You might not realize it, but e commerce started way before the first Internet connection. Things started happening in the 1960s, over 40 years ago, that were crucial steps along the way, bringing us to the level of e commerce we have today.

First, the EDI was developed in the 60s. EDI means Electronic Data Interchange. This is a set of standards for electronic transactions and the exchange of business information.

Even with this development, many companies still couldn’t do business electronically with each other because there were different EDI formats. But in 1984, one EDI, the ASC X12, became the standard for transferring large amounts of transactions, and was adapted quickly by those institutions who wanted to do business electronically.

Eight years later in 1992, the first point and click web browser was developed, called Mosaic. Then the first downloadable browser, Netscape, was developed based on Mosaic, and this gave people with Internet access the ability to participate in electronic commerce.

This was really the first step in the history of e commerce that lead to the widespread e commerce usage we see today.

DSL or high-speed Internet let more users take advantage of e commerce with more convenience, with the holiday season of 1998 setting a record of the most e commerce sales until that point. Online sales for AOL during that 10-week Christmas season topped $1 billion.

Red Hat Linux was developed, giving computer users a choice. No longer was Windows the only option, consumers could opt for reliable and open-sourced Linux, instead. Now that there was competition, Windows began expanding its ability to handle e commerce.

Napster was founded in 1999, and even though it started out as a way for users to share music files for free, its development was an important step in the history of e commerce. As it became more and more popular, consumers had a say in what they hoped to get from such a site, and e commerce and the entire industry, in general.

Then, in 2000, AOL and Time Warner merged, combining a completely online company with an old and established traditional company. By then, Yahoo, eBay and Amazon.com were popular sites, their names synonymous with Internet use and e commerce.

Hackers attacked each of these sites in 2000, demonstrating the need for higher Internet security, particularly where e commerce was concerned. In the history of e commerce, this started the push for secure ordering and more secure browser interfaces.

Traditional companies started adapting for e commerce, and now almost every major retail player has an online presence where it’s easy and convenient to order electronically, like Sears, Wal-Mart and Borders bookstores.

In 2001, online business-to-business transactions alone accounted for $700 billion changing hands.

With more people discovering the convenience of shopping from home than ever, it’s clear that the history of e commerce isn’t a closed book, but will continue to change as online shopping becomes more and more popular.

Just don’t ask for the key to success in Internet marketing. You don’t need to climb a mountain for that, it’s actually pretty simple…

Find the people who are looking for what you sell, or what you do.

No doubt as you were rushing off to start doing exactly that, it occurred to you that while it’s a great idea, it isn’t immediately obvious where to start.

Well, think about it.

When you want to find something, what do you do? Fire up your search engine, right?

Of course you do!

The key then, assuming you actually have a product or service people would want if they found you, is making yourself easy to find in search engines.

It always amazes me how difficult some companies are to find.

Maybe my hobbies are obscure. Maybe hobbyists make the products I’m interested in and not the people who are genuinely interested in having their business succeed.

But really, it amazes me how often I hear about a product, search for it, can’t find it, and eventually after scouring Internet forums and meandering through link after link, I find exactly what I’m looking for!

The journey’s always interesting, but really, if webmasters optimized their websites so that search engines could find them, then I could find them. I might be more eager to give them my money if I didn’t feel like I had to climb a mountain though.

Search engine optimization (SEO) is, simply put, the process of improving your odds of people finding you through search engines. It is also the key to the success in Internet marketing. This typically involves choosing targeted keywords carefully. And then making sure they appear often, and in the right places, on your site.

Ideally, through various SEO techniques, you can not only ensure that your site will show up in the SERP’s (search engine results pages) for the most logical searches, but you can push your site toward the top. The higher you are in the SERP’s, the more likely you’re going to get lots of visitors.

After all, what do you do when you use a search engine? Do you scour all the results up to page 20?

Probably not.

As a marketing strategy, you need to consider how search algorithms work and what people search for in order to succeed with SEO. Your efforts will most likely involve more than just keywords.

They can involve the actual coding, presentation and structure of the site. It can also involve fixing problems that could prevent search engine indexing programs from spidering your site successfully. If you are not familiar with terms like spidering, you’ll need to do your homework before you can hope optimize your site.

Either that or you’ll need to hire someone who already knows all this stuff. Beware of trying to fool the search engines, however. Most search engines are sophisticated enough to filter out the obvious attempts at spamming the search engine with junk hits just to get your site up there.

In the beginning, it can be a little tricky, but you should learn as much as you can about SEO.

If you drop the words “free marketing leads” in your search engine, chances are it will generate page after page of hits. Chances, are almost all of these hits will be pretty dodgy, ranging from Multi-Level-Marketing schemes to ‘companies’ whose sole purpose is to rip you off by selling you lists of free leads.

Wait a minute—if they’re selling you leads, then the leads aren’t free, right? You’d think. But apparently there truly is a sucker born every minute.

Another kind of “free marketing lead”— one of those kinds that at some point in the chain, you’ll probably be expected to cough up some cash for — is lists of emails.

Often the seller of the list claims that these emails are pre-filtered to be relevant to exactly what you are selling. Often enough, this same seller sells the same list to every would-be marketer, regardless of what that would-be marketer is actually trying to market. In other words, these leads have the proverbial snowball’s chance in a well-known, hot, unpleasant place of ever generating sales.

They’re basically a way of cold calling. In other words, if you’ve always dreamed of becoming a spammer, this is the way to go.

Sales leads are, obviously, leads that can lead directly to sales. Marketing leads are slightly different. These are targeted leads that are brand-specific rather than product specific.

What makes your brand special? Do people know what you do? How you do it? Who you are? Think about who needs what you do. This is the first step in generating genuine marketing leads.

Perhaps the best, most honest, most dignified source of free marketing leads is your own website. People who visit your website do so for a reason. If they visit more than once, they’re genuinely interested in what you do, who you are, and how you do what you do. These are genuine free marketing leads, and about as precisely targeted as you could hope for.

The Internet is absolutely amazing.

Quite possibly, everything that human beings have ever known will eventually find its way onto the Internet.

Unfortunately, a great deal of wildly inaccurate information and even deliberately misleading information, has also found its way here.

It’s always great and very useful to read articles from site, after site, after site.

But maybe sooner or later you want to ask a question or two and you want someone with some real knowledge, to actually answer.

Well, guess what?

You can ask.

You can get answers and you don’t even have to pay for them.

How?

Easy. Sign up for an Internet marketing forum.

In case you’ve never joined one, an Internet forum is a website, or area of a website, where the site’s members can post information and discuss whatever interests them. These forums are essentially public—that is, all members can read them.

Forums are generally organized by topic.

Within each broad category, the individual members create the topics. One member starts a ‘thread’ by making a statement, or more often than not, asking a question. Someone else responds to the question, and someone responds to the response, etc.

This can go on for page after page.

You can get valuable information this way. But, you can also get complete nonsense, and can quickly realize that just about every wing nut on the planet has access to the net and loves forums. Some of these wing nuts can, at times, be extremely belligerent.

Fortunately, most forums are moderated. That is, the site basically hires a referee to keep members from abusing each other, and depending on the site’s policy, maybe even keep them on topic.

Not surprisingly, an Internet marketing forum is a place devoted to marketing goods and services over the net. Such forums enable you to interact directly with other Internet marketers, and would-be net marketers, getting answers to your questions and in turn, perhaps answering some of theirs.

Quite possibly, you might even be able to market your goods and services this way, and quite organically. You go on the forum and just happen to find out that someone needs what you have, or what you do.

Another benefit from net forums is that they tend to be populated by regular members.

This means that over time, the regular members get to now each other, and a sense of community grows. This can be a valuable source of moral support for someone trying to market a product or service over the Internet. Chances are, even though marketing over the Internet involves reaching out to potential customers and providing goods or services to existing customers, you can end up feeling isolated.

It’s good to have an informal environment where you can talk shop with other like-minded individuals.
