I’m not sure this is all we shot this day. I do love this photo though.

This is most likely the day we shot this highly loaded dialogue from Ed; “We’ll have a Bloody Mary first thing, get a bite at the King’s Head, grab a couple at The Little Princess, stagger back here and bang… we’re back at the bar for shots.”

We took all day to write that little speech setting up the rest of the movie. I am loving all the recent GIF sequences that have broken the foreshadowing down. Makes it all worth it.

Our days at Ealing continue. This is the only scene where Nick Frost is not wearing the ‘I GOT WOOD’ t-shirt. The fruit machine he’s playing is real and actually called ‘Ooh Aah Dracula’.

On ITV they change Ed’s line from ‘Can I get any of you cunts a drink?’ to ‘Can I get any of you cocks a drink?’. I think that is sexist.

Ten years ago today, Nick Frost said ‘It’s not the end of the world’.

This summer at the movies, it feels like it is.

Ten years ago today on the ‘Shaun’ shoot, our movie became an Ealing Comedy by default. Ealing Studios in West London had been the home to classic 40′s and 50′s comedies like ‘Kind Hearts And Coronets’ and ‘The Ladykillers’. Now we were hoping some of that magic would rub off.

Ealing is a great little studio and for all its classic film history, it had a lot TV shows shot on the premises, such as the classic ‘Porridge’. In 2001 we shot the second series of ‘Spaced’ here.

As you can see by the page count above, this is also the part of the shoot where we have to cover a lot of ground a day. It got tough shooting on this stage sometimes but we’ll get to that later.

For now enjoy Shaun having a pint at the Winchester and waiting for this to all blow over.

That’s right. We still weren’t done with Fairfield Road and the garden scene. Ambitious outdoor filming and the British weather are not the greatest bedfellows.

So we had ourselves another go at throwing multiple objects at Mary & The Hulking Man.

You will be pleased to know that both Nicola Cunningham and Mark Donovan appear in ‘The World’s End’. Keep your eyes peeled for them.

This I remember as being a tough night.

It might look like less than 1 and a half pages was very doable but…

Night shoots can be tricky and on this night we had lots of zombies, the army, fire effects and a crane shot.

Now you might think ‘I don’t remember a crane shot in this sequence’ and you’d be right. We spend a third of the night shooting a crane shot that ended up being shaved in half in the edit because it slowed the scene down. David Dunlap the DP warned me of this and he was right.

The result? I didn’t get enough coverage of the rest of the scene. June 11th is close to the shortest night of the year, so we had about 6 hours of actual night and then we were out of time when the sun came up.

So I had the crane shot, the basic coverage of Shaun, Liz and Yvonne, about two shots of the army arriving and nothing else. I remember ending on our last night at the Duke Of Albany thinking I hadn’t ‘got’ the scene.

I actually went into the pub as we were wrapping and had a pint of beer on my own at 6am. No-one got a still of that sad image.

The happy end to this story? We did a test screening in the autumn. The audience loved it but didn’t care for this ending as it petered out to nothing. So that gave me the ammunition to suggest we shoot more footage and then in January 2004 we did exactly that. So if you watch again you’ll notice lots of shots of the army arriving, killing zombies, Yvonne hitting twin zombies and close up of machine guns and squibs. That was all shot around six months later on a stage.

The footage that remains from this night is half of that crane shot, Simon and Kate’s coverage, the army knocking down a zombie in a truck and the final shot of them walking off hand in hand. The rest came later.

EDGAR WRIGHT TAKEOVER | LINE-UP ANNOUNCEMENT & TICKETS ON SALE – MONDAY AT 13:00.

On Monday 10th June we’ll finally be announcing the full line-up & putting tickets on sale for our 16 1/2 hour EDGAR WRIGHT TAKEOVER!

The TAKEOVER will be taking place on Saturday 6th July at 19:30, and will finish at 12:00 the following afternoon.

This will be an epic marathon of epic epicness and if you’re a fan of Edgar Wright’s films and TV work, you will NOT want to miss this.

The first night shoot at the Winchester Tavern and a lot of rather tricky bits to do. Rain machines on top of night-time lighting is a sure fire way to lose hours and hours of actual shooting.

This is a great 180 panorama shot of the Duke Of Albany location transformed into the Winchester Tavern. We chose this pub because it was on a corner and so you got a very imposing image of it.

On this day ten years ago we shot the ‘White Lines’ scene. We had no back up for the song if the clearance had been denied.

Below you can see the shot of the growing zombies hordes that are seen in the ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’ section.

And we’re back in Monson Road in New Cross again. We completely shut down the road around the Duke Of Albany pub while shooting this scene.

One of the reasons we chose the Duke Of Albany is because it had a park opposite it. Within this we constructed the fence matching the one in Northumberland Road in Barnet. That location is 15 miles away north of the river. So when Shaun is climbing the children’s slide to look over the fence, it’s a huge jump from North to South London.

We had to shoot the crane shot with the zombies outside the pub on this day. This was a herculean effort on the part of the make up and costume team getting close to 200 zombies ready on not a big budget.

So at the very back of the shot, we drafted in some of the local kids who had previously thrown objects at the crew. They were very enthusiastic to be in the movie. Zombies: Bringing people together.

Oh my lord, this was a big Sunday. Monson Road in New Cross was the first day shooting outside The Winchester. In the words of Marti DiBergi, ‘don’t look for it, it’s not there anymore’, for the Duke Of Albany pub that doubled for our boozer has been long demolished.

Here’s the amazing Michael Smiley playing a zombie Tyres. Clearly his use of speed was not enough to help him outrun the zombies. You will be glad to know that Michael Smiley returns in ‘The World’s End’.

This was the first day of the shoot where we had a large number of extras and we really owe this movie to all the friends, family and fans of ‘Spaced’ who came down to work for nothing and be zombies. Without them we would have no movie. So if you were one of the horde, thank you again!

Interestingly Monson Road is squarely in Millwall FC territory and the call sheet warned you not to wear football shirt of any rival team. Somehow this was more terrifying than any zombies.

I do remember on the first day that some of the local kids were not too happy about the huge influx of cast, crew and flesheaters. During the steadicam shot of the gang impersonating zombies, some started throwing objects at the camera in an attempt to ruin the shot. One or two takes were stopped because of the operator or camera being hit. Luckily the mood toward us would change later in the week…
