Designer John Galliano in legal battle with lawyers

Fashion designer John Galliano, facing trial for a drunken anti-Semitic rant, is suing his former lawyers for embezzlement and is being counter-sued for defamation, the two sides' legal teams said Friday.

"John Galliano brought a complaint on April 13 for aggravated breach of trust against his former legal counsel" Stephane Zerbib, Galliano's lawyer Aurelien Hamelle told AFP.

Galliano, 50, the former chief designer at the Dior label, accuses Zerbib of embezzling nearly three million euros ($4.4 million) from his own account and one of his companies, a source close to the case said.

Israel's Star of David burnt at Hungary protest

Thousands of protesters of law enforcement agencies and the armed forces demonstrated against the government's austerity programme along with two far-right organisations Friday, burning a Jewish emblem.

The policemen, professional soldiers, customs, prison and civil guards as well as firefighters joined forces to voice their anger with the government's aim to abolish their last privilege -- early retirement.

During the demonstration, a white cloth bearing the Star of David and resembling an Israeli flag was burned, according to Hungarian public television M1.

Several members of the extreme-right militias For a Brighter Future and Defense Force joined the demonstration, according to Hungarian news agency MTI.

Thousands passengers stranded at Ben Gurion airport

All flights from Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion airport resumed on Friday after a 24-hour halt of air traffic caused by a fuel contamination problem.

Israeli authorities were still checking the cause of the contamination which stranded thousands passengers at the airport on Thursday.

Incoming aircraft were ordered to stop in Cyprus, Greece and Jordan, to tap up their fuel tanks so they would later have enough fuel to be able to takeoff from Ben Gurion, while planes from Israeli carriers were unable to depart.

Europe Day: Muslims and Jews denounce extremist parties

Jews and Muslim leaders in France, Britain and several other countries across Europe are to held joint initiatives to denounce extremist parties and oppose racism and prejudice, on the occasion of Europe Day (9 May).

They stand in united opposition to prejudiced and racist appeals being increasingly injected into European body politic by extremist political movements and also oppose pandering to those movements by some political leaders who in recent months have made speeches lamenting the failure of multiculturalism in their respective countries.

This Europe-wide interfaith initiative was set in motion last December at the first gathering of European Muslim and Jewish leaders in Brussels.

Wiesenthal Center honors Tom Cruise, Chilean miner

The Simon Wiesenthal Center has given an award to megastar actor Tom Cruise at a gala ceremony which also honored the foreman of the Chilean miners trapped underground for two months last year.

The celebrity Scientologist was lauded "for his longtime, consistent and substantial support" of the Los Angeles-based center named after Nazi-hunter Wiesenthal, and its Museum of Tolerance.

"For many years now, I have been a supporter of the Simon Wiesenthal Center and the Museum of Tolerance," said Cruise, receiving the Center's Humanitarian Award on Thursday night.

Norway’s Jews oppose circumcision law amendment

The umbrella organization for Jews in Norway is opposing a proposed amendment that would ban ritual circumcision on boys younger than 15.

The Mosaic Religious Community, the umbrella for Norway's Jewish community and Jewish organizations, has sent a letter to Norwegian Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Store and Justice Minister Knut Storberget outlining its opposition to the amendment proposed by the country's state ombudsman for children, the English-language website News and Views from Norway reported.

Netanyahu meets Sarkozy in Paris

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said a peace agreement with the Palestinians can be reached through talks, and not with United Nations’ diktats.

Speaking in Paris, where he met Thursday with French President Nicolas Sarkozy, the Israeli Prime Minister said a possible recognition of a Palestinian state by the United Nations would hinder the peace process.
He said that France wants the new Palestinian unity government between Fatah and Hamas to recognize Israel as a Jewish state and that Sarkozy was committed to not accept a Palestinian government that supports terror.

Nations’ archives launch Nazi-era property portal

A coalition of documentation preservation groups, including national archives from six nations, is launching a portal that accesses records on stolen Nazi-era cultural property.

The portal, called Holocaust International Resources, will be launched formally on Thursday at the National Archives in Washington but already is active online. It accesses material in the archives of the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Belgium and Ukraine.
