“A separate study conducted by Nielsen has shown that smartphone usage is 12 percent higher in households with children than other households—which is possibility attributed to use by children. Maybe it’s time that parents come to terms with the reality that our phones and iPads moonlight as entertainment for our kids, and try to make the most of it. With the right apps and the proper restrictions, a little time with Mom’s and Dad’s gadgets may just do them some good.”

“QuickCursor sits in your menu bar and waits for you to activate it by clicking on its icon, which produces a drop down menu displaying a list of compatible text editors. By clicking on one of them, QuickCursor will automatically paste the currently active text in your frontmost window into that editor. When you finish writing and you leave that editor, your edited text will automatically be pasted back in the original program. Thus, if you’re writing an email in Mail.app, writing a blog post in Safari, or working on a document in Pages, you can seamlessly move to your favorite editor to do so and back again with little effort.”

“Gray says putting iPads in classrooms is a good idea, as long as they are properly utilized. He says educators used to be anxious to get their students in front of a computer, but once they were there, they didn’t always know what to do with them. Now that computers are more ubiquitous, “we can have more intelligent discussions about how they should be used,” he says. Gray says he hopes educators don’t fall into the trap of using the iPad as “free time for the teacher,” plopping the kids in front of yet another screen. And even a hardcore technologist such as Gray acknowledges that computers shouldn’t be used by teachers of every subject.”

“In Japan, millions of novels have been written on cell phones. My great-grandfather wrote his Ph.D. dissertation with a #2 pencil. Chaucer, Shakespeare and Jefferson wrote their brilliant works with bird feathers. Yet the iPad’s critics say creation is impossible using a device that would have been a Pentagon supercomputer 20 years ago. The computers that today’s writers say are absolutely necessary for writing didn’t even exist 10, 20 or 30 years ago. Is that when they think literacy started?”
