Today, I’d like to publish a short interview with new-wave glam metal band – Nasty Habit that was made about 2 weeks ago.

Nasty Habit

Prologue

Nasty Habit - Nasty Habit (2012)

In the beginning I’d like to introduce ‘Nasty Habit’ band for one more time. Shortly, band was founded in 2008 and actually the members of the band are: Tommy Ende (lead vocals), Kenny Ende (lead guitar), David Jordan (drums) and Frank Wheeler (bass). I encourage you to visit their site.

For now, they released a few months ago debut eponymous album (2012) with one video ‘Saturday Night‘.

Interview

Q: What exactly was the reason that you wanted to start firstly with Grime, then Nasty Habit and play glam metal/sleaze rock?

Nasty Habit: Well Rock N’ Roll has always had an influence on our lives. The aggressive sound and good time attitude have always been appealing. Its pretty obvious after doing some research that the 80’s and early 90’s was “The Golden Age” of true Rock N’ Roll, so its no surprise that we’re influenced by the “Glam/Sleaze” Era as its come to be referred as.

Q: I’ve noticed that each one of you has different bands that likes and is influenced by them. Well, are you going to create something completely new (I mean whole image and musical style) or rather based largely or only partially on particular 80s band or bands?

NH: Despite our influences playing a role in our sound, we will always sound like “Nasty Habit” and no one else. We take bits and pieces from all different genres and bands, chew it up and spit it out with our own “Nasty” spin on it.

Q: It’s quite difficult to find your band using ‘Nasty Habit’ phrase in Google, there are few another bands using this same name and they may take your traffic and in consequence a lot of people may hit the wrong address. Anyway, your video ‘Saturday Night’ is listed #1 on YouTube. Why have you renamed band from ‘GRIME’ to ‘Nasty Habit’?

NH: Yeah we’ve noticed there are a few cover bands out there using similar names. I think our website is like the 3rd link down. However, they’re just cover bands not to be taken seriously. I mean, they don’t even write music, so no worries. But it would be nice to get some “google” recognition.
As for the video, yes, its pretty easy to find on youtube.com and it’s been doing wonders for our fan base internationally.
As for the name change, we’ve come a long way since then and it just seemed time to move on from our inexperienced past.

Q: Are you going to record next videos for your debut and/or next albums? The first one was really great!

NH: Thanks, glad you liked it! Yes, thats the plan. As I said, the video is an excellent way for us to build our fan base and spotlight certain songs. Its also just a lot of fun. So yes, expect more in the near future.

Q: As you know it’s really getting hotter about glam metal and I’d also like to ask you about its future. How do you foresee – will the good times be back? Would you like to play for people who were teenagers in glam metal and loved glam metal or rather encourage young who merely heard about this genre?

NH: Absolutely, Its very cool to see the movement make a comeback. We really have no target audience aside from Rock n’ Rollers. But we definitely would like to help stray the youth away from the Hardcore or Hip Hop garbage thats going around today, and get them back into the good time vibes that are present in Rock N’ Roll.

Q: To complete previous question – how do you see your close future? Is anything that you really, really want to achieve as a band?

NH: We’ve been shopping around for record deals lately, we’ve gotten offers, but none that really got us excited. So that would be a step in the right direction. Along with company support would come tours, album #2 and more videos and more fans. Basically we wanna do everything we’re doing now x 10

Q: And the final question, not related with main topic, but as a Polish I’d like to ask Have you ever heard about Poland and what do you associate this country with?

NH: Hahaha, well, I’ve heard of Polish Sausage if that counts for anything! Q: Are you going to record next videos for your debut and/or next albums? The first one was really great!strong

When?

‘Heaven Sent’ was recorded and released in 1987 on ‘Back For Attack‘ album with ‘Dream Warriors‘ and another singles. It’s worth to add that this album peaked highest on Billboard 200 (#13) 1.

I was recently searching for any new bands who plays glam metal and now in a few parts I’d like to present the results and feature the most promising revival glam bands,

Prologue

The order of the song is coincidental, maybe you’ve heard them before – but it seems that’s the first post who summaries and features glam metal bands that writes and creates completely new songs, so there won’t be any covers here. Let’s bring the glam back!

#1 Nasty Habit

What’s the best thing in Saturday Night and this song? Well, I love the way how they mixed and gathered all best things from eighties music. Actually they recorded only one video and one eponymous studio album.

Nasty Habit – Saturday Night

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PWw-u0vPMig

#2 The Last Vegas

Now, a piece of decadence. They’re mostly influenced by Mötley Crüe, but it’s barely visible it in their music, so rather sleaze than glam. The Last Vegas become gradually more and more popular and with the last studio album ‘Whatever Gets You Off‘ (2009) produced by Nikki Six (Mötley Crüe basist) that was rated very positively, they have big chances.

The Last Vegas – The Other Side

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GPX-4mf-vO4

The Last Vegas – Apologize

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TdIMwhFhyIg

#3 Jettblack

And now something different, maybe it sounds quite poppy – but it really smashes, take a look at lyrics and lots of chicks in video Video is perfect and even my friends who don’t like glam metal as a whole loved this song,
By the way, in the next month Jettblack is going to put out the next album that’s named ‘Raining Rock‘.

Jettblack – Two Hot Girls

#4 Bad City

The next band, that makes a lot of noise. In 2010, they released their first, debut and only album named ‘Welcome To Wasteland‘ and it peaked #182 on Billboard 200 1. By the way, it seems that lead vocalist has polish origins because of his last name – ‘Cyganowski’.

Bad City – Take Me For A Ride

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rEYhapqsb3I

#5 Wildstreet

Probably the sleaziest band here, They’re videos are masterpieces and I can’t imagine that something might be more suitable for Eric Jayk’s voice. They really got extra-ordinary music and visual style, wow! The ‘density’ of hot chicks inside the video for ‘Easy Does It’ is impressive!

Wildstreet – Easy Does It

#6 HART

And now the freshest band from Norway – they didn’t have enough time to make more publicity, but I wish them a lot of successes, I recommend to visit their official site, that was recently launched.

HART – Rock Me

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O-PjuFBMnFE

#7 Reckless Love

It seems that the band is better known in Europe (Reckless Love was also founded in Finland). It’s rather pop/glam than metal, but there’s no doubt that they bring a lot of attention to the whole genre as a spectacular and untypical band,

Reckless Love – Hot

#8 Steel Panther

To finish the first part, according to charts Steel Panther is the most popular band among the others band in this post, maybe because they recorded 3 studio albums and band was founded in 2003. IMHO, they’re very close to restore the original climate from 80s, although in fact they parody glam metal . The band is widely recognized by lot of glam metal music lovers,

BTW, ‘Death To All But Metal‘ video is very similar to ‘Girlschool‘ by Britny Fox and ‘I Wanna Rock‘ by Twisted Sister.

When?

‘Love Of A Lifetime’ was released by Firehouse on eponymous album in 1990 – the last year when a glam metal band with debut album could achieve success. Happily, they’re lucky and this luck extended also to the next album.

Firehouse - Firehouse (1990)

Popularity

First of all, look at how many times video was played on Youtube – almost 3 millions for now (3rd May, 2012). What’s more it’s the only song by Firehouse that peaked on Billboard Hot 100 and with very high position (#5) 1.

I still wonder, why have missed this song – of course ‘The Final Countdown’ is known by huge amount of people, but most of them doesn’t know that this song represents and was/is sung by Swedish glam metal band – Europe.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9jK-NcRmVcw

When?

Maybe some of you remember when. Anyway, this song was released in golden year of glam metal – 1986, when another great songs such as ‘Livin’ On A Prayer‘ by Bon Jovi appeared. Happily, Europe put out the album in the perfect moment – but it wasn’t enough. I think that the popularity of this song comes from fact, that the music and visual style brought something new and very attention-catching – they mixed up hard rock (vocals), glam metal with influences of classic heavy metal (guitar solos) and whole 80s pop(ular) music (keyboards, in fact Europe is pioneer when it comes to using keyboards in glam metal) – the result is ass-kicking!

And to be shortly, ‘The Final Countdown’ song comes from album named surprisingly exactly as the song.

Europe - The Final Countdown - 1986

Who?

Joey Tempest – vocals

John Norum – guitar

John Levén – bass

Mic Michaeli – keyboards

Ian Haugland – drums

‘The Final Countdown’ Popularity

Ask anybody who listened to MTV or radio in 80s, maybe he hasn’t heard about glam metal, but it’s almost impossible that he hasn’t heard about ‘The Final Countdown‘ and/or Europe band. As regards charts, ‘The Final Countdown’; is the second most popular song after ballad ‘Carrie‘ 1 . It’s wort to highlight that, it’s a rarity, when 4 songs from one album are on the charts (in addition peaks very highly), despite the post-title song and ‘Carrie‘, next songs are ‘Cherokee‘ and ‘Rock The Night‘.

A long, long time ago I mentioned here Britny Fox and I think that it’s time to make it again and present another glammy song from one of the best glam metal bands.

When?

‘Long Way To Love‘ is the next song after ‘Girlschool‘ comes from debut, eponymous album released in 1988

‘Long Way To Love’ popularity

To begin with, it’s the only single by Britny Fox which peaked on Billboard Hot 1001 (de facto only #100 position, barely but anyway it was a huge success). Album as a whole received a bigger attention – #39 on Billboard 2002

When?

Just like the previous Slaughter’s song described here ‘Mad About You‘, it comes from ‘Stick It To Ya’ released in 1990 with quite big success.

Slaughter - Stick It to Ya (1990)

Who?

Mark Slaughter — lead vocals & keyboards and guitar

Tim Kelly — guitar

Dana Strum — bass

Blas Elias — drums

‘Spend My Life’ popularity

Personally, this is my favourite song by Slaugher, but unhappily it wasn’t charted but album peaked quite highly (#18 on Billboard 200)1

Hey, I decided to refresh a ’3/5 Greatest … Ballads’...

Hey, I decided to refresh a ’3/5 Greatest … Ballads’ series that was begun with Def Leppard songs almost 1,5 year ago.

Prologue

‘White Lion’ appeared here for a few times, but I think that it’s not enough, because this is one of best glam metal bands that ballads are really emotive. They’re are really in the first league and thanks to their style ‘White Lion’ should be placed next to Poison, Warrant and Cinderella. It’s really surprising to me, that they’re hated by a lot of people who call themselves ‘real metals’,'rockers’ whatever.

It was hard to select only 5, but I hope that my choice was proper.

Let me set you on fire,

#1 White Lion – When The Children Cry

Hmm, this is the most successful song, comes from ‘Pride’ album released in 1987. In my humble opinion it’s a bit depressing.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MHZ79InLGRY

#2 White Lion – Wait

It’s the next and last song who peaked Top 10 on charts, the first was of course ‘When The Children Cry’. I like it, because it’s powerful and brings a lot of positive energy.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LrPJgnOXjy8

#3 White Lion – Tell Me

It’s also song with positive undertone – well there is nothing more that I can say – you have to check it on your own.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=atwUCIuNWjc

#4 White Lion – Broken Heart

For sure, the saddest song among others in this post. There are 2 versions of this song: first, earlier comes from ‘Fight To Survive (1985)’ album and second one from ‘Mane Attraction (1991)’.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l3TqhfwO3CA

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gz3sN5cguJc

#5 White Lion – Love Don’t Come Easy

This track sounds sligthly different from other songs, but in my opinion it measures its value, because this song is really unique.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Bdgns1KakY
