"Umitaka-maru IV", a training ship of for Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology surveyed in Antartica

The " Umitaka-maru â�¡" (formerly, a training Ship of Tokyo University of Fisheries) went the first Antarctic observation dates back to 1956. This year, Antarctic research ship as the first Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition, "Soya" headed to Antarctica for the first time, "Umitaka-maru â�¡" was accompanied by the ship "Soya" for supporting it. Since then, "Umitaka-maru" is now IV, Antarctic observation counts the 15th time. The "Umitaka-maru IV " has been done six times Antarctic voyage since 2002. Antarctic cruise has been done by using a training course to be ship officers. This year of cruise started on 14 November 2011 in Tokyo, and tuna long line fishing was conducted in the Indian Ocean on the way of arriving in Fremantle, Western Australia on 22 December 2011. Twenty nine researchers joined here. The ship sailed for the Southern Ocean on 27 December 2011. The ship reached around 60 ° S on 1 January of 2012 and full-scale oceanic observations started to carry out. Main observations were finished on 28 January. The ship arrived in Hobart, Tasmania on 1 February. The Antarctic observation was completed. The researchers of 29 from 9 different organizations including National Institute of Polar attended this voyage. Researches were diverse, particularly global environmental change and the various aspects of ecology were focused based on chemistry, physics and biology. In recent years, significant decline of Arctic sea ice has known and major environmental changes also occurred in the Antarctic. It is important in monitoring environmental changes in Antarctica, which can be relating to global environmental changes. Now, thirty three students who are major in fisheries completed their training course. The training offered not only major ship operation and technical knowledge but also the technical basics of oceanography and observations. The observation of this voyage was done as a part of "Japanese Antarctic Research Project".

Message from the organisers

We have received many positive responses to forming a regional acoustics consortium in the Southeast US and Caribbean. Planning is underway to convene a workshop and forum to welcome members to this new group.

The workshop schedule will include a combination of formal presentations and moderated discussions on marine research and management topics related to applications of active acoustics (e.g., fishery sonars, echosounders).

We invite you to visit the new Consortium website that will serve as an information clearinghouse and will soon provide details on travel and registration for the upcoming workshop (registration is free!).

Please forward this announcement to interested colleagues. We are particularly interested in participation by academic institutions and specifically undergraduate and graduate students that are interested in marine and ocean technologies.

We are working hard to find outside funds to sponsor travel by students. Expect further updates soon in the New Year. We look forward to meeting everyone in March!

The annual meeting of the Asian fisheries acoustics society, AFAS2012 will be held in Busan, South Korea.

2) The 3rd annual meeting of Chinese fisheries acoustics.

Date: 19 Nov 2011.
Venue: Yellow Sea Fisheries Research Institute, China.

The meeting was for Chinese acousticians to make a plan for next year and to discuss how to cooperate. There will be a fresh-water fisheries acoustic conference in Wuhan around Sep of 2012. It will be the first time for the conference to host all scientists working with fresh-water fisheries acoustics. An Echoview team will be there and the Echoview team can arrange an Echoview training during before or after the conference.

Japanese Echoview v5 calibration video

For Japanese users, an Echoview version 5 calibration video in Japanese has been uploaded to YouTube.

The contents of the video include:

1) Auto-calibration

Correct calibration parameters entered in data files logged from:

Simrad RAW (Ex60, ME70)

HTI RAW

Echoview automatically reads calibration parameters from the above data files.

2) Using an ECS file to calibrate manually

Data files are NOT from:

Simrad RAW (Ex60, ME70)

BioSonics DT4

HTI RAW

ECS (Echoview calibration supplement) files should be used for setting calibration parameters in Echoview.

3) What an ECS file is and how to use it

A simple text file that can be edited in Notepad

What is automation?

Tasks that you perform manually in Echoview such as creating EV files, detecting schools and exporting analysis can also be automated.

Automation is achieved in Echoview with a combination of templated dataflows and scripts. Scripts are simply lists of instructions that tell Echoview what to do on your behalf.

Consider how long it would take to manually change the sound speed value across 50 Echoview files, or detect schools according to new settings, or run a new series of exports.

Echoview team member David Millington now based in Europe

Senior Echoview software engineer David Millington is now based in Europe

In the spirit of Echoview's global outlook, David has headed north and west (or east) from Tasmanian shores and can currently be found in Cologne, Germany.

David continues to work unabated on Echoview as before. He recently designed the auto-update feature now available in version 5.1 and is currently working on a new map interface for the cruisetrack view for version 5.2.

Echoview in Europe

Echoview is widely used throughout Europe, and we pride ourselves on delivering knowledgeable and timely support despite the distance from our Tasmania HQ.

This includes training courses and visits in person to discuss your needs.

David now joins Patrick Schneider from Aquason in Barcelona as Echoview's day-to-day presence on the ground in Europe.
