Terapeak and eBay veteran Miriam Otto from The eBay Life Blog was given a strange looking vintage clock by her neighbour. After researching using Terapeak she discovered the clock was a rare Howard Miller piece and that using the keywords “spike” and “sunburst” would increase the visibility of the item to prospective buyers. After a frantic bidding war in the final minutes of the auction the clock sold for a whopping $400! Check out the full story on The eBay Life Blog. This week, we took a look at the popularity of My Little Pony gear. My Little Pony is a brand of toy ponies introduced in the ‘80s and primarily marketed to girls, produced by the toy manufacturer Hasbro. The original toy line ran from 1983 to 1995 and was the inspiration for animated specials, a feature film, and three television series.

We used Terapeak to generate a 7-day report for the key phrase “My Little Pony”, and found a low sell-through rate of 35.93% with an average price of $13.41. The best day of the week to sell is Tuesday, via a 7-day bid auction, at 6-7PM. We noticed that higher priced listings also included the keyword “custom”, so we also generated a report for the key phrase “custom My Little Pony”, and found a substantially higher sell-through rate of 54.64% and an average price of $53.29.

While popular keywords for this brand include “custom”, “vintage”, and “Hasbro”, we noticed some higher priced items with multiple bids included the keyword “brony”. We looked up the term “brony” on Google, and came up with this Wired article, My Little Pony Corrals Unlikely Fanboys Known as ‘Bronies’, which defines a “brony” as a “bro pony” (Brony = Bro + Pony), and refers to men who are fans of the 2010 My Little Pony TV show, Friendship is Magic.

We did a another 7-day report, this time including the keyword “brony” within our search, and were amazed to discover a sell-through rate of 71.43% with an average price of $31.69 – double of what similar products went for without this keyword. The best day of the week to sell is Thursday, via a fixed price or 11-day bid auction, at 8-9PM – very different statistics from the search without the keyword “brony”. We also generated a report for the key phrase “custom My Little Pony brony”, and again, found a slightly higher sell-through rate of 77.78% and a substantially higher average price of $69.

There were noticeably fewer listings for My Little Pony gear with the keyword “brony”, which explains the higher price and sell-through rate: limited supply for this niche market results in higher demand. This is a key example of how important it is to pay attention to the keywords in your Terapeak search results – particularly in terms of keeping an eye out for profitable keywords for listings with multiple bids. In this case, simply adding just one keyword to a listing could easily double both the price and sell-through rate.

Terapeak for Yahoo! JAPAN was specifically developed for sellers on the Yahoo! JAPAN Auction platform. Just before Christmas, we signed up to sponsor a Parrot at the World Parrot Refuge in Coombs, BC. The WPR is an organization that provides ‘homes for life’ for companion birds that have been surrendered by, or removed from their previous owners. There are over 800 parrots at the Refuge, and they have everything from tiny Lovebirds and Parakeets to giant (but friendly!) Hyacinth Macaws.

Since Parakeet is an anagram of Terapeak, and since there are a few bird enthusiasts on staff, this seemed like the perfect choice!

So please meet the newest member of the Terapeak family – Squawkington Flappsalot! He’s an Amazon Parrot, who likes to scream “Hi Hi Hi” at the top of his voice. Chrissy from our Marketing team (who has two birds of her own) went down to meet him, and here are some pictures of him. Pretty bird!
