This week in class, I mentioned Doodle 4 Google to the kids. It's a chance to design one of Google's special logos that appear on their search page. Check out the contest rules and see if your child wants to doodle!

Welcome to Doodle 4 Google, a competition where we invite K-12 students to use their artistic talents to think big and redesign Google’s homepage logo for millions to see. At Google, we believe that dreaming about future possibilities leads to tomorrow’s leaders and inventors, so this year we're inviting U.S. kids to exercise their creative imaginations around the theme, "What I’d like to do someday…"

Two New Sessions for 1st-5th Grade, Jan-March 2011!

New! Two sessions, more grades

1st – 3rd Graders* Jan 12 – March 2, in Room 7, led by Kirsti Haugen
4th – 5th Graders* Jan 26 – March 16, in Room 8, led by Zanne Miller
Class Time: Wednesdays, 1:05 - 2:35
Cost: $90 / 8 weeks – a limited scholarship fund is available; please contact us if scholarship assistance and/or multiple payments would make it possible for your child to attend.
Registration: Fill out a form & return it to the office with payment (cash or check to Kirsten Haugen) &/or scholarship request by 3:30 pm, Monday, January 10.
Enrollment forms are available now! Download and print one here or pick one up at school. A limited number were distributed to classes for interested students, so you might also find one in your child's backpack!

Enrollment is very limited. If over-enrolled, we will use a lottery. We will let you know if your child has a spot. *We reserve the right to offer your child a spot in either session to create a balanced enrollment for both sessions.

John Scieszka's Rough Drafts

Have you heard of The Stinky Cheese Man, Science Verse, or The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs? The author Jon Scieszka has published his books all over the world. He's good, right? I've shown one of his third drafts here. Look at all those changes! And check out the other six of Scieszka's rough drafts (scroll past the pictures of his brothers to the bottom of the page) to see how much he puts into revising!

Being a good writer doesn't mean it's easy or that you can make it 'perfect' the first time. It's not the same as being a good speller. It means you get your ideas down, you re-read them, you ask others to look at your work and give you suggestions, and you keep improving until you're satisfied you've done the best you can.

I know you guys have great ideas, and the world is just waiting for you to share them!

Two Fall Classes, Two Fall Editions!

As of October 13, we now have two sections of Edison Student Publishers running on Wednesday afternoons. Kirsti's group, which started in September, will have a fall edition out shortly before Thanksgiving. Zanne's group, which started today, will publish their edition just before the winter holidays.

The next open class will start after the Winter holidays and it will include younger students!

New Fall 2010 Class Offered!

We are pleased to announce a second fall 2010 section of Edison Student Publishers. Zanne Miller will be teaching a new 8-week session, also on Wednesdays from 1:00 – 2:35, October 13 – December 8, in Room 7. Sign-ups available online, across from the office and from your child's teacher.

Zanne is a writer, editor and producer and mom to Julia and Clio. She has worked as a newspaper reporter, magazine editor, communications director, and college instructor and has taught journalism and creative writing to 8-to-12 year-olds, college students, and senior citizens. She regularly writes for Oregon Quarterly, the online food magazine Culinate, and Oregon Family as well as for a number of non-profit clients in Oregon. She started her first newsletter at age 9.

Create the next edition of the Edison Light Bulb, a print- and web-based school publication. Work together during our after school program to produce your choice of news, reviews, comics, fiction, poetry, interviews, photography, editorials, surveys, illustrations, advertising, jokes, puzzles, & more! Share your best ideas & talents, and learn new ways to use cool tools of all kinds!
• Who: Edison students in 3rd-5th grade. Please note: space is very limited, so we may use a lottery to determine enrollment.

Our October 2009 issue was the first ever created in ONE day! Ten students took advantage of a no-school day to work from 9 am to 2:30 pm to create this issue, including a special group feature on Smoothies and Trail Mix, which also gave us the opportunity for a tasty snack!
