Remembrance Day Podcast (Season 3 Episode 3)

The students were asked to consider why it’s important to continue to honour those who fought for our freedom. They also discussed a collaborative art project (with a Remembrance Day theme) that we worked on with two other classrooms in Canada (click here and here to see who these classrooms are), and one student discusses her interpretation of the significance of the poppy. Season 3 (Episode 2)

In this episode the students were asked to reflect upon the learning opportunities that they have enjoyed during our first few weeks together. They have participated in field trips to Racing Against Drugs and You Dance, and they have created videos, podcasts, and comics using a variety of tools such as Animoto, Audacity, and Bitstrips. Their opinions are quite interesting and well thought-out. Length: 7 minutes 30 seconds.

Curriculum Night Commercial

This past Thursday was our annual Curriculum Night, where parents have the opportunity to meet with teachers and listen to presentations about the learning that will take place throughout the year. A few students in our class wrote a brief commercial script welcoming parents to Curriculum Night, and then recorded their scripts for our official “audio” welcome message. They only had a few minutes to complete the entire process, and here’s what they came up with.

This is the first episode created by a group of students new to MPRadio. This podcast was created in honour of a Canadian hero, Terry Fox. Light Up the World Part 1 (Season 2: Episode 14)

We have been creating digital stories as a kick-off to our Light Up the World initiative. Our class is attempting to raise money and awareness for third world countries that are not connected to the power grid, and this episode is the first installment of a series of digital stories and podcasts that will describe our efforts.

Season 2: Episode 13 (Spread the Word to End the Word)

spread-the-word-to-end-the-word5 As part of our Making a Difference program, we recorded this episode to pledge our support for the Spread the Word to End the Word campaign. This campaign is organized by the Special Olympics, and its goal is to raise awareness and ultimately put an end to the hurtful and unacceptable use of the “R” word (retard). With this podcast we are also supporting Laura Stockman’s blog carnival as she leads the way in attempting to raise awareness for this campaign. It is through Laura’s selflessness that we became inspired to become involved with Spread the Word to End the Word. A highlight for us was getting the entire school involved by holding an assembly and signing a banner to draw attention to this issue. As a matter of fact you can hear the collective voices of our entire school population at the end of the podcast (turn your volume down because this part is quite loud!). We hope that you enjoy!

Season 2: Episode 12 (Podcast and Digital Story)

The students were told that they would be starting a unit on Conservation of Energy, and they were encouraged to explore what they already knew about the topic. Two students, Greg and Mara, really impressed me with what they submitted before we even officially began instruction on the unit. They developed a podcast and a digital story to demonstrate their previous knowledge of the subject! This was one of those moments when something special happens in class and you have to acknowledge the creativity of the students. Imagine what the students will accomplish once they actually begin to explore this topic in detail. I can’t wait!
