Technology is changing your brain - and the brains of your learners. So where does that leave education? Are we adequately preparing learners for the workforce of the future?

Make sure you and your brain don’t miss out on the Mind over Matter seminar in Sydney on Tuesday, 26 August. If you haven’t registered yet — you have until <a href="http://educationau.edu.au/jahia/Jahia/pid/646"target="_blank" >close of business this Friday, 22 August to grab a spot.

If you have registered — there are a few accounts available for free wireless access, but we need to know if you want/need it by NOON ACST tomorrow (Wednesday 20 August). Send an email to <a href="http://blogs.educationau.edu.au/seminar/sbradley@educuationau.edu.au"target="_blank" >sbradley@educuationau.edu.au
For you bloggers, Tweeters, Flickr-ers and taggers — the tags for the day are mind_over_matter and eduauseminars

If you and your brain can’t make it to the event - we will be Live Blogging all day on this blog — starting from 9am AEST. You can not only get a summary of the presentations and discussion, but can ask questions and make comments live during the event. The results will be archived. We’ve done this for past events such as the National E-portfolio Symposium - <a href="http://blogs.educationau.edu.au/kjohnson/2008/06/05/participate-in-the-national-e-portfolio-symposium-here/"target="_blank" >see the archive on my education.au KerryJ’s blog site.

This conference brought together an eclectic mix of people from across disciplines of studies, countries and areas of work and government. The Creative Commons Australia team organised the free one-day symposium to explore the emerging Australasian Commons. The day was also significant in that Creative Commons (CC), in association with Creative Commons Australia, officially announced the release of the Case Studies Project. At the conference the project was announced with the launch of the booklet of some of the global case studies. The project invites the CC Community to go to the wiki and share stories about how they use CC on a daily basis. It is definitely worth a look as it highlights the multitude of fantastic ways CC is changing the way we are accessing and providing access to information.

A series of short case studies from Australia were presented at the conference including:

The Queensland governments <a href="http://blogs.educationau.edu.au/seminar/"title="http://www.oesr.qld.gov.au/about-our-services/policy/gilf-project.shtml" >GILF project. GILF - Government Information Licensing Framework - the project is set to lead the world in establishing a new approach to public sector information licensing

youdecide2007 a nonprofit citizen journalism initiative led by the Creative Industries faculty at QUT

The exciting Pool Project - an ABC project, which is still in Beta at the moment. Pool is a collaborative/creative place/space for people to share digital stories - a multimedia experience aimed at opening up the media sharing space. The project works with Radio National - finding out what producers needs are in the new world - while engaging with a young audience.

The day also included reports from CC Jurisdictions in Australasia by:

Jane Hornibrook and Louise O’Brien, CC Aotearoa New Zealand

Prof Chunyan Wang, CC China Mainland

Rami Olwen, CC Jordan.

The two panel presentations: Creative Commons and Education and Creative Commons and Music provided a springboard for discussions in the nine separate workshops. The workshop leaders provided a facilitated report - with the outcome of these discussions providing the Creative Commons Australia team with significant work and challenges to continue with. A great day with lots of great networking, good food and entertainment completing the day.

Gavin Cooney, CEO Learnosity presented his paper - Use of Mobile Phones for Language Learning and Assessment for Learning, a Pilot Project - at the mlearn conference in Melbourne. Gavin outlined the work the company has undertaken with the National Council for Curriculum Assessment (NCCA) to assist with the assessement of Irish language skills. The paper co-written by Gavin Cooney and Katrina Keogh from NCCA for the mlearn conference is available on the Learnosity site.

What is really interesting is that this is not just about assessing student learning but providing the opportunity for students and teachers to really engage in the learning cycle using adaptive formative e-assessment. For example,

Students are encouraged to podcast their responses so they can be involved in a review process of their language learning

Exemplary answers from student can be easily used as learning examples for other students

The assessment is all voice based with the ability for the system to use voiceprint, i.e ability for the system to know who is talking.

67% or students and teachers stated students had made progress in speaking as a result of participating in the project.

95% of students enjoyed using the technology.

Learnosity has been working with the NSW Board of Studies since 2002 in the area of e-assessment.

Professor Angela McFarlane delivered the opening keynote presentation at the mlearn conference - making the connections in Melbourne 17 October 2007.

The presentation provided participants at the conference with an overview of the work in progress that Angela McFarlane is undertaking with 3 primary schools and 2 secondary schools in the UK, funded by BECTA.

The project is working intensively with teachers, with the research looking at:

what happens to teachers and learners when handheld devices enter their lives

making sense of what is happening

what pedagogical changes might take place.

Emerging themes from the research include:

Question of mobility, eg motivation level of students to take work away with them, questions of ergonomics (the stylus for PDAs not easy to use - students replacing stylus with pens + pencils which were easier to hold and use but not good for the PDA screen)

Question of choice - relates to autonomy and ownership

Ready store of prior work as an aid to reflection

Ready access to a range of applications in a range of places.

Issues which have emerged from the research to date have included:

“shoehorning” learning into technology doesn’t work

potential for learning with devices is not yet being fully exploited

need to teach students about meaningful file name conventions and choices about archiving

need to build in iteration, ie going back and using information that has been stored and saved for further reflection.

McFarlane’s observation from her research is that - Effective teachers use technologies effectively.

Angela McFarlane referred to Hilda Kruger’s flowchart of technology supported activites. See link to Kruger’s map of technologies supporting academics to include resources that might contribute to information literacy.

The following link is to Angela McFarlane’s keynote presentation at Building Learning Communities in Boston MA, July 2007. In the address Angela discusses online communities of learning.

This podcast features Howard Rheingold’s keynote presentation at the Australian School Library Association (ASLA) Biennial Conference - Hearts on Fire - held in Adelaide 2-5 October.

Howard’s presentation at the ASLA conference provided participants with a journey through the evolution of human communication and the ability to organise collective action. Outlining how the development of the ability to communicate, coordinate, organise and build - new forms of economic production emerged.

The narrative Howard Rheingold builds provides a range of different examples to show the potential of collaboration and social networking. He also talks about the challenge of literacies in the future - “to introduce people to the broad interdisciplinary understanding of how we do things together.” It is this challenge where he sees that librarians have a major role to play in linking disciplines together.

After listening to Howard Rheingold’s presentation - watch - Information R/evolution - a short video by Michael Wesch (you will probably remember seeing another video Wesch produced Web 2.0…The Machine is Us/ing Us) - the video provides a representation of the development of information and communication - the final frame of the video asks us - the viewer - if we are ready for the Information R/evolution.

Another video on YouTube by Michael Wesch, which is definitely worth a look at is A Vision of Students Today

This podcast features the fireside chat with Greg Black, CEO education.au and Howard Rheingold at the education.au seminar - A vision for the future - held in Melbourne Tuesday 2 October.

The chat covers a range of topics including:

critical issues for maximising the benefits of ICT for learning

strategies for mainstreaming innovative practices

and insight into Howard Rheingold’s personal aspirations.

During the chat Greg Black invites Howard to elaborate further on any issues from his keynote presentation in the morning. In doing so Howard talks further about the historical movement from writing through to the printing press and the internet and the changes this has made to collective action today. He goes on to say how the merging of the internet, the mobile phone and the digital computer is making things possible that we wouldn’t have imagined a few years ago.

Howard also talks about important trends to keep our eye on - ways in which people are doing things together in new ways.

The last question from a participant at the seminar asked what his next book might focus on if he was to write a next book - Howard’s answer - Cooperation and collective action.

This podcast features Howard Rheingold’s keynote presentation in Melbourne on Tuesday 2 October.

In this presentation Howard Rheingold talks about the two phenomenon which are becoming very important when we bring the world of education and the world of the internet together. These phenomenon include the:

Critical reading skills necessary in the era of the search engine as the internet has shifted the focus of responsibility for determining the authority of the text from the publisher and the library to the reader.

Need for an education based rather than a regulation based response to the moral panics over young people being online.

Howard Rheingold also says that in an age of participatory media it is essential for education to teach students the connection between citizenship and media literacy skills. By learning how to use media production and distribution technologies students will be able to develop a public voice about issues they care about.

The keynote speaker for this seminar is Howard Rheingold - who first identified the impact of the internet in his groundbreaking book ‘The Virtual Community’.

Having forecast the explosion of the internet years before it occurred, Howard Rheingold is now predicting that the most important innovation for the information age in the near future will not be hardware or software but social practice.

Howard Rheingold has been working in the online world since the 1980’s, ‘….looking for new ways to connect with other people’. Last week I met Howard at the eDayz conference in Adelaide where he delivered his first keynote at the eDayz conference in Adelaide (his last visit to Australia was over 10 years ago).

Check out Michael Coghlan at Podding Downunder - Michael shares a few thoughts on Howard’s plenary session at eDayz.

Howard also delivered two workshops at the conference on the second day. At the workshop, I attended, he introduced himself to participants as a lifelong learner - inviting everyone to join in a conversation about the nuances of teaching and learning. He shared his recent experience of learning how to produce video and the connections he had made with people along this journey - giving us a look at some of the products of this work. Howard also shared some of the hazards and pitfalls of developing video.

What was particularly special about this workshop was the way in which Howard Rheingold also set the backdrop for the conversation between participants. He had shared a story about his learning journey and then invited others to comment - to join in the conversation. The stories connected, digressed, elaborated, agreed, built on the conversation around teaching and learning - leaving behind plenty more to talk about.

Howard showed a small snippet of a video about teaching and learning in Second Life - it would be great to watch the whole thing.

Don’t miss out on meeting and hearing Howard Rheingold - he will be the keynote speaker the education.au seminar in Melbourne - Tuesday 2 October
