The School of Rural Public Health is seeking qualified applicants for Head of the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health. The desired start date is Fall 2010. The successful candidate will have a 12-month, tenure-track faculty appointment as Associate or Full Professor in the department.

Qualified applicants must have a relevant terminal degree, e.g. MD or PhD. An MPH or equivalent public health degree from an accredited academic institution is not essential, but desirable. West Virginia University Department of Microbiology, Immunology Cell Biology invites applications from outstanding scientists for a post-doctoral position, available November 1, 2009. Appointee for this post doctoral position will be expected to:

• Independently perform experiments to assess exposure of mice or tissue culture lines to different xenobiotics. These experiments will involve (1) exposing the mice to the xenobiotics, isolating their lymphocytes and performing a variety of bioassays on the cells and (2) exposing cell lines to herbicides in vitro and then performing cellular bioassays and molecular assays to determine the effects that exposure has on the function or genetic make-up of the cells (3) In vivo tumor xenograft assays. Recommend future experiments or modifications to the experiments based on the analysis of the results.
• Perform experiments using specific immunoassays, biochemical and molecular assays. The individual will independently perform routine assays including flow cytometry and analysis of flow cytometric data, western blots, ELISAs, ELISPOT assays, isolation of cellular extracts, isolation of RNA, Northern blots. Recommend future experiments or modifications to the experiments based on the analysis of the results.
• Record and maintain a laboratory notebook with all experimental details and results that will be used to prepare method and results sections for manuscripts. Present results at weekly laboratory meetings in a professional manner Sigma Plot graphs and PowerPoint presentations.
• Perform statistical analysis on data to determine the significance of the results. Recommend future experiments or modification to the experiments based on the analysis of the results.
• Prepare common lab stock solutions and maintain cell lines for use in experiments.
• Contribute significant information to the preparation of research grants-budget, methods, and result sections.
• Perform literature searches (PubMed) for the PI and laboratory personnel for current and ongoing research and techniques applicable to the research in the laboratory
• Train and assist new technicians, graduate students, work study students and undergraduate students as required in the laboratory.
• Maintain a safe and functional laboratory environment. Have knowledge of an periodically review the requirements for animal handling (Animal Care and Use Committee), biohazards (Institutional Biohazard Committee), radioactive reagents (Radiation Safety Committee) and all federal guidelines.
• Prepare submit grant applications to support their salary research costs at the P.I.'s option.

The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), National Institutes of Health (NIH), Public Health Service (PHS) is seeking a Staff Clinician to expand the activities of a clinical research program in the role of environmental and genetic factors in the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases at the Clinical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. Staff Clinicians are physicians who spend a majority of their time providing critical clinical services to the NIH. The Staff Clinician is also expected to provide clinical leadership and the highest level of clinical care. Scientist with a strong background in computer science, bioinformatics and advanced statistical methodologies to participate in team research on the epigenetic regulation of cellular processes. The position is ideal for a person with proven experience in theoretical sciences interested in applying his or her knowledge to cutting edge biological problems that include control of stem cell lineage, cell differentiation, neuronal development and aging in health and disease.

Research by the candidate will be in support of research directed by Dr. Lutz Birnbaumer, a Principal Investigator at the NIEHS in the central-north area of North Carolina. Dr. Birnbaumer's group at the NIEHS has developed methodology to assess genome-wide changes in the methylation status of genomic DNA at single-base-pair resolution. He and his team are using this technology to study the roles of DNA methylation in health and disease. Each experiment generates 40 to 400 million data points that require analysis by investigators familiar with the computer science and statistical tools required to extract understandable associations and differences, including postulation of regulatory networks and mechanisms of cell lineage definition.

Minimum qualifications include a doctoral degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) with a strong background in computer science, bioinformatics, and advanced statistical methodology. Experience or familiarity with modern concepts of epigenetics and regulation of cellular processes will make a candidate particularly suitable. Salary is commensurate with background.
