Why should NSAIDs be taken with food?

NSAIDs have shown many side effects which cause damage to stomach and peptic ulcer results via several mechanisms. Research seems nebulous in explaining WHY food helps. Apart from increasing the pH to decrease the chance of damage, I cannot think of any other justification. Sudden electricity and tension headache

ITP, splenectomy then several autoimmune disorders?
