Collective provides members an unprecedented
opportunity to network, produce, and promote original projects such as
staged readings, improv, sketch comedy, etc. Additionally, The
Collective will also serve as a network support group, sharing
experiences and resources with each other.

What makes an Independent Casting Director so useful to the actor is that there are a variety of projects going on at any given time going on for them. For example, Pat McCorkle of McCorkle Casting Ltd. may have movie projects, a TV show, Regional, Broadway and West end Theatre projects AND New Play Readings…at the same time! This, of course, means more opportunities for actors, no matter what the interest or skill level. This is also why getting to know and learn from someone like Pat can prove useful both in the short and long run!

On the other hand, many, many actors never seem to break into this world. In some ways it has completely different rules than other type acting gigs. It requires an ability to be spontaneous, upbeat (for the most part) and have a sense of humor. Second, having an ability to instantly read the audition copy-like it came from you-is crucial. Finally, knowing who the right casting people are and having an agent who actually sends actors out on commercials is a necessary ingredient. Voice-overs and voice acting is something that everyone seems to have interest in. What could be better, reading into a microphone, not being seen, lot of money….As it is with most things in the show business world, there is much more to it than that. First is, of course, an ability to perform consistently, in a studio environment. For many, this may not be as easy as it seems. Directors, audio technicians, Ad Reps., Copy-writiers, can make a pressured situation worse. Next, the actor must be able to offer several interpretations of the same script. Third, getting the job by having a great audition and demo-tape that has “professional” written all over it are essential ingredients that make a Voice-Over career a realistic pursuit. Finding out if you’ve got what it takes may simply be a matter of taking a class with a professional instructor who can help you.

Whether its a guest starring appearance on “Gossip Girl” or being featured on a TV commercial, getting cast is usually the final step for an actor in search of a job. Being prepared is the key to a successful career. Many believe that just meeting a casting director is all that is needed to “get the job”. Well, here’s a reality check: Casting Directors meet or see hundreds if not thousands of eager actors. Which means that unless there is something spectacular, unique, special about you, chances are that you will not be remembered. There is hope however. Consider working with a Casting Director who also teaches a class. This is now a double win for you. First, you learn about what skills you may need, tips for success and gain understanding about the casting process. Second, you can make a positive impression about your talent and personality over time with a class taught by the same casting person who may just need what you have. Of course, there is no guarantee of employment, just an opportunity to learn AND increase your visibility. This is especially true if you work with top casting people like Pat McCorkle, Rebecca Yarsin, Findley Davidson.

Producers of Broadway’s West Side Story had two reasons to celebrate this week.
Not only did the production at the Palace Theatre (1564 Broadway) break the theatre’s box-office record two weeks in a row — but two of the show’s stars have renewed their contracts well into 2010.
Tony Award winner Karen Olivo (Anita) and Tony Award nominee Josefina Scaglione (Maria) have both renewed their contracts.

Casting this Tony award winning production is Stuart Howard, well known toTVIas a guest teacher/instructor.

Three general rules that might help you understand membership!
1) An actor can join SAG through the Taft-Hartley Act, which makes it possible for an actor to work on a SAG-recognized project for 30 days, even if he or she is not a member.
2) An actor may be able to joinSAG if he or she can prove that they have worked or are expected to work on a SAG-recognized project.
3) Actors may be able to join SAG if they can prove that they have been a member of another actor union, such as the Actors’ Equity Association, and they have had a lead (principal) role while a member of that union.

Tips to be a Successful Actor in New York City

Before you prepare your Academy Award speech, it might be a good idea to take a good look at your personal progress first. Do you have an agent? Great!….are they sending you out on auditions?…..Great!…are you booking work?….Great!…are you playing roles you are showcased in?….You can see that the questions can et pretty tough, especially if you are just starting out. Just remember it is all about perseverance and being ready. Probably the best way to be ready is through classes, meeting industry pros, working with a career coach, rehearsing your scenes, auditions, script work. Then and only then are you on your way to Acting Success It stops being a dream when it becomes a goal that you set! Best wishes for a fantastic New Year. I look forward to seeing you at TVI!
