Ladies and gentlemen, start your griddles. The Grilled Cheese Society (no joke) hosts its second annual regional competition, with the winner earning a trip to the Grilled Cheese Nationals (again, no joke) in L.A. on April 25. The audience judges the competition. There are four categories: The Missionary Position (standard sammy in every way), The Kama Sutra (anything goes with cheese, butter, bread, and additional ingredients), The Honey Pot (like the Kama Sutra but with a sweet, dessert angle), and the Lambada (basically, a quesadilla, a category special to Austin and won’t be in the nationals). Now, we don’t know about you, but this altogether way too cheesey to pass up. You hold the fate of best grilled cheese in Texas. Harness your power! Held at Austin Moose Lodge (2103 E.M. Who are The Visitations, and why might you care? If you've got any stock in the southern pop renaissance of Elephant Six, you'll probably want to find out. Unlike the myriad of bands that get compared to the trashy/beautiful output of Elephant Six associated bands like Neutral Milk Hotel and of Montreal, The Visitations aren't sound-alikes but actually Athens-based contemporaries, and lead man Davey Wrathgabar has performed previously in Elf Power and Fablefactory.

On the band's third release The Conundrum Tree, Wrathgabar takes a cynical but equally fun approach to lyricism and melody, steering his band closer to associated act 63 Crayons and their brand of political satire than the cheery output of many other Athens-dwelling groups. Out on Orange Twin records, this new album features contributions from Derek Almstead of (and formerly of) too many bands to mention (Elf Power, of Montreal, The Instruments, etc.) and Jason NeSmith of Casper and the Cookies.

Performing with The Visitations are two Austin acts, Plutonium Farmers and His Astroturban. Experimental trio the Plutonium Farmers have a regular slot at The Moose Lodge on Monday nights, and their weirdness expands here for the headlining slot. His Astroturban, who open the show, is the stage name for Sean McCarrey and friends. We've seen McCarrey perform with Marcus Rubio in the past, and his own recording project sounds entrancing enough to warrant an early arrival to The Salvage Vanguard.
