Delicious No More?
I have been using Delicious, a social bookmarking service, for sometime now. It is a great tool for discovering new news online.
Delicious is not as sexy as other social media tools because Yahoo owns it. OK seriously now; Delicious is not in the radar for most people is because it is meant mainly for serious readers. Which brings me to the point of reading. With all the distractions in the Internet - games, YouTube, Skype - it is hard to sit down and read through an article online. I bet that if one needs to scroll down to read further, the likelihood of that article being read is very slim.
So how can we address this issue? Tablet devices.
I think iPad is a great example of how the future of reading might be. iPad tries to mimic a book. There is certainly a reason why that interface works for reading. We still like:
- - To ‘flip’ a page with our fingers.
- - Have a keyboard-less ‘book’.
- - Read without scrolling.
- - Read without advertisements.
Coming back to Delicious, why it cannot make all the bookmarked articles into book-like interface? I think it will be a great value-add for the tool.

Phone Nokia?
In the smart phone arena, Nokia is in trouble. Earlier this year, I lost my iPhone 3GS and bought a second-hand Nokia 5800 Navigation Edition from eBay. I was hoping to use the phone until the new iPhone4 is available.
The two months I was with the phone it caused me much heartache. The phone was probably one of Nokia’s top phone model (at that time); and it could not facilitate hassle-free Internet surfing!
I have many more grumbles about the phone, but the most damaging grievance I have must be its data-roaming feature - you simply cannot switch is off!!
Since I do not know how to switch the data-roaming off, so when the first time I carry the phone to Malaysia, I cautious of not doing anything that might incur data-roaming charges. But somehow I incurred charges.
The second time I was in Malaysia, I switch the phone off. I only switch it on to see if I got any miscall or SMS; and I immediately switch the phone off after about a minute of checking. Again, I incurred data charges!
Hence, it is no wonder why Nokia is losing market share. First to iPhone, then to Android, and now to Phone7. I use to like Nokia phones, but not anymore.

The 2010 Person?
So Time’s Person of the Year 2010 is Mark Zuckerberg. I totally agree it is indeed the year of Facebook. With more than 500 million users, it is truly a force to be reckoned with.
More importantly, Facebook is fast becoming a advertiser’s partner of choice. With a captive audience and precise insights of its users, Facebook is a dream proposition for products and services propagandas.
Once upon a time, many pundits say that Google will rule the world. Now that prediction looks less likely to happen, because Facebook will be running things.
Google has several things going against it:
- There is lack of the social element with Google’s current offerings.
- Besides doing email, people do not spend much time with its other tools.
- Searching activity is fast becoming a utility function.
So will some other cooler application ‘rule’ the world after Facebook? You betcha!

I have been talking about location-based service for some time now. Although the enthusiasm has subsided a little in Singapore, but the pace has actually picked up in the US.
Gowalla is probably the second major player after Foursquare in this arena. So it is actually surprising to know that for Gowalla’s iPhone app, it integrates closely with Foursquare. I am a user of both application, and I have to say the Gowalla’s offering is better but its main drawback is the small user base.
I am not sure if Foursquare will become protective and cripple its API. If it does so then it will be another instance of fearing innovation and competition when you are a big player. We have seen it in Microsoft and Facebook, and I hope the infant location-based applications do not fall into this psyche.

A Model View?
Microsoft ASP.NET MVC 2.0 provides a new Model-View-Controller (MVC) framework for web development. And I have been trying out the MVC lately and I can tell you that it is not as easy and fast development.
The ASP.NET MVC rendition has some nice features (e.g. the domain routing). MVC certainly gives you lots of flexibility in terms of separating the functions of display (i.e. presentation layer) with logic (business logic and database layers). But the main drawback is definitely it is tedious and slow.
As I have mentioned before, if you are a big organisation (that is probably working with EJBs) then this maybe this is for you. However, if you have a small team (i.e. one-man show) and speed of the essence then this will not work.
So in my opinion, the original ASP.NET Web Form development approach will still be with us for some time. Sorry MVC, but for most people, speed is more important in the Internet age.

BBC Podcast
Podcast has been around for more than 5 years. Some people say that podcast will die once video dominates. Well, TV dominates but radio still has its place, just in the case for podcast.
I think podcast will be around for a long time. This is because people just like to listen and not necessarily watch things. A case in point is music and not MTV. We may like Taylor Swift but may not want to watch her MTV again and again. (Anyway others may ‘like’, but I simply adore her. She is the most beautiful song!!).
Listening touches the other sense that we seldom use. In music, our souls are lifted, our tensions subside, we are transported to a different place…
Listening also helps us to overcome the routine of work, like mopping the floor, driving to work, etc. So we gained something while doing menial work that does not require absolute concentration or mental exercise. And for this, I listen to podcasts from BBC, PBS, 60 Minutes, and The Economist.
Podcast is here to stay because it helps us to kill two birds with one stone.

Make Web Not War?
I just attended a web developer event at the wonderfully-located-with-breathtaking-view Microsoft training venue of One Marina Boulevard. The session intention was to educate web developers about the Microsoft Web Platform with ASP.NET MVC 2.0.
It is nice to see that MVC is taken seriously. However, I am not sure if such solution is suitable for most organizations. It is complex and may take a longer time to develop. I would imagine that this approach is affordable only to enterprise organizations that require robust website.

Mark of Privacy?
Although I was one of the many people that was unhappy with the way Facebook is handling its user’s privacy issue, nevertheless I felt sorry watching Mark Zuckerberg being grilled at the D8 Conference.
Evidently, he was hotly grilled to the extend that he took off his trademark hoodie. (Just image if Steve Jobs took off his turtleneck shirt, now that must be a sight!). But to be fair, Facebook got it coming. They had been delaying looking into this issue for a long time.
And additionally, to be fair, my feel is these concerns are being loudly raised by “old” folks. Youngsters are not really preoccupied with their data being made available. Their view is: since there are so many information out there, it is no use being so worked up about it.
I truly enjoy Coke, live in TIong Bahru, am a die-hard fan of Liverpool FC, listen to BBC podcasts, and just bought a book by Henry Petroski. So if someone out there know these information, will I still want to have control of who knows what from my Facebook account? Emm, yes.

I mentioned earlier about the not so useful Twitter (in Singapore context), but let us look at the wider context. One of the big discovery, albeit inadvertently, is crowd sourcing. The wisdom of the crowd, as some would say.
