. The incumbent will work with the East Asian Library’s Technical Services unit to create and maintain name authority files for items in the Japanese collection.

The incumbent may supervise a bibliographical assistant and represent the Library in regional, national, and international cooperative programs and special projects concerning Japanese collections and materials.

UC Berkeley librarians are expected to participate in library-wide planning and governance, to work effectively in a shared decision-making environment and to be active professionally. We seek a knowledgeable, creative, and dynamic individual to be the first East Asian Studies Librarian in the Hesburgh Libraries, University of Notre Dame.

Responsibilities:

Faculty engaged in East Asian studies, students enrolled in East Asian courses, and university initiatives focused on East Asia have increased rapidly during the past several years. The East Asian Studies Subject Librarian will have responsibility for building basic reference collections in the area as well as crafting special collections in nontraditional areas of East Asian Studies that are focused on local faculty and student interests. The Subject Librarian will also be responsible for acquiring Western language resources as appropriate.

Communication with faculty and graduate students on a regular basis is critical to the success of this position. East Asian collections and resources need to be acquired in support of the broader campus initiatives rather than as stand-alone collections. The increased interest in visual arts, opportunities for participation in interdisciplinary studies and a university-wide emphasis on internationalization, all provide an impetus for development of East Asian resources for the future. The Library supports wide participation of Subject Librarians in strategic university initiatives.

The East Asian Studies Librarian will provide subject specific library instruction and advanced reference services at the undergraduate, graduate and faculty levels as appropriate, and serve as the Libraries’ liaison to the relevant faculty and departments. The Librarian will publicize the Libraries’ collections and services in various ways, such as creating rare book and other collection exhibits.

The East Asian Studies Librarian will work to establish functional and cost-effective methods of acquiring and making available East Asian language materials in a variety of formats. This process may include shelf ready acquisitions when possible, using the OCLC Selection and Cataloging Partners programs as well as working with local student or temporary employees.

Funding is provided through endowments and through the cooperation of faculty who have been allocated funds to develop materials collections to support their individual research agendas. Thus strategic decisions of when to invest in specific resources is a shared responsibility in all subject areas.

As a member of the Collection Development Department, the incumbent will participate in Department activities and programs and will report to the Head, Collection Development Department.

As a member of the Library Faculty, the incumbent participates in faculty and professional activities in the University Libraries, within the University, and in library or professional organizations. Each Library faculty member engages in professional development including scholarship and service to the profession with a commitment to continuing growth and development as well as contributing to the profession’s growth through scholarship in librarianship, information science, or other relevant fields. Each Library faculty member helps to shape future library services by participating in library-wide planning teams, through individual collaboration throughout the Libraries, and by leading or participating in development projects.

Qualifications:

Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program, and/or Ph.D. in an appropriate subject or equivalent; 3 years professional experience; strong collection development background, strong oral and written communication skills, ability to approach the position creatively and to develop a non-traditional approach to collection development. Ability and desire to work within a collegially cooperative environment and to contribute to the Libraries’ priorities, strategies and accomplishments are critical qualities for the success of this appointment. Capabilities in Japanese and Korean languages and the ability to communicate in those languages is highly desirable. Experience using CJK bibliographic utilities for searching; knowledge of Pinyin conversion and Chinese transcription is important as is knowledge of the relevant publishing industries and trends in scholarly communication.

The successful candidate must be well versed in applications of technology to provide specific services in the area of East Asian Studies.

Ability to work with relevant teams to develop grant applications and to seek creative funding opportunities in cooperation with University and Library agendas is an important element of the position.

Position Available: Position is open until filled. This is a full-time, twelve-month, tenure-system faculty appointment. The librarian appointment is permanent, but all current unit head appointments in the University Library are five-year, renewable terms. The successful candidate must meet requirements for tenure at the University of Illinois, which includes expectations for librarianship, research and service.

Duties and Responsibilities: Reporting to the University Librarian, the Head of the International and Area Studies (IAS) Library will provide leadership for, and supervision, of library services to students, faculty, and other scholars using resources in international and areas studies. This is an opportunity to lead reshaping international and area studies services to users in a major university research library which is involved in rethinking library services through a “new service model” process (www.library.illinois.edu/nsm/). The vision of the IAS Library is to be University's gateway to the world of information and scholarship about international, global, and area studies which are distinct and complementary scholarly projects. The successful candidate will:

· Provide leadership for the successful integration of personnel and core activities supporting collections and public services into the new International and Area Studies (IAS) Library;

· Oversee operations and establish priorities for core services in the IAS Library, including reference service, collection development and management, liaison, outreach, instruction, and support for digital scholarship;

· Collaborate collegially and cooperatively with other personnel in the IAS Library, other unit heads, the AUL for Services, and the AUL for Collections;

· Communicate with campus constituent groups such as International and Area Studies Centers, and user communities;

· Direct the selection, training, evaluation, and deployment of support staff members and graduate assistants/hourly staff in IAS Library;

The University of Chicago Library invites applicants for the position of Chinese Studies Librarian. The East Asian Collection supports teaching and research needs of the faculty and students at the University of Chicago. It holds a collection of nearly 800,000 volumes in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean languages of various formats. It also has a growing collection of electronic resources. The Chinese collection of over 450,000 volumes is particularly strong in classics, philosophy, history, literature, archaeology, philology and art history. The East Asian Collection is housed in the Joseph Regenstein Library.

Under the direction of the Curator of the East Collection, this position is responsible for the following:

Select materials in all formats including electronic resources both in the Chinese language and those on Chinese studies in Western languages, develop a long-term acquisitions policy to support teaching and reserch needs, manage the acquisitions budget allocated, and serve as a liaison to Chinese studies faculty and students.

Provide reference services and bibliographical instruction for faculty and students regarding the Library’s services and its resources, the bibliographic methods, and research strategies. Responsible for managing, coordinating computer support, and providing services to Chinese studies e-resources. Develop and maintain electronic finding aids and subject guides on Chinese studies for the EA Collection’s web page. Participate in the development of digital/multimedia resources and services in the Library and on campus.

Under the direction of the Head of East Asia Technical Services, perform original cataloging for Chinese materials in all formats. Participate in formulating cataloging policy, priorities, and work procedures. Participate in the activities of the library and scholarly organizations at the local, regional, national, and international level.

QUALIFICATIONS: Education: A graduate library degree from an ALA-accredited library school with graduate work in Chinese studies or closely-related subject field, or a Ph.D. in Chinese Studies, is required. Experience: Significant related experience in an academic research library is required. Experience or demonstrated knowledge of scholarly resources for Chinese studies, reference tools, electronic resources, and trends in publishing industry and book trade in China and Taiwan is also required. Experience or demonstrated knowledge of OCLC, AACR2, LC subject headings and classifications, MARC21 formats and authority files is highly preferred. Awareness of RDA and other metadata standards is desirable. Skills: Candidates must demonstrate an ability to work effectively with faculty, students and staff and possess excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communications skills. A high degree of computer literacy and a demonstrated interest in the application of information technologies are required. Languages: Fluency in English and Chinese languages is required including reading knowledge of classical Chinese.
