California Design @ LACMA

Living in a midcentury ranch required me to check out the California Design exhibition at LACMA (part of the larger Pacific Standard Time collaboration of cultural institutions across Southern California.) It was again very inspiring and tugged at the creative strings within me. What an experience to see actual Eames furniture, a portion of the Eames home, and Eichler floor plans in person! Even the audio/visual stations had earphones which were nostalgic of that era. Me, AdB, and some friends also happened to stumble upon Metropolis! See pics below.

Hello "Editors!"

Today is the start of my very own process of "editing!" I'm very excited to share this experience will all of you. I hope that you gain some knowledge and notable tips for styling and editing yourself.

I think this is a good way to wear brown and black. The black makes the pink and camel colors pop. My professional dress code is Business Casual but I like to have lots of fun with it.

For those of you who don't know, LL Bean has a line called LL Bean Signature which has some great pieces. The line isn't massive or anything but it has some classic, solid pieces to get you through a few years. I love my brown oxfords from AdB last year!

Series - Help! I don't know what to wear this with

My friend Carrie submitted this skirt as her 'What to wear this with?' piece. Carrie says, "I recently purchased this skirt for my upcoming trip to Thailand. It will be very hot and humid there (even though we're going in February), so I need light and airy clothing. I love wearing sundresses and skirts all summer long, but don't have any skirts like this one; the pattern is bolder than what I usually wear. What style of top and and what type of shoes would you suggest? Also, what is best for accessories? Thank you so much for your advice!"

I chose this color palette: Mustard yellow, navy blue, grey, and white. I feel that these colors tone down the ultra femininity of the skirt. The light, long sweaters-be it long sleeve or short sleeve-will be the perfect cover up for the hot weather. The cardigan should be near the length of the skirt. I would pair a tissue tank in either heather grey or white with the 'challenge' skirt and sweater. Keep sandals simple and comfy, and keep accessories to gold tones or earth tones. Pictured is my friend Megan. (Hi Megan!) She came to me with the American Apparel skater dress as her challenging piece, and indeed it was. It's too short to wear on its own as a proper dress, and the back is open like a deep scoop neck. This dress is very much a figure skater dress.
Megan wanted a look that she could wear for an evening out that showed off the dress and was comfortable. The solution...Jeggings - a current trend! Jeggings provide a solution to the length issue without creating bulk, and make the outfit more appropriate for going out than regular leggings would. A light grey tank underneath the dress takes care of the open back issue and also breaks up all the black. Finally, the look is pulled together with a long, purple sweater. Done and done. :)

During a recent trip to the Citadel Outlets, I bought this Chambray henley shirt dress (in blue) from American Apparel. I'm looking forward to wearing it with some sandals and large sunnies! I love the way it is paired with a brown belt in the photo of Vanessa Hudgens. I imagine it being quite nice for lunch and shopping.
...I also really want these Chinese Laundry sandals! I think that will have to be my next purchase.

Stain treatments

Here are my basic rules of thumb for stains:

If it's something pretty ordinary like chocolate or sauce, then I would use the Shout Ultra Gel (stick form). I love that you can let it sit in your hamper for up to a week! Just treat it and put away until laundry day.

If the stain is more severe (like red wine or melted butter/grease) or the article of clothing is more delicate, then I typically look online for tips. I have found that dish washing liquid is great on grease stains. Recently, I spilled a ton of melted butter on one of my cotton dresses. Immediately, I treated the dress with dish washing liquid (Palmolive is what we had under the sink) and then threw it in the washing machine using Tide Coldwater...I was so shocked at how well that worked!!! It took out the stain completely.

Salt does wonders with red wine stains. Also, I have had light sweaters that have been stained with wine and I ran extremely hot water through the stain until is was out.

Important: When dealing with trial and error stain removal, do not dry the piece of clothing as that will automatically set the stain.

*A bonus tip: Use Shout Color Catcher when you are washing clothing for the first time and you believe that it may bleed. This will absorb the color preventing it from staining/dyeing your other clothes. I feel assured when I put in something quite bold with older clothing that I wouldn't want dyed.

The brown tote bag that Anne Hathaway is carrying is perfect for city dwelling, can carry alot but not too much. Don't want to get weighed down. She uses it throughout most of the movie and it looks great with every look especially since she wore mostly blues, greens, and yellows.

Probably my favorite outfit. I love the pairing of the sweater with navy sleeves and navy dress. The gold buttons on the sweater are a nice touch too. She is wearing gold flats with this outfit.

Same as the first picture but here she is wearing black striped tights with the green trench. In other photos, you see that she is wearing tall knee high heeled boots to pull it all together. I also really loved the way her hairstyle complemented each look.

My latest obsession is the Maxi Dress. I love all the colors and prints they come in. So bohemian, cute, and comfy. At the least, try one on! They are very flattering.

For the last few weeks, I've been in search of a romper or 'onesie.' For those who aren't familiar with that term, it is basically a top and shorts one-piece. American Apparel has a couple of cute ones. I found mine in Vegas and I can't wait to wear it once it gets warmer. This will look great with some gladiator sandals and a light sweater.
