1. Permanent Closure of GenOn PRGS – In August 2011, The City and GenOn Energy agreed to permanently closing the Potomac River Generating Station, “the single largest source of air pollutant emissions in Northern Virginia,” by October 1, 2012.
2. New Hybrid DASH Buses and King Street Trolleys  - The City and DASH purchased 10 hybrid buses and 5 hybrid trolleys.
3. Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant Projects – From City Hall’s “green roof” to LED traffic lights, the EECBG uses the Virtual Green Building Resource Center to assess the sustainability of residential, commercial, and City buildings.
4. Continued Promotion of Green Building Construction – Gold and Platinum LEED certification.
5. Recognized as Silver Level Walk-Friendly Community – The Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center dubbed Alexandria as one nation’s most walk-able cities that is actively improving safety, mobility, and accessibility conditions.

Chinese New Year Parade is Jan. 31 in Washington, DC.

Unleash your inner dragon this year at the Chinese New Year Parade in Washington, DC. Chinatown will be blazing with this annual celebration of the Lunar New Year, this year being the Year of the Dragon.

On Saturday, January 29 join the city in welcoming Chinese Lunar New Year 4710 with festivities, foods, and entertainment from the Chinese culture. There will be a parade, firecrackers, authentic cuisine, music, dancing, and of course the iconic lion dancers.

This colorful parade starts at 6th and I Street NW at 2pm and goes to 6th and H Street, lasting about 2 1/2 hours. Bring the whole family and get ready for an explosive event to mark new beginnings.

Celebrate the end of the holiday season and the beginning of a new exciting year by attending this year’s First Night Alexandria. A combination of visual, musical, and performing arts, First Night Alexandria is just one of the many New Year’s Eve spectaculars taking place across the country.

The fun starts on Saturday, December 31 at 1pm with a Fun Hunt scavenger adventure for little ones. A long list of events take you through the night until midnight when 6,000 balloons will drop on Kings Street and kick off the 2012.

Tickets to attend the many performances, vendors, and arts exhibits are $20 per adult or FREE for kids under 12. You can purchase tickets online or in person at various retail locations in Alexandria through Friday, December 30.
