The "call of duty" is a familiar emotion for many Einstein students, who are committed to patients and their communities. But for young military physicians, it takes on a different meaning.

Whole Genome Sequencing: Educating Medical Students of Today about a Technology of Tomorrow

The 1997 movie "Gattaca" imagines a future where newborn genetic screening is used to determine one’s disease risk and life expectancy and, chillingly, one’s place in society. Sixteen years ago, this scenario seemed a distant possibility. But the ability to decipher a person’s genetic makeup — using a technology called whole genome sequencing (WGS) — is no longer the stuff of science fiction. And now that the cost of WGS ($3 billion per genome in 2003 and about $5,000 today) is approaching that of routine diagnostic scans, the medical, ethical, social, and legal issues raised by WGS have taken on a new urgency.

Lilly Port: The Globetrotting Centenarian

The hike up to the ruins at Masada, in Israel, is quite steep and challenging enough that an elevator is available for those who prefer a lift. Even so, at the age of 96, Lilly Port walked the at times harrowing, serpentine trail to the top, with her caretaker Carolina Gonzalez by her side. "I climbed up," she said with pride. "Taking the elevator would be cheating."

On April 26, 2013, six months after announcing a prestigious $3 million grant from the nationally renowned Glenn Foundation for Medical Research, the College of Medicine officially celebrated the inauguration of its new translational research center focused on the biology of aging. Named the Paul F. Glenn Center for the Biology of Human Aging Research, the facility is dedicated to studying the complex aging process, creating ways to slow and potentially reverse cellular degeneration and reducing age-related diseases.

From “Mozartiana” to Medicine: Alex Ritter's Remarkable Journey

In her June 11, 1996 review of George Balanchine’s “Mozartiana,” New York Times dance critic Anna Kisselgoff commended soloist Alexander Ritter, noting, “One hopes not to wait long for Mr. Ritter to dance the leading role in this ballet. In the meantime, he poured into the quirky ‘Gigue’ solo of “Mozartiana” all the flourish of a Moliere and the classical form of a Racine.”

On April 15, 2013, during an “historic” evening at the Plaza Hotel in Manhattan, Dr. Allen M. Spiegel, the Marilyn and Stanley M. Katz Dean at Einstein, publicly announced the College of Medicine’s largest fundraising effort—a capital campaign to raise at least $500 million, known as “The Campaign to Transform Einstein.” (See news release).

When South Bronx native Eddy Cruz walked into the offices of the Einstein Enrichment Program (EEP), Deborah Negron-Cordero sensed right away that the then-Cardinal Hayes sophomore with a love of science was destined for great things.

A Tradition of Volunteering Begins with a Quake

The memory of the young girl clinging to him for comfort is one that stays with Dr. Paul Levin even now, nearly three years after the encounter. In the wake of the catastrophic earthquake that hit Haiti in 2010, Dr. Levin felt a tremor of his own – the desire to donate his medical skills to the devastated region.

Thirteen medical students sat around an oval table headed by Dr. Ellen Tattelman, course instructor for the The Healer's Art elective. To begin, she introduced some breathing exercises, encouraging the students to relax and feel a sense of peace. Since this particular evening's session focused on "Sharing Grief and Honoring Loss," Dr. Tattelman instructed the students to reflect upon a time of personal disappointment or loss.
