Press Release: Emerson's Smart Wireless network helps improve profitability and environmental compliance at Tecpetrol natural gas facilities in Argentina

Rosemount® wireless transmitters at three sites measure venting, deliver gas data for AGA3 calculations to balance plants, and data for fiscal accounting of sold gas

AUSTIN, TEXAS (November 4, 2009) -- Emerson Process Management's Smart Wireless solutions are improving profitability and environmental compliance for Tecpetrol by making new measurements at three of its natural gas compression and delivery facilities in Argentina.

Smart Wireless was the best and most cost-effective solution for Tecpetrol, which quickly needed to collect real-time gas flow data. The reliable, continuous data helps the company track gas venting, comply with environmental regulations, measure gas sold to third parties, and perform AGA3 calculations needed for economic balancing of its three facilities.

"The wireless applications saved us a total of $34,000 in installation costs compared to installing a wired solution, a 27 percent savings," said Odin Fernández, automation and energy head, Tecpetrol. "We preferred Smart Wireless because it's a secure, robust, self-organizing network. It's reliable and easy to install, expand, and use."

Ten each of Emerson's Rosemount® wireless pressure, DP, and temperature, transmitters are installed in the orifice plates at gas well heads across these facilities. The devices transmit data every 15 seconds to Smart Wireless Gateways installed at each facility that forward the data to the company's DeltaV™ digital automation system.

The wireless network monitors the gas balance of the treatment plants including dew point, primary separation, compression stages contracted, consumption and plant venting. Some of the data points tapped had never been monitored before. Other points had been checked manually by staff reading local gauges.

"We needed to closely watch our gas balance because excessive gas venting can impact our company's bottom line through lost product and because our gas venting levels must comply with environmental regulations," Fernández said.

Installation of the equipment took one day.The devices were easy to configure and have performed perfectly with no data loss since commissioning, despite these areas being heavily congested with pipes and equipment. Smart Wireless has eliminated the need for clipboard rounds.

"One of the advantages in using this equipment is that our process is very variable and involves piping modifications, compressor layouts and primary separation, among others," Fernández said. "We can move the measurement points when we need to and do not depend on pipes, cabling, etc."

Tecpetrol plans to expand its Smart Wireless use to include test measurements during well drilling.

In addition to the Smart Wireless solutions already installed at Tecpetrol, Emerson offers a wide range of wireless field instrumentation and plant operations equipment, including Fisher® position monitors, Rosemount analytical and Machinery Health™ Management devices, native wireless interface to AMS® Suite predictive maintenance software, and SmartStart™ Services.

For more information about Smart Wireless, visit www.EmersonProcess.com/SmartWireless, and for videos go to www.EmersonSmartWireless.com/Videos.

ARCview: Emerson Exchange Brings New Products and Innovation in Tough Times

"I've heard a lot about Emerson's new offerings promoted at the Emerson Exchange, but most of what I heard came from their guys via a set of PowerPoint slides. Just how much of this is fact and how much wishful thinking? What to other knowledgeable people think about all this new stuff?"

It is natural to be skeptical of messages from vendors, so it is a good idea to look elsewhere for thoughtful analysis of new product releases. One of the automation industry's most prominent group of analysts work for the ARC Advisory Group. Larry O'Brien, research director process automation, published his analysis of the Exchange event and said regarding Emerson's new CHARMS I/O, "They lift Emerson's PlantWeb digital architecture to new levels of project and operations performance." If you would like some third-party analysis of what happened at the 2009 Emerson Exchange you may want to scan through his complete report (201KB PDF).

Press Release: Emerson enhances DeltaV™ digital automation system with integrated machinery protection and prediction

The industry's most extensive integration of process and machinery health information enables plants to operate with confidence

AUSTIN, TEXAS (October 19, 2009) -- Emerson Process Management has integrated machinery protection and prediction of critical mechanical equipment with its DeltaV™ digital automation system. This new capability directly supports users' goals for improved availability and performance. As turbomachinery and mechanical equipment condition deteriorates, performance and throughput decrease and unplanned shutdowns become more probable. When plant operators have visibility to the performance of their high stakes assets, they can make process adjustments and reduce process disruptions.

In traditional control systems, integration is complex and expensive, requiring Modbus and system expertise as well as specific machinery knowledge. Typical machinery protection systems can require more than 2,000 steps and up to five days to complete the integration process. With this many steps, network issues, additional testing time and nuisance alarms are easily introduced. The barriers to undertaking integration are prohibitive, even though the payback from better information for operators is significant.

Emerson's integrated machinery protection and prediction solution, a key component of the PlantWeb® digital plant architecture, easily connects to the DeltaV system in three simple steps that take less than ten minutes. Asset parameters are scanned, selected and imported into the DeltaV system from AMS® Suite predictive maintenance software and the CSI 6500 Machinery Health® Monitor. After import, the DeltaV alarm banner is automatically populated and the system is fully configured with function blocks that can be further used in control strategies.

Integration in the operator interface also includes templates for vibration bar graphs, vibration values and auto highlighters to enable any DeltaV operator graphic to come alive with valuable operator machinery health information.

"The benefits of combining process information and machinery health have long been understood, but this is the first time the two have been integrated automatically and so extensively for engineering, operations, and reliability personnel," said Craig Llewellyn, president of Emerson's Asset Optimization division.

Emerson also provides PlantWeb Services to help users design, install, and implement machinery protection and prediction. With these new capabilities, the DeltaV system provides an integrated solution for process control, process safety, machinery protection and prediction.

For additional information on Machinery Protection and Prediction, see the brief videos at http://www.emersonprocess.com/videos/TechDemos_AssetReliability.asp.

Press Release: Emerson unveils full redundancy for Smart Wireless monitoring and control applications, furthers wireless adoption on all capital projects

Wireless control proven in installations using 1-second updates, enhanced PID, battery management, and WirelessHART™ network

AUSTIN, TEXAS (October 1, 2009) -- Responding to end-user requirements, Emerson has announced a unique approach to redundancy for Smart Wireless monitoring and control solutions. Available with the DeltaV™ S-series digital automation system, full redundancy protects the wireless network from any single point of failure by allowing primary failover to ensure that data is always delivered even if there is a malfunction.

The enhancements include redundant Wireless I/O, power and communications and a redundant Smart Wireless Remote Link. The Remote Link can be mounted in class 1/Div 1/zone 0; it easily links the wireless field network into a DeltaV system which makes an optimized PID available for wireless control. The new full redundancy furthers the strength of Smart Wireless technology as a complement to wired and bus approaches on capital projects.

"As plant studies have shown, reliable robust wireless technology should be a key component of all capital projects," said Bob Karschnia, vice president Wireless for Emerson Process Management. "Plants using wireless realize savings and become smarter through simpler engineering and construction, flexible start-up, faster deployment and project completion, and changing automation needs. Today wireless is readily deployed for monitoring, and customers have asked for redundancy for control as well as for critical monitoring points.

"Further, customers need proof that control with wireless is viable," continued Karschnia. "We've responded with real-world Smart Wireless installations using 1-second updates, enhanced PID, battery management, and WirelessHART™. We're excited about the expansion of benefits these new user-driven solutions offer."

Thousands of Smart Wireless installations are successfully operating globally in demanding environments industry-wide. The new wireless network redundancy and robustness enable confidence for customers to now extend use to critical monitoring and control applications with the same flexibility and ease of use of the entire Smart Wireless platform.

Smart Wireless is based on the WirelessHART™ standard which is designed for control and monitoring applications. Smart Wireless devices based on the WirelessHART standard deliver 99.9% reliability because of the self-organizing nature of the network. This ensures that data is always delivered reliably and is never lost. This level of reliability is a prerequisite to using wireless technology for any critical monitoring or control application. Devices that conform to the WirelessHART specification can sense measurements at update rates up to once per second. WirelessHART also allows exception reporting for network efficiency; devices only communicate a measurement value if it has changed significantly since the last communication or if the time since the last communication has exceeded a required reporting time, optimizing battery life.

Two recent installations have demonstrated the effectiveness of Smart Wireless for control over WirelessHART networks. At bioprocess technologies supplier Broadley James, WirelessHART pH and temperature transmitters control a single-use disposable bioreactor. "We conducted batch runs using mammalian cell culture," said Scott Broadley, president of Broadley James. "The observed pH and temperature control using wireless measurements was equivalent to that achieved using wired transmitters."

Similar results were seen at another installation at University of Texas where Stripper and Absorber Control is done using WirelessHART transmitters. Column pressure control and heater stream flow control using WirelessHART transmitters provided the same dynamic response and comparable performance to that achieved using wired transmitters.

Both installations use an enhanced PID algorithm available with the DeltaV S-series. This PID algorithm for wireless devices delivers high accuracy control in an exception reporting environment. It is a perfect complement to maximize control performance with wireless technology

In addition to the new redundancy capability, Emerson offers a wide range of wireless field instrumentation and plant operations equipment, including Emerson Smart Wireless Gateways with redundancy, THUM™ adapter, Fisher® position monitors, Rosemount® transmitters, Rosemount Analytical and Machinery Health™ Management devices, and native wireless interfaces to AMS Suite® predictive maintenance software, DeltaV™ and Ovation® digital automation systems, and wireless SmartStart™ Services.
Press Release: Emerson forms Human Centered Design Institute to drive Ease of Use into new product development

Reversing the Master / Servant relationship between technology and people will reduce product complexity and improve productivity

ORLANDO, FLA (September 28, 2009) -- Signaling an important change in technology trends, Emerson is making process control technology easier to use with its introduction of the Human Centered Design Institute. This announcement culminates more than 5 years of customer work-practice analysis, new product development re-engineering and organizational training. The goal is simple: make products that are not only reliable, compatible and cost-effective, but also bring about a significant improvement in ease-of-use and workforce productivity.

"Process control technologies have come a long way in the past 40 years," said Peter Zornio, chief strategic officer at Emerson. "But the industry has invested almost exclusively on feature and technology enhancement, instead of designing around how people actually use the technology. We believe it's time technology began serving people, instead of the other way around."

Emerson Process Management demonstrated its commitment to Human Centered Design (HCD) and reduced product complexity with this week's announcement of its new DeltaV™ S-series digital automation system hardware, and more than 50 new field Device Dashboards.

"We observed that customer project engineering and design processes across the industry put too much emphasis on locking down designs very early in the project, often before the process design was complete," noted Zornio. "Not only does this increase FEED and Detailed Design cost and time, it also exposes the project to increased labor and potentially significant change order costs during construction. Additionally, the existing wiring processes were time consuming and laborious...and ripe for an innovative approach."

With the new DeltaV S-Series of hardware, customers and Engineering Contractors can have unprecedented flexibility in I/O engineering thanks to Electronic Marshalling. Hard-wiring each device as a unique connection from field to controller and every contact in between is eliminated. This means less engineering up front and fewer change orders later in the project. This could revolutionize I/O and project engineering.

Emerson also turned its attention to day-to-day operations, focusing on the repetitive tasks operators and maintenance staff perform and how they interface with field devices.

"We evaluated device interfaces across the industry and found a common problem," said Zornio. "Routine steps which operators and maintenance personnel perform frequently were cumbersome, confusing and illogically laid out. It's an endemic problem throughout the industry. Based on user input, we have overhauled Emerson's Device Dashboard designs to improve speed and accuracy of confidently performing these tasks."

The primary goal of Emerson's Human Centered Design Institute is to ensure that user work practices and improved task completion (usability or workforce productivity) are at the heart of every new product that Emerson introduces.

"There is a demographic paradox facing the industry," said Zornio. "In mature markets, knowledgeable workers are retiring. In emerging markets, finding knowledgeable and skilled workers is very difficult. By putting increased emphasis on ease-of-use, we can meet this demographic challenge head-on and simply make it easier to extract value from technology investments."

"We've been incubating this HCD process since the early days of our Smart Wireless designs some years ago, collaborating with Carnegie Melon University, a recognized leader in human interface and interaction with technology," said Duane Toavs, director of Emerson's Human Centered Design Institute. "CMU helped us set direction and get it started, leading to our staffing of this virtual Emerson Human Centered Design Institute that spans design teams for all of our brands."

Human Centered Design is a multi-disciplined science. User Personas, Stakeholder Maps, along with intensive observational research, usability testing and heuristics analysis are key elements of the practice. They provide the insight to blend the disciplines of Industrial, Graphical and Human Interface design into products which are easier to use.

"Getting inside the heads of users, including how they interface with each other and the technologies, is the foundation of Human Centered Design," continued Toavs. "Based on interviews with more than 100 customers, we developed Personas and Stakeholder Maps which help us define the ecosystem of a plant. This includes how those users interact with technology, and how the design of those products affects their productivity. Simple in theory, but really challenging in practice. The products Emerson will introduce based on this and ongoing research will make a profound difference in how people accomplish their tasks."

"We believe Emerson is uncovering an untapped resource that will lead to increased productivity throughout the process manufacturing industry," said Chris Pacione, director of education at MAYA Design and LUMA Institute. "While they continue to deliver powerful new technology, Emerson's investment in HCD represents a major commitment toward taming the complexity inherent in these new products. It's an important commitment. This kind of focus on human centered design will enable more useful and usable solutions and invite Emerson customers and users to be co-inventors of the future of their work, rather than just waiting for it."

Press Release: Emerson introduces the DeltaV™ S-series platform with "I/O on Demand" that eliminates work, reduces project cost, and increases operational flexibility

New platform also unveils Electronic Marshalling, an industry breakthrough which streamlines 35-year old engineering practices

ORLANDO, FLA (September 28, 2009) -- Emerson Process Management announces the new S-series platform featuring "I/O on demand" and Electronic Marshalling. Resulting from an intense focus on Human Centered Design, the S-series headlines the company's wide ranging innovative technologies in the v11 release of the DeltaV™ digital automation system. The new DeltaV S-series platform sets the industry standard for usability and flexibility.

The new DeltaV release includes major enhancements to all of the systems' I/O processing, operator displays, asset management, batch capability and system security. These combined capabilities reduce customer project complexity, eliminate needless work, and speed system commissioning. They lift Emerson's PlantWeb® digital architecture to new levels of project and operations performance.

Unique project and operations advantages stem from the S-series I/O on Demand flexibility which allows users to choose among traditional wired, wireless, bussed and Electronic Marshalling.

With I/O on demand, users decide what type of I/O they want - Wireless, FF, HART, AI, AO, DI, DO, DP, T/C, or RTD. They decide when they want the I/O, whether for late project changes, during start-up, during operation, or temporary installations; and where they want the I/O, whether in a rack room, remote locations, hazardous areas, safety systems, or harsh environments. The DeltaV S-series enables this freedom of I/O choice and ease of implementation.

Further advantages are realized with Electronic Marshalling, a powerful new technology that streamlines design and installation for users. This unique marshalling approach eliminates two-thirds of the wiring and connections needed by today's conventional marshalling cabinets. A striking new technology invented with the S-series -- new single channel CHARacterization ModuleS (CHARMS) -- make this possible. CHARMS relay I/O information to any DeltaV controller via Ethernet backbone. This unique electronic communications method eliminates the need for users to wire I/O to specific controller I/O cards. This change can dramatically impact the users' experience since it provides single channel integrity and flexibility down to the channel (not I/O card) level. These benefits improve plant uptime, and make projects simpler and easier to engineer and implement.

Beyond making the normal project tasks easier, another significant benefit from Electronic Marshalling is dealing with change. Whereas traditional project engineering requires major time and cost in changing rack-room I/O wiring and terminations as process design is refined during project execution and construction, the DeltaV S-series hardware with Electronic Marshalling makes changes easy and eliminates re-wiring. Simply land the field wires, pop in the CHARM and electronically marshal it wherever needed. By adapting to change easily, Electronic Marshalling allows process manufacturers to shorten project schedules, accommodate late project changes, and dramatically simplify the I/O and marshalling design process. This late binding of process changes provides unparalleled adaptability and can help avoid costly, last minute change orders.

According to Larry O'Brien, research director at ARC Advisory Group, "There is a significant amount of cost associated with traditional marshalling methods, which can also limit the changes possible in the engineering and design of the system. The new I/O on Demand capability of Emerson's DeltaV S-series allows users to add or change I/O types whenever project design changes are made, and they can do it no matter where the I/O is located. Even more important than reducing projects costs is the reduced time to startup achieved by this kind of an approach."

The DeltaV S-series makes a major enhancement for WirelessHART networks as well. In addition to the existing native wireless integration, the new DeltaV S-series now has fully redundant communications, which together with the mesh wireless networks, provide the highest uptime possible. With these capabilities, users can apply wireless technology to more monitoring and control applications than ever before.

Foundation™ Fieldbus remains the bus of choice for process manufacturers due to its continuous diagnostics, control-in-the-field capabilities, and wiring economies. The S-series furthers these advantages by including a new Foundation fieldbus I/O card that includes an integrated power supply. Unique to Emerson, this new approach eliminates the cost and expense of purchasing, engineering, mounting and maintaining separate bulk power supplies and fieldbus power conditioning modules.

Although the S-series hardware and I/O on Demand are the headliners for the new DeltaV system, there are a number of other significant capabilities in this release. These new capabilities include an entirely new set of visually-focused operator displays that improve operator performance by clear and quick recognition of alerts, and rapid access to the information needed to understand the alert and act in a timely fashion. AMS® Suite predictive maintenance software is now installed on every DeltaV system, which enables a smooth progression of integrated asset capabilities. Users can start with the AMS Device Configurator, and easily activate AMS Intelligent Device Manager at any time. New capabilities in the release also span batch, reliability, usability and security.

The DeltaV S-series with I/O on Demand, together with other components of the v11 software release, offers a wide-ranging new solution set for process automation users, and is backward compatible with existing DeltaV installations. New projects or expansions, Greenfields or modernizations, can all realize advantages from these new capabilities.

Press Release: Emerson's digital automation creates highly efficient new Bunge rapeseed oil processing plant in Poland

PlantWeb® architecture with its DeltaV™ system has increased production by 10% and reduced maintenance by 50% as compared with the old plant being replaced

AUSTIN, TEXAS (September 17, 2009) -- Emerson Process Management's PlantWeb® digital plant architecture has enabled ZT Kruszwica, a subsidiary of Bunge - the world's largest producer of oilseed and bottled vegetable oils - to increase production by 10%, cut maintenance costs by 50% and significantly reduce the use of utilities and raw materials at a new rapeseed oil processing plant in Kruszwica, Poland.

The new ZT Kruszwica processing plant, which has become one of Bunge's top three most efficient vegetable oil processing sites worldwide, was built to replace an outdated unit located nearby. When ZT Kruszwica was looking to fully automate the new plant, it selected an automation solution based on Emerson's PlantWeb digital plant architecture with the DeltaV™ digital automation system and using HART® communications to network Emerson's intelligent devices throughout the plant, including Rosemount® transmitters and Micro Motion® Coriolis flowmeters.

"Crucial to the selection of the PlantWeb architecture was our conviction that it would deliver greater efficiency than the PLC based systems we had evaluated," said Jacek Brauer, ZT Kruszwica, Plant Automation Specialist/Automation Project Team Leader. When it became apparent that every single process across the plant could be controlled and configured from a single engineering station, it was an easy choice."

Emerson's DeltaV system has played a key role in helping to reduce variability within the process. By providing easy access to trend data, DeltaV makes it easy to spot deviations from optimum operating parameters. Using this information, ZT Kruszwica has modified and improved the algorithms run by the DeltaV system to optimize the process. As a result they have been able to run the plant closer to its maximum capacity without compromising end product quality.

The new Kruszwica plant has seen production almost double from 700 to 1300 tons a day compared with the old plant. This has been achieved largely because of the new machinery installed, including a larger extractor. The PlantWeb architecture has also helped to increase production. With access to additional measurement data it has been possible to identify and address bottlenecks in the process, and improve output. Since its start up, production at the new plant has increased by 10% as a result of improving production processes.

AMS® Suite, a key component of Emerson's PlantWeb digital architecture, was used prior to start up to ensure that devices were installed and configured correctly. This helped to accelerate commissioning and contributed to a highly successful start up. AMS Suite is now used to check and recalibrate level devices, identify flow meter sensor errors, and monitor the health of critical devices, especially those in hazardous areas.

"We have installed measurement points absolutely everywhere in the process, and by using the DeltaV system we are able to quickly identify if there are any problems with individual machines such as pumps," said Brauer. "We do not have time to monitor all the devices individually, but we can look at measurement data trends to identify and rectify faults immediately."

Total maintenance costs are 50 per cent lower than for the previous plant. The new high quality measurement and control devices from Emerson have been a significant factor in this reduction as they require less servicing. The automation solution has removed the need to monitor devices manually, and new procedures have been put in place to address problems quickly and efficiently.

Emerson's instrumentation and DeltaV system are helping to save energy at ZT Kruszwica. One example is the introduction of new temperature measurement points on the heat exchanger. Four Rosemount temperature transmitters are now used where previously only one was in place. The increased data made available from these additional instruments showed that the heat exchanger was only 50% efficient. Improvements were made to the program running this section of the process and efficiency was increased to 90% by using the DeltaV system. This has seen energy reduced by 1300GJ a month which amounts to EURO 77,000 a year.

The new plant, incorporating Emerson's digital architecture and DeltaV, has helped save valuable resources. There has been a significant reduction in the amount of raw materials and utilities used; hexane consumption and the use of bleaching earth have been reduced by 25%. This is as a result of constantly improving the programmes run by the DeltaV system. A new closed loop system that returns water back into the process has decreased water use by 75%.

This process is fully automated by the PlantWeb architecture, using over 100 of Emerson's Baumann™ and Fisher® control valves and over 950 ON/OFF valves fitted with Emerson's El-O-Matic® actuators, all controlled by the DeltaV system. Utilities are measured by Rosemount Vortex and Magnetic flowmeters.
