In this issue of "Eco-Justice Notes," Rev.
"Dominion" has long been a misunderstood concept, being read as an excuse to treat God's earth in whatever way we see fit. But, with dominion comes responsibility. Given dominion, we are called to be caretakers of the earth. As Dr. Carol Johnston writes in "And the Leaves of the Tree are for the Healing of the Nations,"

"Insofar as human beings do exercise power or dominion over other creatures, it should imitate this creative, redeeming God. According to Job and the Psalmists, God cares for all the creatures, regardless of their usefulness to human beings."

Consider taking Rev. Sawtell's challenge to preach on a just interpretation of "dominion" on June 19. Read Rev. Sawtell's reflections and find more resources.

The new documentary Dirty Business sheds light on the energy industry particularly the unsustainable and unjust nature of energy production and consumption. If you knew that:

Mountaintop Removal mining is razing God's Creation and contaminating communities

Historically, coal fired power plants have been placed in communities of color and low-income communities, adding an extra burden to those who are dealing with historical and societal injustice

The impacts coal has on Creation and communities are estimate to be $330-500 billion a year which is paid for by those who suffer from coal mining and power plant pollution – not the coal industry

And a documentary on the subject

‘Gasland’ Up For Oscar, After Uncovering Dangers In Natural Gas Drilling

Though the chemicals shoved into the ground with massive amounts of water to fracture (frack) the rock and extract the gas, have not been found in drinking water, towns near "fracked" gas wells have shown elevated levels of Methane in their drinking water. That's right, you can light the water on fire in some places and this is the water the people drink.

Questions to ponder and comment on:

Is this the water you want to have in your neighborhood? At your conference center/camp? Is the $ realized through sale of gas rights and the "fracking" of the gas that may be under your center, worth the environmental impact? Would you send your church group or kids to a place that has elevated levels of methane in the drinking water? How do you share this information with others who may want to capitalize on gas revenue?

It's like the logic of having Soda Machines in Public Schools: I have tried to explain the logic (or lack of in my opinion) behind selling gas rights at our conference centers to being like the logic behind having Soda Machines in public schools. Sure the school gets revenue, but studies show that the students get fatter and have higher risk for diabetes in such schools. Is the revenue worth the impact? Now replace soda machine with fracking for gas and schools with conference center and you get my point.

I know I come on strong on this subject, but I do not think that harvesting natural resources such as gas from our centers is in line with the missional ministries of our camps. The financial pressures are growing, but this is not a solution that should be on the table. If this is your only option, you have bigger issues than keeping the conference center open.

I would LOVE for you to call me and discuss this more. It is a topic that comes up more and more in conversations throughout our church.

The Colombia Free Trade Agreement: Presbyterians Speak Up">Reserve your Webinar Seat Now

The Obama Administration is pushing to pass the three Free Trade Agreements – Korea, Colombia and Panama – by summer. The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) is organizing its voice now to speak on behalf of those who do not have a seat at the negotiating table – indigenous groups, small farmers, Colombia’s millions of displaced people and persecuted unionists. Our mission partners in Colombia are calling for the PC(USA) to raise its voice.
Join us to discuss:

• Ways for you to take action on behalf of our sisters and brothers in Colombia;
• How Colombia’s human rights record requires delaying this agreement;
• Why the Presbyterian Church of Colombia opposes the agreement in its present form;
• Why the cost of this agreement is too high for small farmers and others;
• How we as people of faith evaluate trade agreements.

Sign up now to hear from Lisa Haugaard, executive director of the Latin America Working Group; the Rev. Shannan Vance-Ocampo, director of Colombia Programs for the Presbyterian Peace Fellowship, which coordinates the Presbyterian Accompaniment Program on behalf of PC(USA) World Mission; and the Rev. Dr. Alexa Smith, Presbyterian Hunger Program.
