Building a Craft Sewing Room in Our RV

We live Full Time in a Fifth Wheel Toy Hauler RV, which makes crafting a challenge, we finally came up with a great solution!

This is how we converted our Toy Hauler Garage into an office space crafting area and sun room.

After removing the NSF shelving that held our business, (a Kitchen Under Canvas), for the past three years we were left with a 14 foot by 8 foot area.

Thankfully, we had taken the time when we had built the shelving, to line the walls with Masonite to protect the walls from our cargo shifting while in transit, which we now set about taking off the walls to reveal windows and allowing us to open the pass through door between the living quarters and the garage.

Once the Masonite was removed I gave the rubber diamond plate flooring a good scrubbing down. It was a challenge, but having a washable rugged surface had served us well and would also serve us well when we started making a mess while crafting.

Note the large roll down screen at the back ramp entrance, we played with the idea of leaving the back open so we could use the ramp as a deck, (see ramp as deck in picture 3), but in the end we decided to close off the back door to make room for more storage type furniture to hide all of our crafting tools and supplies.

Picture 3 shows the initial layout of the main crafting table on the left making the most use of the usable space and still keeping the side screen door accessible.

We played with various layouts until we came up with picture 4. I went on Craigslist and found the wicker dresser and wardrobe for $60, they threw in a twin sized bed and a large dresser mirror to boot.

I re listed the mirror on craigslist for $25 and we used the bed in our new cargo fifth wheel in the loft for us to sleep on when we needed it on the road.

I used a plastic kitchen table for my crafting desk temporarily, I was stunned at how much crafting tables and sewing tables were going for, even on the net. No way was I going to pay three hundred dollars for a particle board table with drawers, I had to find another solution.

The plan called for two crafting areas actually, a crafting desk to make jewelry and to work on watches and also a crafting table that I could lay out leather or material on for patterning and also a place to set up my sewing head.

We found the best of both world in a drop leaf dining table I found on Craigslist for $65, that was solid cherry wood and had the ability to fold down when not in use, or fold out when laying out projects.

Below we have the finished area, we added a lighted bamboo lighted showcase for $70, it has storage below and was a bit frivolous, but it looked perfect for our area and we just had to add it. Doyle's Dobsonian Telescope takes up the back left corner, it acts as a futuristic piece of sculpture in between star scanning sessions. I had the suitcases on top of the wardrobe for ages and they fit the space perfectly, I also dug out my antique wind up mantle clock I have had for 40 years and set it ticking and chiming away on the wicker dresser. The large mirror is temporary, it's on the net for sale and it just fits there for now. All of the other accessories I had in storage here and there in the rest of the RV, had fun digging them out and putting them to use, including the cute little shell lamp on the dresser.

Finished Room. It's wonderful to have an area I can work and enjoy myself in!

Here is the empty garage before removing the masonite and scrubbing the floor, seriously, this is a lot of room to work with!

I have to admit I toyed with the idea of keeping it a garage and keeping a golf cart in it, but we decided we would be better off with more living space and crafting area.

After removing the masonite we were able to open up the pass through door that had been sealed shut since the day we had bought our Road Warrior three years ago.

Also, I have to say I got a big kick out of the BIG windows that Heartland was wise enough to install giving us lots of light and a great view!

Note the open cabinet next to the door, it's all wired up for a flat screen TV, which we will be adding later...to the right of that is a large storage cabinet that we had removed the doors of so the shelving would fit flush against the bulk head. These will be added back on when we get our storage moved down from Wisconsin.

Also the blinds for the windows and other sundry hardware are languishing up north in storage for the time being, so I'm not going to worry about window treatments for now, just having the space re purposed is good enough for me for now!

Next is a picture of a "Trial Fitting" of various furniture configurations using spare furniture we had on hand. We jocking these items around a few times to get a good feel of the flow and usefulness of various items.

Finally we came up with this layout, I found a 70's black lacquer and brass office desk for $50 on Craigslist that features a plate glass top and a velvet swivel rocking desk chair. So instead of paying $300 for a generic, sterile crafting cube with no seating, I have a very stylish desk with plenty of drawer storage for tools and supplies that has a classy look that ties in the black theme of the living area through the door nicely.

The cherry wood table also matches the cabinetry of the entire trailer, which is also solid Cherry. Very classy. The two white wicker swivel chairs were a leftover from another plan we had for our screen house in the yard, they were great placeholders for now, I have thrown them on the net for what I paid for them and they will be replaced by the backless saddle stools you can see stashed under the table for now, they will be more practical and save space, I paid $5 bucks for the set of three.

When I have my sewing head set up on the drop leaf table I will just roll my desk chair over to use when I am doing intensive sewing projects, otherwise the stools will be fine for those small, short lived projects.

What's also nice about this layout is that my husband Doyle will be able to utilize the drop leaf table for his projects also, he prefers to work outside since most of his shell carving involves dust and such, but for the finer and more delicate carving on rainy days, he will be able to use this area without interfering with my jewelry making, etc.

This are also makes a great sun room, we find ourselves gravitating to this area in the morning for our am coffee, it's open, airy look and the ability to open windows and doors to let the breeze play through make this the ideal four season room in Florida.

So Crafty Folks, this is why a Toy Hauler can be a Crafter's best friend, not all garages have to have "Toys" in them. you can make it the best living space in your house!

Making Good Jewelry Even Better...Remaking an Boring Piece for Etsy

The Remade Piece, a real showstopper and a more cutting edge design!

Left is pictured another example of a piece of jewelry that just wasn't doing well on Etsy...in a word, it was BORING. It was simple and elegant, but not unlike many thousands of other pieces offered by other sellers for much less.

So, back to the drawing board, I took it apart and redesigned the cocktail length into a more choker or bib type, then added the graduated pieces as charms instead of to the single length.

Back to the Design Drawing Board!

Here is the necklace placed on the form for adding the final wire wrapped shell drops, having the necklace on the form helps you judge length and fullness of your dandle drop charm design, as well as making it easier to see if you are getting the design even on both sides.

Balance is all important in designing a necklace like this, if you put too many pieces on one side, it may look OK, but the necklace will be constantly sifting to the heavier side, making of a very unhappy wearing experience.

A matching charm bracelet!

Since I had some extra components laying around I thought I would add a matching bracelet and set of earrings to complete the look

After all, this is a very original and unique piece, it would be very hard to accessorize and you may loose a sale because a customer has nothing to wear with it to coordinate.

I always list my matching components separately so they are an option and may very well be and extra sale, this way the customer has choice and I have more variety and options in my listings.

And... of course, earrings!

If you have a piece that isn't moving and is looking rather dated, rewriting the description and tags as well as re listing helps, but sometimes you just have to admit this piece is just going no where and it has to be redone.

You also will have learned a thing or two about making jewelry and the latest trends, so don't be afraid to give that old piece a new shine by taking it apart and giving it a new lease on life!

She Blinded me with Science! I guess you can now say I have gone nuts for wire wrapping! This is my crowning achievement, lots of gold tone copper wire spiraling all over the place and my favorite Big Blue wood Bead!

Tribal Buffalo Bison Tooth Necklace Tribal Ethnic Jewelry with Pipe Stone

Guess who's been wire wrapping again? I can't get enough of wrapping things with wire, especially 20 gauge copper wire, as it is so easy to form, yet it stiffens up with use.

I'm really happy with this Buffalo Tooth Pendant, it has Catlinite Pipe stone accent beads as well as brass beads for a real sharp, simple look.

Tribal Gemstone Necklace Pink Jasper Moss Green Ovals with Cheyanne Pink Trade Seed Beads

Here's a Tribal Designed Necklace I like to Call "Tribal Fashion Forward".

I features authentic Cheyenne Pink White Heart Seed Beads in size 9 and 10, Moss Jasper, Labradorite and Jade in a spectacular mix sure to impress! I then added one strand of foil lined tube seed beads for just a touch of shine and glitter.

I used a stiffer beading wire so the beads lay in a circular pattern reminiscent of African tribal collars adding even more interest.

Anyone who loves old tribal colors will enjoy this retro look brought forward!

This was so much fun to make, reminded me of all the pretty beaded items I used to make with my Mom and Grandmother when I was a child. It's great to be working in this medium again and I look forward to more seed bead projects!

Moss Jasper is probably my favorite gemstone as I used to pick rocks on the shores of Lake Superior as a child and Moss Jasper was among the many beautiful stones I used to collect.

Sold Buffalo Tooth Necklace

I created a beautiful Chieftan Collar from Buffalo Bison Teeth in July of this year that was not only well received, it recently sold leaving a big hole in my heart and jewelry case.

Not to worry, I had some beads set by and some white teeth that I also had also seen in my dreams so I stayed up all night to create my second Buffalo tooth necklace, I only hope it hangs around long enough to enjoy for a while!

I had some marvelous Graduated Turquoise I had found in an Old Traders shop this summer and some lovely original Baby Chief trade beads that just cried out to be included in this necklace, (at 2am, thank goodness I keep a notebook by the bed!).

I love the cool colors in contrast to the previous necklace, this one would look lovely on a Ladies neck, as well as a mans!

The Turquoise Nugget necklace is free floating in the center for added motion and appeal.

The Mother of Pearl heishi beads are the finest quality!

Creating a Unique Floral Design Wire Crochet Statement Necklace

This floral design one of a kind wire crochet statement necklace was all my Husbands fault. Bless his heart!

I sent him to the store to get me more 28 gauge silver jewelry wire to finish a the pearl and shell necklace I was finishing up. When he came home he was like a Kid with a bunch of wilted picked posies behind his back with the anouncement, "Look what I Found!"

To anyone who knows my husband, this could be anything from a dead porcupine to a bag full of money, which would be presented just as enthusiastically in either case.

I cautiously accepted the now outstretched twisted up bag and found to my pleasant surprise it was full of color coated copper wire.

I had never worked with this before so I was a bit puzzled as to what could be done with it, but after a few minutes I realized that with forty years of crochet under my belt I shouldn't have any problem figuring out what to do with this new found plunder.

I did a search or two for wire crochet jewelry and was a bit surprised that there was a lot of crochet jewelry being made with wire but it was not exactly evenly done, I gather the style is to crochet it loosely with a bead or two woven in here or there.

That wouldn't do for me so I just strung up some beads on a wire and began crocheting as I have always done, keeping gauge and tension in mind as with any piece I would do.

Being practical also, I could see there would be problems with the wire necklace holding it's shape so I topped it off with a nice leather cord around the top to stabilize it and add a bit of comfort to the wearer who doesn't like the feeling of a wire snare around their neck.

The flower was a good deal of fun, I just used the usual flower pattern for any quilt or throw you would crochet normally and used a bunch of wired beads for the center. I then wire wrapped a couple of leaf looking beads from the Ole Bead Stash, tacked them on and Voila! My first wire crochet necklace!

Etsy- What I Wish I Knew When I First Started Selling Stuff

When I first opened my Etsy Shop back in March of 2012 I was an official "Newbie" and I did everything wrong. In hopes of helping someone out who is just opening or considering opening a shop, I thought I would share a few things that I learned along the way that would have saved me a great deal of time.

What is Etsy?

Etsy is THE Largest Seller of Handmade items in the world. There are controversies over what defines handmade but essentially it allows sellers to list items in their shop that have been substantially created by the Artisan Him or Her self.

If you are planning on selling white postcards with one line of print on them you will probably not have a chance, but if you have a good handmade item that is easy to make and something other people would find desirable, Etsy is your Market Place.

Should you sell on Etsy? Why not! It's FREE and it just takes a bit of research before you are off and selling in no time!

Naming your Shop

When you are going to start a shop, think about your merchandise and try to name your shop something that relates to your products. I should have named my shop, "Sea Shell Treasures" or something along that line, but being I was not exactly sure what we would be selling, I chose a rather generic term that covered all situations. If I had it to do over again, I would have been more specific and may even start a new shop under a more specific name in the future.

The reason you want to do this is that Google uses your shop name in it's search data base, so if your shop is named "Joes Shoes" it will come up in google search every time someone searches for "Shoes". Google is a very important part of etsy, it's the way most people will find your products so you want to be google compliant.

Directly under the Shop name is your shop title, make sure your future sale items are described and listed here also in less that 90 characters.

Under this is your shop announcement. Many people use it to list sales and such, and that's fine, but it should also describe what it is you are selling once again and what makes it special. These three items are the first thing everyone is going to see when they come to your store. Tell them what you have and why it's unique to you without getting into story telling...save that for your "Profile" and your "About Me" Page. Google also uses this info for it's searches so use some keywords, even repeating words from your store description and title to give special emphasis to the search engine.

Shop Banner

Do a search for Graphic Artists on Etsy for making a professional shop banner, or make it yourself if you know how, it is better to have no banner than a bad one! Some people go without the banner so their items are higher up on the page but it's up to you!

Profile Page

This is where you begin to tell your story of how you started out and a bit of back round on how special your products are because they are handmade by you, (or if you are doing Vintage, why you became a collector and why your collection is so important).

The following Online Lab videos are very important and the second one is quite long, but this is a very important part of your shop, you are up against over 10 million etsians and you need to be special to get their attention and loyalty.

This is new to Etsy and it is important, here's where you show pictures of your shop or process in creating items, it's the best way to showcase your process and show you are a legitimate Artisan. Be creative, short and to the point, include pictures of any and all contributors making the items yous sell.

Item Titles and Descriptions

The following Online Labs are more important than anything can say here, but I will add this, if you are trying to get seen in Google and Etsy Search, (and believe me, you are), you must use keywords in your title and description that accurately reflect what you are trying to sell so when a customer types in a search term, they get your item search result as opposed to ten million others sellers items.

In a nut shell, you have to name your item and initially describe it using keywords that will get customers to click on the thumbnail and enter your shop. You should try to say what your item is in the first three words so it is readable under the thumbnail in the title, such as "Big Red Shoes" or "Girls Blue Jumper", you should then go on to add a few keywords into the title such as "Girls Blue Jumper size 10-12 Floral knee length".

In your description you want to restate your title in the first line but mix up the order, perhaps adding a word or too. "Girls jumper size 10-12 blue floral knee length with pockets". This is very important for search engine optimization.

TIPS FOR IMPROVING YOUR RANKING IN SEARCH RESULTS

The best way to begin revising or evaluating your tags and titles is to start thinking like a shopper! Etsy’s most relevant search is built to connect shoppers with exactly what they want; so showing up at the front of the search results requires that your item (as defined by your tags and title) matches what a shopper types into the search box.

1. Put the most important keywords and phrases at the front of your titles. What are the most likely words and phrases that a customer would search for? Please see tips below for finding important keywords. Eg:
BEFORE: Lotus Blossom Pink and Yellow Children’s Dress.....
AFTER: Girls Dress - flowers....etc etc

2. Use a variety of strong keywords and phrases in your titles and tags, and vary what is at the front of the title (be sure to always use the most important keywords and phrases, though). Don’t name everything the same thing! Each listing is a chance for a buyer to find you, if you diversify your keywords you’ll be found by lots of different searches. For example, you might start off a few listing titles with each of your strong keywords or phrases, then use other great terms on other similar items in your shop. Eg:

Toddler Dress - etc etc

3. Use your most important, major search terms in your titles and tags. The top keywords found in your Shop Stats can help you find these. 4. Add more items to your shop on a regular basis! Remember, recency does play a role in search results sorted by relevancy to keep things fresh when shoppers use broad search terms that return thousands of results.

FINDING KEYWORDS AND PHRASES

1. Think about what a shopper would be searching for! What elements of your item would be most important to a shopper? What the item is, such as a necklace or hat, is often a great place to start. Try highlighting different aspects of the item...for example, if I’m looking for a painting for a specific space my living room, I may search by the size, colors or theme of the painting that I want. Try different types of terms and then check your Shop Stats to see what works.

2. Start typing what you sell in the search bar, with Handmade, Vintage or Supplies selected to find relevant search terms. Think of synonyms and try those as well!

3. Look in your descriptions to find keywords. Often you have some great ideas in there!

4. Brainstorm with others! They can often come up with terms you wouldn’t have though of. Ask people you know who would be in your target market, and ask other sellers on your Teams for ideas.

GENERAL TIPS FOR GETTING MORE VIEWS WITH SEARCH

Showing up in a search result is great, but ultimately you want the right buyer to click on your item listing.

1. All views are not created equal! Remember you want to connect your items with the right buyers, not hundreds of uninterested buyers. So keep it relevant. Comb through your item listings. Get rid of the tags that buyers probably aren’t using to find this particular item.

2. Take great photos, since they will get more clicks in search. See the photography articles in the Seller Handbook for tips: www.etsy.com/storque/seller-handbook/the-etsy-seller-handbook-all-o...

3. Don’t sound like a robot. Remember, showing up in search results isn’t everything. You’ll also need to connect with your buyer when they find your items, so don’t just fill your titles up with a string of keywords. Find the right balance that works for you.

Making Shell Flowers - Creating a Pearl and Shell Flower Necklace

I am very excited to have stumbled into a great new way to make Shell Flowers on my jewelry that is exciting and original to me!

I have decided to focus on neutral colored shell and pearl jewelry but in the course of creating such items I have found something I not only enjoy doing but am having great results.

It all started when I bought some quality wire and pearl pendants from my supplier, they were nice, but not really nice enough for what I had in mind.(See photo on left, pendants are upper right corner).

I was also looking at some other wired shell mother of pearl petal flowers from my supplier and while they have a good product they were not very well put together and looked as if they would be flimsy and flop around.

This is undesirable in my designs, I want to know that when the necklace comes off and goes in the drawer it will come out looking as good as it went in.

So I set about making my own flowers from MOP shells making them stronger and more desirable.

Putting the petals on a split ring

Wiring the petals so they are stable.

I wired the petals, slipped them on a ring and then wrapped the center of the petals in a wire spiral to keep them from flopping around.

I was so happy with the results I repurposed the purchased pendants by separating the center from the wired backing and then using the center of the flower on the front and the rest of the "foliage" was used as backing.

As you can see this makes a terrific flower!

NOTE: Some unscrupulous sellers on the net are using seller photos and listings from etsy on other sites claiming to be the makers and offering to make this item custom for you. Alibaba is notorious for doing this as well as many other sites.

While I have no objection to anyone using my processes to make jewelry similar to mine, (or I wouldn't post the tutorial), stealing pictures, descriptions and posting them as "ME" is wrong.

Always make sure if you are on a site that you are dealing with the REAL artist. Drop them a note, start a conversation and if it doesn't feel right or the price is extremely low, you are probably not dealing with the Original Artisan.

Real Designer Jewelry costs real money. I back every piece I sell, if for any reason you need repairs or are unhappy with a purchase, I will GLADLY do whatever I can to make it right.

After being fully stripped of her old tattered cloth covering, this dress form was cleaned and repaired to a fully functioning state, then sealed and stained with several layers of antique red and brown then highlighted with gold accents that make her look as if she is covered in buttery aged leather!

From Zero to Hero, Remaking a Sea Glass Tropical Choker Mother of Pearl Stick Beads Choker That Just Didin't Quite Cut It!

Sometimes you just have to admit defeat on a project and start over. From scratch. The necklace in the picture below was a case in point.

Sure, it looked good in theory but I made the mistake of wearing it for a day at the beach and it flopped all over the place and looked awful. I hate to admit it, being of an Artist temperament and all, but this one was a dog in practice.

The Hot Mess Itself - Bow Wow!

But what to do? It took me all of several months to come up with a design that would hold such necklaces in place properly, (I do love my bead fringes and dangle drops), but they are generally a pain in the butt to wear and not have them turn into a hot mess after a few minutes of wear.

I started by rethinking what was needed to hold elements in place, crochet seemed obvious but how to integrate two strands into the third crochet strand?

Well, I'm not giving up my secrets here, it took me many days of agonizing experiments to come up with something that would do the trick and still look good.

I've decide to make an entire line of this type of choker jewelry because it's design is authentic and new. It's just for those Gals who love their dangle beads and fringe look but don't want things sticking out all over the place at odd angles just because you bent over or breathed.

The moral of all this is: Even if you have an item in your shop that has been up for months, don't be afraid to remake it into something new. I have done this with several of my pieces now, they are being favorited left and right and soon i expect some sales to discriminating buyers who know quality and a glad to pay for it.

Beautiful, but the ribbon speaks too loudly, off to the dye bath!

This is the beginning of a New Line of Jewelry I will be creating over the next several months, it features the best of crochet used to fortify and stabilize unusual combinations of shell elements that normally have a great deal of difficulty remaining in place when worn. By adding the crochet ribbon the two strands unify and the textile helps to "nestle" the beads into proper position with minimal movement, yet a limited freedom of motion still remains in motion.

This will allow me the freedom to add dangles and drops with abandon without worrying about them flipping all over the place while being worn or danced in, there is nothing worse at the Powwow than having to constantly adjust ones regalia!

Originally the ribbon was stark white but I felt it overwhelmed the design, so off the to dye bath of natural henna to tone it down and bring it back to matching instead of overpowering the piece!

I am sooo excited, i just made my first sale on Etsy and it was not only a custom order but an international one at that!

I really had to put my creative cap on for this one, I had to interpret a poem by Margaret Scott, famous Tasmanian Poet who wrote a wonderful poem about the beach, her poem is available to read HERE.

I really related to this poem as my favorite hours are spent on the beach so it was not to difficult to put something together that expressed my love of beach combing.

Happily, my Client agreed with my interpretation and happily spent the money to receive this gift from the sea!

This is my first custom order and it was a tremendous challenge making something from a beautiful poem. I have just started to work in quality Freshwater pearls combined with crochet ribbon and the results have surprised even me at the romantic soft look the two combined create.
