Animal Parts Anyone? At Kaohsiung Liuhe Night Market - PH

Night markets are a hallmark of Taiwanese culture and the best way to experience it is to try the vendor food. In Kaohsiung, the Liuhe Night Market (六合夜市) is the oldest and biggest, frequented by locals and busloads of tourists. :O

I'm gonna start with the unusual snacks at this night market, then the popular ones in my next post. :)

yummy braised pig trotters with braised pig blood cubes, tofu....

The Taiwanese loves anything that's braised. I love braised food too. At the Liuhe Night Market, one finds many vendors selling braised animal and poultry parts, almost every part of the pig, duck or chocken can be braised. Even tofu, pig's blood cubes and eggs are braised.

This Granny is doing a roaring business selling her yummy braised food. Not only do the locals love it, the Chinese tourists bought the braised items to go with their beer.

Highly sought after braised duck's tongues, I don't fancy this.

Need to nourish your brain (补脑)? Have a bowl of pig's brain soup. :D

Animal organs are legally sold here. :D They are valued for their nutritious properties.
Don't ask me if they do work, I don't eat organs.

I cannot imagine how huge this deep sea monster grouper was, but it must have lived quite long to grow to this size. And they caught and eat it. Poor fish.

This BBQ stall has a constant long queue. Each stick of BBQ bits is brushed with their specially marinated sauces and sold from NT10 (Singapore 50 cents). You can choose from chicken thigh, wings, breasts, necks, feet, heads, pork, beef etc....

The Taiwanese named the chicken butts "7-mile fragrant" (七里香). I find nothing fragrant about it because I have not mustered the courage to try that, yet. :P They are very popular in this night market.

I heard so much about this mullet gizzard (烏魚子) that I simply must try it. I paid NT50 for a small bite. Hubby almost puke after taking a tiny bite. I bravely chewed and swallowed the rest. Don't like it - it has an extremely strong fishy taste. Too strong for us. >_<

Bullet Train (THSR) to Kaohsiung

Recently, I accompanied my husband on a trip to Taiwan. Upon arrival at the Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport, we took a shuttle bus to the High Speed Rail (HSR) at Taoyuan station (高鐵桃園站). It was only 20 minutes by bus.

It was a cool day with temperature around 15 degree Celsius, a great difference from our hot and humid weather in Singapore. Love the cool weather!

With the Taiwan High Speed Rail (HSR) system, Taiwan’s public transportation system has taken a leap forward. It tremendously shortened the travel time between various cities and regions. I rarely have the chance to travel by train for long distances in Singapore, in order to have a memorable journey I simply follow the locals - buy a drink and a snack from the mobile snack cart lady. Oh, and I did forget to get a lunchbox (火车便当) ;)

The bullet train was travelling at a speed around 300km/h. Kaohsiung is 345km (220 mile) from Taipei. We reached Kaohsiung in an hour plus. The HSR is amazingly fast, affordable and comfortable.

Passing towns and cities as we travel 345km (220 mile) on the high-speed line between Taipei and Kaohsiung.

Kaohsiung city, its amazingly clean and the roads have lesser traffic compared to Taipei. The weather's warmer in Kaohsiung though.

Time to look for food!!! :D

My Son's Lumbar Microdisectomy Surgery

My son Jaymes has been living with pain and numbness in his legs for some time. He was sent to ER at Singapore General Hospital four times during the last quarter of 2011. Each time the doctors would prescribed him painkillers and sent him home.

He is serving his National Service (2 years of compulsory military service for young Singaporean men 18 and above) and the doctors thought he was faking his illness.

He was taking painkillers daily for 4 months until finally an MRI was ordered. Dr Guo Chang Ming (Senior Consultant, Spine Service, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Singapore General Hospital) immediately ordered a lumbar microdiscectomy surgery upon seeing the MRI results.

Jaymes was experiencing pain because the disc kept pressing on the affected nerve. He has been limping for the past few months. If untreated, he may become paralysis.

Dr Guo said it was one of the worse cases of slipped discs he has seen. The surgery aims to cut away the piece of the disc that bulges out and by using this new keyhole surgery, recovery will be faster.

Jaymes was operated on 4th January and is recovering well.

He is warded at Ward 76 and is actually enjoying his stay in a hospital! Several of the nurses at this ward are young, pretty and helpful. After 24 hours of fasting, Jaymes first request was a McDonald's fillet burger. And the sweet nurses helped him call for delivery. o_o

Seeing my son's quick recovery and the good service at SGH, my hubby wants to have his slipped disc surgery done too. -_-'"

Marina Bay Singapore New Year Countdown 2012

Happy 2012!!

I chose to usher in the new year with my family at home instead of spending it in a crowded venue. After a sumptious dinner, our early new year countdown started with the explosive Sydney's fireworks as we sat down in front of the TV.

Across the world, revellers were celebrating the end of 2011 and the start of 2012 with spectacular fireworks displays which lit up the night skies.

At the Singapore Marina Bay Countdown 2012, a dazzling fireworks display attracted thousands of people who clamoured to see the impressive display.

Thanks to cable TV, we were able to watch new year celebrations in the various cities of China and Taiwan.

It was heartwarming to see Taiwan's First Lady Christine Chow Mei Ching displaying a drum performance in a new year show before the countdown. She is one cool lady.

The spectacular fireworks show at Taipei 101, Taiwan's tallest building and the world's second tallest, lasted 202 seconds at a cost of NT$30 million (US$991,380)!

I was glad I didn't join in the celebrations in town. Several friends and my son were stuck in the massive jams after the countdown and didn't get to return home until almost 4 am. I was sleeping soundly in my cosy bed. :D

Tropical Christmas @Singapore - RT

Over the long Christmas holidays, I have visitors from Harbin city (China) known for its bitterly cold winters. I brought the families to our popular tourist belt, Orchard Road where they had an enjoyable time shopping for luxury goods and trying a variety of international cuisines.

Every place we went, we had to queue and the queues were long We queued to buy branded goods, queued for a table in a restaurant, queued to pay for our purchaes.... etc. Exhausting!

There is a unique Christmas tree outside ION Orchard where visitors could climb up to its observation deck for a bird's eye view of the shopping belt. However, the long queue and the waiting time of an hour detered us from joining the queue.

Besides locals, there were many tourists who have come to shop or simply to soak in the festive atmosphere. We were bumping into people every where we turn. I don't like crowds but it was quite an experience celebrating Christmas with so many people! :)

The Christmas decoartions put up by the various shopping malls were very pretty. My guests took many beautiful pictures. The children were particularly happy because they received many presents and got to try a variety of food from countires around the world.

Enjoy the Christmas decor along Orchard Road before they are taken down to usher in the New Year.

Wishing Spheres - Countdown to 2012! - WW

Marina Bay, also known as the Bay of Hope and Light, will have 20,000 wishing spheres floating in its water. This spectacular visual arts display carries the hopes of over half a million people in Singapore.

Throughout December, people penned their wishes on these wishing spheres at various wishing stations located around Singapore. It's free-of-charge, no purchases is required.

The wishing spheres containing hand-written wishes were floated onto the waters of Marina Bay on 18th December. Finally, my hopes for the new year are floating among the 500,000 wishes on the beautiful bay.

I can't believe this year is coming to an end. I am looking forward to the annual Marina Bay Singapore Countdown taking place on New Year's Eve. Come join the party!

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Exhibition @Singapore

I was at The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands with several friends when we were attracted by the exhibits. We bought tickets (S$5 each) and was immediately transported into the magical world of Narnia. I was pretty upset when a staff informed me 'No phototaking' is allowed in the exhibition hall.Arrghhhh!

From now until 31st January 2012, visitors can tour the scenes from the famed literary world of Narnia. Based on the blockbuster hit movies and C.S. Lewis’ beloved fictional books, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Exhibition is here in Asia for the first time.

I was so thrilled to be inside the original walk-in wardrobe that started it all. I stayed inside the wardrobe for quite a while, admiring the fur coats hanging in it. The moment I walked through the wardrobe, a magical Narnia awaits me! How I wish I could take some photos!

Once inside Narnia, we viewed artifacts from C.S. Lewis' personal study, original props and equipment from the three films. We like the replica of the White Witch's Throne where visitors can sit on the icy throne and feel the chill. At one interactive display, we learnt about the impact of climate change on our planet. It also investigates whether our planet could be frozen for 100 years, like the world of Narnia.

We had the opportunity to use a real working catapult similar to those used during medieval times as well as lift a real sword used in the filming of The Chronicles of Narnia.

I have watched the films of Narnia and absolutely love them. I am ecstatic for the opportunity to learn more about the world of Narnia and it's so cool to actually see the amazing props and costumes from the films. The designers are so brilliant and talented!

Lee Dong Wook & Kim Sun Ah 'Live' in Singapore - PH

I was presented with two tickets to meet Korean actor Lee Dong Wook and actress Kim Sun Ah 'Live' in Singapore. They were here to promote their TV series, "Scent of a Woman".

On 5th December, together with more than 200 screaming K-drama fans, I attended the Meet and Greet session with the two stars at Avalon Marina Bay Sands.

The fans and I queued for more than two hours in the sun before the organisers allowed us into the club. Although the fans consisted mostly young girls, several elderly ladies were in the crowd too.

The fans rushed to stand as close as possible to the stage once the door opened. I found myself a seat after checking out the place and lo and behold! Both stars were centimetres away from me when they made their grand entrance. Woot!

Fortunately I wasn't with the crowd on the dance floor, the screams of the fans were deafening. And they were screaming like every few minutes.:P

Lee Dong Wook is really very charming and Kim Sun Ah is an extremely witty lady. To thank the fans, both sang a duet. There was an 'NG' because they were laughing uncontrollably.

I watched the premiere of the TV romance series "Scent of a Woman" and like it immediately. It tells the story of Lee Yeon-jae (Kim Sun Ah) who finds out that she has cancer. With only six months to live, she tries to fulfill the things on her 'bucket list' before dying when she meets the handsome Kang Ji-wook (Lee Dong Wook). The two fall in love and I fall apart every time I watch their sad romance.

Both stars left for Malaysia the next day to continue their promotion of their TV series.

I have particpated regularly in the weekly PhotoHunt meme since 2007. I had fun and enjoyed reading the posts of my PH friends.

At the opening ceremony of Société Générale Private Banking 1st Rendezvous With French Cinema, iconic French actress Carole Bouquet led a delegation of French artists down the red carpet. Ms Carole Bouquet is internationally reknowned for her role as the Bond girl Melina Havelock in the 1981 movie, For Youe Eyes Only. She is also known for being the face of Chanel.

Earlier I had attended a media conference where Ms Bouquet and her artistic delegation fielded questions from journalists. Mr Olivier Gougeon, Regional CEO - Asia Pacific, Société Générale Private Banking and Mr Antoine de Clermont-Tonnerre, Chairman, uniFrance were preseent to promote the French Cinema to the Asian region.

With the screening of more foreign films in Singapore, as an avid movie fan I am delighted with the variety of choices. I learn about another country's culture and heritage from watching these movies. I see how people in different parts of the world live, work and love. :)

Another big plus is that for the past two weeks, I have been meeting famous foreign stars up close and personal on this tiny island!

red carpet gala premiere

It was a memorable gala premiere for me because I get to walk the red carpet which had great looking young men lined on both sides. Guests and I were 'blinded' when more than a dozens camera flashed into our eyes while we stopped to pose for photos on the red carpet. We felt like superstars! Cool!

The French artistic delegation

The opening movie was 'The Artist', a silent movie in black-and-white, by director Michel Hazanaicius. French actor Jean Dujardin won the Canne Film Festival's Best Actor Award for his performance.

It was weird watching a movie where there is no sound. But it is just as entertaining and captivating with several funny scenes. I was very impressed with the tap dancing of Jean Dujardin and actress Berenice Bejo.

I hope to catch another couple of movies before the festival ends.

Legoland Malaysia

I came to know of Legoland only five days ago,.when I received an invite to a media briefing. It was held in Iskandar, Johor. My first overseas blogging invite. Yeah!

Together with Straits Time reporter Lee Xin En and Bloomsberg journalist Joyce, we were chauffered across the 2nd Causeway. After clearing Malaysia Immigration, it was a 20-minute drive to the venue.

A tent was set up in the middle of the construction site. We met the Malaysian media comprising the press and TV stations.

Legoland Malaysia is the first Legoland theme park to open in Asia Pacific and the sixth in the world. Costing 720 million rinngit, the 76-acre theme park is specifically designed for families with children between 2-12 years of age. It will open at the end of year 2012.

So far, it is 40% completed. The steelworks for the iconic roller coaster ride called the Lego Technic Test Track was unveiled at this event.

Datuk Syed Mohamed Ibrahim (President/CEO Iskandar Investment Berhad), Mr Muhammad Zainnal Ashikin, the CEO of Iskandar Investment Berhad and Mr Siegfried Boerst (General Manager Legoland Malaysia) unveiled the steelworks.

Nearly all of the rides are hands-on, so families can push, pull, pedal, program, steer, squirt, splash, crawl, climb and build the way through a full day of non-stop fun. Quite unlike usual onslaught of colors, animation and pictures from Pads, video games and TV program, though they all have their merits.

There was a question and answer session with Mr Muhammad Zainnal Ashikin, the CEO of Iskandar Investment Berhad and Mr Siegfried Boerst, General Manager of Legoland Malaysia.

I was driven to the lookout point where I could see the unfinished theme park below me. In less than a year, I would be able to come for rides. I am so looking forward to it.

Singapore's Integration Community Learning Journey - RT/WW

On Sunday evening, I went on an Integration Community Learning Journey with a group of 40 residents comprising locals and several new immigrants.

From Mountbatten Community Centre, a coach sent us to Clarke Quay where we took a water taxi and cruised along the scenic Singapore River. Tour guide Joseph provided information and explained the historical heritage of the river to the group.

Although it was drizzling, the wet weather could not dampen the excitement of our group. Besides young parents who brought along their kids, there were two 3-generation families and several elderly couples.

This tour provided opportunities for new immigrants and locals to interact and communicate with one another, and improve their understanding of each other's culture, values and norms.

I was warmed several instances by the sweet gestures of these people who shared their snacks with me and sheltered me with their umbrellas as I clicked away with my camera in the rain.

The cruise along the Singapore River was an absolutely enjoyable journey. The scenic sights on both sides of the river yielded many beautiful pictures.

We had a quick stop at the Marina Bay City Gallery where interactive exhibits tell the story of Marina Bay's transformation from a busy trading port to the dazzling Singapore centrepiece it is today.

We have a bird's eye view of Marina Bay's intricate architecture and lush gardens over a digital state-of-the-art model.

A bento dinner was given to each of us and we had a picnic on the event plaza overlooking the beautiful Marina Bay.

There was a 45-minutte break for members to window shop in Marina Bay Sands Shopping Mall before the laser show started at 8pm. Unfortunately it started to rain and we had to watch the laser show from inside the mall. I will go back for this light and water outdoor spectacle another day.

Through this integration programme which lasted 4 hours and cost a mere S$2, the new Singapore citizens have an opportunity to mingle and interact with grassroots leaders and volunteers from their local community who share their experiences of living in a multi-racial and multi-religious society. They also learn how they can participate or volunteer in the community. Family members are encouraged to participate in the programmes offered to the new Singapore citizens, to make this learning journey meaningful for the entire family.

Monkey Ripped Off Tourist's Dress - PH

The Padangtegal Monkey Forest in Ubud, Bali, is a major tourist attraction due to the presence of the Balinese long-tailed macaques. The monkeys are notorious for boldly snatching fruit and shiny items like spectacles and hair clips off visitors.

My godson's branded spectacles was snatched and we had to pay 10,000RP to hire a local to get it back from the monkey.

Recently the monkeys became more famous. I heard that one of the monkeys ripped off the dress of a beautiful Taiwanese girl. arghhhhhhhh! Dirty monkey.

Mnet Asia Music Awards (MAMA) 2011 in Singapore - WW

The prestigious 2011 Mnet Asian Music Award (MAMA) was held in Singapore on 29 November, at Singapore Indoor Stadium.

What excited me most was seeing my idols, Superstars Lee Byung Hun and Song Seung Hun, in Singapore. *screams**screams*

Tickets for this massive awards ceremony were snapped up the moment they went on sale. My son is ill and could not attend this awesome event. His favourite K-pop stars are the nine-member girl group SNSD who won the Best Female Group Award and Best Artist of the Year

Many of the female stars are so pretty. We ladies couldn't help admiring their beautiful dresses and gowns too. It was a star-studded, entertaining evening with so many popular stars descending on our little island.

Many fans waited for hours just to see their favourite stars. I hear stories of my friends' teenaged kids who hired cars and taxis to chase after their idols. I wish I were their age and could go along with them. haha......

National Day Awards Investiture 2011 - RT

My hubby Christopher was conferred the PBM (Pingat Bakti Masyarakat, Public Service Medal) by President Tony Tan at the National Day Awards Investiture 2011 held at the University Cultural Centre, NUS. It was President Tony Tan's first investiture ceremony. My son and I were invited to this gala event.

At this annual ceremony, Singaporeans and non-Singaporeans are honoured for their excellent contribution in the civil or military service,social and community work or for excellent performance in their fields.

There were at least 400 receipients at this ceremony. President Tony Tan has to shake each receipient's hand and smile for the camera for two hours.

The NDA has stringent criteria and an elaborate system of nomination and short-listing award winners. The process usually takes four to five months of nomination, consideration and approval by the President before the award winners are announced.

An elaborate system of nominations and short-listing award winners begins around February to April each year. Ministries,statutory boards and grassroots organisations make nominations for the awards. The government's personnel boards and ad hoc committees select the deserved recipients. The recommendations are submitted to the Cabinet for clearance and then sent to the President's office for final approval. The names of the winners are announced on 9 August.

Recipients of NDA receive a medal and a collar pin. The medal can be worn at national and important functions such as the National Day Parade, the Prime Minister's reception for private sector establishments and the launching of national campaigns, while the pin can be worn any time.

Prime Minister Lee Hisen Loong, Cabinet Ministers, members of the diplomatic corps and grassroots leaders were also present at the event. I had the honour of speaking with several of them.

It must be an exhausting night for our 71-year-old President. He was shaking hundreds of hands and smiling for hundreds of photo shots. Despite being on his feet for most of the evening, he has kind words for us and send his congratulations. Thank you Mr President!

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong

The most sought after man at this event. PM Lee didn't have a chance to grab a bite nor a drink because people were queuing to have a photo with him. He was most obliging, taking time to chit-chat and find out more about us.

Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean

DPM Teo Chee Hean stationed himself at the entrance of the hall and graciously posed for photos. Every request was met with a smile and a firm handshake.

Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong

Our ever-gracious ESM Goh is always ready to oblige with a photo. My son asked for a picture with him. He was very observant and concerned when he noticed that the cover of my son's iPhone was blocking the camera when Chris was taking the shot.

He asked twice if we needed to retake the picture. A check proved ESM Goh right. He posed for another photo with my son making him a very happy boy that night.

Law Minister K Shamugam and his lovely wife

Law Minister K Shamugam was extremly sweet that evening, it was because he has his lovely wife by his side. :)

National Development Minister, Khaw Boon Wan

Minister Khaw has been working extremely hard to solve the housing woes for the public since volunteering to take up this uphill task. Glad to see him in good health and looking fabulous.

Speaker of Parliament Michael Palmer

So happy to see Mr Palmer again. The perfect gentleman waved from afar when he saw us. He spoke with my son and gave him much encouragement on his future endeavours.

Health Minister Gan Kim Yong

Health Minister Gan Kim Yong always has a ready ear for feedback. I voiced my concern on the bed crunch at Singapore General Hospital as my son is still on painkillers for his backache as there is no bed available for a non-emergency case like his. I was requested to write in to him.

Deputy Prime Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam

DPM Tharman is the man to look forward to for next year's Budget. He is also Minister for Finance, known as God of Fortune to the common man. :) He distributes the country's wealth to the citizens when our economy is doing well.

Senior Counsel Alvin Yeo, MP Hong Kah Group Representative Constituency (Nanyang Division)

In January 2000, Mr Yeo became the youngest lawyer to be appointed Senior Counsel, Singapore's version of the Queen's Counsel. He caught my attention when he represented the Singapore Medical Council against a Singapore doctor who overcharged a Bruneian patient. I am awed by his brilliant arguments in the case.

Ho Ching, CEO of Temasek Holdings

Ms Ho Ching is also Mrs Lee, wife of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. She was looking on lovingly at her husband from the side because he was swarmed with requests for photos. She happily obliged for a photo when I asked and even waved my son over to have a picture together. She chit-chatted with us before someone else came up to ask for a photo with her.

Er Dr Lee Bee Wah, MP Nee Soon GRC

The triumphant President of the Singapore Table Tennis Association (STTA) is ecstatic with a haul of five gold, four silver medals from the recent SEA Games. She fought very hard to keep in her initial SEA Games lineup - young homegrown players Isabelle Li and Pang Xue Jie. Er Lee is very focus on her objective, to groom our homegrown players so they can hold their own on the stage of international sports.

To me, the medals are not as important as the chance to compete against the world's best and the experience our homegrown players could gain from it.

Congratulations to Er Lee and the Singapore Table Tennis team, we are proud of you!

The evening was an enjoyable one as we had the chance to mingle with our ministers, MPs and top policy makers to hear their thoughts and views on making Singapore a better place for everyone.

Special thanks must be given to the young men and women from the Singapore Police Force, MINDEF and Civil Defence. Looking extremely smart in their uniforms, they looked after us well and made sure we were comfortable and have an unforgettable evening.

Even the shuttle bus drivers from Comfort-Delgro were courteous and thoughful.

Bangkok, one of my favourite holiday destination, is still coping with the worst flooding in a half-century. The flooding began in late July and has killed several hundred people, mostly by drowning.

Several Thai friends came to Singapore to wait out the flood. Their houses and factories have been flooded for a month. They dread to assess whatever damage the flood has caused. I feel so sad for them.

I am fortunate that I do not have to face such a disaster. But I am worried about price increases on daily necessities. :(

Gardens By The Bay Preview - WW

In land scarce Singapore, it is incredible that 101 hectares of prime waterfront land is set aside to build a world class garden. Over the last five years, this spectacular garden has been gradually taking shape and on Tuesday I had a chance to preview it thanks to the 20th World Orchid Conference.

It was almost 3pm when I reached Gardens By the Bay and dark threatening clouds were looming in the sky. As I strolled along the Dragonfly Bridge towards the garden, many dragonflies were gleefully fluttering around me.

It has been ages since I saw a dragonfly in Singapore!

Many Singaporeans and tourists came for the preview. I did not buy a ticket (S$15 per adult) to the Flower Dome preview as I was meeting an overseas guest at Marina Bay Sands in an our.

I am truly impressed with the garden artistry despite that it is still under construction. I am looking forward to its opening day.

One key feature is the Heritage Gardens, comprising the Indian garden, the Chinese garden, the Malay Garden and the Colonial Garden. Visitors do not need tickets to enter the Heritage Gardens.

The Marina Bay Sands features prominently as the backdrop for many photographers' shots. Have to make a note in my diary to book a night at MBS and request for a room facing Gardens by the Bay when the attraction officially opens in June 2012. Yeah.

11.11.11 was an extremely busy day for me because I had to attend several wedding ceremonies. I wish I had the luxury to renew my wedding vow on this special day at a mass wedding ceremony but I had to attend other people's wedding. :)

These photos were taken at Singapore Flyer. For those who like a nostalgic feel on their special day, it is a good place to pose for some shots.

I have been hearing quite a number of Singaporeans complaining about the difficulty of finding a job these days. One day in October, I popped into the South East Community Development Council (SECDC) Career Centre to look for a job.

I was assigned Career Consultant Fazle who spent over an hour providing me with personalised career consultation services, i.e. one-to-one career consultation to help me in my career management. He was very patient and reassuring.

I was recommended to go for an ICDL (International Computer Driving Lesson) Certification Programme.

In this world of changes, there is no longer life-long employment but life-long employability. CDCs and the WDA (Workforce Development Agency) want to enhance the employability and competitiveness of Singaporeans in the workforce, from the young to old workers, from the rank-and-file to professionals, managers and executives. I am grateful for the subsidized training to ensure better employment for me.

Fazle sent me for Word Processing, Excel and Powerpoint Presentation training. Each module lasted 3 full days (8.30 am to 5.30 pm) per week. At the end of each module, there was an assessment test. I did pretty well for all the tests despite a rusty brain and the daydreaming in class. lol

For eligible candidates, each module which costs more than S$450 per candidate, is fully subsidized by the government and they also get a training allowance for the whole course. Well-off candidates pay a nominal fee for the training and do not get a training allowance.

The trainers are fully qualified, experienced and professional. It's not easy teaching a class of matured students who have varying standards of comprehension. The students were encouraged to help one another, matching the weaker ones with a fast learner.

We have two 15-minute breaks each day and refreshments were provided. We are truly thankful for the yummy snacks and hot beverages. What touches me most is two types of snacks were served each time and they were not repeated throughout our training.

You should see the delighted faces of some less well-off students as they consumed these snacks, which they probably cannot afford.

Having left school for many years, it takes a while for me to used to the "back-to-school" routine. I enjoyed my 3 weeks of training and am looking forward to attending more courses and meeting new friends.

Mediacorp Subaru Impreza WRX Challenge 2011 - PH

The MediaCorp Subaru Impreza WRX Challenge 2011 ended on 2nd November with Singaporean Sales Manager Chong Kiat Chi "outpalming" 399 contestants to drive away a Subaru Impreza WRX MT Hatchback worth S$92800 (without COE).

42-year-old Chong had his palm on the car for 75 hours and 36 minutes. It was his 6th attempt at this annual event. Congratulations to Chong Kiat Chi on his win!!

The contest which took place at Ngee Ann City Civic Plaza attracted hopeful contenders from Hong Kong, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, China, Indonesia, Vietnam and Taiwan.

The contestants got a 5-minute break every 6 hours to eat, go to the toilet, get a massage and clean up. Not everyone managed to do all that during that short time.

The weather wasn't kind at all, one moment it was scorching hot and the contestants needed a spray of water to cool down, but the next moment they were drenched to the skin due to heavy downpours. By the 2nd day of the contest, some of them were looking like zombies. :P

One particular contestant stood out from the rest. I salute Adam Kamis, the 32-year old one handed contestant. Kamis, who lost his arm in a bike accident in 2003, had to retire because of severe blisters on his hand. He told concerned fans that his skin was sticking to the car and when he pulled hard, blood gushed out. Ouch.

In the light of how tough this challenge has become year by year, I don't think I can outpalm anyone. I probably would end up a laughing stock for being the fastest to exit. LOL.... so I am going to give up trying.

An hour before midnight on Sunday, I joined the crowds witnessing the Thimithi Firewalking Festival at the Sri Mariamman Temple in South Bridge Road. Thousands of devotees and their supporters and tourists swarmed the brightly-lit temple.

The Hindu festival, which originated from Tamil Nadu, south India, is held in honour of the goddess Draupadi Amman, and is an expression of faith and penance.Thimithi has been practised in Singapore since 1840 in Sri Mariamman Temple, the largest and oldest Hindu temple here.

There were too many spectators so I was only allowed to take one photo of the firewalking when I was admitted into the temple grounds.

About 4,000 devotees took part in this annual Firewalking Festival, braving the heat by walking on a 4m-long fire pit of smouldering coal and sandalwood barefooted.

I was surprised at the number of non-Indians, several Chinese who walked the fire pit for the first time. The non-Indian devotees undergo the same preparation as their Indian counterparts: They observe a strict vegetarian diet, bathe to cleanse themselves before the firewalking.

Aren't they afraid of getting burnt by the hot coals? The Hindus devotees and priests believe that they will be burnt only if they are impure. After the fire walking is done, they walk through a pit of goat's milk.

I was not satisfied with one photo of the firewalking, so I tried ways and means to take more photos. Luckily I was able to take another shot by climbing up to the first floor of the temple.

I noticed that the devotees' feet were coated with a yellow powder after the ceremony. It was turmeric powder which is supposed to cool down the 'burning feet'.

I met Mr Rajan (far right in photo) who is an employee with Sengkang Town Council. He was participating in the firewalking with his friends. He has been doing it for the past 28 years, since the age of 17.

He told me that devotees have to fast for up to a month before the festival, taking vegetarian meals and giving up comforts such as footwear, beds and pillows to prepare themselves for the event.

Mr Rajan showed me the kanganam which consists of a coin, some turmeric and a sacred yellow thread tied to his wrists.

Supporters of the devotees can watch the live firewalking from TVs placed inside and outside the temple.

Shoes are not allowed inside the temple grounds, so we have to leave them at the gates. As parts of the roads were closed and our car was parked quite a distance away, it was weird running around the streets barefooted. :D

Supper for the hungry mass! Steam flat rice cakes with vegetarian curry. I didn't ask for some as I was too shy lah. :P

The festival attracted thousands, including supporters of the devotees and tourists.

Singapore values public safety and security. It believes in being prepared to face major disaster so as to ensure minimum disruption by any disaster to its community, environment and infrastructure.

Over 400 people took part in an emergency preparedness exercise to test the Circle Line's readiness for a large-scale emergency.

SMRT staff conducted a safety briefing to the public before the simulation began. The SMRT station and Operation Control Centre staff worked with officers from the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) and Singapore Police Force (SPF) to detrain and rescue the commuters trapped in the train following a fire. During the exercise, a train on fire stopped in the tunnel between the Circle Line's Nicoll Highway and Stadium Stations .

Passengers on board the train were evacuated through escape shafts to safe ground, where the injured are treated. This is the first time evacuation using an escape shaft was included as part of an SMRT emergency exercise.

No, I wasn't one of the "injured". Although it is less tiring to lie down and get bandaged but I was more interested to know the escape routes.

The public is regularly kept informed and reminded on the need for and importance of emergency preparedness through various communications tools e.g. news and press advertisements, posters, leaflets etc. The underlying message to the public is “Readiness is your only protection”.

The emergency exercise was an excellent opportunity for members of the public to test the effectiveness of SMRT and the various agencies' emergency response plans and procedures. They learn about safety procedures in a realistic setting.

In times of crisis and such situations, it is important for everybody to remain calm, and also to place their confidence and trust in the agencies that are collaborating in this effort.

Changing of Guards @ The Istana - WW

Every first Sunday evening of the month, a Changing of Guards Ceremony is held at the entrance of the Istana Building along Orchard Road. The Istana is the official residence and office of the President of Singapore

A platoon of 20 guards from Singapore Armed Forces Military Police Command would perform duties in the Istana for one month before another unit takes over. The take-over by a new unit is signified by the Changing of Guards Ceremony .

The in-coming Guards march from 268 Orchard Road to meet the out-going Guards at the main entrance of the Istana.

The format of the Ceremony is based on the British Changing of Guards Ceremony at Buckingham Palace, England. Thirty-six Guards and two Guard Commanders are involved in the Ceremony. The Guards are specially selected and trained for their turnout, bearing and drill.

The Changing of the Guards Ceremony is then carried out at the entrance of the Istana with military bands in attendance.

Included in the ceremony is a Rifle Precision Drill Performance. It was my first time watching this performance and I was awed by the flawless execution of these fine young men.

Many tourists and residents stopped to watch this ceremony. I met several locals with their families in tow came to know about this ceremony through the media. Armed with food, video recording equipment and cameras, they had come early to find a good spot. I'm going to bring my young nephews and have a picnic too. :)

The public is welcome to witness the ceremony.

My son loves the Entertainment Deck in Terminal 2 where free games, LAN Areas, music and console are available.

You might want to consider shopping ..... there are lots of interesting stores. :D

For those who prefer nature and want to experience Singapore's unpolluted air, visit the open-air rooftop Sunflower and Cactus Gardens. There are 6 gardens to choose from, my favourite is the world’s first Butterfly Garden in an airport. :)

Singapore Flyer illuminated in pink for BCA

The Singapore Flyer glowed pink for 2 1/2 hours on 1 October 2011. The First Lady of Singapore, Mrs Mary Tan helped illuminate it as part of Estee Lauder Companies' Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign. As one of Estee Lauder Companies' BCA Ambassadors, I rallied my husband and friends to give their support to this event.

Our Singapore Flyer was a pretty radiant pink, joining the ranks of approximately 200 global landmarks which have been illuminated through this initiative, including the Empire State Building in New York and the Taj Mahal in India.

In addition to the standard Pink Ribbon pin, there is a new Pink Ribbon wristlet which is the latest breast health awareness symbol, featuring a beautiful, single-knot tie that elasticizes to fit any wrist. Only a limited number of the Pink Wristlets were given out at the event on a first-come-first-serve basis.

Under her leadership, Mrs Yu-Foo Yee Shoon and her dedicated executive committee have come a long way, striving to raise awareness of breast cancer and encouraging women to go for screening regularly because early detection will enhance the changes of survival for patients.

The Illumination ceremony was hosted by Hossan Leong and Sharon Au, Christopher was the first to run up the stage during quiz time to answer a question. Actually, he just wanted to shake hands with Sharon. :D

After the illumination ceremony, Dr Esther Chuwa of KK Hospital gave instructions on self-examination for breast cancer to BCA Campaign Ambassadors in a specially decorated Singapore Flyer pod.

Breast cancer is curable if detected early

Estée Lauder Singapore presented a cheque of $32,500 to the Breast Cancer Foundation (BCF) to sponsor 500 needy women, aged 40 and above, for free mammograms. The program will be conducted jointly with National Health Group Diagnostics (NHGD) under a national subsidy programme 'Breast Screen Singapore'. Through this effort ELC hopes to educate them about breast cancer and the importance of early detection to increase the chance of recovery.
