The USGS SRV team responded quickly to produce detailed maps from geospatial information to assist in recovery efforts. Over 100 field maps were produced, which enabled the NPS to find the missing man and rescue him on May 25.

The USGS SRV team consisted of team leader Stephen Hartley along with geographers Gene Nelson and Bill Jones.

"Accurate maps are essential in search and rescue efforts," said Leslie Velarde, NPS Information Officer. "In this case it proved to be an invaluable asset for the success of the operation."

"The USGS was relieved at the positive outcome and proud that our SRV team contributed to the rescue," said Marcia McNutt, USGS Director. "In many instances during the past year we have been called upon to contribute geospatial data and expertise to analyze it in times of crisis."

The SRV was first used during Hurricanes Katrina and Rita to map 911 rescue calls and critical infrastructure, such as levee breaks, bridges and pumping stations; and for performing water-quality sampling at sites along Lake Pontchartrain. The vehicle has been deployed multiple times since then, most recently during the Deep Water Horizon Oil Spill.

"It's incredible how much geospatial technology is now being used in search and rescue missions," said USGS SRV team member, Bill Jones. "The acceptance of the technology has greatly increased since Hurricane Katrina."

The SRV is ready to be deployed at any time, especially during hurricane season when it may get called into service repeatedly for Federal, State or local response efforts. The SRV is equipped with computers, software, and plotters to provide spatial analyses during and after natural or man-made disasters.

To learn more about the USGS Science Response Vehicle visit the USGS National Wetlands Research Center website.

Source: U.S. Geological Survey

Fuente: El Tiempo

Data for Decision, 42 Years Later

The “classic” (at least if you’re a GIS geek) 1967 short feature “Data for Decision” produced by the National Film Board of Canada describes the development of the Canada Geographic Information System (CGIS). Dr. Roger Tomlinson, then director of CGIS, commissioned the film as a way to communicate information about the project to the government, who was funding CGIS development.

The film has been posted to YouTube, in three parts.
Source: GIS and Science

three-dimensional map of the world using satellites

The German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) and the space company Astrium have recently taken an important step forward in their mission to create a three-dimensional map of the world. On 14 October 2010, the radar satellite TanDEM-X moved into close formation with its 'twin', TerraSAR-X. Before this, the two satellites were orbiting 20 kilometres apart - a flight time of almost three seconds. Now, there are only 350 metres separating the pair, which means their antennas are able to acquire radar images of the same area simultaneously. The objective of the mission is to create a high-precision, three-dimensional digital elevation model of Earth's land surface. The project needs the satellites to operate in parallel for a period of three years. The transition to close formation flight marks the beginning of the final preparatory stage of the TanDEM-X mission. The routine operations phase is due to start in early January next year.

further info: TerraSAR-X and TanDEM-X flying in close formation

ArcGIS Explorer Online

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 223px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_yaOaZdWSiwA/S_qNAUN2adI/AAAAAAAAAIY/GQeSUbsA5As/s320/AGExplorerOnline_Pucallpa.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5474843333588576722" />

2010 Mashup Challenge winners announced

California, US: ESRI announced the result of Mashup Challenge 2010. Dave Bouwman, CTO and lead software architect at DTSAgile of Fort Collins, Colorado, won the top prize of USD 10,000 with Executive Compensation Mashup, which compares top US executive salaries with the total income for selected counties in the United States.

The geodeveloper community's strong response to the ESRI 2010 Mashup Challenge created a quandary for the jury. "I was really impressed with the creativity and quality of all the applications that were submitted. It was difficult for us to choose the top four entries. This is a testimony to the immense possibilities afforded by the new ESRI Web APIs and the freely available ArcGIS Online content, said says Michael Gould, ESRI's director of education for industry solutions.

The guidelines for the challenge were to build a mashup using ESRI's ArcGIS Online content and Web APIs, publish the related URL and post a video describing the application on YouTube.

Daniel Bradshaw, owner of DB MediaStudio, Springville, Utah, won second prize and USD 5,000 with Fluttr: The Human Story in Realtime, a mashup that automatically populates an international map with live feeds from Twitter, Flickr and YouTube.

Mark Laudon, of LaudonTech in Surrey, Canada, took the third prize and USD 2,500 for Floor Plan Mapping, an interactive building floor plan with employee search capabilities including a brief employee biography.

Ernesto Giron, GIS senior analyst for the International Centre for Tropical Agriculture in Cali, Colombia, won fourth prize and USD 2,500 for Drought Timing for Agronomic Screening. This interactive international soil map indicates soil type and quality in a specified area and its agricultural potential with respect to changes in climate.

Source : http://www.esri.com/
