Jean-Michel Basquiat (December 22, 1960 – August 12, 1988) was an American artist and is cited by Graham Thompson as the first painter of African descent to become an international art star. He started as a graffiti writer in New York City, and in the 1980s produced Neo-expressionist painting. Basquiat died of a heroin overdose on August 12, 1988.

Basquiat was born in Brooklyn, New York to Matilde and Gerard Basquiat. His mother was Puerto Rican and his father is an accountant of Haitian origin. Because of his parents' nationalities, Basquiat was fluent in French, Spanish, and English before the age of eleven. He read in these languages, including Symbolist poetry, mythology, and history. At an early age, Basquiat displayed an aptitude for art and was encouraged by his mother to draw, paint, and to participate in other art-related activities. In late 1977, while a student at City-As-School high school in Brooklyn, Basquiat and his friend Al Diaz started spray-painting graffiti art on buildings in lower Manhattan, adding the signature of "SAMO". The graphics were messages such as "Plush safe he think.. SAMO" and "SAMO as an escape clause". In December 1978, the Village Voice published an article about the writings. The SAMO project ended with the epitaph "SAMO IS DEAD" written on the walls of SoHo buildings.

Basquiat dropped out of high school in September 1978, at the beginning of his senior year. He decided to leave his home and began living with friends, earning money by selling T-shirts and postcards on Manhattan's streets, and working in the Unique Clothing Warehouse on Broadway. By 1979, Basquiat had appeared on Glenn O'Brien's live public-access cable show TV Party. In the late 1970s, Basquiat formed a band called Gray with Vincent Gallo, Shannon Dawson, Michael Holman, Nick Taylor, Wayne Clifford. Gray performed at nightclubs such as Max's Kansas City, CBGB, Hurrahs, and the Mudd Club. Basquiat starred in an underground film Downtown 81 which featured some of Gray's recordings on its soundtrack He also appeared in Blondie's video "Rapture" as a club disc jockey.

In June 1980, Basquiat participated in The Times Square Show, a multi-artist exhibition, sponsored by Collaborative Projects Incorporated (Colab) and Fashion Moda. In 1981, Rene Ricard published "The Radiant Child" in Artforum magazine, which brought Basquiat to the attention of the wider art world.
In late 1981 he joined the Annina Nosei gallery in SoHo. By 1982, Basquiat was showing regularly, and alongside Julian Schnabel, David Salle, Francesco Clemente and Enzo Cucchi, became part of what was called the Neo-expressionist movement. He was represented in Los Angeles by the Larry Gagosian gallery, and in Europe by Bruno Bischofberger. He started dating then-aspiring performer Madonna in autumn 1982. That same year, Basquiat met Andy Warhol, with whom he collaborated in 1984-1986. He was also briefly involved with artist David Bowes. Basquiat worked on his paintings in Armani suits and often appeared in public in these same paint-splattered $1000 suits.

By the mid 1980s, he had left Annina Nosei gallery, and was showing in the famous Mary Boone gallery in SoHo. On February 10, 1985, Basquiat appeared on the cover of The New York Times Magazine in a feature entitled "New Art, New Money: The Marketing of an American Artist". He was a phenomenally successful artist in this period, but increasing drug use began to interfere with his personal relationships

The institutions of contemporary art

Contemporary art is exhibited by commercial contemporary art galleries, private collectors, corporations, publicly funded arts organizations, contemporary art museums or by artists themselves in artist-run spaces. Contemporary artists are supported by grants, awards and prizes as well as by direct sales of their work.

There are close relationships between publicly funded contemporary art organisations and the commercial sector. For instance, in Britain a handful of dealers represent the artists featured in leading publicly funded contemporary art museums.

Individual collectors can wield considerable influence. Charles Saatchi dominated the contemporary art market in Britain during the 1980s and the 1990s; the subtitle of the 1999 book Young British Artists: The Saatchi Decade uses of the name of the private collector to define an entire decade of contemporary art production.

Corporations have attempted to integrate themselves into the contemporary art world: exhibiting contemporary art within their premises, organising and sponsoring contemporary art awards and building up extensive collections of corporate art.

The institutions of art have been criticised for regulating what is designated as contemporary art. Outsider art, for instance, is literally contemporary art, in that it is produced in the present day. However, it is not considered so because the artists are self-taught and are assumed to be working outside of an art historical context. Craft activities, such as textile design, are also excluded from the realm of contemporary art, despite large audiences for exhibitions. Attention is drawn to the way that craft objects must subscribe to particular values in order to be admitted. "A ceramic object that is intended as a subversive comment on the nature of beauty is more likely to fit the definition of contemporary art than one that is simply beautiful."

At any one time a particular place or group of artists can have a strong influence on globally produced contemporary art; for instance New York artists in the 1980s.

Antonio Blanco was born on September 15, 1911, in Manila, the capital of the Philippines. Both of his parents were Spanish, a fact that Blanco believed linked him geographically and spiritually to Miro and Salvador Dali. His father settled in Manila during the Spanish - American War, where he attained prominence as a physician. Blanco was educated at the American Central School in Manila. During his high school years he loved the arts, literature and language classes but struggled in scientific subjects. It is no wonder that he spoke six languages - Spanish, French, English, Tagalog, Indonesian and a bit of Balinese. After completing high school in Manila, Blanco studied at the National Academy of Art in New York under Sidney Dickinson. During those early formative years, Blanco concentrated on the human form, fascinated by the female body more than any other subject matter. To further his studies and ignite his traveling spirit, he traveled extensively throughout the world before he finally landed in Bali in 1952.The King of Ubud gave Blanco a piece of land to set up his home and studio in Campuan, Ubud, at the confluence of two sacred rivers. Blanco and his Balinese wife, the celebrated dancer Ni Ronji, lived in their mountain retreat, barely leaving it for the world outside. Following a brief trip to the United States, where Blanco acquired many new collectors, the couple never left their fantasy home again.

Living in serene surroundings with his four children, Tjempaka, Mario, Orchid and Maha Devi, Bali became Blanco's center. He was fascinated by the island and completely captivated by its charm.

Blanco lived and worked in his magical hilltop home until his death in 1999, feverishly creating his fantasy portraits of beautiful women. Surrounded by lush gardens, rice fields and with a Banyan tree standing over his family's temple, Antonio Blanco proceeded to create a new reality for himself. His artistic outpourings of this isolated world became much sought after by eager art lovers, collectors and promoters. Within a few years, Blanco became the most famous foreign artist to make Bali his home. He was recognized in both Indonesia and abroad, receiving numerous awords and commanding huge prizes at international auctions.

By the end of his life, Blanco had begun building his museum at his studio in Campuan. Dramatically, he died just before its inauguration. His funeral was marked by a very important oremationin Ubud. It was Blanco's dream to turn his studio-mansion into a museum. His son, Mario, fulfilled this dream by following his path to become a painter. The Blanco Renaissance Museum is now open to the public, exposing both the maestro's and Mario's art works..

Kim here with a quick note as we've been noticing something on the blog since we moved off Blogger. Jo and I LOVE receiving comments and we read each and every one, and in doing so it's come to our attention that there seems to be some confusion as to where the link is to access a post's comment section. It's not located at the end of the post but next to the title of the post. I know I read blogs where the comments are located at either the top or the bottom so I often end up double-checking before I leave a comment in case I end up leaving one where it doesn't make sense. Sorry for the mix-up!

Since I can't leave this post without a photo, how about one i just took of a new tshirt ordered on Etsy that I found in my mailbox when I got home from work. It's from coup, and will be perfect with my 2 new pairs of Frye boots (oh yeah, and OH YEAH). (And check out the packaging!)

Biennale Jogja X-2009 telah berakhir dengan sukses dan meriah, setelah itu Yogyakarta kembali menggelar event yang pertama kali di adakan di Yogyakarta bahkan di Dunia yaitu Biennale anak.
Tujuan diadakan biennale anak ini guna kepentingan untuk memberikan pendidikan seni terhadap anak-anak. Sehingga Biennale Anak inilah wadah untuk menciptakan ruang baru untuk mengekspresikan dan menumbuhkan percaya diri. Sehingga nantinya kita akan menciptakan seniman-seniman kecil yang akan menggantikan kami kelak. Tapi pada proses-proses selanjutnya diharapkan akan mengalami perkembangan pengelolaan program melibatkan anak-anak sampai mereka sendiri nanti yang menjalankan Biennale Anak ini.
Biennale Anak yang mengusung tema “doKuMenkU” ini akan diikuti 283 anak berusia 4-18 tahun dengan menampilkan beragam karya seni berupa karya lukis, foto, video, komik, kolase, boneka dan grafiti. Selain itu, juga akan diselenggarakan seminar, workshop, pemutaran film serta melukis bersama anak-anak dan seniman kondang.
Dalam acara pemutaran film di pertontonkan karya-karya yang sangat berkelas (Garin Nugroho) . Sementara untuk acara melukis bersama anak-anak, akan dihadirkan perupa Djoko Pekik dan Nasirun yang akan melukis bersama anak-anak.
Sebuah konsep baru dan unik akan dijajal dalam Biennale Anak nanti. Konsep itu adalah Pasar DolDolan. Pasar DolDolanan adalah ruang bermain yang seru, menantang, dan bisa dinikmati anak-anak selama pameran berlangsung. Biennale Anak yang pertama ini dibuka secara resmi oleh GKR Hemas yang akan diawali dengan karnaval anak yang akan diikuti kurang lebih 100 anak-anak dengan memakai topeng.
Yang unik dari Biennale anak ini adalah Anak-anak yang masuk ke kota ini diwajibkan membawa mainan bekas untuk ditukar dengan mata uang mainan bernama Dolan. Dan ini tentu saja hanya berlaku di kota mini. Selain itu harga tiket untuk menyaksikan film dan memasuki arena bermain anak hanya menggunakan sekitar 10 uang dolan ( 10 Logam Uang Mainan) “Kursnya Rp1.000 setara dengan satu uang dolan dan panitia menyediakan counter khusus penukaran uang. Bagi pengunjung yang akan melakukan transaksi harus memakai uang dolan,”

Unlike the average graffiti artist, Jean-Michel Basquiat came to personify the art scene of the 80's, with its merging of youth culture, money, hype, excess, and self-destruction. And then there was the work, which the public image tended to overshadow: paintings and drawings that conjured up marginal urban black culture and black history, as well as the artist's own conflicted sense of identity. Basquiat's ploy was to write anti-materialism messages in plain view of some of the worst materialists around. This was not only a key to his rise to fame, but a stunning reflection of the tendency of the bourgeoisie to co-opt cultural opposition.

Basquiat attended Edward R. Murrow High School and City as a School in New York. In 1978, Basquiat dropped out of high school and left home, a year before graduating. He moved into the city and lived with friends, surviving by selling T-shirts and postcards on the street, and working in the Unique Clothing Warehouse on Broadway. By 1979, however, Basquiat had gained a certain celebrity status amidst the thriving art scene of Manhattan's East Village through his regular appearances on Glenn O'Brien's live public-access cable show, TV Party. In the late 1970s, Basquiat formed a band called Gray (the name being a reference to the book Gray's Anatomy), with Shannon Dawson, Michael Holman, Nick Taylor & Wayne Clifford. Gray played at clubs such as Max's Kansas City, CBGB, Hurrahs, and the Mudd Club. Basquiat worked in a film Downtown 81 (a.k.a New York Beat) which featured some of Gray's rare recordings on its soundtrack.^[4] He also appeared in Blondie's video "Rapture" as a replacement for DJ Grandmaster Flash when he was a no-show.

Basquiat first started to gain recognition as an artist in June 1980, when he participated in The Times Square Show, a multi-artist exhibition, sponsored by Collaborative Projects Incorporated (Colab) and Fashion Moda. In 1981, poet, art critic and cultural provocateur Rene Ricard published "The Radiant Child" in Artforum magazine^[5], helping to launch Basquiat's career to an international stage. During the next few years, he continued exhibiting his works around New York as well as internationally (alongside other street artists) now in the galleries such as Now Gallery, later promoted by Bruno Bischofberger and other gallery owners and dealers. He later showed at the galleries of Larry Gagosian and Mary Boone.

By 1982, Basquiat was showing regularly, and alongside Julian Schnabel, David Salle, Francesco Clemente and Enzo Cucchi, became part of what was called the Neo-expressionist movement. He started dating an aspiring and then-unknown performer named Madonna in the fall of 1982. That same year, Basquiat met Andy Warhol, with whom he collaborated extensively in 1984-1986, forging a close, if strained, friendship. He was also briefly involved with artist David Bowes. Since he had an enormous appetite for drugs, expensive clothing, fancy restaurants and first-class travel, this meant that he was tempted to work around the clock. Stoked by cocaine and marijuana, he'd often paint 18 hours in a row and then use heroin to get to sleep. When he awoke, he'd start off where he left off. As a modern-day equivalent of the Nibelungen, Basquiat labored away in the windowless basement of an upscale gallery run by an Italian woman named Annina Nosei who saw herself as an "ex-hippie". Basquiat worked on his paintings in Armani suits and often appeared in public in these same paint-splattered $1000 suits--a testament to his affinity for both mammon and bohemia.

in the Sand

Chef and Artist Jim Denevan creates freehand drawings in the sand, often with nothing more than a found stick and a rake. His monumental drawings are temporary, created in areas which will soon be reshaped by wind or water.

The video above shows Jim’s 2009 land drawing in Nevada, captured by filmmaker Peter Hinson. According to Hinson “What really strikes me is that you can't see anything from the ground. I had no idea what the piece looked like until we were aerial! Jim is good at what he does.”

Richard Winkler was born in 1969 on 26 June in Norrköping, Sweden. As a boy he was inspired by his grandfather, a painter, who later gave him his first lessons.

After high school, where he studied science, he moved to Stockholm. He attended the Nyckelviken School of Arts where he studied visual arts and continued to the Beckmans School of Design where he studied fine art and graphic design. His obsession with the human body made him frequently join the life model drawing classes instead of going to the commercial art classes.

From 1992 to 1997 he freelanced as an illustrator for magazines, advertising and television. He was known for his originality and given great freedom to work as he wished.

Richard WinklerIn spite of his successful life as an illustrator he was still searching for something else. During this time he was also painting on his own and held several solo ex- hibitions. He was dreaming of becoming a full time painter and made several inspiration trips to Sri Lanka and Paris during these years.

In 1997 he made up his mind and decided to become a full time painter. He moved to Bali where he married Regine, his Indonesian pen pal since secondary school. They lived in the mountain village of Ubud for nine years. After having two children they moved to Sanur, close by the beach, where they currently live.

Hyper Realist Sculptor

There is a point, when sculpturing, at witch taking great care of details leads to creating hyper realistic artwork that cannot be set apart from the real world objects it is supposed to represent. Ron Muech sculptures are just that, extraordinary realistic work that seems real even after looking at it for the tenth time.

About the artist:

Ron Mueck was born on 1958 is an Australian hyper realist sculptor working in Great Britain. Mueck’s early career was as a model maker and puppeteer for children’s television and films, notably the film Labyrinth for which he also contributed the voice of Ludo.

Mueck moved on to establish his own company in London, making photo-realistic props and animatronics for the advertising industry.

Although highly detailed, these props were usually designed to be photographed from one specific angle hiding the mess of construction seen from the other side. Mueck increasingly wanted to produce realistic sculptures which looked perfect from all angles.

In 1996 Mueck transitioned to fine art, collaborating with his mother-in-law, Paula Rego, to produce small figures as part of a tableau she was showing at the Hayward Gallery. Rego introduced him to Charles Saatchi who was immediately impressed and started to collect and commission work.

This led to the piece which made Mueck’s name, Dead Dad, being included in the Sensation show at the Royal Academy the following year. Dead Dad is a rather haunting silicone and mixed media sculpture of the corpse of Mueck’s father reduced to about two thirds of its natural scale. It is the only work of Mueck’s that uses his own hair for the finished product.

Mueck’s sculptures faithfully reproduce the minute detail of the human body, but play with scale to produce disconcertingly jarring visual images. His five metre high sculpture Boy 1999 was a feature in the Millennium Dome and later exhibited in the Venice Biennale.

In 2002 his sculpture Pregnant Woman was purchased by the National Gallery of Australia for $800,000.

Google

The clarity of thought is visible in the company’s logo right from the very beginning, when in 1996 two Stanford University computer science graduate students Larry Page and Sergey Brin built the search engine.

The name of the search engine is derived from Googol (meaning one followed by 100 zeros). Google’s first logo was created by Sergey Brin, after he taught himself to use the free graphic software GIMP. Later, an exclamation mark mimicking the Yahoo! logo was added. In 1999, Stanford’s Consultant Art Professor Ruth Kedar designed the Google logo that the company uses today.

Mozilla Firefox

An open source web browser, created by Dave Hyatt and Blake Ross, was first of all named as Phoenix, which is visible in their first logo in 2002. Due to some trademark issues, the name had to be changed to Firebird, but the name was chosen so that they would be able to retain the same logo.

Unfortunately, this name also had trademark issues because of existing software. Then, they finally got lucky and chose the name Firefox, which has become one of the favorite and most used browser worldwide. In 2003, the now famous logo was designed by professional interface designer John Hicks.

The logo depicted a Firefox engulfing the whole world, which also signifies the global reach that the company strived for. There has been a minor change in the logo since then, with the colors of the continents using a lighter blue color, just to differentiate them better from the oceans.

The 2009 edition of Wolda, the Worldwide Logo Design Annual, is now open for entries.

Wolda '09 is built on the same unique formula that guaranteed the success of last year's inaugural edition, with some new features:

The awards will be judged by a highly esteemed panel of 10 industry experts, and awarded based on quality of design.

The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts

Andy Warhol was born Andrew Warhola in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1928. In 1945 he entered the Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University) where he majored in pictorial design. Upon graduation, Warhol moved to New York where he found steady work as a commercial artist. He worked as an illustrator for several magazines, including Vogue, Harper's Bazaar and The New Yorker and did advertising and window displays for retail stores such as Bonwit Teller and I. Miller. Prophetically, his first assignment was for Glamour magazine for an article titled "Success is a Job in New York."

Throughout the 1950s, Warhol enjoyed a successful career as a commercial artist, winning several commendations from the Art Director's Club and the American Institute of Graphic Arts. In these early years, he shortened his name to "Warhol." In 1952, the artist had his first individual show at the Hugo Gallery, exhibiting Fifteen Drawings Based on the Writings of Truman Capote. His work was exhibited in several other venues during the 1950s, including his first group show at The Museum of Modern Art in 1956.

The 1960s was an extremely prolific decade for Warhol. Appropriating images from popular culture, Warhol created many paintings that remain icons of 20th-century art, such as the Campbell's Soup Cans, Disasters and Marilyns. In addition to painting, Warhol made several 16mm films which have become underground classics such as Chelsea Girls, Empire and Blow Job. In 1968, Valerie Solanis, founder and sole member of SCUM (Society for Cutting Up Men) walked into Warhol's studio, known as the Factory, and shot the artist. The attack was nearly fatal.

At the start of the 1970s, Warhol began publishing Interview magazine and renewed his focus on painting. Works created in this decade include Maos, Skulls, Hammer and Sickles, Torsos and Shadows and many commissioned portraits. Warhol also published The Philosophy of Andy Warhol (from A to B and Back Again). Firmly established as a major 20th-century artist and international celebrity, Warhol exhibited his work extensively in museums and galleries around the world.

The artist began the 1980s with the publication of POPism: The Warhol '60s and with exhibitions of Portraits of Jews of the Twentieth Century and the Retrospectives and Reversal series. He also created two cable television shows, "Andy Warhol's TV" in 1982 and "Andy Warhol's Fifteen Minutes" for MTV in 1986. His paintings from the 1980s include The Last Suppers, Rorschachs and, in a return to his first great theme of Pop, a series called Ads. Warhol also engaged in a series of collaborations with younger artists, including Jean-Michel Basquiat, Francesco Clemente and Keith Haring.

Following routine gall bladder surgery, Andy Warhol died February 22, 1987. After his burial in Pittsburgh, his friends and associates organized a memorial mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York that was attended by more than 2,000 people. He remains one of the most influential artists of the 20th century.

In the next few posts, we'll look at some book covers and learn a few things about design. We'll find that design sometimes has to follow form. And in these examples, they follow the form of the content.

The creative processes used to design a book cover are relatively the same for designing a logo, a letterhead, or illustration. The final product may differ, but the progression is similar.

They say you can't judge a book by its cover, but in this case, we can at least make a judgment call upon the book art on the cover.

The cover art draws you in with its use of silhouette design and this definitely is eye catching. The graphic designer has taken the liberty to use dark and light contrasts to emphasize the feeling of what the book is about -- and it works well.

CITA-CITA kemerdekaan yang melandasi kehidupan Negara Kesatuan Republik Indonesia (NKRI) seperti ditegaskan dalam Undang-Undang Dasar 1945, adalah merdeka dari kemiskinan, dan kebodohan, sehingga bisa menjadi bangsa yang mandiri dalam kehidupan sosial, ekonomi, politik, hukum, budaya. Dan dengan kemerdekaan yang dimiliki tersebut, dapat menjadi alat dan medan perjuangan bagi terselenggaranya kehidupan bangsa yang cerdas, adil, makmur, sejahtera. Namun ironisnya, di Indonesia, ternyata dalam masalah pendidikan belumlah mendapatkan kemerdekaan.

Lantas adakah konsep pendidikan yang berbasis kerakyatan, dan realitas?
Diskursus mengenai konsep pendidikan terus menjadi kajian yang menarik untuk diperbincangkan. Telaah dari berbagai konsep pendidikan tersebut tentunya tidak bisa lepas dari landasan berpikir beserta argumentasinya. Seperti konsep pendidikan yang ditawarkan oleh Raden Mas Suwardi Suryaningrat, sekarang dikenal dengan Ki Hajar Dewantara, yang tanggal kelahirannya diperingati sebagai hari pendidikan nasional. Konsep pendidikan yang diusung oleh Ki Hajar Dewantara adalah pendidikan yang berciri khas kebangsaan. Maksud dari konsep tersebut adalah, menanamkan nilai-nilai kebangsaan dalam praktik pendidikan nasional. Tujuannya agar setiap penduduk memiliki semangat kebangsaan untuk membela Negara dengan jiwa patriotisme yang tinggi untuk mencapai kemerdekaan
Konsep pendidikan yang ditawarkan oleh GeTaRt juga berasaskan pada kodrat alam, dan kemerkaan. Dijelaskan bahwa manusia adalah mahluk Tuhan yang mempunyai kekuatan kodrati untuk berkembang. Serta meyakini bahwa manusia dapat tumbuh serta memelihara dan mengembangkan hidupnya sendiri dengan memanfaatkan kreatifitas yang dipunyai.
Semangat pendidikan kerakyatan yang GeTaRt, ternyata bisa menjawab tantangan kerakyatan pada saat ini. Dengan bekal kerakyatan, mendekatkan pada realitas yang terjadi serta mengembangkan kepribadian atau potensi diri yang dimiliki, maka output dari pendikan tersebut bisa hidup bersama rakyat untuk mengagkat rakyat jelata. Sehingga generasi-generasi muda pada saat itu, memiliki jiwa pembebasan dari belenggu imperialisme penjajah.
Sekarang kita telah merdeka, merdeka dari penjajahan secara fisik. Namun secara pendidikan, kita belum merdeka. Keadaan Indonesia pun semakin silang sengkurat.
Dalam keadaan carut-marut seperti sekarang, sudah saatnya kita berpikir tentang membangun kembali pendidikan sebagai bagian dari gerakan rakyat. Sudah saatnya pula pemerintah berbesar hati mengakui keterbatasannya, dan menjadi lembaga pemberi fasilitas dan pengakuan kepada usaha-usaha rakyat membangun pendidikannya sendiri. Pengalaman sejarah Indonesia sendiri memperlihatkan bahwa pendidikan yang didasarkan pada kerakyatan, malah bisa membangun negeri ini.

I. Latar Belakang

Menjadi sebuah kewajiban bagi segenap civitas akademika yang bergelut di dalam ranah seni untuk selalu memberikan informasi yang bernilai estetis dan berdaya guna ataupun bernilai lebih bagi para apresian dan penggiat dunia seni. Dengan adanya kewajiban tersebut maka tujuan berkesenian yang menjadi dasar kemunculan dari civitas akademika tersebut tidak hanya sekedar sebagai packaging yang hanya bisa dinikmati oleh kalangan tertentu, namun juga seyogyanya sanggup menumbuhkan embrio akan wawasan dan wacana berkesenian baru bagi seluruh lapisan masyarakat. Terlebih lagi jika kewajiban tersebut merupakan agenda berkesinambungan yang tanpa henti sebagai wujud dari kontribusi positif yang membangun secara menyeluruh dari segenap civitas akademika dunia seni kepada segenap lapisan masyarakat.
Disain Komunikasi Visual Institut Seni Indonesia Yogyakarta (DKV ISI Yogya) sebagai salah satu bagian dari fenomena kehidupan berkesenian seperti tersebut di atas dalam perjalanannya selalu berusaha memberikan wacana dan wawasan baru bagi segenap elemen masyarakat. Bahasa ungkap yang dihadirkannya memberikan semacam dimensi pemahaman baru bagi perkembangan dunia estetika terapan yang bersinggungan dengan dunia riil di sekitar kita. Sehingga sudah menjadi semacam tanggung jawab bagi DKV ISI Yogyakarta untuk selalu menghadirkan diri di tengah masyarakat dalam bentuk pameran ataupun event lainnya.
Merujuk pada hal tersebut di atas maka Disain Komunikasi Visual Institut Seni Indonesia Yogyakarta menyelenggarakan pameran dengan tajuk ’Diskomplet’. Pameran ini disamping sebagai agenda rutin dari prodi Disain Komunikasi Visual ISI Yogyakarta, juga sebagai wahana berkreasi segenap elemen dosen dan mahasiswa DKV ISI sekaligus sebagai sumbangsih yang tiada henti kepada segenap apresian seni dan penggiat dunia seni khususnya seni disain. Diharapkan dengan pameran ini semakin menumbuhkan-mengembangkan iklim berkesenian agar semakin dinamis dan melahirkan embrio-embrio baru nan segar dalam ranah ilmu disain komunikasi visual.
Tajuk ‘Diskomplet’ terwujud dari kata Disain Komunikasi Visual dan Komplet (Bahasa Jawa). Artinya bahwa dalam pameran ini menampilkan ke-komplit-an yang dimiliki oleh prodi Disain Komunikasi Visual Institut Seni Indonesia Yogyakarta. Ke-komplit-an ini termanifestasi dalam idiom visual jamu tradisonal yang nota bene mampu membikin sehat/menyehatkan, orisinil dalam konten dan konteks, berolah rasa dalam proses pembuatan, parennialis-ekletik-progresif dan sekaligus bernuansa lokal. Hal itulah sebetulnya menjadi salah satu kunci anomali yang berbeda dari DKV ISI Yogyakarta.

Various methods are used to create and combine symbols, images and/or words to create a visual representation of ideas and messages. A graphic designer may use typography, visual arts and page layout techniques to produce the final result. Graphic design often refers to both the process (designing) by which the communication is created and the products (designs) which are generated.

Common uses of graphic design include magazines, advertisements and product packaging. For example, a product package might include a logo or other artwork, organized text and pure design elements such as shapes and color which unify the piece. Composition is one of the most important features of graphic design especially when using pre-existing materials or diverse elements.

Hundley's theatrical posters are not only impassioned, they are smart, too.

He has created posters for theatrical productions around the country. These projects give Hundley creative freedom which he uses to maximum advantage, developing his own themes and putting his human imprint on his subject. His illustrations also appear in publications such as the New Yorker and Rolling Stone, and accompany his own stories in Virginia Living magazine.
