Press Release: Emerson wins major automation contract for biopharmaceutical plant in Singapore

Emerson Process Management continues life sciences growth in Asia-Pacific

AUSTIN, TEXAS (May 26, 2009) - Emerson Process Management, a global process control and automation leader and a business of Emerson (NYSE: EMR), has been selected by Switzerland-based Lonza Group Ltd. to provide engineering and design services and digital automation architecture and control technologies for a new Lonza biopharmaceutical plant in Singapore.
The win is part of Emerson's growing portfolio of life sciences companies that rely on digital automation with predictive intelligence to reduce overall costs, improve reliability, ensure product quality, meet regulatory requirements, and optimize operations.

"Emerson has an excellent track record in managing and controlling the highly complex processes involved in the biopharmaceutical industry," said Steve Sonnenberg, president, Emerson Process Management. "This win is yet another example of how companies like Lonza can leverage our global resources and expertise to meet their objectives for safe, reliable, and on-time start-up of new manufacturing facilities."

In the Asia-Pacific region, Emerson also has been awarded automation contracts by Shanghai CP Guojian Pharmaceutical Co. Ltd. in China; Reliance Life Sciences, DSM Anti-Infectives India Ltd., and Biocon in India; and Lonza for a prior facility in Singapore.

Having installed the automation architecture in Lonza's first biopharmaceutical plant in Singapore, Emerson was chosen to implement its innovative PlantWeb® technologies in the new plant that is expected to be completed in 2010 at a cost of US$350 million. By following the original project models, employing best practices, and applying the experience gained during design and construction of the original facility, Emerson is expected to reduce Lonza's overall costs for the new plant.

Lonza will employ an array of Emerson products and services, including: PlantWeb digital automation architecture; DeltaV™ digital automation system; and intelligent digital devices, including Fisher® and Baumann™ control valves with FIELDVUE® digital valve controllers, Rosemount® flowmeters and analyzers, Micro Motion® Coriolis flowmeters, and Fisher pressure regulators.

Choosing a Wireless Network Provider? Look to a Standards-Based Solution

"Many of my peers at other companies say that I should deploy wireless technology in my facility. But with competing technologies, warring vendors, and a relatively new technology, I think the risks outweigh the benefits. I'm right, aren't I?"

Being among the leading companies to try new technology can be pretty scary. The opportunities for slip-ups normally abound. Emerson's own Neil Peterson tackled this issue in an article that appeared in Canadian Process Equipment & Control News February 2009 titled, "Choosing a Wireless Network Provider? Look to a Standards-Based Solution (661KB PDF)." Neil contends that choosing a solution based on published standards can reduce risks associated with new technology adoption. Standards based solutions normally have multi-vendor support, proven technology, and marketplace longevity. He also suggests working with a supplier that has demonstrated experience in that particular technology and is willing to take on a turnkey job can reduce the risks of having a smoothly operating, integrated solution. By making smart standards-based choices now, you can speed the benefits of wireless solutions and leave the risky experimentation to others.

Downturn a good time to review, improve process optimization

"The current economy has put more pressure than ever on everyone to show their individual value at our manufacturing location. I'm mostly involved in capital projects, but now they are few and far between. What can I do in this environment to show value?"

Current times are causing lots of folks to reexamine opportunities to demonstrate their unique contribution to their companies. Emerson's own Jim Cahill tackled this issue in a Plant Engineering magazine article titled, "Downturn a good time to review, improve process optimization (284KB PDF)." Jim provides a brief roadmap that automation professionals may use to improve their unit's performance. Some of the ideas mentioned require no capital investment and little time. The guy that can boost profits without requiring capital is bound to be popular during these times.

Austin, Texas (May 6, 2009) - Emerson Process Management announced today it has won a contract from Golar LNG to supply PlantWeb® digital automation architecture for basic process control and safety systems on the Golar Freeze, a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) vessel.

Currently an LNG carrier, the Golar Freeze will be converted into a floating terminal, and docked at a purpose-built jetty in the Jebel Ali Port near Dubai, UAE. Golar will operate the vessel. Dubai Supply Authority (Dusup) will operate the jetty and the high pressure export line into Dubai to supply needed gas during high energy demand months in the summer.

"Floating storage and regasification units are the ultimate example of reuse and innovation," said Tor Jahren, project manager of ship conversions for Golar. "We are looking forward to working side-by-side with Emerson Process Management on the vessel conversion as we trust they have knowledge of the onboard systems and the required capabilities in digital process automation."

Built in 1977, the Golar Freeze is only the fourth traditional LNG vessel to undergo a regasification conversion. Golar and Emerson engineering teams will work side-by-side in Norway on the execution of the project. Conversion is planned to begin in Q4 2009. The converted Golar Freeze will be capable of storing 125,000 cubic meters of LNG and delivering up to 480 MMSCFD (approximately 13.000.000 cubic meters per day) of regasified LNG to Dusup for delivery into the Dubai gas network.

"Golar is a leader in the FSRU market and will inevitably prove to be the innovators of tomorrow," said David Dunbar, president of Emerson Process Management Europe. "We are pleased that Emerson's advanced PlantWeb technology will play a vital role in the cost-effective and safe delivery of natural gas in Dubai."

The Golar Freeze will make use of Emerson's PlantWeb digital plant architecture for process control, power management, and safety instrumented systems. PlantWeb components in the mainstream process and power management systems include the DeltaV™ digital automation system, AMS® Suite predictive maintenance software, Fisher® control valves with FIELDVUE® digital valve controllers, and Rosemount® pressure, level and flow transmitters.

Components in Emerson's smart safety instrumented system (SIS) include the DeltaV SIS system, Fisher FIELDVUE SIS digital valve controllers for Fisher valves, and Rosemount SIS measurement instruments.

PlantWeb architecture has an extensive track record of ensuring a fast startup, lowering installation costs, controlling energy costs, and improving operations and maintenance.

Wärtsilä Corporation, an Emerson alliance partner, will replace the main switchboard on the vessel and in addition provide new 6kV and 440V switchboards for the regasification plant. Last year, the two companies expanded their alliance to deliver integrated energy and automation systems for Floating Production Storage and Offloading vessels.

Tolerable Risk

"I'm no safety expert but I don't want to look like I'm totally uninformed when talking about this stuff. What I need is a good place to get basic information. And don't tell me to go read the standards."

For many automation professionals the safety world seems littered with a bewildering array of new an somewhat unfamiliar concepts and acronyms like SIF, SIS, SLS, BPCS. The list seems endless. Fortunately, Emerson's own Mike Schmidt wrote an excellent summary of this topic for Chemical Engineering magazine in an article titled, "Tolerable Risk (175KB PDF)." Mike's description is an excellent place to look for practical, well laid out information. This article can give you a fair overview of the topic and includes worked-out examples of how to apply the specifics of risk determination.

Press Release: Emerson host system is registered as FOUNDATION™ Fieldbus Host

DeltaV™ system with AMS® Suite predictive maintenance software completes Foundation's new Host Profile Registration Process verifying robust interoperability

AUSTIN, TEXAS (April 30, 2009) - Emerson Process Management's DeltaV™ digital automation system with AMS® Suite: Intelligent Device Manager has passed the Host Profile Registration Process as part of the Fieldbus Foundation's new Host Registration Program. This registration process tests to ensure robust interoperability and integration between different manufacturers' host systems and devices.
The Foundation's testing process benefits both automation suppliers and end users by providing consistency in the multi-vendor FOUNDATION™ fieldbus environment. The DeltaV system with AMS Device Manager has passed the Host Registration Program (HRP) in which the Foundation conducts functional testing with a test device and specialized Device Descriptions (DDs) and Capabilities Files (CFs). The host profile must support this clear set of required features.

"We congratulate the Fieldbus Foundation for advancing its host testing into a complete registration program, and we are pleased that our DeltaV system with AMS Device Manager is one of the first registered hosts," said John Berra, chairman of Emerson Process Management. "Open, interoperability continues to be a clear win for our customers, and always part of our practice."

"The requirement of host registration, and the facilities and resources to carry it out will support further growth of Foundation technology," continued Berra. "As an example, the new registration includes host applications like our DeltaV system with AMS Suite that use enhanced Electronic Device Description Language (EDDL) to provide exceptional and consistent presentation of real-time, diagnostic, and asset management information as supported by all registered Foundation fieldbus products."

Integration

"Sure my boss says we'll integrate our ERP system and our control system and the data streams will flow and nearly magically we'll run our batches exactly as needed to meet our rapidly shifting demands. But that stuff just doesn't happen overnight and I'm the guy stuck trying to figure out how to make this work. Anyone have any pointers as to where I should start?"

Today manufacturers want to tightly integrate their ERP systems with their automation systems to reduce waste and increase manufacturing flexibility and responsiveness. Fortunately standards do exist to make these communications easier. Control magazine writer Dan Hebert tackles this topic in an article appropriately titled, "Integration (553KB PDF)." In the piece Dan Cox of AOC Resins discusses using OPC to avoid writing custom code for his integration between DeltaV system and his Oracle database. If you need to more tightly integrate your automation and ERP systems, this article can point to proven ways to make this happen.

Yes, Emerson, Too, Is In the MES market

"I didn't know that Emerson was in the MES marketplace."

This was the all-to-frequent comments by some customers and one editor, Stephanie Neil at Managing Automation magazine. After an interview with Emerson's own Bob Lenich, she wrote in a brief article titled, "Yes, Emerson, Too, Is In the MES market (58KB PDF)," that documented how Emerson is expanding into this arena based on the acquisition of DMI. Originally focused on life sciences applications this platform is now enhanced to address a broad array of industries. She at least will no longer be surprised when she hears about Emerson MES offerings. Read this article and you won't be either.

Practical Process Control: Tuning and Troubleshooting in the DeltaV Bookstore

Practical Process Control: Tuning and Troubleshooting by Cecil Smith is now available in the DeltaV Bookstore.

This book differs from others on the market in several respects. The focus of the book is actually troubleshooting, not tuning. Tuning difficulties are always symptoms of other problems; effective troubleshooting involves recognizing the clues, identifying the root cause of the problem, and making corrections.

Furthermore, most loops are rendered "untunable" due to some aspect of the steady-state behavior of the process. Consequently, the book focuses more on the relationship of process control to steady-state process characteristics than to dynamic process characteristics.

New HART for an Old Standard

"Heck Hart 5 works just fine. Why do you want to go and monkey around with it?"

Well the new HART 7 still works fine, it just works better. Control magazine's John Rezabek wrote a brief article on HART 7 titled "New HART for an Old Standard (158KB PDF)." He details some of the advantages of the new HART standard and shows how other end users are taking advantage of it. Included in the new standard are "wireless HART" and support for "autonomous alerts." Emerson's own Duncan Schleiss points out that the new alerts are akin to "device alerts" in Foundation fieldbus. If you want to better understand how to take advantage of this new standard a few minutes looking at this article may be an excellent place to start.

Users Get Out of Their COTS

"My automation system has to be able to share data with other networks. That said the fact that I've been relying on commercial off the shelf (COTS) hubs and switches for my communications may make me vulnerable to cyber attacks. Nothing has happened yet, but I could be headed for a day when bad-things-happen. I wish there were a way to get "automation tough" security without paying an arm-and-a-leg."

John Rezabek wrote a piece titled, "Users Get Out of Their COTS (218KB PDF)," where he describes his personal issues with this same situation. Fortunately, Emerson's own Duncan Schleiss came forward with a solution. Emerson is producing a COTS based switch that is purpose-built with security in mind in what may be a whole new category, "proprietary off-the-shelf." If you want to improve your systems isolation from the threats that can creep in through the network, this may be what you're looking for.

Slowly But Surely

"I need to buy and maintain a sampling system for my approved capital projects. I'm concerned that I'll wind up with a hodge-podge of independent and impossible to keep islands of automation over the long haul. What can I look to make sure this isn't a big headache for me down the road?"

A sampling standard is emerging that promises to help end users keep their sampling systems working over the long term. The New Sampling/Sensor Initiative (NeSSI) proposes to develop an interoperable standard for automated sampling. This emerging standard is described in a Control magazine article, "Slowly But Surely (224KB PDF)." Emerson's own Terry Blevins, a contributor to the piece, and suggests that the EDDL technology will speed vendors' ability to provide a critical interoperability and independence from automation systems themselves. If you are considering a sampling system purchase or integration, this piece may point to the best way forward.

Analysis, Synthesis and Design of Chemical Processes, 3rd edition in the DeltaV Bookstore

Analysis, Synthesis and Design of Chemical Processes, 3rd edition by Richard Turton, Richard C. Bailie, Wallace B. Whiting, and Joseph A. Shaeiwitz is now available in the DeltaV Bookstore.

Realistic from start to finish, this book moves readers beyond classroom exercises into open-ended, real-world process problem solving. The authors introduce integrated techniques for every facet of the discipline, from finance to operations, new plant design to existing process optimization.

This fully updated Third Edition presents entirely new problems at the end of every chapter. It also adds extensive coverage of batch process design, including realistic examples of equipment sizing for batch sequencing; batch scheduling for multi-product plants; improving production via intermediate storage and parallel equipment; and new optimization techniques specifically for batch processes.
