This podcast is focused on the COPE strategy for professional development. COPE is an acronym for the following:
Collaboration– with other peers, mentors, and experts. Find people that are close and available that you can trust with the every day questions.

Organizations– Look for education organizations, specifically in your subject area, that you can join and use as a resource. They will often give you a subscription to a professional journal for your subject area, and these are often filled with tons of information and resources totally geared at what you’re doing every day in the classroom. Every teacher should be a member of their professional organization. More generic education organizations can be helpful as well.

Periodicals– I already mentioned the journals of professional organizations, but normal magazines off the rack at the local bookstore or library can also be a great resource for information on the latest developments in a given field of study.

Education– Whether formal or informal, continuing your education in your own subject area, as well as in the newest developments in cognitive research and education, is critical. Don’t be fooled into believing that 120 credit hours will prepare you for 30 years in the classroom. As an educator, develop a love for learning yourself- and commit to becoming a lifelong learner.

Classroom Web Sites are an amazing way to extend your reach outside the walls of your classroom. I’m really excited about this podcast because doing my classroom website was one of the most significant steps in becoming an innovative educator. This podcast will discuss the pros and cons of a classroom website, give tips on what to include, and practical steps on how to implement your site.During the podcast I mentioned a particular web host who is giving away free hosting space to educators. That host is LunarPages.com. You can find out about their free education hosting at The LunarPages Website .

Other free education hosts I found that offer free hosting are:

Classjump.com
DotEasy
12wonderwebservices.com
Schoolnotes.com
Freeteacherwebsites.com
Classroomlink.net

I’m sure there’s many more, try searching Google for free education hosts or free teacher hosting and you should be able to find a few more. Here’s a link to an Education World article on free web site creation: Click Here to visit the page.

And I also mentioned my favorite web building software, Studio 8 by Adobe and my first web page software, the free Netscape Composer. Again, a Google search will yield dozens of hits on a search for “free web design software” or “free HTML editor.” Remember you only need these tools if you’re going to get a free host that requires you to FTP your pages up. Many of the sites allow you to use simple online tools to build your website.

Classroom websites are easy and fun. You can get started for free, so what are you waiting for? Give it a try!

The web is revolutionizing the world. Can you believe it’s really only about 20 years that the internet was available to consumers? This podcast talks about how to find information on the internet and effectively use search engines and web directories, internet safety in the classroom, and some interesting developments coming soon to a web connection near you!A couple of the web directories we talked about in the podcast are Yahoo’s Directory and the Open Directory Project.

For a history of searching for web information and great background information, check the Wikipedia entry. Also check out the following pages for info on advanced search engine techniques:

Learn The Net’s search tutorials
Searchengineshowdown’s page on searching tips

A great lesson plan that you can use to teach these advances searching techniques in the classroom can be found at AT&T’s Knowledge Network.

Also in the show, I mentioned that example of the student who found the page that looked credible, but suggested that the Holocaust never happened. Here’s an article from the sake guy that did the workshop at my school 8 years ago! The article can be found at Alan November’s website . Another great article on the subject of evaluating information validity can be found at The Virtual Chase .

A couple articles and websites on online safety for kids can be found at the following sites. Make sure you check out Cybersmart’s web page and look at their free K-8 Curriculum!! Some other great sites are:

Examples of cool Web2.0 sites. Note the powerful value of collaboration on many of these sites, and the emphasis of popular opinion on rank and value of information and resources on these sites. That’s an important aspect of this emerging generation (some call it “postmodern”) and therefore an important aspect of these sites as well:

This podcast discusses administrative software for the classroom, focusing on comprehensive gradebook packages. The new gradebook packages available to teachers today are really an incredible addition to the sea of software for educators, managing grades, attendance, lesson plans and more. This podcast discusses how to choose a software package, how to best implement the gradebook software for maximum impact in teaching and learning, and also how to generate reports and look at gradebook data to maximize the use of data driven feedback for students.

Some popular packages for gradebook software are:

Gradebook 2 by Excelsior
GradeQuick by Jackson
Easy Grade Pro by Orbit
Master Grade by Maximum

And of course, there’s always the option to use spreadsheet templates to manage grades as well. Here are a few examples of tutorials and templates available online:

Penn State’s tutorials for Excel gradebooks.

This podcast is on what to think about when buying a Personal Computer. Many people don’t take the time to think about what they really intend to do with their computer before they purchase it, and normally end up paying too much buying a computer that’s way beyond their needs. This podcast gives some practical tips on what to think about before shopping, how to think about your budget, and covers some practical tips to consider when shopping for a PC.

In the podcast I mentioned some prices on some parts and I’ve been asked where I get all the great prices on computer hardware and upgrades. I use two primary sources for all my personal buying; I use Newegg (http://www.newegg.com) and I also browse the sales at local stores at SalesCircular.com (http://www.salescircular.com). Both of these sites will help you find the best deal available for the parts you need.

If you’re shopping for a complete computer, be sure to check out Dell (http://www.dell.com) and Apple (http://www.apple.com) – both offer special pricing for educators. Make sure you call and talk to the educational division before committing to a purchase.
