Dre Biggity has quietly been a source of influence in the hip-hop scene for several years. When not on his grind furthering the presence of the UTB Life$tyle brand, he has patiently worked to polish his flow and cadences, finding himself ready to release his next project Cali Trill: The Art of Turnin 2 to 4. “Apollo” and “Axis” are both BatmanOnTheBeatz produced tracks, which he has selectively chosen to exhibit the signature style he has honed, easily adapting to two very different production sounds. On “Apollo”, Batman provides a slap, featuring a hypnotic synth, hard drums and well executed keyboard stabs. Although the production is intense, Dre Biggity’s smooth as butta flow works well in a way few rappers are capable of and is topped off with an appearance from singer D.Ant. With “Axis” Batman’s signature hard drums and bass are still in place, but the Erykah Badu sample allows the tempo to slow down a bit, combining to create a perfect canvas for Dre, as he effortlessly rips the track. “Apollo” and “Axis” might be his most refined tracks to date and between his self-leaked “Tsunami Report” and appearance on the UTB anthem “BetAMill”, the anticipation for Cali Trill continues to grow. Expect to see this man’s work reach your favorite blog in the near future, rather go ahead and BetAMill on it.

There are instances when the strength of a whole crew is fully displayed on one track, a perfect combination of fierce production and killer verses from each member. “BetAMill” is exactly one of these particular cuts. Production is handled by Soulection affiliate Bosstone, who provides a slapper that is sure to push people’s audio systems to their limit; taken full advantage of by the UTB Life$tyle crew, particularly Pheo., Cashius Green and Dre Biggity, each contributing a verse hard enough to match the intensity of the production, forcing you to acknowledge their arrival on the music scene. “BetAMill” was a saying first uttered by Pheo. on his track “Angelina’s Beamer”, meant to be interpreted as an exhibition of confidence, which guarantees the success of his UTB Life$tyle crew, success so certain, you could bet a cool mill on it.

Showing constant progression and the consistent crafting of a quality product can evidence the passion an artist has for their music. Pheo.’s passion has definitely shone, releasing 3 meticulously crafted projects over the span of 3 years, all revolving around his birth month of March. The release of Reali$m finds him as an artist who has now been a part of a national tour, as a member of The Smokers Club, had a release on a nationally recognized imprint in Mad Decent, as well as a recent appearance at the highly regarded Paid Dues Festival.

Pheo. and his unique flow have always exhibited the ability to morph in ways that match any production style, priding himself in the perfect blending of beat with rapper. The production choices on Reali$m further this line of thinking, featuring Soulection producers, Mr. Carmack, Lakim and Koen, along with a rare credit from Afta-1, J-Money, Alf Alpha, UTB Life$tyle’s BatmanOnTheBeatz and upcoming producer BrianFolk, among others. There are also vocal appearances from fellow crew member Cashius Green, SayKnowledge and Nikko Gray. Whether a soul loop based beat or a synth and bass heavy sound presents itself, on Reali$m, he allows each unique sound to guide his rhymes, giving concept and meaning to each track on the project. It is one, single line on the closing track that serves to best describe the feeling Pheo. hopes to evoke of the listener, as he rhymes, “Lose your training wheels / not your handle bars…”, the real essence of Reali$m; stay real to yourself, take risks, but be cautious not to lose your sense of self-guidance.

The Westside Artgoon Craig’s List Killer, Speak!, releases his first single, “Bulletproof Denali” off his upcoming Gnarly Davidson vs. The Marlboro Men album, which is now set to drop on the highly revered Alpha Pup label. Production is handled by M Mac, with mixing by Syd of Odd Future. Heavy guitar riffs dominate the track, accompanied by heavy drums and bass. Speak! delivers what might be his greatest hook to date, sure to stick in your head immediately following the first listen.

Made apparent by it’s trippy, psychedelic visuals, the music video draws inspiration from Jefferson Airplane and has Speak! looking like he would have fit right in with any of the heavy metal 70’s bands. The Zack Warren directed visual also features the “Hair God” backed by a full band, complete with a cameo from Matt Martians of Odd Future on the keys. With so many rappers trying to live that rockstar image, none of them truly embody this persona like Speak! does.

The first time I heard Cashius Green, who you might also know as Pastor Green or Best Money Makin’ Muhammad Ali, my initial thought was, these young kids are going to mess with this dude tough. His cadences, rhyme structures and slang were all on point. A half black, half Mexican emcee from Moreno Valley, CA with a voice that sounds like he could have easily been raised in places UGK and Three 6 Mafia call home.

Pisces is his newest project, a set of 10 recordings devised and dedicated specifically for the jawns. The production is heavily soul influenced, with hooks sung by Nikko Gray, Anjuli Stars and OOty OOT and features from Pheo, Big K.R.I.T and Frank Deux. Having been released 6 days ago, I’ve had a chance to keep it on constant rotation and have found each track to be memorable, with standouts being “Lovey Dovey”, featuring the always-sultry voice of Nikko Gray, “See You Cry” with an appearance from Pheo, who completely bodies his verse in a way only Blackman Magnificent can and “Catching Feelings” which is a heavily defined slapper.

The first impression one should have when listening to this Raider Klan posse cut, “Threatz”, is “this shit hard!” Featuring Raider Klan’s Yung Simmie and affiliate Robb Bank$, this track is set to appear on Denzel Curry’s upcoming album Nostalgic 64. The visual is directed by Unkle Luck & FXRBES, using an abandoned military base as a backdrop. Psychedelic colors and trippy effects are highlights, as each emcee comes through with an equally hard, aggressive verse over the slapper provided by producer Ronny J.

From production, to vocals (emceeing and singing), Yung Miss, out of Perris, CA, is fully capable of all three. I first came across her work through production credits for UTB Life$tyle’s Pheo and Cashius Green.  At 23 years old, she has been influenced by hip-hop artists of days past, crafting a mixtape paying homage to J Dilla, while staying intertwined with the sound of today, highlighted by the Never Go Broke remix, featuring DC ‘Trap’ rapper Fat Trel, which was recently featured by Billboard Magazine. As her wide ranging skills continue to evolve, be sure to hear more music from Yung Miss. I mean the woman can rap and sing all on her own production, a true rarity in today’s hip-hop scene. With his latest release BrianFolk’s aim is simple, to fulfill his need of putting out some enjoyable, quality music. Hence the title Everything EP, an accumulation of all the sounds he has been experimenting with for the past year. This EP does not limit itself to any particular genre, rather drawing influence from an assortment of electronic music scenes. Deep bass, layered synths, piano riffs and highly manipulated vocal samples are staples of the EP, while each track manages to carve out its own unique sound, creating a listening experience that conveys a wide range of musical emotions.

As resident DJ of the weekly Ladies Night party at the Hip Kitty in Claremont, CA, Gingee is known for her ability to get crowds moving, be it small or large. Her set’s are ever evolving, spanning from Trap, Dubstep, Hip-Hop to EDM, amongst others. This wide range of musical influences can definitely be heard on her latest instrumental release, Battle EP Vol. 1. The 5 track collection was originally performed at the Claremont, CA based Beat Cinema beat battle. While hard bass and rapid drums are a staple of each track, Gingee is able to manipulate the synth in a way which emits variances of all genres previously listed, but can best be designated as Moombah-Trap.
