The intricacies of human learning have been a subject of scientific exploration for centuries. In our quest to empower the next generation, we must continually evolve our teaching methodologies. Today, I want to explore the fascinating intersection between Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) and Learning Preferences, and how this synergy can revolutionise the way we instruct young people.

First, a brief explanation of NLP: Neuro-Linguistic Programming is a psychological approach that examines the connection between neurological processes, language and behavioural patterns. It suggests that these elements can be ‘programmed’ to achieve specific goals in life, including enhanced learning and communication.

Now, let’s dive into how NLP and Learning Preferences can work together in education:

Rapport Building:
NLP techniques for building rapport can create a more engaging and trust-filled learning environment. This is crucial for young learners who may be hesitant or lack confidence.

Personalised Learning Pathways:
NLP teaches us that each individual processes information differently. By identifying a student’s preferred representational system, we can tailor our teaching methods to combine strategies to make learning experiences more engaging.

Reframing Negative Self-Talk:
Many students struggle with negative self-perceptions about their abilities. NLP offers powerful tools to help reframe these limiting beliefs, fostering a growth mindset.

Anchoring Positive States:
By associating positive emotional states with learning experiences, we can help students develop a lasting love for acquiring new knowledge.

Chunking Information:
NLP’s concept of ‘chunking’ aligns well with cognitive load theory in education. Breaking complex information into manageable ‘chunks’ that match a student’s learning preference can significantly enhance comprehension and retention.

Future Pacing:
Using NLP techniques to help students vividly imagine their future success can boost motivation and goal-setting behaviours.

By integrating NLP principles with an understanding of individual learning preferences, we can create more effective, engaging, and personalised learning experiences for our students.

Teenagers, with their boundless energy, curiosity and fresh perspectives, are uniquely positioned to be the change-makers of tomorrow. Cultivating an entrepreneurial mindset in them equips them with the skills to identify problems, create solutions and turn ideas into reality.

What does an entrepreneurial mindset look like?
An entrepreneurial mindset is characterised by creativity, problem-solving, risk-taking, resilience and a strong work ethic. It’s about seeing opportunities where others see challenges and having the courage to pursue them.

Who can benefit from developing an entrepreneurial mindset?
Everyone can benefit from an entrepreneurial mindset, not just those starting their businesses. It fosters critical thinking, communication and collaboration skills – essential for success in any field.

When is the best time to start developing an entrepreneurial mindset?
The earlier, the better! The teen years are a formative period when young minds are open to new ideas and experiences. However, it’s never too late to start cultivating this mindset.

Where can you find opportunities to develop entrepreneurial skills?
The possibilities are endless! From brainstorming ideas for a school project to developing a business plan, questioning can be applied to any situation. It can also be used to explore personal interests, passions and goals.

The Power of Questions in Fostering Entrepreneurship
The six classic inquiry questions – Why? What? Who? When? Where? How? – can be a valuable tool in developing an entrepreneurial mindset. Here’s how:

Why: Encourage teenagers to explore their passions, motivations and the problems they see in the world. This can spark ideas for potential solutions.

What: Help them brainstorm ideas, identify target markets and define their value proposition.

Who: Discuss potential customers, partners and mentors.

When: Explore timelines, milestones and the best time to launch a project.

Where: Consider potential markets, locations and resources.

How: Focus on planning, execution and overcoming challenges.

Connecting to the Australian Curriculum
The Australian Curriculum provides a solid foundation for developing entrepreneurial skills. By incorporating entrepreneurial activities into subjects like Mathematics, English, Humanities, Digital Technologies and Science, students can apply their knowledge in real-world contexts.

Mathematics: Data analysis, financial planning and problem-solving are essential for entrepreneurs.

English: Communication, persuasion and storytelling are crucial for pitching ideas and building relationships.

Humanities: Study historical entrepreneurs and trends, analyse societal issues and understand cultural differences.

Digital Technologies: Design, develop and evaluate digital products and services.

Science: Explore scientific inquiry, conduct experiments and identify potential business solutions.

By combining the power of questions with the structure of the Australian Curriculum, we can create a dynamic learning environment that empowers teenagers to become confident, creative, and entrepreneurial individuals.

Remember: The goal isn’t necessarily to create a new generation of entrepreneurs, but to equip young people with the skills and mindset to thrive in an ever-changing world.

Here’s a sneak peek into a recent project with a group of teenagers that aimed to achieve just that.

𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐩 1: 𝐒𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐞
We began by working with the teens, using an online multiple-choice questionnaire, to identify their natural ‘genius’, skills and capabilities. Each student received a personalised report that helped them to understand their ‘genius smarts’. We also introduced them to a learning framework to guide them through a process of learning so they could explore any real-world topic of their choice.

𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐩 2: 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐥-𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐒𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐬
Next, we provided an introductory lesson that incorporated real-world scenarios. This allowed students to see that other young people like themselves began to ‘think global and act local’ to start projects that changed the way we do things in the world. For example, Bye Bye Plastic Bags and The Ocean Cleanup. Allowing students to then brainstorm meaningful topics they were concerned about in our world provided the starting point for them to identify a problem that needed to be solved. To inspire them we explored the 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐩 3: 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐨𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬
We encouraged students to take the time to identify at least 8 key search terms to help them find more relevant information when searching online. We introduced them to several different search tools and databases, curation, note-making and synthesising strategies. This provided them with some structure and the flexibility to choose something they felt confident with to explore and capture the information they needed to solve the problem they identified. We also introduced different ways they could present their persuasive message to have an impact on their real-world audience.

𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐩 4: 𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭-𝐂𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐀𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡
At the heart of our project was a focus on student autonomy. Students were encouraged to explore, experiment and learn from their mistakes. This hands-on approach provided them with invaluable experiences.

𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐩 5: 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐮𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐀𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭
Finally, we monitored and assessed students’ digital literacy regularly, tracking their progression and growth over time. This helped us to tailor our teaching methods to the specific needs of each student.

This project underscored the value of incorporating real-world learning experiences in the classroom to improve digital literacy skills. Not only did it make learning more engaging for students, but it also led to a significant increase in their understanding and application of the skills.

After the project, we set up an online short course that would suit the more independent, self-motivated learner – Teen Quest.

While technology offers incredible educational opportunities, there’s something irreplaceable about real-world experiences. It’s crucial to balance screen time with real-world learning experiences.

Here’s why stepping outside the digital realm and into the physical world is crucial for teen development:

Learning by Doing: Textbooks and simulations can only go so far. Real-world experiences provide a hands-on approach that consolidates knowledge. Whether it’s building a robot in STEM class or volunteering at an animal shelter, teens develop practical skills and gain a deeper understanding of concepts.

Social and Emotional Growth: The digital world can feel isolating. Face-to-face interaction in real-world settings fosters communication, empathy and teamwork skills. From collaborating on a science project to participating in a sports team, teens learn to navigate social dynamics and build meaningful relationships. Face-to-face interactions in clubs, sports teams, or community projects teach teens communication, collaboration, and problem-solving. They learn to navigate social cues, build trust, and work effectively with others – skills that are vital for future success.

Problem-Solving Prowess: Real-world scenarios are messy and unpredictable – unlike the controlled environments of digital games or apps. Real-world experiences encourage creative problem-solving and critical thinking. Whether it’s navigating a new city, fixing a broken bike, or collaborating on a science project, teens learn to think outside the box and find solutions on their own.

Boosting Confidence: There’s a sense of accomplishment that comes from mastering a physical skill or overcoming a real-world challenge. Whether it’s conquering a fear of heights during a rock climbing session or delivering a presentation in class, these experiences build confidence and self-esteem in teens. Even developing a new skill in a pottery class, successfully leading a school debate, or overcoming stage fright during a play performance, real-world experiences provide opportunities for teens to build confidence in their abilities.

Connecting with the World: The digital world can create a distorted view of reality. Immersing themselves in real-world experiences allows teens to connect with their communities, understand diverse perspectives and appreciate the world around them. From volunteering at a local soup kitchen to travelling to a new country, they gain a broader worldview and develop a sense of social responsibility.

Preparing for the Future: The world is constantly changing and the skills needed for success are evolving too. Real-world learning equips teens with the adaptability, resilience and critical thinking skills they need to navigate an uncertain future. They will be better prepared for the unexpected challenges life throws their way.

So, how can you introduce real-world learning? Look for opportunities in your community – volunteer programs, after-school clubs, or even simply encouraging teens to explore their hobbies. Talk to teachers about incorporating project-based learning into the classroom. Remember, the most important thing is to spark curiosity and create a space for teens to experience the world beyond textbooks.

The benefits will last a lifetime.

Creating a strategic plan is a critical task to ensure the school library’s goals and objectives align with the school’s vision and mission. It just doesn’t make sense to have any separation especially when it is crucial to have the support of the school leadership and administration.

Let’s start with a general format for the presentation of the plan. The key thing is to make sure it is well-organised and visually appealing. So here are some suggestions to include:

Cover Page [Include the school’s name and logo, and, if you have this, the school library’s name and logo. Also, give your plan a title.]

Table of Contents [Usually, a plan is about 10 to 20 pages in length, so make sure you have a list of sections, and if necessary, subsections.]

Executive Summary [Don’t miss this out as the person reading the plan may be busy so you want to catch their attention by providing a concise summary of the key points.]

Introduction [Brief explanation of the purpose and significance of the plan.]

Main Sections [Present each component of the plan. (We’ll look at this in more detail below.)]

Graphics and Visuals [The placement of images throughout the report that are relevant to the plan and capture important data is powerful. Use charts, graphs and images to illustrate and support data and key points.]

Appendices [Include supporting documents such as surveys, student/staff feedback, data analysis or additional resources.]

References [This goes without stating! Cite sources and references as needed.]

Glossary [Sometimes we might use library jargon, so including definitions of specialised terms or acronyms is helpful.]

Contact Information [Provide contact details for the teacher librarian/school librarian for any inquiries.]

Let’s now explore some key components that should be included in the school library strategic plan.

Executive Summary
Provide a brief overview of the strategic plan. Make sure you highlight key objectives and goals.

Introduction
Explore the purpose of the strategic plan
Briefly describe the school’s vision and mission statements.

Situational Analysis
Assess the current state of the school library. Include data on library usage, collection quality, technology & staffing.
Analyse strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and challenges/threats.

Vision and Mission Alignment
Clearly state how the school library’s objectives align with the school’s visions and mission.

Strategic Goals and Objectives
Outline specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-focused (SMART) goals.
Include short-term and long-term objectives.
Address relevant areas of the school library, e.g. collection development, technology integration, user services, programs and staff development.

Action Plans
For each of the above, provide a detailed action plan. (Let the reader see you as a solution creator.)
Include responsibilities, timelines, resources and accountability.

Budget and Resource Allocation
Detail the financial requirements to successfully achieve the strategic plan.
Maybe explain how resources will be allocated in a cost-effective way to support each goal.

Stakeholder Engagement
Describe how you will involve various stakeholders, e.g. teachers, students, parents and the community, in achieving the school library goals.

Assessment and Evaluation
Present the methods and criteria for measuring the success of the plan.
You could include periodic evaluations and checkpoints to assess the progress.

Technology and Innovation
Address how the school library will stay up to date in its practices.
Include plans for the integration of digital resources and tools.

Professional Development
Outline professional learning opportunities for the school library staff to develop their skills, knowledge and expertise.

Marketing and Outreach
Present strategies for promoting the school library’s services, programs and resources.
Include how the school library will engage with the school community.

Risk Management
Identify potential risks and challenges and explain how these will be managed.

Timeline
Create a timeline that highlights key milestones and deadlines.

Where possible, engage with other school library staff and or relevant school leaders to get their input before finalising the plan.

Remember a strategic plan should be concise and to the point. Try and avoid verbosity. Here are some things to consider:

Clarity and conciseness: Use language that is easy to understand and get to the point. Avoid technical or jargon-laden terminology.

Key information: Include the most critical information that directly relates to the school library’s goals and how they align with the school’s strategic direction.

Visual elements: Incorporate a variety of visuals to present data, information and key points.

Executive Summary: Start the plan with a well-crafted executive summary that provides an overview of the plan’s key objectives and strategies. This should give the reader a good sense of what the plan entails.

Appendices: For detailed information, consider using appendices that can be referred to if necessary.

Engagement: Ensure the plan is engaging and captures the reader’s interest right from the beginning.

Alignment: Demonstrate how the school library’s strategic plan aligns with the vision, mission and goals of the school.

It is the key to ensuring that you are equipped to provide the best possible education for your students. By making professional learning a priority, you can make a positive impact on the lives of students and the future of education.

Here is what one of our members had to say about their membership investment.

“I am enjoying the process of attending webinars. I listen and look, then think about it and love the facility (as a member) to go back and revisit the session to clarify and remind me of the content. I am getting more out of the webinars than rushing to an evening workshop. I have time to reflect and plan one change, then actually execute it, rather than rush, travel, park, attend then race home…with very little reflection time.”

Thank you Glenys for these kind words and great to know you take action after each event.

One transformative approach to achieving this goal is purpose-based learning. This method aligns education with the unique developmental stages of children from infancy to early adulthood. In this blog post, we will delve into the significance of purpose-based learning and how it can be customised to suit the diverse needs of students aged 0 to 21.

Infancy to Early Childhood (0-6 years): Laying the Foundation

During this foundational period of development, children are forming their basic cognitive, social, and emotional skills. Purpose-based learning can be implemented by:
1. Sensory Exploration (0-2 years): Introduce activities that engage a child’s senses, like textured materials, music, and sensory play. This helps infants and toddlers begin to make sense of their world.
2. Imitative Play (3-6 years): Encourage imaginative and imitative play to foster early social skills and creativity. Activities like pretend play, dress-up, and storytelling align with this developmental stage.

Middle Childhood (7-11 years): Cultivating Interests and Values

As children enter the middle years, they are developing a sense of self and forming interests and values. Purpose-based learning can be tailored to:
1. Exploratory Projects: Provide opportunities for students to explore their interests through projects and research. This encourages them to develop a sense of purpose and a love for learning.
2. Community Involvement: Engage students in community service projects, instilling a sense of social responsibility and empathy for others.

Adolescence and Early Adulthood (12-21 years): Shaping Futures

In adolescence and early adulthood, students are preparing for the future. Purpose-based learning can be the key to guiding them:
1. Career Exploration: Assist students in identifying their passions and career goals. Internships, career-focused projects, and mentorship programs can help them gain a sense of purpose in their educational journey.
2. Service Learning: Encourage students to tackle real-world challenges through service learning projects. This not only fosters a sense of purpose but also equips them with critical life skills.
3. Global Engagement: Promote global awareness and engagement through projects that address international issues, fostering a sense of global citizenship and responsibility.

By aligning purpose-based learning with the stages of child development, educators can ignite a lifelong passion for learning and empower students to find their purpose in life. This tailored approach ensures that education is not a one-size-fits-all endeavour but a personalised journey that nurtures the individual strengths and interests of each child. As we embark on this educational journey with our students, remember that our ultimate goal is to equip them with the tools they need to find their purpose and make a meaningful impact on the world.

Early Childhood (0-6 years): Fostering Curiosity

Exploratory Projects (0-2 years): At this stage, infants are curious about the world around them. Simple projects like sensory play with different textures and materials can stimulate their senses and cognitive development.

Creative Art Projects (3-6 years): Preschoolers are naturally creative. Encourage them to express themselves through art projects like finger painting, collage making, and storytelling. These activities foster creativity and fine motor skills.

Middle Childhood (7-11 years): Building Skills and Knowledge

Science and Nature Projects: Children in this stage are eager to understand how the world works. Engage them in science experiments, nature studies, and hands-on projects that promote critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

History and Culture Projects: Explore history and different cultures through research projects and creative presentations. This helps students develop research and communication skills while fostering an appreciation for diversity.

Adolescence and Early Adulthood (12-21 years): Preparing for the Future

Career Exploration Projects: High school students can benefit from projects that align with their career interests. This could include internships, job shadowing, or creating portfolios that showcase their skills and achievements.

Social Impact Projects: Encourage students to tackle real-world issues through projects with a social impact. This not only teaches them about civic responsibility but also empowers them to make a difference in their communities.

Research and Innovation Projects: For older students, in-depth research projects and innovation challenges can prepare them for college and careers in fields like science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

Incorporating project-based learning into education allows students to take ownership of their learning journey, fostering curiosity, creativity, and problem-solving skills at each stage of development. By aligning projects with the specific needs and interests of students, educators can inspire a lifelong love of learning and prepare them for a bright future.

They embark on a journey of growth and development from the moment they are born, and it’s important for us to adapt our teaching methods to meet their evolving needs. One approach that has proven to be effective across the stages of development is play-based learning. In this post, we’ll explore the importance of aligning play-based learning with the different stages of child development, from infancy to early adulthood.

Infancy to Early Childhood (0-6 years): Building a Strong Foundation

During the early years of life play is the primary mode of learning. Infants and toddlers use play to explore their world, develop their motor skills, and begin to understand the concept of cause and effect. As educators, our role is to provide a safe and stimulating environment that encourages this natural inclination towards play.

Sensorimotor Play (0-2 years): Infants and toddlers engage in sensorimotor play, which involves activities that stimulate their senses and motor skills. Simple toys like rattles, soft blocks, and textured balls are perfect for this stage.

Symbolic Play (3-6 years): As children enter preschool years, they begin to engage in symbolic play, using their imagination to create scenarios and stories. Play kitchens, dress-up costumes, and building blocks support this stage of development.

Middle Childhood (7-11 years): Fostering Creativity and Problem-Solving

As children enter the middle years they become more independent thinkers and problem solvers. Play-based learning can be aligned with their skill developmental needs by encouraging:

Exploratory Play: Science experiments, art projects, and hands-on activities allow children to explore their interests and develop critical thinking skills.

Collaborative Play: Group projects, team sports, and cooperative games teach children important social skills, such as communication, teamwork, and conflict resolution.

Adolescence and Early Adulthood (12-21 years): Connecting Play with Purpose

As students transition into adolescence and early adulthood the focus shifts towards preparing them for the future. Play-based learning can still play a crucial role, but we probably won’t call it “playing” but being on purpose or being task-focused:

Project-Based Learning: Encourage students to work on projects that align with their interests and career aspirations. This helps them develop valuable skills and gain real-world experience.

Purposeful Play: Engage students in activities that have a real-world impact, such as community service or entrepreneurship projects. This allows them to see the connection between their learning and the world around them.

In conclusion, play-based learning is a versatile approach that can be tailored to suit the developmental needs of children from infancy to early adulthood. By aligning play with the specific stages of development, educators can create engaging and effective learning experiences that set students on a path to success.
