Known for its vast deli menu that catered to the club kids post 2 a.m., reps for the restaurant say they plan to look for a new space next year in West Hollywood, with the intent of reopening as a hybrid restaurant/market. Those behind Jerry's operate a string of Los Angeles delis and one in Miami, but also own two Epicure Markets (which appear to be a Whole Foods meets Trader Joe's type deal) in Florida. It's unclear whether an Epicure-brand market would come to Los Angeles or a new market concept altogether.

Jerry's Deli locations remain in Studio City, MdR, Woodland Hills, Encino, Westwood and Miami.

Chef Manouschka Guerrier, a private chef and cast member of Food Network's Private Chefs of Beverly Hills, posted a ridiculously long diatribe on Facebook yesterday about her horrific experience cooking at this is not a pop-up, the culinary incubator organized by Helen Springut and Helena Brown. Guerrier helmed the Tiago kitchen from April 25 to 28 and in the post she warns future chefs to think twice before signing on to participate. Right off the bat though, she discloses that she has never before worked in a restaurant kitchen. Below, her story.

Guerrier begins by describing the tactics used by Springut and Brown to convince her to do a four-day stint at this is not a pop-up's (tinap). Guerrier was promised a commissary kitchen to prep food, full service ingredient acquisition, and both front-of-house and kitchen staff. Springut and Brown were also supposed to handle the bulk of the marketing duties, ensuring that diners from around the city would fill the pop-up's seats. At the end of the day, she was supposed to receive a third of the profits after expenses. It didn't turn out to be that simple.

The pop-up lost its initial location at East Hollywood's Square One, and then lost its commissary. Guerrier writes,
"After Helen and Helena lost the spaces, that is when all the lies started pouring in. I was told they were going to get the A.O.C space and that I should prep to feed what I assumed would be up to 200 diners at my home. I said hell to the NO! Then Helen said she could get me Palihouse kitchen to prep in. That didn't happen. They finally got Tiago to be their host."

The environment and situation for Guerrier kept changing, but Springut insisted "that [her] appearance would go off without a hitch!" The whole enterprise seemed to rest on the fact that Guerrier thought Springut and Brown were supposed to do their part by arranging for ingredients. But this wasn't the case. Guerrier fired back asking,
"Wait a minute – you expect ME to invite people, prep, cook AND shop... what exactly are you guys doing?!?!" A very un-businesslike back and forth began as Helen responded that "I never said I would shop, I said I would order"

Guerrier goes on:
"If they can't handle the shopping or the 'ordering' I'm sorry but I'm out! I need to handle my business and this is no longer worth it to me. Helena [Brown] offers her apologies, states that her business partner [Springut] has a problem with embellishing facts and that her doing 'damage control' with all of their Chefs they have had come aboard is a weekly occurance, for me not to worry that she would handle the shopping."

In the meantime, there were issues getting produce and meat delivered to the restaurant and complaints about the lack of media coverage on the four-day pop-up. There was no mention of it on this site or any other major publication. Once it came to opening night, it didn't start well. Guerrier describes the kitchen at Tiago:
"Tiago seriously isn't a kitchen. It's a deep fryer, a flat top and 5 portable induction burners... 4 of which are the only ones working. The space is tight. The Tiago employee that I am obligated to use is basically a $100 a day dishwasher. The first day, while not exactly a disaster, isn't going along at all as I planned, I am STRESSED beyond belief!"

The rest of the pop-up didn't have any major hiccups (except the ineffectual dishwasher), though the nights were generally slow and most of the attendees were Guerrier's friends, not the outsiders and industry friends that Springut and Brown supposedly promised. When it came down to splitting the profits, Guerrier ended up with a mere $867 (which was only explained in detail after a breakdown of expenses was requested) for four nights of work, plus all the prep involved with putting together the four-night stint. Lesson learned. The entire 4,882 word rant is posted here.

Springut and Brown have the following response to Manouschka's rant: "One of the nicest parts of doing this is not a pop-up is that we get to work with lots of different personalities and talent, and figure out who we work easily with. Mostly it goes well, but it's always a learning experience. We've had multiple chefs come back to cook with us - we think that speaks for itself."
Many people will be killing time at the airport waiting for flights to take off, or perhaps, trying to survive unexpected delays. Thanks to recent efforts by LAX to improve the food and dining options, a slew of great concepts are signed up to serve at both the domestic and Tom Bradley International Terminal. Coming soon are places like Luckyfish by Sushi Roku, 800 Degrees, The Larder, Short Cake and more. But, until then, here's a list of what is on offer now with info about eateries in each terminal, and recommendations for where to go.

LAX's Four Standouts

2) Pink's: The famed Pink's on La Brea launched this first airport counter over a year ago with much fanfare. While it only occupies a small stand and serves an abbreviated menu, many favorites are on offer, thus Pink's is one of the better dining options around. Especially for grab and go. Best part, almost no lines. [Tom Bradley International Terminal, Departures Level Food Court, Second Floor]

This pared down version of the quick-casual gourmet salad spot offers sandwiches, soups and breakfast. The cinnamon french toast bread pudding is far better than a Starbucks cinnamon roll.
A highly curious new hot pot chain born in Sichuan, with 75 locations in China and Singapore, is opening its first US location in Arcadia this September. Hai Di Lao, which translates to "fishing in the bottom of the sea" in Mandarin, is a tech-savvy, customer service driven enterprise, sort of like the Benihana of hot pot. Abroad, patrons waiting for tables can play board games, use the internet, eat free snacks, or even get a manicure and shoeshine.

Customers order via iPads and the restaurant offers a "cyber" dining room equipped with flat screen tvs and a service that enables businessmen to conduct video chat meetings while dining. The room costs $65 per hour.

Hai Di Lao owner Zhang Yong trains "noodle masters" for about four to six months in the art of stretching balls of dough into noodles by "whipping the center out like a jump rope and rippling and swirling it through the air like the ribbons." (The old Philippe on Melrose offered a less grand performance like this.) Eventually those noodles are dropped into diners' broths.

The restaurant is also known for giving out hair ties to diners with long hair (to prevent hair from getting in soup), hot towels, and eyeglass wipes to clean off steamy lenses. It's a concept that has proven highly successful in China and, while operations will be tweaked for the US market, sounds promising for Arcadia as well.
And here is True Burger, a new burger place that soft opened May 13 and touts quality ingredients like Jidori chicken, completely natural and hormone-free beef, with burger buns sourced from Melrose Baking Company and coffee by Caffe Vita. Management believes "that dining out should never be misleading or confusing," which is funny because the very first burger photo on True Burger's website looks suspiciously like The Original Umami burger, crinkly bun, cheese tuile and all.

Prices are about the same as Umami as well, with burgers running between $10 to $12, and even sides are almost identical. True Burger offers home fries, sweet potato fries, truffle fries, onion rings, and a pickle plate. Umami offers: Smushed potatoes, onion rings, sweet potato fries, truffle fries (with add-ons), and a fried pickle plate.

Burgers take on their on flavor profiles though. There's a brunch burger, an Italian burger, and non-beef versions with short rib, chickpeas, and even a chicken and waffles sort.

As for the space, light aesthetic changes were made that mainly involve new art and chairs. Free parking is offered in the adjacent lot, but in the future management will add valet and charge $2.75.

Right now True Burger is open for biz daily from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Those who check in via Foursquare and Yelp can score 25% off the bill. [EaterWire]

With The Foundry's temporary shutter in full effect, it's time to turn attention to skinny next door neighbor Greenspan's Grilled Cheese, the long awaited melted cheese sandwich place from vociferous chef Eric Greenspan. Remember, this is a concept born from a Grilled Cheese Invitational win back in 2008 thanks to a Taleggio cheese, short rib, arugula and apricot caper purée on raisin bread creation. Spacecraft has been onboard to design this project from the early days and, up above, a look at what the narrow eatery will look like come July.

It's a simple scheme, with maybe a few tables up front and a long counter in the back flanking a parallel eating ledge. But the question remains whether Greenspan will bring back his salty sweet explosion gut bomb of a sandwich, the triple decker Monte Cristo: white bread with corned beef, cheddar, turkey, Gruyère, maple mustard, which is then dipped in French toast batter, deep fried, and dusted with powdered sugar. Peach black pepper marmalade on the side.
Elizabeth Daniels 5/13

With Restaurant Critic Jonathan Gold firmly planted at the Los Angeles Times, his annual Gold Standard tasting event from days back at The Weekly took on new form as Bite Nite, a collection of Gold's 23 favorite on and off the beaten path restaurants, which set up stands last night inside the LA Times building downtown. There were chicken and lamb hearts from Corazon y Miel and Bestia, meticulously arranged cups of Dungeness crab with summer squash, almond milk, quinoa and basil from Alma chef Ari Taymor, and the Guisados team plated up incredibly juicy chicken and lamb tacos, adding that their next restaurant at 6th and Spring will open late next year. And, who could miss Bell favorite La Casita Mexicana and its monumental table of food from pistachio mole to ceviches to flan.

Chef Roy Choi parked a Kogi truck outside the building and runners carried up freshly made tacos from the ground to level six, Wolfgang Puck was in attendance representing CUT and Spago with NY steak over a caramelized summer corn salad, and a single raviolo filled with an egg yolk and ricotta topped with guanciale. Other highlights were Sqirl's rabbit rillettes with rhubarb chutney, and The Hart & the Hunter's trout toast. Funny lady Kathy Griffin made the rounds, stopping to post for photos with fans.

With about 300 tickets sold, guests didn't much have to wait in line for bites, although by around 8:40 p.m. (the event ran until 10 p.m.) many restaurants ran out of food. And, surprisingly, nobody served dessert except for La Casita's flan and Bestia's walnut shortbread. All in all, a well curated event, though perhaps next year more eateries will participate and tickets will open to the public, not just to LA Times subscribers.

After about a week of preview dinners, Petty Cash Taqueria is ready to open for the public. Originally conceived by Walter Manzke (Republique), this taqueria sports a menu of street-inspired tacos, quesadillas, ceviches and aguachiles. Manzke's concept involves serving elevated tacos using quality ingredients, traditional flavors, and proper preparation. There's handmade tortillas, fresh seafood, and specially-sourced meats, all prepared from a chef's perspective.

Produced in conjunction with Bill Chait and Bill Esparza, Petty Cash's menu — like the Kraken taco, filled with octopus and charred chile de arbor, as well as the charcoal-roasted portobello mushroom taco — is partly inspired by Tacos Kokopelli's chef Oso Campos.

As for aesthetics, the restaurant's interior looks reminiscent of the late Playa, but more playful, casual, and open, with long bench seating and even a shuffleboard in the back for those tequila-fueled matches.

The drink menu is by Julian Cox, and features on-tap cocktails like the Fly By Night, using scotch, gentiane, ginger, bitters and a grapefruit twist. The Nacho Libre calls for pisco, lime, caramelized pineapple syrup, egg white and Creole bitters. And finally, expect some rare Mexican spirits like sotol and bacanora, in addition to a strong lineup of tequilas and mezcals. Opening is at 6 p.m. tonight, walk-ins only. [Eaterwire]

Office workers in Downtown will finally have a third wave, specialty coffee shop to score their daily buzz. Please welcome Barista Society, the brainchild of Charn Bak, who previously created Elabrew (formerly Brew Bar at Santa Monica's Water Garden, Hollywood CNN Tower), to the fold of game changing Downtown coffee bars.

Located directly across from the L.A. Public Library and on the mezzanine of the U.S. Bank Tower, Barista Society will be brewing up a selection of top-notch roasters from around the country, including Stumptown, Heart Coffee, Blue Bottle, and Verve in a variety of formats. Think espresso, pour over, cold-brew, and 12-hour Kyoto drip (for the patient coffee drinkers). The name Barista Society came about as a way to emphasize baristas who enjoy sharing their passion for coffee.

Great news for nearby office workers who've had to settle for the likes of Starbucks and Coffee Bean until now. Instead of generic pastries, there's baked treats from B1 Breadshop. Also expect a high-quality selection of teas from Mem Tea, as well as full ceremonial Matcha tea prepared in the traditional way.

Barista Society will provide indoor seating as well as outdoor patio tables. Initial hours of operation will run 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Saturday. A grand opening is set for May 28, with free lattes given away from 9 to 11 a.m. [Eaterwire]

Cohn Restaurant Group has dominated the San Diego scene with a dozen restaurants, and now one of its dining concepts, Bo Beau Kitchen + Bar, is making its way up north to Long Beach. Construction is underway in the long vacant Smooth's Sports Grille space for the Frenchy fusion bistro, which will have a rooftop lounge and martini bar with over 100 vodkas. CRG is looking to open in the fall.

It is unclear whether Spacecraft design group is actually associated with this project. Spacecraft ply has been up for well over a year when the space was linked to Santa Charro, which predates the sale to the CRG. [EaterWire]
— Matthew Bragman

Update: Kris Keith over at Spacecraft confirms that he will, in fact, design Bo Beau. He's also building out the rooftop bar called Rooftap.

There's a nifty event going on this coming Father's Day from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. where Firestone Walker and Food GPS are putting together craft breweries and local coffee roasters, along with local chefs, for a "collabrewtive" brunch in the Arts District.

The beer-coffee duos will pit Firestone Walker with Intelligentsia, Golden Road with Handsome Coffee, Eagle Rock Brewery with Tierra Mia, Beachwood Brewing with Portola Coffee, Cismontane with Caffe Luxxe, and Ladyface with LAMILL. In addition to the special coffee beers, each brewery is bringing along another beer to taste.

This unique collaboration won't go without some food from the likes of Genevieve Gergis & Ori Menashe (Bestia), Daniel Mattern & Roxana Jullapat (Cooks County), Zoe Nathan (Huckleberry), Jason Travi (littlefork), John Sedlar (Rivera), and Steve Samson & Zach Pollack (Sotto). In all, a good time to hang out with dad, or just with friends on a Sunday afternoon. Tickets cost $50 presale (kids half off) or $60 at the door. [ELA]
