We received quite a few emails in the past several hours referencing a thread on eBay discussing eBay’s falling listing counts over the past several days – down from roughly 141 million listings to about 70 million listings. First off, the listings haven’t dropped. They’re still there, they just aren’t being counted properly by the auction tracking sites that people are looking at. Of course, it’s not really the fault of these sites, since eBay isn’t counting them properly either.

But let’s put it this way, if those are accurate figures ebay may have some big truouble on their hands. It does seem odd though that the so-called industry leaders are all mum about hings. Seems like a major event to me.

I’m just wondering why that hasn’t gotten any attention from more ebay blogs, or on ebay forums or announcement boards? Seems suspect.

For anyone reading this, don’t use ebay. I’ll say it again. Do NOT use eBay! Tell anyone you care about not to either. It’s an ID theft AIDS repository and a claptrap. Your ‘stuff’ will turn green and fall off, your ID will get stolen.

Ebay will blame you even though everything wrong and/or bad on that site is 100% their fault.

There was another seller here in the states that fell for a scam, selling for a business associate or something like that. Pregnant mom or single mom, there was a huge thread about it on T&S a few months back. I’m sure eBay is well aware of that scam as well as the others that are working this holiday season.

This has got to be the biggest eBay screwing of the year! Hopefully eBay and PayPal refunds all the buyers.

OMG I’m dying of laughter looking at some of those numbers, then comparing them to the people’s statements about their “success” hahahaha

I hope everyone who got scammed files criminal charges against the seller, ebay and paypal. Doesn’t matter whether you got a refund or not. It’s part of a bigger crime. Ebay and paypal hold culpability because they had the chance to stop it much sooner. They profited by not stopping it. It also shows a clear and continuing pattern of fraud.

Anyone reading this, make sure you mention that when filing your reports, as well as the fact that hundreds (maybe thousands by the time it’s all said & done) of others were also scammed.

I find that statement along with ebay/paypal’s actions/inactions policies to be at fault.

The fault being incongruous application of policies. While you are limiting selling abilities and freezing funds of little old ladies selling skeins of yarn and freezing their funds, how could you possibly not be aware of this issue?

Furthermore, don’t you owe it to your beloved community to alert them to this, perhaps on your announcement board, community forums, or any number of PR machinations at your disposal?

This is no small issue.
You owe your users and the public at large a real explanation. You owe these victims a swift refund and a sincere apology, along with a mea culpa.

I strongly urge and beseech you to act quickly.

Trust in information on the web is being damaged by the huge numbers of people paid by companies to post comments online, say researchers.

Fake posters can “poison” debate and make people unsure about who they can trust, the study suggests.

Some firms have created tens of thousands of fake accounts to flood chat forums and skew debate.

The researchers say there are reliable ways to spot fakes and urge websites to do more to police users.

The researchers from Canada and China say paying people to post comments is an “interesting strategy in business marketing” but it is not a benign activity.

“Paid posters may create a significant negative effect on the online communities, since the information from paid posters is usually not trustworthy,” they wrote.
Battles

In some cases, rival companies have used competing armies of workers to wage comment wars that confused members of the public looking for unbiased information.

The researchers say the fake comments can overwhelm some users, causing them to find it hard to trust any information found online.

They give the example of a spike in activity on a World of Warcraft chat forum on the Chinese website Baidu.

A thread titled “Junpeng Jia, your mother asked you to go back home for dinner!” received over 300,000 replies over a two day period.

A PR company later claimed it had employed 800 individuals to run 20,000 separate accounts on the site to help maintain interest in the videogame while it was down for maintenance.
Growing problem

While the practice of flooding forums with fake comments is most widespread in China, where such posters are called the Internet Water Army, it is becoming common in other nations too.

The US military is known to use fakes to infiltrate chat forums to gather information about potential terror groups.

Similarly many Facebook pages are plagued by bogus friends and “social bots” that are used to stage debates.

Many marketing firms also seed forums with comments in a bid to create “viral” interest in a company or event.

However, fakes can be spotted by analysing their patterns of activity and the words they use, say the researchers.

Fakes are more likely to start new comment threads, make inane comments rather than add to a debate, and repeat former comments with minor changes, the study suggests.

The researchers say they are refining software tools to help website administrators tackle the “painful” problem.

It’s a crying shame what eBay Motors has become in recent years.

But for a company to allow it’s members to ridicule a scammed seller on it’s own discussion forums, speaks negatively very well for the company itself as a whole.

And using company Shills, Astroturfers, and Sock Puppets to seed and carry on conversations on company message boards and forums is probably not a good idea either.

As long as eBay continues to disrupt their own once very successful business model and chase Amazon’s tail, there is no telling what they will do next.

It’s only a matter of time before the whole organization implodes upon itself.

Obviously the guy knew that was a too good to be true deal!

But the dealerships management at Scottsdale Bentley could have negotiated a deal with the guy. He was in the market for a Bentley for his wife, and the dealership could have somehow negotiated a sale. Now they have pizzed the buyer off and the Negative PR will spread near and far.

It’s also interesting that cars and real estate on eBay are NON BINDING categories.. BUT a buyer can get an Unpaid Item Strike if they don’t pay, and a seller can face sanctions and receive negative feedback from a buyer that don’t pay. BUT the transaction is NON BINDING!

But i can’t see eBay pulling the listing just because there was a mistake in the buy now price. Must have been to prevent the buyer from leaving the seller Negative Feedback!
