This week I’ve tried cutting back on my feed reading and relying more on Twitter – particularly Twitter lists, for tracking great design links. I have my own list of creatives, but also closely follow two other great lists: the Smashing Network list and Roger Byrne’s list (which includes yours truly).
When I see a Holstein cow (the black and white kind), I think of chicken! That’s because of the ingenious branding and marketing efforts of Chick-fil-A. They’ve created a truly remarkable product, but the product is only the beginning of the story. Chick-fil-A has created a remarkable experience!

With the recent launch of their newest product, the spicy chicken sandwich, Chick-fil-A rolled out the red carpet for their loyal fans and followers. They don’t just sell chicken sandwiches to customers, they serve them “with pleasure” to what is rapidly becoming a brand-based family.

I sampled the spicy chicken sandwich way back in February. They were selling them in southern California as a test market and I was there for a conference. Upon returning to northwest Arkansas, I asked our local franchise operator about it and he bubbled with excitement as he touted the coming debut of the new menu item. It’s truly delicious, but it was Chick-fil-A’s efforts that caught my attention.

First, the Mass Marketing

Again… cows, selling chicken. It works.

The Relationship Marketing

Instead of calling this a “social media campaign” (because you will generally think in terms of tools like Twitter and Facebook), I’d term it a relationship campaign. Chick-fil-A was able to spread buzz about the upcoming product launch with some creative methods. Dan Cathy, CEO, wrote about it on his blog…

We actually invited people to our restaurants.

We helped them make reservations for their free Spicy Chicken Sandwich. We gave them white glove service in a completely unexpected way. We reminded them that whether we’re rolling out new recipes or opening new stores, the lifeblood of Chick-fil-A are the fans. And the fans deserve special treatment.

Reservations took more work than coupons. They cost more time and were more complicated than doing a mass marketing coupon campaign. But for us, the chance to have friends over for a celebration, the opportunity to have people feel waited on and important, was simply too important to pass up.

source: DanCathy.com

So from that short blip, notice the huge lessons in relationship marketing…

First, make a great product. (Otherwise, don’t bother.)

Get your people excited about it.

Work hard to get attention – your product is worth it, right?

Treat “customers” like family. Reward fans.

Serve. Meet needs. Don’t just hope for sales.

Chick-fil-A seems to nail every kind of media and every kind of marketing right on target every time. And it makes sense – they nailed the chicken sandwich pretty well!

eGrace Creative is a freelance business that exists on the vast ocean of the internet, but as the Chief Creative Officer (a title I bestow upon myself as the sole proprietor), I do understand that often a potential client wishes to work with an agency within their own vicinity for the benefit of face-to-face meetings.

Up until now, eGrace Creative has existed in Bentonville, northwest Arkansas, the home of Walmart. But in early July 2010, I’ll be relocating to Orange County, California to assume a staff position at Saddleback Church using social media tools to connect with Pastors and church leaders. I’ve written more about this over at my personal blog.

Therefore, while the work I do through eGrace Creative won’t change much, my base of operations will. So if you’re in southern California, or you know someone who is, and are in the market for creative design, branding, and marketing services, I’d love to help.

As far as what I do, I will be doing more in the way of church, ministry, and nonprofit branding, design, and social media marketing consultation. Please pray for us as we prepare for this rather significant transition!

I think one of my favorite things to do is find marketing failures and point them out. I just got a call from Office Depot. They’ve paid someone to call me and try to get me to order paper.

“But we like to visit the store…” is my reply.

And the telemarketer’s answer back? “Even if it costs you more money?”

Yep. I’m a doofus. Not only do you make me feel dumb for visiting your store, you insinuate that going to your store is expensive. Why not avoid human interaction and let us ship it out to you? Then you won’t feel so stupid for shopping with us…

Here’s the bigger issue though – don’t just be good with a phone. Your callers should promote your stores, which should promote your callers. Be all around good.

I received an email newsletter that included a link to a great article about how Perry Noble prepares sermons. Excellent content – the kind most Pastors love to consume.

I stopped reading after only one third of the article, not because it wasn’t good, but because of article pagination. Just look…

I immediately thought, “I should have known.” This particular website is locked into some outdated marketing principles that say “offer good content, but smatter it with monetization.” Let me tell you why paginating your articles is, in my opinion, bad marketing mojo…

It stinks from a usability standpoint. If I click the page numbers out of order, my browser’s back and forward buttons now create an illogical puzzle, and why should I have to click a link to read more twice during a single article?

It messes with the sharable nature of the content. If I’m on page three and tweet the current url, it’s a different url than the article’s actual primary url.

It costs more server load. Yes, the pages can be cached, but some elements will still load on every click. Thankfully, I have broadband.

The two-fold purpose is obvious: 1.) get three pageviews instead of one, thereby decreasing bounce rates and increasing the marketability of advertising spots, and 2.) make me look at more ads (which are wallpapered all over this site).

So the excuse I hear so often is that you get more content above the fold with pagination. I would argue that I still have to scroll some and scrolling really isn’t as much of a problem as loading another page. The other excuse is that it breaks content into more readable chunks. Baloney.

The bottom line is that modern content consumers are more savvy than ever before in their understanding of how websites work. It doesn’t take much more than common sense for me to realize I’m just a marketing target and you’re dying to get me to see more ads, click more ads, and sell more ads for your business.

I’m not against monetizing content. I monetize content myself and also work hard to accomplish that goal for clients. But please, please realize that your bad marketing mojo with it’s immediate “click” payoff really just turns me into an untrusting skeptic. It really seems to me that developing untrusting skeptics is the opposite of good marketing. I’m a brand loyalist but I’m only loyal to brands I trust.

Watch your marketing mojo!

When I set up hosting for a design client, the hosting package comes with plenty of email power, but nothing can really top Gmail for email purposes. Some argue that putting all of your eggs into the Google basket is a bad idea. I feel otherwise. Google Apps has offered up one of the nicest set of small business tools available anywhere. Our church even uses Google Apps to manage multiple calendars, store documents for the staff, and route emails.

The best part of it all is that Google Apps is domain-brandable. So my church email address is brandon@bethelbentonville.com but it’s actually powered by Gmail and therefore gets me tons of storage, highly searchable and taggable email, and the awesome Gmail user interface. We can keep a facilities and events calendar for the organization and we can each have our own calendars to share with one another. It’s all collaborative magic!

Mashable.com just published a post detailing how small businesses can use Google Apps. I highly recommend that if you aren’t totally satisfied with your non-google-apps-email-and-calendar solution, check it out.

I recently wrote an article for bloggers about whether or not we can afford to ignore Google Buzz. Since writing that article shortly after Buzz’s public release, I’ve really come to value certain aspects of it as a sharing platform.

When you “tweet” a link, you’re just throwing a link out there, but Buzz (along with Facebook as a sharing platform and a few others) allows you to do a little something extra – share it with a note. For example, in my screenshot above, Michael Hyatt wanted to share a Kindle-related article.

Michael had a couple of options for how to share it on Buzz, but one way is to use the Note in Reader browser bookmarklet. Not only is this easy, but there are also two things I really like about this kind of sharing. One is the personal branding – it’s shared by Michael with his photo there. Second is the note Michael made about it. Sharing a link is easy, but giving your opinion on it, or at least telling me why I should read, is far more powerful.

This is what content-sharing should really look like.

Don’t Waste Your Time on Blogging – A piece that is more positive than it sounds, urging bloggers to realize the value of every post and invest their time wisely. If you’re going to blog, make it worth the readers’ time.

Blogging Is All About the Money, Right? – This is a common perception – bloggers are simply out to get rich. I argue that what is more important than the money you make immediately is the influence you gain over time.

<a href="http://www.fuelyourblogging.com/do-you-dare-ignore-google-buzz/"Do You Dare Ignore Google Buzz? – If you’re not using Buzz yet, I recommend it. And I’d love it if you’d follow me on Buzz too.

And there are many more good articles there by other authors too. Check out Fuel Your Blogging for some great advice.

Recently, over at WeBlogBetter.com I’ve been talking about how people today (internet users) are living in a cloud. It used to be a web where we would go to end destinations called websites. But now, people consume the content of the internet on their own terms – rss feeds, email, social networks, cellular apps, etc.

I’ve posted several videos about this concept…

I love entrepreneurs! Generally, I’ve noticed a drive and a determination that takes creative-minded, bootstrapping, do-it-yourselfers a long way. Those who show true ingenuity, persistence, and resilience inspire us all to have a brighter attitude.

I also love entrepreneurs because they ask me to help them with things like logo and graphic design, social media strategy, and web-based user experience. Oh, and I charge for those things, so it’s doubly-nice.

One thing I’ve noticed, however, about super-entrepreneurs is that their minds tend to race about 10,000 rpm’s with cool, new ideas. I really wonder how many ideas are eventually left laying in the dust, not because they weren’t good ideas, but because not quite enough thought and planning went into them.

Having received tons of emails with ideas from entrepreneurs hoping to take an idea big-time, I thought I’d throw together this list of the six things I either say, or want to say in response. They are mostly questions, not recommendations, but the questions themselves are often overlooked.

Is it possible?

I know this one sounds obvious. If it weren’t would I be asking about the idea to begin with? And aren’t all things possible to those who believe? Certainly, but quite a few great ideas are laying in graves because the technology was either not ready, or too expensive.

Who else is doing it?

Use search engines and social networks to scout out the potential competition. Sometimes you wind up jumping into an arena filled with insurmountable competition. You’re probably not going to start the business that will topple an Amazon or Apple.

Can it be done <del>well</del> remarkably?

Doing something well doesn’t make it successful. Doing it well enough to get noticed does. Can you execute the idea in such a way that people will buy into it?

Do I have accesses to the resources to get it done?

This thought may sound strange, but some ideas are good (or noble) enough that you should consider handing it off to someone who can get it done. And every good entrepreneur knows that “resources” aren’t limited to the money in your pocket. It includes the money in other people’s pockets as well!

Is the idea something I’m passionate enough about to stick with over the long haul?

Pretty self-explanatory. Most of us have been there, burying an idea for which we had great enthusiasm, but didn’t see the gap between enthusiasm and real passion.

Can it be monetized?

This is the slimy question nobody thinks anyone should ask, but it must be faced. Why? Because if it can’t be monetized, it can’t be sustained or expanded. Sometimes that’s okay. Sometimes a good idea needs to piggy-back some other more profitable concept. Sometimes, the idea needs to go back into the incubator though.

These questions are seeds. You may have more to face. But at least face these and use them as a filter for every new idea. Let your genius lie asoak in the probing process. If an idea survives… wow!

I get to hear both sides. Creative individuals sometimes think clients are clueless and only concerned about the bottom line. Clients often wonder if designers have a clue about the bottom line since they’re so “artsy-fartsy.” Maybe it’s time we started appreciating each other.

I appreciate both art and profit in the marriage between entrepreneurship and design. Sometimes we designers are so idealistic that we don’t like to think in terms of time and cost. Our philosophy becomes, “if it’s beautiful, who cares about the dollar amount?” Meanwhile the business client is waiting for the return so he can feed his family and build his company to new heights.

Here are some things we should probably learn to appreciate about each other…

Five Things Clients Should Appreciate About Creatives

Creativity. Plain and simple. Most designers have the ability to think abstractly, which can push the edges a bit. While old business models grow stale, a creative individual can force a business person to explore new realms of thought.

Form and function. Personally, I see both design and code as art, so good designers have the ability to make something work, and make it pretty.

Advocacy for the consumer. An entrepreneurial friend of mine told me flatly, “Advocate for our clients. Don’t let us do something that we think is smart but will cost us sales.” We who study user experience as a discipline should do this, and it should be appreciated.

Expertise. Client, don’t under-appreciate the technical ability of designers. Yes, you can probably get it done cheaper at one of the many design warehouses online, but you’re paying someone to know something that very few people really know – how to make a logo pop, how to make a site standards-compliant, etc.

Exposure to the online world at large. Don’t under-value this. Most designers understand how to network quite well and are exposed to what’s happening on the cutting edge. While you’re reading Forbes, they’re reading Wired and becoming cultural geniuses… hopefully. Trust me, this can help you!

Five Things Creatives Should Appreciate About Clients

Money. Plain and simple. Don’t whine and complain too much about the guy who is providing food for your family. And realize that you should earn what you’re paid by good old-fashioned hard work.

Drive and vision. Learn all that you can from entrepreneurial risk-takers, especially if you’re a freelance designer. Believe me, you can use a little help most of the time.

Connections. This one is simple – choose not to cooperate with a client and it will most definitely cost you a potential future new relationship. Sometimes this is unavoidable, but this should be rare. If business relationships are crumbling around you ask yourself what the common denominator is. (hint: it’s you)

Focus. Clients have a good way of saying, “Yes that’s cool, but will it help us sell?” This is a better question than we sometimes think.

Help with discipline. Clients – here’s a secret – creatives don’t like deadlines at all, but when the deadline comes, they’re appreciative for the benefit of the pressure. Admit it, creatives, you cram at the last minute, but sometimes you need the push.

You’ve heard people say, “I just love it when a plan comes together.” Well, I just love it when a project comes together because a client and a creative got together and arrived at a grand conclusion and were mutually beneficial to each other in the process. How else are we going to grow?

A long time ago I purchased the .info version of my name to use as a simple business card site. I’ve finally gotten around to launching it and thought I’d take the super-simple html template and make it available to others for free. It’s a single page of code and just a few lines of style. Images are included as well as layered psd and png files (I’m a Fireworks guy). Just edit the text or take it and make something totally new out of it. Just have fun. No credit is necessary, but feel free to link back here if you’re in the mood. I would love to see it in action, so feel free to leave your link in the comments if you use it.

Probably a lot more! You probably should know that this article is inspired by three different interactions. One, reading Niki Brown’s article, Why Logos Should Cost More Than $300. Two, reading Jacob Cass’ Why logo design does not cost $5. Third, a common question I hear from Pastors, “how do I convince my church to spend money on a website when they don’t see the need?

So leaders, I’m going to attempt to give you some viable and truthful information about why a church should invest money in a church website…

To Honor God

Your building and grounds, bulletin shells, and website should all be done with exellence, fit for the King! Simple enough.

To Communicate the Gospel

A web site is another platform from which to spread the message of eternal life. I don’t think you should see your website as “just one more tool,” but that’s probably best left for a future post.

To Connect with the Public

You might still use a phone book, but most people under 30… no wait, 40 don’t. We use Google… or Bing… or Local, Ask, Dogpile (don’t ask) or something similar. The closest we get to the yellow pages is Google-411 or Anywho.com. So when John, Jane, and their kids Johnny, Jr., Jimmy, and Jasmin move to your town, they’re going to search for “churches in anytown, usa.” You might want to be there to meet them.

At Bethel, about 70% of the people who walk through our doors saw our website before coming!

To Provide Information About Your Church

Service times, maps, events, ministries offered, staff and leadership – all are common ingredients of church websites, and they should be. You’re telling everyone who you are.

Wait… our question wasn’t just “why do we need a website,” but “why do we need a good website, that costs money?” Well, here then…

Your Website Should Reflect Your Church’s Story and Personality

Please, please don’t use the template and space that comes with your home ISP account. Let me make this simple – your pastoral business card, church sign, bulletin, and website should all have a common theme – a brand if you will.

Your Website Should Encompass a Well-planned Usability Strategy

A page with a bunch of links and text worked great way back in the 90′s, but that was a previous century! A professional designer will understand your website from the perspective of a user, a visitor. The flow of information will be user-centric. You’ve got to think through your online communication strategy.

Your Website Should Look Good

Plain and simple – your church website shouldn’t stink. It should really look great, like these.

What Should A Website Cost?

Impossible to answer here. Why? Because there are a variety of needs, a variety of solutions, and a variety of approaches taken by a variety of designers. Personally, I’d be wary of anyone charging less than $750 – 1,000 for a complete site solution. I’d also probably avoid anyone charing more than a few thousand dollars, unless they’re really creating some awesome applications for you from scratch. So, anywhere from $750 – $5,000 depending on a range of factors.

Rather than look for a particular price, keep these points in mind…

Find a designer you can trust based on references, previous work, and the evidence of strong ethics.

Don’t be cheap. You’re paying for creativity and art, not a mass-produced commodity.

Don’t be extravagant. It’s God’s money (all of it) so be a wise steward, but don’t be cheap…

Form a relationship with your designer so that he can perform future work for you with a growing understanding of your vision and values.

Value a designer’s work as a contribution to the honor and glory of God.

They’re Still Not Convinced

I’ve been there. In fact, eGrace Creative exists today because I felt a $2,500 price tag would shock some of my congregational leaders into immediate cardiac arrest. So I started playing around with web creation software. That was 1998 and the rest is history. I’ve been helping churches since then. So my next post along these lines is going to be quite the opposite sentiment… How Can My Church Have a Nice Website for Less than $100 (They’re Too Cheap To Spend More)
