Celebrating Black History- Ms Octavia Butler

To celebrate Black history month I want to praise one of the greatest storyteller's to ever put pen to paper, Ms Octavia butler

“the thing that I want to build is so damned new and so vast. I not only don’t know how to build it, but I’m not even sure what it will look like when I have built it. I’m just feeling my way. Using what ever I can do, whatever I can learn to take one more step forward”

These were words coming out of the mouth of Octavia via her character “Lauren Oya Olamina” in the story “Parable of the Talents”. I was introduced to Octavia by my mother. My mom and I both share a love for science fiction, good stories, and nerdy things all around. She would always tell me I should read her, but like most teenagers I hated reading! It wasn’t until I was in my mid twenties that I picked up “Wild Seed”. I started it and could not fathom how or why I was done with it days later. I read Parable of the Sower, Clay’s Ark, again same thing; and I’m a slow reader. I have many people to credit for teaching me how to read and Octavia is one of them. I’ve read 6 or 7 of her books and the last one is read was “Fledgling”. Her work not only weaves present day struggles and ideas into futuristic planes; it dissects society, flourishes with love, and promotes character.

I asked my mother to describe how she came across Butler’s work. Rubbing her hands together she began to describe a teacher and a library at Peltan junior high in Hunters Point San Francisco where she went to school. She had a professor who was into science fiction and led her to Butler’s work. She went on to tell me that winning the Nebula and the Hugo for a black woman at that time was unheard of. Not only were there few women who had one the award, but few people of color who had won it. Also, MacArthur awards, which Butler also won are usually reserved for people in science? Wow.

After reading a little bit on Octavia on wiki, I decided it best to leave her beginnings and finer details to you to research. I ahvent read her story “Kindred” yet so moms told me that I still had some reading to do. She also said that she was interested in Butler’s work and that of other science fiction writers because it gave a glimpse into a world outside of what we know. There’s tons of information on her, even a scholarship for writers of color set up in her name. Happy page turning.

I give health lectures and cooking classes for the public, in between homeschooling my children and keeping home for my hubby Devon. I'm a home school mom of 2 children. I live in the beautiful countryside of Virginia. My 13 year old home schooler leads out in design, photography, and graphic as part of home schooling . We grow all of the herbs organically that are used in the soaps.

Takeaways From Hello Etsy

Sunday, September 18, 2011, I attended what I hope will be the first of many Hello Etsy conferences. The Washington, DC summit was one of five such events held in the U.S. simultaneously with the two-day Hello Etsy: A Summit on Small Business and Sustainability held on September 17-18 in Berlin, Germany. The purpose of the two-day gathering was to provide a venue for small business owners to connect with their peers, learn the skills to find success and independence, and partake in the movement to build human-scale economies.

After the keynote address by Jenny Hart, I attended a Think Local First DC breakout session where the organization’s Executive Director, Stacey Price, provided information on the benefits of appealing to the local market as well as how to better tap into it. In addition to specific references and tools, one of the more compelling takeaways was how to use “local” as a unique selling point in promoting online shops.

I was pleased to have gotten an opportunity to meet Tara Gentile (http://www.taragentile.com/), creative business coach and blogging guru extraordinaire. I had read her 52 Week of Blogging and the follow-on 52 More Weeks of Blogging which have become my blogging library and are essential reading for those who are already blogging or hoping to set up a blog. Tara had lots of tidbits to share on how to bridge the philosophical gap between creating what you love and feeling justified in profiting from it. Her lecture focused on what she calls the pillars of making money: Passion, Productivity and Profit. My big takeaway from her segment was that “you don’t sell stuff; you sell experiences.” The experience is the deeper meaning behind the thing (item for sale) itself.

I always liked tinkering with things but never thought of myself as very patient. When I met my best friend Jamie, she woke a sleeping beast..... She was a self taught crocheter and I recalled learning how to knit in middle school in Sweden. We discovered that the way I knew how to knit was different from the American way of knitting, but the results are the same, go figure!

When I moved from Colorado to Alabama in 2010, I figured it would be too hot to knit. I needed a new hobby. Someone suggested earrings but I just couldn't see myself capable of creating such small and delicate items. It just so happened I was in Michael's craft store one day and instead of going straight to the yarn section like I usually do, I took a detour through the bead aisle. Talk about sensory overload! I wanted to buy the whole store. I was so overwhelmed by all the pretty that I just walked away from it empty handed. I went home and did my research and once I knew what kind of materials, findings and beads to look for, I returned with a shopping list.

Now I enjoy making unique earrings that are comfortable and light (no one wants split earlobes, ladies. It just isn't cute)

I LOVE to travel and I have seen so many pretty places around the world. I draw inspiration for my earrings and knits from places, colors and impression of places I have been so that my buyer can bring a piece of the world home or wear it.

A mission component for those who are interested in knitting for a cause. We are asked to provide items for different charities and we hold an annual Sit & Knit where we get together for a morning to knit for a specific group or organization.

The Marketplace - for those who want to sell their items, we provide opportunities to participate in craft sales and shows. It is a way to get into the business side of knitting without too much of a financial impact.

Valentines emerged from lace doilies, and quilts from found cottons and silks. Over the years, before babies and between writing, I fell in love with card design, stained glass window making and mostly soaping. In 2010, I celebrated 10 years of handcrafting River Girls gentle soap and bath products--always colorful, kind to the earth and 100% vegetarian.

What does Pk have to say about herself?

I was born and raised in a sleepy little town called Hilo, on the Big Island of Hawaii, smack right in the middle of the Pacific ocean. Stone & Bone, is my love child. Everyone who knows me, knows that creating beautiful handmade jewelry and painting Hawaii’s beautiful landscape is my passion. Since I've been doing this for as long as I can remember.

My idea of all things handmade comes with a purpose, as well as practicality. If not, well, why do it. I'm most excited about designing wire wrapped and bead embroidered ethnic jewelry and accessories for both men and women, as well as making old vintage jewelry fashionable again. Creating anything with up-cycled discarded items, gives me such a creative rush. It pushes and challenges the artist craftsman to rethink, reestablish, and most of all really get inspired about the world around me, especially due to the fact that I believe in being eco friendly and going green in whatever way possible.

I also love the many native cultures that make me who I am, so I use nature as well as native tribal heritage to inspire and lend to my pieces. Knowing everything has a story, everything comes from the source, and there's no separating that, gives me a sense of pure joy to be apart of life’s magic evolution.

Stone & Bone, http://www.stoneandbone.etsy.com is pure essence to me, I love bridging the past with the future, native style with urban panache, which birthed a style all it's own, I like to call it Tribal Chic. I myself love to mix and match trends, styles, and cultures, borrowing from her, taking from there, and who knows what I'll come up with next. All I do know is I'm truly having fun doing it., and meeting a lot of wonderful people in the process.

Creativity, I cannot live without. I love all things beautiful and the visual and performing arts. And most of all I love love...

I was taught crochet at the age of eight by my grandma who is my creative foundation. I love her! By eleven, I was sketching and designing women's clothing and hand sewing by twelve. I continued with my fashion studies all the way through school and into college where I double majored in fashion design and fashion marketing.

I officially opened the doors of my shop to the online community in 2007 and I have not looked back!

Since that time I've learned knitting,jewelry assembly and design and am continuing to learn and grow from amazing artisans from all over the world!

Raghouse International's mission is to finally put the rest the bad reputation that crochet has had from its birth. In the early years of this art form, crochet was know as a poor man's craft, bulky, ugly to wear, not comparable to knitting, but the past ten years have changed this and revolutionized the craft. Crochet and even knitwear in general have pushed their way to the forefront of the fashion industry and because I am so passionate about texture, I create every piece with texture in mind. I don't see crochet or knit, but feel, mood, and style. I hope you see it too!

I started dabbling in candle-making in 1998 for my love of candles but frustration for not finding quality candles I wanted to accent my new apartment. To this day my mom still has the first candle I made out of a sour cream cup. Hopefully you feel my candles have progressed since then :-)

None of our candles are mass produced like department store candles that could be on the shelves for months. Almost all are made fresh to order. Therefore, no two candles look exactly alike.

All of our candles are lead-free!! We currently have over 650 candle scents to choose from with new scents coming in regularly. Our small American company has the big candle factory feel with the ability of creating thousands of candle styles, scents and colors variations, yet still maintaining our personal touch with our customers by making one candle at a time. For sensitive noses, we can make unscented candles, and bath & body products so all can enjoy. For the green, vegan or environmentally conscious, we have a line of natural wax candles as well as many natural ingredients in several of our bath & body items.

My mother tells me I have been pursuing business since I was a young girl. I grew up in Philadelphia, PA with many creative, cultural and entrepreneurial influences. In high school I took advance placement biology and my teacher encouraged me to be a nurse or a pharmacist. I earned a B.S.N. with honors from Temple University. Holistic healing, aromatherapy and wellness intrigued me so I read as many books as I could find. Maybe it what I learned about the mind, body, spirit connect that led me to create nourishing aromatic body care, my first Indigofera collection.

I loved to joy of blending exotic butter, moisture rich oils, uplifting essential oils and fragrant herbs. My clients loved it too! I'm Ella but you can call me Little Curly, Little Curly was my childhood name (used only by my lovely family, Ah! but my parents still call me Little Curly). So here I am - Little Curly:
Little Curly was born with natural curly hair and two round big eyes. She is a shy & innocence girl who enjoys watching Japanese cartoon after school and day-dreaming. Little Curly loves drawing and crafty, she loves to share all her artwork with family and friends.

What does Elisabeth have to say about herself?

Back in June of 2010 I became the official name behind Artistic Expressions by Elisabeth. I chose that name because I think it suits who I am as a person. I love so many different creative outlets that I can't choose just one. My expressions may come in the form of crochet, photography, cooking, crafting, sewing, and most recently, knitting. Let's also throw in there that I change my hairstyles quite frequently - another expression!

So what do you expect to find on this blog?

Food.

Fiber.

Photography.
