During Term 1, Primary 5 were enjoying reading ‘Stig of the Dump’ as their class novel and were excited to create artwork linked to the story.
Cave Art was created after discussion with the pupils about the style of art Stig would have created.

Pupils made Wanted posters to help Barney and the policeman catch the two burglars. I read excerps from the novel to the pupils which described the burglars and the pupils included this in their posters. They were impressed that the Art teacher had been reading their novel and was knowledgeable about it!

Finally, pupils thoroughly enjoyed creating their own Stig model using a plastic bottle covered in papier mache.

These art sessions provided an opportunity for the pupils to discuss aspects of the novel.Their knowledge of the story and recollection of detail was impressive. For example, while adding the finishing touches, one boy suggested adding a watch to his Stig’s arm because in the story, Barney gives Stig a watch and he wears it on his arm.

This term the children throughout the school have been participating in a cross-curricular book study and I have based my art lessons to link with their books.
Initially this was quite a challenge, as I had to become familiar with all the books, all ten of them, then try to create art lessons around the book.
However, I enjoyed sharing the books with the pupils and I think they were surprised that the Art teacher knew so much about their book!
Now follows a short slide show of a small selection of the artwork. I will post pictures of the other year groups ASAP.

I am going to use this blog to display all the other great art work produced by the children of Carronshore Primary School. Most of the children’s artwork is displayed throughout the school. Their art work is regularly praised by visitors who come to our school. One of the aims of this blog is to give the children an even wider audience for their work. Eventually, I hope to give the children of the upper school their own online space to allow them to discuss their art work.

The two pictures below show the collage in closer detail. This piece was produced by P5 -7 pupils over a period of time, using recycled materials, including old tights for the children’s heads and plastic bags for trees.
