The two years since the launch of Earth Dreams Magic has been life-changing for me. After 10 years of research and writing, my Australian historical novel, Union Jack, was published by CopyRight Publishing (Brisbane) late 2011. I wrote my first book when I was eight; in my best running writing, in a brand new exercise book that I covered with brown paper and illustrated. I dreamt of how exciting it would be to have it published. Let me say that holding Union Jack in my hands is every bit as thrilling as I thought it would be when I was eight.

Lots of launches and parties ensued: Steven Lang did the honours in Maleny at Rosetta Books; Owen Doogan (Secretary, Rail Tram and Bus Union) set it on its merry way in Brisbane; I addressed the Friends of the Ipswich Library at their annual literary luncheon… many more, and more to come. Exciting times!

Now, I am busy researching and writing for Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service – preparing text and images for interpretive signage around SEQ. It keeps me on my toes, and is a steep learning curve, but nice to know my Environmental Science Degree was not for nothing. If you happen to be at Lake McKenzie on Fraser Island, check out the fantastic new signs. They are my work (with a little help from the QPWS team, of course).

Elsie Brimblecombe uses unusual texts to inspire her paintings.

“I like to read the chosen piece many times and then meditate upon it before I begin to paint. I don’t see my paintings as illustrations but rather a bouncing off from a text in whatever way it pleases me”.

“In 2009 I used “Invisible Cities” by Italo Calvino. This small fabulous post-modern work led me to paint fifty seven canvases.

Each city in Calvino’s book seems to undergo constant deformation despite the almost chaotic enumeration of it’s features. The end result is that the city’s image is vague and unclear. I liked this ambiguity, it’s open-endedness and felt I could explore the impression of it in my own way.

ZIRMA (below) includes memories of many black people, lunatics, girls with pumas, dirigibles flying in all directions and undergroung trains.

Grant Meyer is a local photographer who has a gift for making photos tell a story. These are just some of them:

“While working with Barung Landcare, one of the places we worked at was the Book Farm out at Reesville. At smoko and lunch we would sit in an open rustic cabin and enjoy the surroundings – The rustic remnants created by man can sometimes be just as appealing as the beauty nature creates”

“Forest Elder. At first when I took this photo I didn’t notice the face. Upon viewing the shot after work I noticed him looking right at me; I see and Indigenous Elder keeping an eye on the land, making sure we are looking after it.”

“The Platypus. One wonders how these unusual creatures were created but to see them in rivers and dams will always be rewarding to me; from Maleny through to the Obi Obi Valley they are thriving!”

“I believe I don’t have to go looking for it – nature just seems to come to me.”

As an artist, I create the mood and the poetry through minimal strokes of the brush. I paint the essential simplified form to portray what I want to say.

Less is more.

I am really enjoying the journey. Through mastery of her chosen medium and impressionistic style, Diane creates mystery and intrigue that invites speculation about the subject matter. Diane has won many awards, including the St George’s Award (Champion) 2008 and First in Watercolour 2009, Maleny Art Awards. The success of her classes and workshops in Maleny has encouraged Diane to broaden her horizons by offering tutored painting workshops in Australia and overseas.

This is a great place to stop and take a
break and learn more about the fascinating
past of the Glasshouse Mountains. From the
Steve Irwin Way, head into the actual small
town of Glasshouse Mountains, on the left
heading north.
Definitely in the present is an ultra-modern
visitor centre in the Rotary Settlers Park,
which provides visitors with some brand
new interpretative information about the
area. The eco-designed building has its own
water tanks and a water saving garden. In an
Australian first, a three-kilowatt sliver-cell solar
system is fitted to the roof for optimal power
generation.
However, history is never far away in these
famous heartlands. Take the Old Gympie
Road to Landsborough and travel back into
the past.
