Site

A major alteration of an existing house on a sloping site with a panoramic eastern view of Seward Park, Lake Washington, and Mount Baker. Contrasting the views to the east, the western portion of the site offers more introspective opportunities.

Program

The owners are avid gardeners and wanted the house to be integrated with the landscape while taking advantage of the sweeping view of Lake Washington. The master suite had to share a level (as well as the lake view) with the main living spaces, yet remain private and separate. A flexible use guest suite – a space they could utilize daily or close off for long term guests – was also desired.

Solution

The living room fireplace – a freestanding “monolith” – serves as the anchor and pivot point for the house. It marks the entrance to the main living space, forms a baffle to the sitting room and master suite, and is the low point from which the butterfly roof opens up. At the high end of the roof, a generous deck extends the interior space to the outside. As a counterpoint to this airiness, the guest suite is more intimate and darkly hued opening out to a private courtyard and water feature. Large trees were transplanted from the owners’ previous home, creating the sense of a mature garden.

For those of you haven’t heard about Gray Magazine, a new publication featuring “Pacific Northwest Design”, we recommend checking it out (and subscribing – we do). Our Lopez Island Cabin is featured in the February/March 2012 issue (on newsstands as I write this), and we’re really happy with the quality of the article and photos. The photographer, Alex Hayden, was a real sport dealing with a frustrating day of rain and scattered sunbreaks. Whenever he set up for an inside shot, the sun came out, and when he moved outside it started to rain. It would have been funny – well, it was funny. Nonetheless, Alex managed to capture the essence of the project, the quality of the space, the site, the water, and the rock.

These guys must really like us. Images Publishing Group has included us in yet another of their books on architecture and design. This time, our Parks Residence – a condominium remodel in Seattle – is in “21st Century Architecture: Apartment Living” by Beth Browne.

As always, a successful project depends on a successful team, and in this case we had a great time collaborating with:

They gave us clear input as to their desired outcome, and were always prompt and decisive when issues arose during the process. These qualities were as important to the success of the project as any of the skills of the design and fabrication team.

It’s been a while since we posted our original design proposal and an update on our design process for the Enatai Remodel in Bellevue. The project has since gone through the phases of design development, construction documents, permits, bidding & negotiation, and is just about through construction (by DLH Inc.). As always, we are looking forward to a lengthy and happy “owner occupancy” phase.

Gotta love the AIA Seattle/Daily Journal of Commerce Project of the Month jury’s comment on our design for the Brooks Dental Studio in Tacoma. I doubt that sentence has ever been uttered before, especially as a description of a dental office. Well, thanks to Dr. Jamie Brooks, we were given the opportunity to design a dental office with a unique look and interesting off-hour activities. Jamie features local artists’ work throughout the office, has commissioned a graffitti artist to liven up the staff area, and has artist open-house receptions on a regular basis. Jamie really knows how to throw a party – they’re definitely the most fun you’ll ever have at the dentist!

It’s been a while since we posted some construction photos of our Boat Bay House. There’s been a lot of progress as the project is nearing completion. In addition to noticing the changes in the house, you might want to pay attention to the changes in the landscaping. The owners transplanted a number of large trees to the site, so the gardens are looking instantly great. None of this sitting around and waiting for trees to grow…
