Toxic Toys of 2010

On Thursday, November 18, The Centre for Health, Environment & Justice released a chilling r eport on Toxic Toys of 2010. The study was conducted with the assistance of the Ecology Center of Ann Arbour, Michigan, revealing the results of tests conducted on toys purchased from Toys “R” Us this Fall.

Although Toys “R” Us was the retailer where these samples were purchase these toys are available at retailers across Canada and the United States.

Some of the key findings from this report include:

81% of Fall 2010 toys marketed to infants and toddlers (18-36 months and up) contained chlorine, indicating that they were likely made from PVC.
19% of these toys contained tin, indicating the likely presence of organotins in these toys
72.5% of all toys/children’s products tested contained high levels of chlorine indicating they were likely made of PVC
52.9% of all toy packaging tested contained high levels of chlorine, indicating they were likely made of PVC

Children at Increased Risk from Toxic Chemicals

Unfortunately the segment of the population that these products are marketed to, are the very ones who stand to be harmed the most by them. Young children who are in the early stages of their development with high metabolism and a tendency to put these toys in their mouths are the most vulnerable to toxins released from PVC.

The chemicals released throughout the lifetime of these PVC products include: chlorine gas, vinyl chloride, dioxin, mercury, organotins, phthalates, lead and cadmium.

What does this mean for parents?

With the Holiday Season already underway parents are encouraged to look for safer alternatives to keep their children healthy and entertained.

Read the warning labels.

Look for toys with labels stating that they are free of Phthalates, BPA, etc.

Choose toys that have minimal packaging, packaged in recycled cardboard or other renewable materials.

Everyone is encouraged to download and read the report for themselves and look at the results from the list of popular toys that were tested.

This year with so many product recalls we would like to show our support to the Environmental Working Group, a non-profit organization focused on protecting the most vulnerable members of our population—children, babies, and infants in the womb—from health problems caused by exposure to toxic contaminants.

New ecoPrecious.com Site Launched

After such a great reception at the Green Living Show, we started a complete redesign of our ecoPrecious.com site. We now have much greater flexibility with the design and features so we’ll be making continuous improvements throughout the year.

Due to popular demand, we now carry a natural green, genuine baltic amber teething necklace. It is an extremely beautiful product that we are proud to offer. Matching adult necklaces are available in both the cherry and green amber, which can be purchased individually or as part of a parent and child gift set.

We’re still tweeking the content so we would love to hear from you. We appreciate feedback so don’t hesitate to leave a comment or email us.

Hidden Chemicals in Perfumes

As we became more consistent label-readers, we started noticing how bad the labelling standards are in Canada. Manufacturers get away with hiding ingredients under headings such as “Artifical Colours”, “Artificial Flavours”, and “Parfum”.

Organizations such as the David Suzuki Foundation and the Environmental Working Group with their Skin Deep Cosmetics Database have been advocating on behalf of consumers, in attempts to hold cosmetic manufacturers to higher standards and accountability.

It scares me that we’re giving our children medication that is not well controlled by manufacturers. After negotiations with the FDA, McNeil issued this voluntary recall, unfortunately a recall was issued last year as well: The Toronto Star (2010 recall), McNeil from mcneilproductrecall.com (2010 – Culprits list lot numbers so you can check the bottle), The Inquisitr notes that with the 2009 recall the company knew about the problems for over a year without taking any action, Tylenol Lot numbers from NowPublic.com. In an effort to minimize the use of over-the-counter drugs, we use Amber Teething Necklaces for pain relief on each of our daughters.

Green Living Show - Booth 237

Well we wrapped up our first physical appearance as ecoPrecious.com! What a thrill to meet so many like-minded parents. I felt like it gave real validation to all the hard work Matt and I have been putting into our company.

We’ve been getting a lot of great support and feedback which I always welcome, but it was a great opportunity for us to go out and meet our customers.

We also had the pleasure of making some wonderful business contacts that I am looking forward to working with in the near future. In all the show was a wonderful opportunity and we learned a great deal from our participation in such a large tradeshow.

With renewed enthusiasm Matthew and I are looking onward to bigger and better things. The first of which is the coming launch of our new site and our new summer product launch!
